2 See the book 'On the Roads of War: A Soviet Cavalryman on the Eastern Front' by Ivan Yakushin who details his experiences during WWII in the cavalry. Been a while since I read, but under the right conditions horse mounted cavalry remained usable and useful during WWII.

The Germans used horses to pull carts and lighter artillery pieces during WWII.

During WWII mules were widely used in northern Italy and in Burma going places that even the jeep couldn't go.
