[GaroweOnline] al-Shabaab ... the personification of Somali state failure... and Yemen ...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of... ’s Iran's Houthi sock puppets ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him... movement have developed a growing partnership involving arms transfers, murderous Moslem training and drone technology, according to an investigative report published by The Wall Street Journal.
The report identified Jibril Yahya Ali, a Somali man known as "Gacaamey," as a longtime liaison between the two groups who purchased military-grade weapons from the Houthis and smuggled them to al-Shabaab. Jibril was killed on Feb. 12 in a missile strike near al-Ghaydah in eastern Yemen while driving along the coast with his new wife.
Two American sources told the WSJ that the United States carried out the strike. However,
man does not live by words alone, despite the fact that sometimes he has to eat them... U.S. Central Command said it was not a military operation, while the CIA declined to confirm whether it was responsible.
Jibril, 38, had studied veterinary medicine in Yemen and operated a charity, a foreign-exchange outlet and an import-export company in Mogadishu.
A busy and ambitious man. It would be admirable were he not so evil.
According to the report, the Houthis provided him with a furnished apartment in Sanaa and a Yemeni passport issued under an assumed name. He also attended official Houthi functions.
Bet he loved going to functions and rubbing elbows with the Houthi bigshots. I’m not sue what benefit there is to having a fake Yemeni passport…
An internal assessment by Yemen’s Counter-Terrorism Service described Jibril as a key figure in strengthening relations between the Houthis and al-Shabaab, particularly in transferring weapons, military equipment and technical expertise.
Al-Shabaab and the Houthis belong to movements rooted in historically opposing religious traditions, but Somali, American and Yemeni officials told the WSJ that hostility toward the United States and Israel has brought them together.

The partnership benefits both sides. al-Shabaab has considerable financial resources but is seeking more sophisticated weapons and training. The Houthis possess missiles, drones and technical expertise but want cash and an expanded operational presence on the southern side of the Gulf of Aden.

In 2024, al-Shabaab sent Sheikh Ahmed Elmi Samatar to Yemen with a weapons wish list that reportedly included shoulder-fired antiaircraft missiles, Katyusha rockets, sniper rifles, attack drones, antitank missiles and night-vision equipment.
Yemeni authorities arrested Samatar in January 2025, but he was later released in a prisoner exchange with the Houthis. He returned to Somalia, leaving Jibril to continue representing al-Shabaab’s interests in Yemen.
After Jibril’s death, al-Shabaab appointed a replacement, suggesting that cooperation between the two groups remains active, according to Matt Bryden, a former United Nations ...boodling on the grand scale... expert who monitored arms flows into Somalia.
The weapons are reportedly concealed by front companies and shipped through Yemeni ports before being transported across the Gulf of Aden aboard speedboats or fishing vessels. They are unloaded along poorly monitored sections of Somalia’s northern coastline and moved overland to al-Shabaab units in the south.
In April 2025, U.S. forces destroyed two unflagged vessels travelling from Yemen toward Somali waters. U.S. Africa Command said the boats were carrying advanced conventional weapons.
It remains unclear which weapons sought by al-Shabaab have reached Somalia. Somali and American officials are particularly concerned that the group could acquire attack drones or missiles capable of striking military bases.
The WSJ also reported that at least 100 al-Shabaab fighters had travelled to Yemen for training in bomb-making, antiaircraft operations and drone assembly.
One group reportedly spent three months this year in Yemen’s Sa’dah region, while Houthi instructors have also travelled to Somalia to train al-Shabaab murderous Moslems.
In June, a four-member Houthi delegation crossed from Yemen by boat and travelled to Jilib, al-Shabaab’s main stronghold in southern Somalia. The delegation reportedly discussed cooperation aimed at countering Israeli activities in Berbera and promised the group more advanced weapons and training.
The Houthis fear that Israel could use Berbera as a base from which to monitor or attack Yemen.

