2 History teaches us that Afri campaigns are generally losers. One would think that the Ukrainian meat grinder would act as a deterrent to Putin and his expansionist communist machine. But no, they appear to embrace defeat nearly as enthusiastically as victory.

History suggests great powers rarely lose by force in Africa; they lose by patience. Niger is the latest example. After the 2023 coup, Washington folded its Sahel footprint and left by September 15, 2024—closing Air Base 101 in Niamey and abandoning the $110 million drone hub in Agadez. Another base abandoned, just like Afghanistan. No shots fired, no defeat declared, just another quiet retreat. One would think decades of expensive lessons might change the script. But no—strategic exits are still sold as prudence, even when they look an awful lot like surrender.

4 Most countries think that they will be different and succeed and the US believes this strongly.

Far more often than not, they find out that they are no better than their predecessors in achieving their goal.
