[Just the News] Slain Border Patrol agent Brian Terry kept a diary showing he was tracking AK-47s at the border weeks before his 2010 murder exposed the Obama administration’s disastrous Fast and Furious gun-running scheme, according to excerpts from the journal obtained by Just the News.
Terry's journal shows he stopped a shipment of AK-47s from entering the country just a month before he was murdered, according to his brother, Kent Terry. But his supervisors told him to allow the weapons to cross the border, the brother said.
"AK-47 in crate," Brian Terry wrote on one page about a silver SUV he was tracking, adding that he had informed the FBI of his finding. The page is dated Nov. 2, Kent Terry believes it was written in 2010, just one month before the murder.
On another page, dated Nov. 16, Brian Terrywrote that he was performing surveillance at night and wanted to "confirm or deny wpns smuggling."
The final page shared with Just the News is not dated, but appears to show Brian Terry was looking for weapons that had traveled from Honduras through Guatemala and into Mexico, writing an incomplete sentence: "Determine how wpns are..." He also wrote that he needed to seek an interdict "to reduce arms/criminal org" for the Sinaloa cartel.
Operation Fast and Furious began in September 2009 by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) under the direction of the Obama administration. The idea was to allow illegal weapons to flow into the hands of those suspected of selling to Mexican cartels to track where the guns would end up. It wasn't until Terry's murder, where weapons from the same operation were used, that the scandal was exposed.
President Barack Obama and his Attorney General Eric Holder both denied knowing about Fast and Furious, even though memos sent to him in July 2010 showed otherwise. Holder denied seeing the memos and refused to turn over additional documents requested by House investigators. He was held in contempt of Congress but never faced consequences. No one in the Obama administration faced consequences for the botched operation, though the acting director of ATF and an assistant U.S. attorney were reassigned.
Kent Terry told Just the News that he didn’t know if his slain brother was on to something when he wrote those notes in his journal, or was just making daily notes.
"We don’t know exactly why Brian wrote those things. We don’t know if he was onto something or knew about something," Kent Terry said. "That’s the question we’re trying to figure out — or if he knew about it and he didn’t know the depth of it."
Following his death, Brian Terry's father tried to enter his son’s house, according to his brother, but Border Patrol wouldn’t let him in. Looking through the windows, the father could see that the house seemed to be in order.
Once they were allowed in, the Terry family cleaned out his house and removed his possessions, with Kent getting Brian’s clothes, since they were the same size. About a year after Brian Terry's death, Kent Terry said he finally decided to try on a pair of brand new tactical boots he had found in Brian’s home. When trying on the boots, Kent found the journal taped inside the toe of one of the boots.
"We just thought it was kind of odd that we found it in a pair of tactical boots, a brand new box of tactical boots," Kent said. He picked a good hiding place for his journal. He must have been afraid of who might find it.
He said that his father told Dennis Burke, the U.S. Attorney for Arizona at the time, and not long after, Brian Terry's house was "ransacked," Kent Terry said.
"Like somebody was looking for something," Kent Terry said.
Brian Terry's personal laptop had been wiped clean, the brother added.
"Not even the Hewlett Packard icon would show up," he said. "And you can see where someone’s tampered with it in the back because some of the screws are missing."
Burke did not respond to a Just the News inquiry.
Before the Terry family found the journal, they said they had a strange encounter with Border Patrol union representatives in a hotel room after a memorial for Brian Terry, according to his sister and brother.
His sister, Michelle, explained that she, her brother, their father, and other family members were asked to meet with the representatives in a hotel room and were told that Brian Terry had been concerned for his safety in the months prior to his death, sending them three emails about his concerns.
Kent Terry told Just the News that the reps also told the family that Brian didn’t die the way they were being told but they wouldn’t elaborate.
"He goes, ’but what they’re telling you what happened to your son really didn’t happen to your son the way they’re telling you,’" Kent said, adding that the reps told them: "We’re here to throw you a bone, but that’s all we can tell you."