Houthi leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi recently threatened to strike any Israeli presence established in Somaliland ...Republic of Somaliland is an unrecognised sovereign state in the Horn of Africa, recognised internationally as a de jure part of Somalia. It is located in the southern coast of the Gulf of Aden with approximately 5.7 million residents as of 2021. The capital and largest city is Hargeisa. The government regards itself as the successor state to British Somaliland, which united from 1960 to 1991 with the Trust Territory of Somaliland (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the Somali Republic. Under the Siad Barre regime, Somaliadestroyed ninety percent of Hargeisa Per international law, once you're in, you gotta stay in, no matter how bad it smells.... Al-Shabaab collects at least $100 million annually through extortion, compulsory taxation and roadside checkpoints, according to a U.S. intelligence assessment. That revenue allows the group to purchase weapons and training from the Houthis.
The Houthis, meanwhile, are seeking a foothold in Somalia from which they could monitor commercial shipping through the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Gen. Dagvin Anderson, commander of U.S. forces in Africa, told the WSJ that the relationship poses a threat extending beyond Somalia and Yemen because it could affect one of the world’s most important trade and energy corridors.
The Houthis did not respond to the newspaper’s questions about their relationship with al-Shabaab. The precise weapons transferred to the Somali group and the full extent of the operations being planned have not been independently verified.

Radical Moslem inmates are said to be forcing other prisoners — mostly White British men — to convert to Islam in some of the U.K.'s prisons, according to British media reports this week.
The problem of Moslem gangs in the nation's prisons has become progressively worse since Britannia's Sky News first reported in 2013 that "British inmates are being bullied into converting to Islam while in jail" while noting that the "Prison Officers Association says it is symptomatic of the growing power and influence of Moslem gangs in prison."
This week, Nick Timothy, the shadow justice secretary of the opposition Conservative party, has urged the left-of-center Labour government to root out forced conversions.
Timothy posted on X Tuesday, "Islamist gangs control many of our prisons. Conversion to Islam is the only way to stay safe from them. I obtained data showing 1 in 5 Moslem prisoners are white. That’s four times higher than in the general population. This cannot continue."
He told the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph, "We know that experts have warned repeatedly about forced conversions taking place behind bars, driven by Islamic gangs," Timothy said. "We need to be honest that something is not right here — Labour must urgently investigate and stamp out forced conversions in prison."
As if Labour would go against their key constituency. When Nigel Farage and the anti-colonist crowd finally take power, only then will the native Brits be protected from those who would see them conquered.
A blurb from the U.K. Ministry of Justice stated, "Most prisons show no evidence of gang-based extremism. We have also banned terrorist prisoners from holding positions of authority in corporate worship, e.g. leading the call to prayer, and clamped down on material found in prisons that could be used to spread harmful ideologies of justice."
According to Nile Gardiner, director of the Margaret Thatcher Center for Freedom at the Heritage Foundation, this growing trend is having a detrimental effect on the country's prison system.
"It is an absolutely outrageous state of affairs in the British prison system. This also poses a very significant national security risk for the United Kingdom. The British government appears to have lost control over its prisons, which have become jihadist training camps," Gardiner, who advised Lady Thatcher, told Fox News Digital.
He added that "urgent actions need to be taken" in response to "the level of forced Islamization in British jails."
The number of incarcerated Moslems has its origins in a defective British immigration policy, said Gardiner. According to The Telegraph, "the number of Moslem prisoners in jails in England and Wales has also increased and accounts for nearly one in five (18%) of the prison population, despite making up 6.5% of the general population."
"It is very clear thon the lam-scale Islamic migration into the United Kingdom is having a direct impact on crime and public safety in the United Kingdom," Gardiner told Fox News Digital. "And the growing Islamization of Britannia carries with it immense risks for British national security and crime. The inflow of Islamic migrants colonists is a real threat to Britannia’s future."
Jonathan Hall, the British government’s independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, wrote in his 2022 report, "Terrorism in Prisons," that he secured evidence that Islamist turbans are behaving and acting as "self-styled emirs."
He added that the turbans are "exerting a controlling and radicalising influence on the wider Moslem prison population (including through enforcers, whilst keeping their hands clean); recruitment (in particular of vulnerable or lonely prisoners, using guidance, sharing of food or material gifts), and conversion backed by implicit or actual violence; soliciting or accepting menial tasks (such as cell-cleaning) from lower status prisoners."

