[CPR] A former state forensic scientist on Tuesday was sentenced to 10 years in state prison after altering more than 1,000 samples in labs that prosecutors say could have disproportionately affected sexual assault victims over many years. Yvonne Missy Woods, 66, “brazenly” altered DNA samples in her lab that may have affected dozens of sex assault cases for women and children between 2008 and 2023 by manually altering - and always reducing - the amount of DNA on sex assault investigation swabs, prosecutors said.
State officials say more than 400 cases of the 1,100 affected by Woods’ altering of data were sex assaults.
Prosecutors say they are unaware of any unjust convictions from those cases and say the vast majority of those seemingly protected attackers — or did not change the disposition in the case. Woods’ defense attorneys agreed with this assessment in court.
Because of this, her behaviors over more than a decade are completely confusing, Jefferson County assistant district attorney Darren Kafka told Judge Poland.
Tom Ward, one of Woods’ defense attorneys, told the judge that the vast majority of her data altering was done to move the cases along faster at the behest of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

[FOX] Amazon has paused operations with cargo carrier 21 Air following the fatal crash of an Amazon-branded freighter at Miami International Airport earlier this month.
"After the tragic incident last weekend, we've spent time supporting the investigation and reviewing some of the surrounding circumstances, and we’ve decided to pause our operations with 21 Air, the operator of Flight 7598," Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel said in a statement to Reuters. "We'll continue working to support the investigation and everyone affected."
The Sept. 6 flight, operated by 21 Air for Amazon Air, overran a runway while landing in Miami after arriving from San Juan, Puerto Rico, striking multiple vehicles on the ground. The crash killed five people and injured five others.

[DM] Two young brothers are being hailed as heroes after charging into a burning nursing home to rescue elderly residents.
Alex Bazinyan, 20, and his brother Narek, 15, sprang into action after a fire broke out at an assisted living facility near their home in Glendale, California, at 4.45pm Friday.
Flames and thick gray smoke billowed from the facility on the 1800 block of Mountain Street, prompting Alex to rush outside and see what was unfolding.
'I ran outside and I was looking at the front door when I saw the nurse outside and she was screaming for help,' Alex told KTLA.
Narek followed, and the brothers soon realized multiple people were trapped inside. The 15-year-old said he first grabbed a hose to fight the flames, but the fire grew and the cries for help intensified.
Before firefighters arrived, the brothers made a risky choice: they went inside themselves.
'I go inside this big room and I see all these old people on the floor with catheters,' Alex told the outlet.
'Some people were injured, had blood on their legs. We just took everybody out one by one,' he added.

There is nothing at the DM link implying that the staff failed to attempt to get the residents out.
Having visited family in a SNF, there is not enough staff to get the residents all out in a single attempt. SNF staff are usually saints, underpaid, overworked and caring for people who aren't always good patients.

The reported strikes come amid escalating fighting between forces aligned with Somalia’s federal government and fighters loyal to former South West State president Abdiaziz Hassan Mohammed Laftagareen.
A critic of the federal government accused President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire... of carrying out indiscriminate attacks against civilians in Baidoa and surrounding areas.
