The Caribbean Sea and the Indian Ocean are separated by approximately 10,000 miles (16,000 kilometers), spanning across the Americas, the Atlantic Ocean, Africa, and the southern Indian Ocean.

This upcoming Naval exercise should be a hoot, if it took 10,000 miles to board an oil tanker.

Little more complex than that. The ocean is a huge place and if the ship is spoofing or not broadcasting its transponder signal, it takes a while to find. Also verifying that it is the one that is sanctioned takes time.

BUT.... once all those are done getting it is easy. You know roughly where it is going so you just need to get forces in place to intercept it. Like a defender intercepting a pass. Nice thing about ocean transport, you have time to get things right and in place.
