3 For thousands of years, war was (and remains) basically butchery. As long as one group practices it, everyone else needs to be prepared to respond in the same manner. The unarmed civilians near the border got to experience what happens when you don't on Oct 7.

5 Haredi draft-avoidance — because they are studying on behalf of entire Jewish people, even the ones that aren’t excessively bright — has been a sore subject for at least a decade that I am aware of, and probably longer. Once they became politically active as a group trading Knesset votes for protections and funding, they became kingmakers. Mostly Bibi Netanyahu, who did what he had to in the face of theatrical horror from the “respectable” center and the moderate left, with whom he probably would have preferentially allied.

7 Re #5: tw, when we visited Israel in 2011, the Israeli tour guide complained that the Haredim controlled just enough votes in the Knesset that made them kingmakers. One of the conditions for their support at the time was that they were exempt from the draft.

As a side note: although the tour guide was Jewish, the bus driver was Muslim. They were good friends - the guide would occasionally have dinner with the driver.

9 Thank you for explaining, Rambler. While my parents had lots of Israeli friends, and I had a number of Israeli teachers at my Hebrew school, my parents had happily given up travel after their honeymoon. And later Mr. Wife was working in countries where an Israeli stamp on his passport would have caused problems, so it was added to our Someday list. What I know about Israel comes from reading and listening, not personal experience.
