One small correction: Shabbas goy is not in-group slang, but proper Yiddish. It means a gentile who performs basic work on the Sabbath forbidden to pious Jews, such as turning on and off lights, and lighting fires. It’s a term that dates back to the early centuries A.D. I understand that nowadays people generally use electronic timers rather than hiring someone or asking a friend to perform the small service — I’ve never known anyone who needs such a thing.
