6 about 5k data centers in the USA currently

typical footprint is about 100k to 300k sq feet

typical operation employs from 50-300 people permanently

the taxation issue is too complicated for me to understand because there are tax breaks in early years to be made up over time and the tax rates vary wildly depending on jurisdiction, etc.

currently, data centers, in total draw less than 1% of the USA's total power needs, but of course, that is now. Also, most of the power comes from electricity generated (mostly by natural gas fueled plants) by the data center itself (as it takes quite a while to get a permit for electricity hookup for a big user)

8 Lord Garth's comment (#6) makes me think. So many data centers are running off their standby generators, until they get commercial power? But commercial power might be a long ways off, with permitting issues, fuel questions, and infrastructure nobody wants in their neighborhood.

So stand-alone power might work for a while, but for an indeterminate time? With those 'temporary' generators spewing those nasty pollutants? Wait'll the neighbors find out!

Seems like another reason for Musk's solar-powered orbital data centers. Only worry about all those microwaves frying your brain!
