2 Bibi has been on trial over one fabricated charge after another for years, Jairong — I make a point of not paying attention to the details, to be honest. The game played here against Donald Trump was adopted from Israel’s deep state shenanigans — you can read the latest details on any of the English language news sites; the leftwing Ha’aretz will be the most vicious about it. Honestly, I have no idea what they’re charging him for this time, but President Trump has been after Israel’s President Herzog to put a stop to it via a preemptive pardon. President Herzog dislikes both President Trump and the man whose government he is the figurehead for, so has been coming up with excuses not to give in.

But one can see his frustration. Not because any of the charges are deserved any more than previous PMs, but because in addition to having served as a minister in one of Bibi’s cabinets and lost to him when running as head of Labour would have made him PM in his own right, Mr. Herzog is Labour Party royalty: his father also served a turn as Israel’s president, and various relatives were various eminent Israeli personages. But labour socialism, and therefore its political parties, has been declining since the 1980s, so his moment will likely never come.
