I seem to wondering that exact question when badanov was reporting regularly about the drugs war in Mexico. If I recall correctly, the answer was that patrilineal name from each line is taken, though whether it is then presented mother’s line first or father’s line is quite beyond me. At any rate, it’s my understanding that the entire line of descent on both sides can be traced by following the names back into history, a practice begun to show limpieza de sangre, a pure or Old Christian bloodline untainted by contamination with Jewish or Moorish intermarriage. It does not account for cuckoos in the nest, of course.

14 Except, Lumpy Glease9042, for those Jews who trace their bloodlines back to the Spanish Expulsion of 1492 — Spain a few years ago offered citizenship to any modern Jew who could document direct descent — and the several families who document descent from the House of David via the Exilarch in Babylonia following the destruction of the first Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BC, and of course the priestly families of the Cohens and Levis that go back to the Exodus from Egypt. Beyond them, though, most are like me, able to document ancestors to a generation before Napoleon required the granting and recording of formal family names, but no further.