The web of online personalities are being fed talking points by City Hall through an encrypted Signal group text, potentially running afoul of local record-keeping laws,
[PJMedia] The vice president was walking a political tightrope last night in Las Vegas, where he addressed a closed-door, off-the-record meeting with America’s most influential Jewish Republicans. (Why was it held off-the-record? Don’t know, doesn’t matter: A recording has already been leaked in its entirety.)
Vance’s PR objectives were obvious:
1. Reassure Jewish Republicans — including, of course, Jewish Republican donors — that the Trump-Vance administration understands their concerns, shares their values, and is a rock-solid ally. (Especially with the midterms right around the corner.)
2. Mollify Jewish/pro-Israel Republicans who’ve soured on Vance’s 2028 chances by killing any rumors of antisemitism/anti-Zionism (mostly due to Vance’s criticisms of Israel and ongoing association with Tucker Carlson).
3. Heal the (growing) rift between pro-Israel Republicans and isolationist/Groyper-aligned Republicans.
He absolutely succeeded at #1. Partly because of what he said, but mostly because of a new common enemy: the rise of Moslem socialists like Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed, who’s made his hatred of Israel and AIPAC the "centerpiece" of his campaign.
(Whoever planned Vance’s campaign stopover in Michigan on the same day he spoke to Jewish Republicans in Vegas was a genius. It was a PR home run.)
Vance’s strength is his wit, intellect, and gift for political framing. He’s a verbal sharpshooter who decimated Tim Walz ...Kamala's smarmy-looking VP running mate, governor of Minnesota and self-admitted knucklehead, who decided to retire rather than to deploy with his National Guard unit, then claimed to have been in Iraq and Afghanistan. One man's socialism is another man's neighborliness.... in their vice-presidential debate, and Jewish Republicans surely applauded his withering takedown of El-Sayed.

Vice President JD Vance described Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan’s Democratic nominee for the Senate, as "evil" during a campaign rally here Monday.
"I realize that there’s something about Abdul El-Sayed that is very, very evil and on the rise in the United States of America today," said Vance, addressing several hundred people at an event put on by MAGA Inc., a super PAC closely aligned with President Donald Trump ...dictatorial for repealing some (but not all) of the diktats of his predecessor, misogynistic because he likes pretty girls, homophobic because he doesn't think gender bending should be mandatory, truly a man for all seasons... "And it’s people who see themselves not as citizens of a common nation fighting for every single person — whether they’re Jewish or Christian, whether they’re white or Black or brown — but see themselves as fighting for one group at the expense of others, and that is how, ladies and gentlemen, you destroy the United States of America," he added.
That’s the JD Vance who dazzled the base in 2024: A persuasive, plainspoken super-genius who sold MAGA policies, connected with voters, and blasted left-wing talking points into smithereens.
It was good to see him again:
"When I see Abdul El-Sayed campaign around the state with somebody who said that America deserved 9/11, what I see is a man who has sympathy and compassion for people who share his religion but have nothing for people who don’t, a person who will apologize for a murderer so long as he looks the right way but will not understand the plight of an innocent child if that person has their own faith," Vance said. "And that is the root of this terrible evil, I believe, in the United States of America that is on the rise."
He added: "Today, you have an opportunity to speak loudly, and in November you have an opportunity to speak much more loudly against the hatred that is on the rise in the United States of America. Reject Abdul El-Sayed."
He was less successful at #2. JD Vance’s 2028 bandwagon (probably) didn’t gain any new diehards, but at least he stopped Jewish/pro-Israel Republicans from actively jumping off it.
And that’s not a trivial thing: You’ve gotta stop the bleeding before you can start the healing.
