A Memphis pizza restaurant is facing backlash after refusing service to four members of the Tennessee National Guard last weekend, with the owner telling Fox News Digital he stands by the decision and would "make the same decision tomorrow."
Miles Tamboli, owner of Tamboli's Pasta & Pizza, said he refused to serve the Guardsmen on Saturday night because he opposes the federally led Memphis Safe Task Force, arguing the use of National Guard troops in local law enforcement has made the city less safe rather than more secure.
"I love this country and I love this city, and that is exactly why I made this call," Tamboli told Fox News Digital in a statement. "I want Memphis to be safe. Every business owner does. And the honest truth is that Memphis was already getting safer before this Task Force ever arrived. Crime was at a 25-year low through the first eight months of 2025, according to the Memphis Police Department's own data, later confirmed by an independent Tennessee Bureau of Investigation audit. That progress was earned by the people of this city. It was not delivered by soldiers."
The Memphis Safe Task Force is a federally led initiative established in September 2025 by President Donald Trump to stop violent crime in the city. The task force combines local police with agents from various federal agencies, the Tennessee National Guard, and state troopers to enforce public safety laws.
"What the Task Force has actually done is make this city harder to live in," Tamboli continued. "Its own records show that the overwhelming majority of its arrests began with routine traffic stops, not violent crime. Families in this city are now afraid to drive to work, afraid to take their kids to school, afraid to be seen. Our own schools reported that fear drove children to stop showing up to class. And this month, a 20-year-old Memphian named Tyrin Johnson was shot and killed by National Guard troops during a foot chase, with no body camera footage and no answers for his family. None of that makes us safer. It makes us less safe, and it does the most damage to the people who were already struggling."
Tamboli said he believes that the approach being taken to address public safety isn’t correct.
"Being pro-safety means telling the truth about what actually protects a community, and it is not soldiers trained for combat doing the work of police officers," Tamboli said. "That mismatch is dangerous for the people of Memphis and dangerous for the troops themselves, who were sent here to do a job they were never trained for. The founders wrote their objection to standing armies among the people into the Declaration of Independence itself, because they understood that a free country does not let the military police its own citizens. That principle is older than any political party, and I am not willing to abandon it because it became inconvenient."
On his restaurant’s website, Tamboli said that his family came to the mid-South in 1909 and were part of a group of people who eventually were called the Delta Italians.
"Months ago I joined dozens of other local businesses in a public commitment to stand against the military policing our streets, an act of patriotism and conscience both, and I would make the same decision tomorrow," Tamboli said.
Tamboli admitted in an interview with News Channel 3 in Memphis that it had been bad for business.
"None of it changes my position. If anything, it confirms why this matters," Tamboli told the outlet.
Users on X shared outrage over the incident, with one person writing, "I’m from Memphis. Tamboli’s Pasta & Pizza refused to serve uninformed Tennessee National Guard members who were just trying to eat. Their owner turned them away. That’s unacceptable. I stand with the National Guard. Businesses that disrespect the men and women protecting our city don’t deserve our support," and included the hashtag, #BoycottTamboli.

One of the many things I love about the USA, is everyone has a right to take and express their position on a subject. No matter how stupid, unpopular, or detrimental it is to their own well being.
Now, the question is. How many in the Memphis area will agree and Democrats will flock to his establishment to support his Liberal stupidity, or rob it?

Usually a restaurant operates on a tight margin. Jimmy’s Famous Seafood took a risk in speaking out, for instance, but MAGA folks seem to be more responsive with respect to support or boycotting. It’s sort of hard to parlay refusing service to uniformed military as patriotism. Pizza would have to be Soup Nazi good for this to work out.

[BB] The Trump administration is rescinding a Biden-era rule that ignored a migrant’s use of welfare, food stamps, and other tax-paid subsidies when determining eligibility for permanent legal status.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing to eliminate the Biden rule and will reinstate the “public charge” test on whether or not a migrant is a good candidate for a green card, CBS News reported.
The “public charge” test determines if a migrant is self-sufficient, and thereby a worthy addition to our society, or if they are on public assistance and are therefore not a productive prospect for residency.
The rule states that a migrant can be deemed inadmissible if they become a “public charge” who is supported by taxpayers. In 2022, the Biden administration watered down the rule so that migrants could still qualify for a green card even if they are on some sort of public assistance.
DHS, though, is reinstating the broader interpretation implemented in 2016 that allows officers to evaluate a green card applicant based on their age, health, family status, assets, financial resources, education, skills and if they receive means-tested taxpayer-funded benefits.
Unlike the Biden era rule, DHS is adding food stamps, use of Medicaid funds, and housing assistance to the proscription list.
DHS estimated the new rule could affect up to 588,000 applicants who are applying from inside the country and reportedly could go into effect in October.
The rule is not only a Trump policy. The public charge rule was first implemented in 1999 under the Clinton presidency.

Not sure that this will impact the Somali scammers. They seem to be maximizing their abuse of the system without ever qualifying for a W2. It may impact their ability to pyramid their relatives in as “employees.” I don’t think there is any current guardrail to prevent illegals from owning businesses or at least that seems to be how all the scam Uzbeki trucking firms are formed in Ohio.
I am fine with reversing the rule but mostly I want to see the temporary protective statuses revoked for most countries, scammers prosecuted including the CDL issuers, and deportations.