The representatives later denied ever having this meeting, Kent and Michelle said, but they and their family members — at least 10 people — were all in the room and heard what was said.
"Ten people can’t be lying," Michelle said.
Brian Terry's siblings say they just want answers, and know there is more to the story of their brother's murder than what has been reported.
"Brian had 15 more minutes to go on a shift with a two-week furlough and then this happened," Kent Terry said. "I’m not speculating on a conspiracy, but it just seems the timing seems all wrong to us."
"It’s not even answers for us," Michelle added. "We want them for Brian. He deserves the truth and deserves people to be put in prison."
Seven men were sentenced for the murder of Brian Terry, but his family said it isn’t sure they are the real culprits or if even more people were involved.
In 2022, Jesus Rosario Favela-Astorga became the seventh man sentenced in Brian Terry's murder, pleading guilty and getting 50 years in prison.
The Department of Justice said in a press release that Favela-Astorga admitted to being one of several armed bandits who illegally entered the U.S. from Mexico to rob marijuana smugglers.
When Brian Terry’s team attempted to apprehend Favela-Astorga’s crew, one member opened fire, striking Terry. Terry died from his injuries shortly after.
Border Patrol, DOJ, and the Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco (ATF) did not respond to a Just the News inquiry seeking comment.
Nearly 16 years after his murder, Brian’s sister Michelle still remembers his love for his country.
"He was a true, dedicated, American patriot. Brian loved this country, he spent his whole adult life protecting this country. From being a marine to a police officer to a federal agent. He does not deserve what happened to him." This means several things including that the Nigerian army is in fact in contact with JAS, and that both the army and JAS benefitted from this ceasefire to focus on their common enemy ISWAP during these past few months, the latter seeing its activity decline during that same time.
It also raises questions on whether other deals were negotiated between the two previously, as was speculated during the last major war between ISWAP and JAS in late 2025 when the Nigerian Air Force was seemingly providing air support to JAS.

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband on Tuesday announced a ban on all dealings with West Bank settlements, as well as sweeping sanctions and a range of other punitive measures, during a speech in the House of Commons featuring Britannia’s strongest-ever criticism of the settlement enterprise and Israel’s "unlawful occupation."
The "British government agrees that there is ethnic cleansing of Paleostinians in areas of the West Bank — perpetrated by settler terrorists," he told parliament, charging that "the Israeli government has turned a blind eye to this and, worse, members of it have made statements and taken actions to support the forced displacement of Paleostinians."
Shortly after Miliband’s speech, the leaders of the UK, La Belle France and Canada issued a joint statement confirming that they would "take steps to ban the importation of goods from settlements and enforce targeted measures against settlements and those who facilitate them or profit from them." They wrote: "One year ago, we recognized the State of Paleostine. The time has come to take further action to uphold our commitment to protect the two-state solution, our interests and to stand up for our values, before it is too late."
Canada, La Belle France, the UK, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden also released a separate statement promising they would also "introduce national and/or support European restrictions on trade in goods with settlements," or were at least "actively considering" doing so.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar lambasted the British sanctions, calling them "antisemitic" and "morally distorted," and announced several countermeasures, including the closure of the UK’s consulate in Jerusalem serving Paleostinians. Opposition politicians also rejected London’s decision, but cast it as a diplomatic failure by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.
The decision was welcomed by the Paleostinian Authority, which called it "an important practical step."
In his speech, Miliband denounced what he called Israel’s entirely "unlawful occupation" of the West Bank and decried spiraling instances of settler violence against Paleostinians, saying "settler terrorism is rampant," and citing United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... reports of an "average of six violent mostly peaceful settler attacks against Paleostinians per day this year, the highest on record."
Miliband said London would impose an import ban on goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank, sanction companies and individuals that facilitate settlement expansion, and refuse licenses for arms and other exports deemed to materially support Israel’s "occupation," adding that La Belle France and Canada will also impose an import ban, with additional countries set to "support further action."