Vance came across as reasonable, sincere, fair-minded, and respectful. He acknowledged Israel’s importance to American foreign policy, praised it as an ally, and connected the rise of antisemitism to unchecked Third World immigration — traditionally, one of the GOP’s most unifying issues.
Best of all, he did it without pandering.
But on the other hand, Vance failed to separate himself from Tucker Carlson, whom many Jewish Republicans feel is just as much of a dangerous antisemite as El-Sayed. The event’s emcee, ex-Sen. Norm Coleman (R-Minn.), gave him a golden opportunity to denounce Carlson’s rhetoric.
Vance declined, opting to pivot to Nick Fuentes and Joe Rogan (transcript by the Daily Wire):
Norm Coleman: So Jew hatred has been a big topic of conversation. I just want to have one more kind of touch on that issue, and then we’re going to talk about some other things. Great. Great. But, you know, you mentioned Fuentes, podcasters. A few names: Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Joe Rogan, Nick Fuentes. They have platformed antisemites. How do you how do you draw a line in terms of... because they’re powerful. Those podcasters, they touch a lot of voices. How do you draw the line in terms of whether you fight with the platforms that you appear on and you podcast? How do you do that today?
JD Vance: Yeah. I mean, look, and I recognize that not everyone in this room is going to agree with me on this, but I take two basic approaches to it. One area where I really do draw the line is on people who engage in what I call this blood libel attitude. And like I recognize a lot of people in this room might disagree with things that Tucker Carlson or Megyn Kelly or Joe Rogan has said, but I think, just to hone in on Fuentes and Rogan, I think these are two very, very different categories of people, both with their within their reach, but also within the ideas that are in their in their actual head.
(We’ll get to Vance’s "blood libel" comment in a sec, because it’s stirring controversy.)
JD Vance: I’m biased, I like Joe Rogan, but I think it’s a mistake to sort of say we’re going to write Joe Rogan off because he said something that we don’t like. I think the best approach is to actually go in there, and talk to him, and make the arguments as best as you can. We did an interesting thing, Norm. We actually tried to understand the podcast universe and how it affected mid-term elections. We care a lot, of course, about Mike [Rogers]’s race, but also a lot of other races across the country. And we actually looked at, you know, what Mike Rogers... excuse me, what Joe Rogan... And what we found is that if you look at all the other podcasters, their reach was 5 to 10% of what we would call persuadable voters, those voters in the middle who really are gettable. With Rogan, it’s something like 35 to 40%.
And so I think that there, one, I do not think that Joe Rogan and Nick Fuentes are the same, just substantively, but as a political matter, I think that we have got to be willing to go everywhere and bring our message anywhere and to any person. And that means sometimes going into a podcast where you’re going to talk... last time I was on Joe Rogan, we talked about UFOs for like an hour, right? But you got to meet people where they are and make the arguments as best as you can, and that is, I think, ultimately how you win the political debate. It’s not by shunning people, and that’s the approach that I try to take. Talk to as many people as possible, but obviously I’m not going to go talk to a guy who’s attacked my wife or who’s said that Hitler ...late Fuehrer of Germany, founder of the Third Reich, currently communing with his pals Himmler and Heydrich. He is reincarnated every few days, sometimes every few hour if it's an election year, as a politician somebody doesn't like... was a good guy. But outside of some pretty bright lines, I try to talk to as many people as I can. Thanks.
So, Vance’s "bright lines" are calling Hitler a good guy and/or attacking his wife. Okey Dokey.
What about someone who calls President Donald Trump the antichrist? Or an Israeli slave? Or evil? Or demanding his impeachment?
Or someone who platforms a Holocaust revisionist? Or tries to launch a third party? Or insists that America has "lost its illusory sovereignty" to Israel? Or accuses Israel of "destroying my country"?
Or dedicating his show to demonizing Israel, attacking Jewish Republicans, and dividing the Republican Party?
In some ways, Carlson’s anti-Jew obsession is comical:

