Takaichi, leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), replaces Shigeru Ishiba, who resigned earlier in the day along with his cabinet after just one year in office, ending a three-month political vacuum that followed the party’s crushing defeat in the July election. She secured 237 votes — four more than the 233 required for a majority — comfortably defeating Constitutional Democratic Party leader Yoshiko Noda, who received 149 votes in the House of Representatives. As the results were announced, Takaichi stood and bowed deeply before lawmakers.