"The unlawfulness of the occupation should be reflected in the economic relationships we choose to have with the occupied territories," Miliband said, noting that the import bans and a ban on advertising settlements in the UK would form part of a new "comprehensive sanctions regime" expected to take effect within six to nine months, with what he called "appropriate religious exemptions."
The regime would also "take action against specific companies and individuals who provide services such as construction, infrastructure, financing, or real estate for settlement expansion," he said.
Miliband stressed that the UK would continue trading with Israel inside the Green Line and opposed the broader Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement.
The British government was also taking several "immediate" steps, he said, including sanctioning a group of bad boy settlers accused of supporting or inciting violence against Paleostinians; expanding the UK’s existing global human-rights sanctions framework to enable swifter action against settlement expansion, including the E1 project; and refusing all license applications for arms and other exports that "materially contribute to the occupation."
Miliband declared for the first time that the British government now considers Israel’s "occupation as a whole" as unlawful, citing Israel’s "entrenchment of its control," alleged intention to "extend permanent illusory sovereignty" and "expansionist agenda via illegal settlements."
"Our argument is not with the people of Israel, with whom the UK has unshakable bonds," the British foreign secretary said. "Our argument is with the conduct of its government."
In their subsequent joint statement, Canada, Denmark, Finland, La Belle France, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden and the UK called on Israel to "immediately halt the expansion of settlements and civilian administrative powers, ensure accountability for settler violence, and investigate allegations against Israeli forces."
The countries stressed that they recognized Israel’s security interests and were determined to tackle antisemitism.
In his speech to the House of Commons, Miliband also announced sanctions on Hezbollah’s financial arm, al-Qard al-Hassan, and said the UK would reimpose major economic sanctions on Tehran in coordination with the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... and the US.
US ’OBVIOUSLY’ WON’T FOLLOW SUIT
The United States said it would "obviously" not join the effort, but Secretary of State Marco Rubio ...The diminutive 13-year-old Republican U.S. Senator from Florida, Secretary of State in the second Trump administration... did not condemn the UK’s move and did stress the need for stability in the territory roiled by settler violence and rapid Israeli settlement expansion.
"Obviously, we’re not going to do what the UK did. We saw their announcement today, but I don’t have any comment on it right now," Rubio told news hounds in Miami.
But he added that the US does not want to see "anything destabilizing going on right now in the West Bank with so much going on in the region."
’OUTRAGEOUS LIES’: SA’AR FUMES, SHUTTERS UK CONSULATE, BANS CORBYN AND OTHERS
In a lengthy response to the sanctions, Sa’ar called the accusations made by Miliband "outrageous lies" and "morally distorted," and said Jerusalem had "no choice" but to respond with countermeasures, first against the UK and then, "at our discretion, against other countries that act or will act against Israel."

In his statement, Sa’ar said: "A boycott of goods from Judea and Samaria is a despicable practice that harms hard-working, law-abiding citizens," accusing London of singling out the Jewish state for such a practice.
"The claims regarding the severing of potential Paleostinian territorial contiguity are also baseless. The decision of the Government of Israel, taken more than a year ago, stipulated that two roads would be built: the first, Road 80, which will serve as a major transportation route from the Bethlehem area to the Ramallah area; the second, known as the "Fabric of Life" Road, between a-Za’im and al-Ezariya," he asserted.
Sa’ar added that "the claim of harm to ’Paleostinian territorial contiguity’ sounds particularly ridiculous coming from those who insist on defining Judea and Samaria and the Gaza Strip as ’one territorial unit.’"
At the same time, the foreign minister explicitly rejected the formation of a Paleostinian state, saying: "After everything we have seen, after the Israeli concessions in the Oslo Accords and the unilateral withdrawal from Gaza, the Second Intifada and October 7, the Israeli public utterly rejects the establishment of a jihadist terror state in the heart of our land."

In the West Bank, the sanctions were denounced by representatives of the settlements themselves. Yisrael Ganz, chairman of the Yesha Council umbrella organization, called the import ban "antisemitic" and a "moral disgrace."
"Britannia’s decision to boycott products from Judea and Samaria and impose sanctions on Jews simply because they live and work in parts of their homeland is a disgraceful antisemitic step," said Ganz.