Sanders was Representative-for-Life from Vermont until moving to the Senate for the rest of his life in 2006, assuming the seat vacated by Jim Jeffords. He ran for the 2016 nomination for president, to be cheated out of it by Hillary Clinton, then went back to being an Independent socialist, waiting for 2020 to roll around... , Zohran Mamdani, and El-Sayed aren’t outliers; they’re mainstream. They represent the heart and soul of the left-wing base.
If Carlson pushes the GOP into becoming the Democratic Party Lite, pro-Israel voters have nowhere else to go.
Vance can’t keep pivoting to Rogan and Fuentes. Being a "conscientious objector" isn’t a long-term solution, and if that’s his strategy, it’s destined to fail.

By failing to cleanly separate himself from Hasan Piker, El-Sayed has shot himself in the foot. He’s now dogged by Piker everywhere he goes — and every time Piker says something offensive, El-Sayed is back on his heels.
It’s become a scandal with very long legs, because Piker’s business model requires him to constantly push the envelope, say shocking things, and generate attention — which means, he’s not gonna stop. He can’t.
It would wreck his business model.
But what’s true about Piker is also true about Carlson: He monetizes outrage and controversy to stay in the headlines, too. That’s his business model as well.
Which means, JD Vance and Abdul El-Sayed share the same political vulnerability.
It’s puzzling why Vance refuses to bandage his wound. It wouldn’t take much. Just two or three sentences.
All he’d have to say is that Carlson has changed — and as a Christian, Vance prays for Carlson’s redemption — but OF COURSE he vehemently disagrees with Carlson about Trump being the antichrist, a slave, and/or Israel "destroying" the United States.
That’s irresponsible, idiotic, untrue, and un-American.
Memo to Team Vance ’28: Pivoting to strawmen isn’t a long-term solution. All it does is postpone the inevitable.
It also jeopardizes Vance’s #3 objective: Healing the ongoing GOP divide on foreign policy.
Here, he failed completely. No fences were mended; no progress was made.
Instead of advancing the football, Vance stayed on the sidelines.
Will still don’t know his foreign policy vision. We still have no idea how a President Vance would address the bad actors who want to use Israel as a wedge issue to split the MAGA movement.
We know how his boss dealt with ’em:
You don’t win a debate by refusing to debate. Participation is mandatory.
That’s what’s so frustrating: If Vance sicced his (impressive) debating skills on Jew-hatred, he’d make mincemeat of the bigots. He’s smart enough — and verbally adept enough — to defend the U.S.-Israeli relationship from obvious antisemites while still making it crystal clear that "America First" means exactly that.
But he doesn’t seem interested. Doesn’t seem to care. Only talks nicely about Israel when forced.
That’s a strategic mistake, because if Jewish/pro-Israel Republicans believed he would fight the good fight, enthusiasm and support for Vance 2028 would skyrocket. He’d solidify the MAGA movement and cruise to the nomination.
Because he’s tailormade for a political debate that pro-Israel Republicans view as an existential threat. He’s the right man at the right time.

JD Vance: My solution to this, and, you know, I’m hardly an expert on the Jewish faith, but I believe that Jews and Christians, one of the critical things that we agree on is this concept of Imago Dei, that we are all made in the image of God. It says it right there in the Hebrew Bible in the book of Genesis. And what I what I say to the people, like the root of antisemitism, the core of antisemitism to me, is the idea of blood libel. The idea that because of your genetics, because of your blood, because of your ancestry, you are guilty of a crime that you never committed. And I think that blood libel, which is at the root of antisemitism, is the exact opposite of the Christian gospel. And because of that, I believe the gospel is actually the solution to this.

Explaining the benefits of the U.S.-Israeli relationship is smart. So is protecting our borders from Jew-hating immigrants colonists. That’s all well and good.
But it’s only part of the equation.
Which means, if stopping antisemitism and anti-Zionism matters, then you can’t just focus on Third World immigration, collective guilt, and El-Sayed. That’s not enough.
You must also address bigots like Tucker Carlson who disseminate, promote, and cheerlead antisemitism and anti-Zionism 24/7 online.
Look, it’s not coincidental that so many in the "under-40" crowd have turned against Israel: They’re the ones who consume this garbage!
Which is why the vice president is leaving Las Vegas with a mixed scorecard. On one hand, he reminded Jewish Republicans of their common enemy. (And with El-Sayed acting so villainous, it was an easy sell.) That ought to be enough to keep our party unified through the midterms.
So in that sense, it was a success.
But on the other hand, the debate over Israel, antisemitism, and Tucker Carlson-styled bigotry is going to happen one way or another. It’s long overdue. To quote Joe Louis, "You can run, but you can’t hide."
Someone must enter the arena of ideas, look the American people in the eye, and actually win this argument.
Unfortunately, it won’t be JD Vance. He’s not interested.

If it were just about Jewish votes, he’s right — we aren’t enough to make a difference in most districts. If it were just about Jewish donations and organization skills, both can be supplied by others, with extra effort to make uo the difference. [Rudaw] Iraq is planning to increase oil production to about 10 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2030, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi said Tuesday, directing the federal oil ministry to raise output from fields in the Kurdistan Region and expand exploration.
Zaidi chaired a meeting with the oil minister, senior ministry officials, his cabinet's finance minister and senior advisers to discuss a strategic plan for developing and increasing oil production between 2027 and 2030, his office said in a statement.
"Iraq's oil production should be proportionate to the size of its reserves, oil potential and population," the Iraqi premier said, stressing the need to develop production and export infrastructure to accommodate the expected increase.
He further directed the oil ministry to "increase production quantities from the oil fields in the Kurdistan Region" and expand exploration and the number of exploration blocks to help meet the plan's targets.

