10 To me, tribe refers to Native Americans, stone age aborigines, and some Arabs, eg. Charles Glass’s Tribes With Flags. It’s not clear to me why anyone would so describe the Jews — we seem no more tribal than Italians or Poles.

Jairong, on the other hand, seems to go both ways, from anti to philo and back again, and I’ve no idea what triggers him to change state, though I suspect at least some is hitherto unthinking acceptance of the shibboleths of his favoured websites. Which is fair — I bumped up against a number of those here, too, and have learnt a great deal more than I expected to as a result.

13 Actually, there were the 12 Israeli tribes in the Bible. I can't name them all off the top of my head but I think they were supposed to be the descendants of the 12 sons of Jacob. There's your Sunday School lesson for today. Of course, like NoMoreBS says, none of that means that it's antisemitic to talk about tribes.

As I understand it, the so-called Ten Lost Tribes were the Israelite tribes of the post-Solomonic northern kingdom of Israel, conquered and taken into exile by the Assyrians in 720 BC, but refugees made their way south to the kingdom of Judah, which remained independent until conquered by Babylon in 586 BC. And there were also expat communities dotted around the Middle East and as far as India, so while the tribes were lost as historic entities, they contributed descendants to the Jewish people as a whole to this day.