TEL AVIV, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Israel has told Britain it must close its East Jerusalem consulate within a month, Israeli officials said on Wednesday, as a retaliatory step against sanctions that Britain, France and Canada have announced against settlements.
The sanctions are among the strongest collective actions taken by major Western allies of Israel over Israeli settlements, and have prompted intense pushback in Israel weeks before it holds a general election.
While the effect of the sanctions may be mostly symbolic, they highlight Israel's growing isolation among countries it once counted as close allies over its war in Gaza and expansion of settlements in the West Bank.
The U.S. ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, a staunch supporter of Israel, has condemned the sanctions and accused the British government of "Jew hate", but neither the White House nor the State Department issued strong criticism of the move.
Two Israeli officials and two other sources familiar with the matter said London had been given 30 days to close the consulate, which represents Britain in Jerusalem, the West Bank and Gaza on Palestinian issues.
Israel has also barred 12 British politicians from visiting the country, told British officials and diplomats in the West Bank and a Gaza coordination centre in Israel to leave, and said Britain can no longer train Palestinian security forces in the West Bank.
It has not yet announced actions against France or Canada, which joined Britain in saying they will halt trade with settlements, or against nine other countries that endorsed the UK sanctions.

WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Defense startup Covenant on Wednesday unveiled a heavy-payload, long-range cruise missile it says can be quickly mass-produced at a relatively low cost, in the latest challenge to major U.S. weapons makers from some of Silicon Valley's biggest investors.
The announcement from Covenant after two years of development coincides with efforts by the U.S. and its allies to restock missile inventories with less expensive and plentiful long-range precision-strike missiles after the war in Iran depleted stocks of the critical armaments.
Its missile, called Anthem, is a ground-launched cruise missile carrying a payload of more than 200 kg (441 pounds). In a fight, it would be used in high volumes to work alongside other long-range missiles like the 1,000-mile (1,609-km) range Tomahawk cruise missile produced by RTX's (RTX.N), opens new tab Raytheon unit and the 600-mile Lockheed Martin (LMT.N), opens new tab Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM-ER).
Comparable weapons from the biggest defense contractors are "being built in small quantities at really high prices. And so we set out to change that," Michael Kaufman, Covenant's co-founder and CEO, told Reuters in an interview.
The company, founded in 2024, has raised just over $250 million from investors including Andreessen Horowitz, Founders Fund, Lux, 8VC, Aleph and Lightspeed, and now employs more than 200 people across the U.S., Germany and Israel.
Anthem is powered by a solid rocket motor for takeoff and a heavy-fuel jet engine for cruise flight. Covenant says it has flown the missile more than 200 times over the past year in tests.
WASHINGTON, Sept 8 (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday issued 36 Iran-related sanctions targeting the country's aviation sector and other companies as part of a broad push to escalate economic pressure on Tehran as the war in the Middle East has moved into a seventh month.
The U.S. Treasury Department said the action was aimed at grounding Iran's Mahan Air, which was already sanctioned by the U.S. and the European Union, and expanding sanctions to all other Iranian airlines. The sanctions also took aim at covert front companies, cargo handlers, foreign intermediaries and deceptive trans-shipment routes that Washington says Iran relies on to obtain U.S.-origin aircraft and sensitive technology.
The Treasury instructed financial institutions to report any procurement networks supporting Iran's aviation industry, while designating firms in Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia and Kazakhstan that it said had helped Iran's airlines operate and Tehran acquire U.S.-origin aircraft and sensitive technology.
Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control also suspended three Iran-related aviation authorizations that allowed overflights and permitted non-U.S. airlines to fly U.S.-origin or U.S.-controlled commercial aircraft into Iran.
Miad Maleki, a former senior Treasury official and fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said the suspension would hit air traffic from Dubai, Doha and Istanbul, shutting Tehran's main gateways to regional trade and finance. OFAC's action also closes previous carve-outs that allowed transport of safety parts, fuel and emergency repairs, he said.