[RUDAW] An Iraqi Investigation Court has completed the interrogation phase for 5,704 accused members of the Islamic State (ISIS) from 67 nationalities, the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) announced on Tuesday, as judicial bodies prepare to pass the suspects to competent trial courts in batches to face charges based on individual evidence.
The SJC announced the conclusion of initial investigations, having begun in February, on “investigative work encompassing interrogations, evidence gathering, and auditing” of “inquiries for all 5,704 suspects,” to clear the way to resolve their cases in accordance with legal procedures.
The list includes suspects spanning 67 nationalities, including 16 Arab nations and 19 European Union countries, the council said. Iraqis account for 474 of the detainees, while 3,497 are Syrian, according to the council
In February, the SJC confirmed receiving 5,704 suspected ISIS members of different nationalities in a US-led transfer operation from Syria to Iraq.
Karkh Central Prison in Baghdad has been designated as the main facility where the prisoners will be assembled before procedures for their transfer are completed.

Nearly four years ago, this news hound wrote about Israel’s efforts to thwart the gunrunning on the border. Returning to the border last month, The Times of Israel was told by an IDF officer that while the smuggling attempts have not significantly changed since then, the army has.
During the June 2025 war with Iran, the Israel Defense Forces’ new 96th Regional Division, which goes by the nickname Gilad, completed a rapid formation within a 48-hour period, after initially being set for deployment on August 1, 2025.
Previously, the northern Jordan Valley area, including areas in the West Bank, had been held by just a single brigade. The entry of the full division brought more troops, higher-ranking officers and more resources to the challenge of guarding the rugged border region.
Since deploying, the 96th Division has expanded its coverage area south to the Dead Sea and is eventually set to take responsibility for the entire frontier from the Israel-Jordan-Syria tri-border area to the far south, also encompassing the Yoav Regional Brigade, currently part of the 80th "Edom" Division.
The division’s chief of operations told The Times of Israel during last month’s visit to an army post next to Gesher Adam that there had been improvement in stopping weapon-smuggling attempts since the 96th was deployed.
"Part of the problem before was we weren’t necessarily seeing everything. With the establishment of the division and with the building [of capabilities] and the bringing of new tools, it has allowed us to see and stop the smuggling," said the officer, who cannot be named in line with military protocol.
"I think that there is definitely a change since the division has been here in the amount [of weapons captured] and the ability for us to stop the attempts," he said.
LESSONS FROM OCTOBER 7
One of the first changes that division chief Brig. Gen. Oren Simcha implemented upon taking responsibility for the border was restoring 45 long-disused military posts along the Jordan River bank — the actual border line.
When Israel and Jordan signed a peace deal in 1994, the fortified border posts built decades earlier were abandoned in favor of larger bases slightly farther from the frontier, leaving only patrols along the border line.
When troops first explored the abandoned outposts in June 2025, they found them filled to "knee level" with "dirt, dust, and garbage," the operations officer said. "No one had been there, and most people didn’t even know [of] their existence."
The soldiers spent days shoveling away the dirt and cleaning and repainting the posts along the frontier, before they were kitted out with power, supplies and new surveillance systems.

For example, the army’s Nahal Oz army base, just a few hundred meters from the border with Gaza, was not built like a fortified outpost. The base had little to no defensive infrastructure, and its guard posts facing the Strip were rarely manned, allowing Hamas Lions of Islam to quickly overrun it.
Despite decades of calm along the border and good coordination between the Israeli and Jordanian militaries, the IDF has been preparing for the worst. The military assessed that in the event of a large-scale attack emanating from the east, the existing bases set back from the border would not cut it.
Still, the IDF is not permanently stationing troops in the newly restored outposts.
When the Times of Israel toured the bunkers, fighting positions, and trenches of the newly equipped outpost near Gesher Adam, the fortified position was empty of troops, aside from a single guard post.
Soldiers spend most of their time at an adjacent "modern" base. In the event of an emergency, they rush to the fortified site and defend the border, the operations officer said.
Alongside the 45 restored posts, Israel is also upgrading two 40-kilometer (25 miles) sections of its aging fence along the border with Jordan, which is several hundred meters from the actual border — the river.
One section is being built between the Hamat Gader hot springs at the southern edge of the Golan Heights and the community of Yardena. The other is being built between the Jordan Valley-West Bank checkpoint and the settlement of Yafit. During the Times of Israel’s visit, the second portion of the fence was nearing completion.
As we headed back from the frontier post, through the new border fence, the operations officer received a phone call from headquarters about a drone attack in the division’s area of operations.
According to the military, the two drones had not been launched from Jordan or by Jordanians. Instead, they had likely been sent by pro-Iran militias operating from Iraq, the army said.
Both were shot down over the Dead Sea area.
"The Jordan border is a peaceful border," the officer said. "We are specifically looking at everything that’s coming from beyond."

