Elmar Theveßen, the chief correspondent in the US for German state broadcaster ZDF publicly claimed that Kirk had been in favor of stoning homosexuals. (link in German)

He made this statement in a high profile talk show, not on social media though.

I wonder if he will be allowed to stay.

If the State Department is serious he won't.

You can't have it both ways. Journalists will often write things that are not true (actually Theveßen has corrected his statement).

A few days ago I believed that Kirk had really said that because many sites were stating this as a fact (Theveßen did sloppy research). Then I checked for myself and found out that Kirk quoted this an example, that the Bible says "Love thy neighbor) but also advocated the stoning of homosexuals. Yes context matters.

4 @3 I commented on the State Department's announced policy, ultimately it is their decision.

ZDF is a billion euro enterprise.

I expect journalists do to their research on the topic they're reporting on, something which Theveßen and his office obviously didn't do. A Stephen King tweet isn't a reliable source.

Theveßen spouted his atrocious lie on a talk show that is influential and still has a significant audience.

A correction issued on social media will likely only be seen by a tiny fraction of that audience.

ZDF should broadcast a statement from Theveßen where he retracts and apologizes for his disinformation on "Markus Lanz" (the talk show) and in its main news features to reach the audience that was exposed.
