1 Russia has a phobia about being invaded and has no reason to trust the West (or China).

Multiple countries have invaded Russia going back over a century.

Multiple Western countries, including the US and Great Britain, interfered in the Russian Civil War and supported the White Russians.

In WWII the US and Great Britain let the Russians bear the brunt of the war in Europe while they built up their strength for the invasion of Europe. Depending on the source, The Soviet Union lost between 10-20 percent of their ENTIRE population.

Not trying to defend Putin and Russia in all of her forms isn't a saint, but understanding even a small amount of Russia's history helps see why they behave the way they do.

People talk about Russia as a nation with an imperialist past as if that justifies EU and NATO imperialism on Russia's borders. It doesn't. Britain, France, Holland, Spain and Portugal were all imperial powers until WWII knocked them off their pedastals. But, even today, many of them have overseas possessions. As for the United States, ask an Apache.

I won't defend Putin either. No doubt he is a ruthless, murderous dictator. But that doesn't mean we should pick a fight with him.