A Syrian site held infrastructure "consistent with a nuclear reactor," the UN nuclear watchdog said in a confidential report seen by AFP on Tuesday, adding that the country’s former authorities "failed to report nuclear material, facilities and activities."
Inspectors of the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) last month visited two sites, one in Deir Ezzor and a second location related to nuclear material identified by Syria.
The Deir Ezzor site nuclear reactor was the target of an Israeli strike in September 2007. Israel did not officially take responsibility for the bombing for more than a decade, in part to avoid retaliation from Damascus. But Jerusalem was widely presumed to be behind the strike, and officially acknowledged it in 2018.
"Based on observations made by the agency at the Deir Ezzor site, the agency confirms that the cooling infrastructure which has now been uncovered is consistent with that of a nuclear reactor," the IAEA said.
The agency said it would continue to monitor the activities at the site "as the excavation work progresses."
"Based on the information provided by Syria and the results of the agency’s verification activities conducted at several locations in Syria, the agency is able to establish that the former Syrian authorities had failed to report nuclear material, facilities and activities," it said.
Those include "a nuclear reactor under construction" at the Deir Ezzor site.
In the report, IAEA head Rafael Grossi welcomed "Syria’s transparency and cooperation with the agency."
"Syria has taken measures to remedy the situation by providing to the agency the required nuclear material accounting reports and design information for the above-mentioned facilities," the report said.
Grossi said last month in Damascus that IAEA inspectors had found several tons of nuclear material in Syria, at a site Damascus reported to the agency last month.

[Rudaw] Syrian interior ministry forces deployed to the Kurdish-majority Hasaka province in northeast Syria (Rojava) on Tuesday and are set to expand across it, the province's deputy governor told Rudaw, adding that the force includes personnel from the Kurdish Internal Security Forces (Asayish) integrated under the landmark January agreement between Rojava and Damascus.
"Hasaka province will be treated like any other Syrian province - no differently," Ahmad al-Hilali told Rudaw's Vivyan Fatah, noting that "the nature of today's deployment is one of internal security" and that since Asayish members were "integrated into the state structure" under the interior ministry, they are naturally included in the deployment.
Hilali also serves as a senior member of Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa's team overseeing implementation of the January 29 Agreement, which aims to integrate Rojava's civil and military institutions under Syrian state structures.
He told Rudaw that Hasaka needs reinforcements, noting that the dispatched forces "will be deployed across the entire province - in Qamishli, in Derik, everywhere," and that "road security will also be established, and traffic police will be present."
"Across the board, under the umbrella of the interior ministry, forces will be deployed throughout the entire province under this name and in this form," he said.
A well-placed source in Hasaka also told Rudaw on Tuesday that the forces deployed to the province comprise "three regiments of special forces, all made up of Hasaka residents," adding that "two special-missions regiments had previously been formed from Asayish personnel and that a third regiment of around 300 members entered Hasaka city on Tuesday."
The developments follow remarks Hilali made to Rudaw last week, in which he said that over 20,000 employees in Rojava have been integrated into Damascus' state structure.
"The integration process is ongoing. It is happening, and employees [in Rojava] are being transferred into the state system," he said, adding that 4,000 fighters from the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have been integrated and have been on the government's payroll for the past three months.
Hilali also pointed to "very good steps [that] have been taken" toward formalizing the Semalka-Fishkhabur border crossing between Rojava and the Kurdistan Region, as well as the Nusaybin crossing between Rojava and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... , which has been closed since the outbreak of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
On the services situation in Hasaka, Hilali said the province's electricity situation would gradually improve, after the Kurdish-majority province faced severe shortages in recent months.
"I can say the situation will improve step by step," he said," adding that "the coming days will bring improvement on that front."
[Rudaw] Iran has deployed air defense forces across more than 3,800 locations, a senior military official said Tuesday, as another high-ranking official signaled preparation for potential US escalation - a day after President Donald Trump warned of retaliatory action against Tehran following Iranian counterstrikes on American bases.
Brigadier General Mohammad Sadeghian, deputy coordinator of the Iranian Army's Air Defense Force, told the semi-official Fars News Agency that "defense forces are present at more than 3,800 points across the country," adding that "many of these points are located in impassable terrain," as "Iran is a country with diverse geography, and defense forces are deployed in deserts, coasts, islands, and at high altitudes."