Galmudug is not trying to obtain international recognition as a separate nation, but rather considers itself autonomous within the larger Somali federalism, for what that's worth... state.
The training is being provided by foreign instructors from Romania, Ukraine, South Africa, and Colombia under a Saudi-funded initiative, the reports said.
Saudi military officers recently visited the training sites to review the progress of the programme, according to the reports.
The defence agreement, signed earlier this year, is intended to strengthen military cooperation between the two countries, although its implementation has largely remained out of public view.
The move underscores Saudi Arabia's growing security engagement in Somalia, joining other Gulf states seeking greater strategic influence in the country. [IsraelTimes] Source close to the Yemeni group says it is ready to launch missile and drone attacks on shipping near Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a move that would exacerbate the global energy crisis.
Iran has asked Yemen’s Houthi rebels to stand ready to close the Red Sea oil route if the United States strikes Iranian power infrastructure, three sources told Reuters on Thursday, posing a potent new threat to global energy supplies.
The idea has been discussed within the Islamic Republic’s leadership, and the message has been conveyed to Iran’s Houthi allies, two senior Iranian sources and a regional source familiar with the matter said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The sources said the Houthis had been informed recently of Tehran’s request, which has not been previously reported.
They did not give further details on how it had been conveyed or whether it was after US President Donald Trump’s threat to attack Iranian power infrastructure on Tuesday.
Iran’s foreign ministry and a spokesperson for the Houthis were not immediately available to respond to Reuters’ request.
A source close to the Houthis said the group had completed preparations to attack shipping by deploying missiles and drones near Bab el-Mandeb Strait, the gateway to the Red Sea, in Yemen’s highlands overlooking Hodeidah and the Gulf of Aden and was awaiting the order to begin.
Any threat to the Red Sea and its Bab el-Mandeb gateway risks hugely exacerbating the global energy crisis triggered by Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and underscores the explosive risks stemming from a new round of warfare.
With the Strait of Hormuz already shut, any Houthi attacks on vessels or ports in the Red Sea would leave the Middle East’s two main oil export routes disrupted simultaneously, opening a new front in both the energy crisis and Iran’s wider conflict with the United States.
Representatives of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) who are already in Yemen will control the decision on when to close the Bab el-Mandeb strait, said the source close to the Houthis.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared Thursday that violent far-left political terrorism "can no longer be denied" as he urged more than 60 countries gathered in Washington to treat the threat as a global counterterrorism priority.
Speaking at the opening of a State Department summit attended by roughly 65 foreign delegations, Rubio said governments had spent too long overlooking what he described as a resurgence of transnational far-left extremist violence and called for greater international cooperation to counter it.
Rubio described radical leftism as "a poisonous resentment cloaked in the language of equality and justice."
"Today we face a new wave of this old evil here in the United States: the share of left-wing terrorist attacks and plots has risen to levels not seen in decades," the secretary went on.
Rubio said the administration is rebuilding the U.S. counterterrorism strategy around what it views as an increasingly transnational threat, announcing that additional foreign terrorist organization designations are forthcoming after the State Department designated four foreign far-left groups in November 2025.
Rubio said far-left extremist networks coordinate across borders by sharing training materials, encrypted communications, financing and safe houses while working alongside hostile foreign states. He argued the United States and its allies must respond by expanding intelligence sharing, law enforcement cooperation and efforts to disrupt terrorist financing.
"You are here because this is real, and it is getting worse, and it can no longer be denied, and it can no longer be ignored," Rubio said. "It is time to crush this evil forever."
"It's time for people of the civilized world to defend themselves," he added.
A foreign terrorist organization designation criminalizes providing material support to the group, enables the U.S. government to freeze assets under its jurisdiction and blocks members from entering the United States.
Governments had spent the past 25 years building systems to combat jihadist terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks, Madrid train bombings and the London transit attacks, Rubio said, arguing that strategy helped sharply reduce jihadist plots and deaths in the West.
Rubio accused media organizations, universities and other "legacy" institutions of minimizing left-wing violence or treating it as a form of political expression. He pointed to the 2020 riots after George Floyd’s death, saying local officials in some cities refused to prosecute people who committed violence and destruction.
"You will no doubt see the dogma rear its head in the coverage of this very conference, in spite of the clear and the undeniable reality, in spite of the objective numbers and statistics, in spite of the fact that in this room today there are representatives from across the political spectrum, we will hear that this kind of organized violence and terror will be dismissed," Rubio said. "It will be dismissed as a partisan fiction."
Thursday's event included FBI Director Kash Patel, Education Secretary Linda McMahon, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller.
"A whole industry grew up in our countries around the study of extremism," Rubio continued. "We have think tanks and fellowships and journals and consultancies, with the unspoken understanding among them… that only one kind of political violence was a true threat to the system."
Administration officials said the ministerial is the culmination of an eight-month diplomatic effort to convince foreign governments that violent far-left extremist networks have become a growing cross-border threat requiring greater international coordination.
The initiative comes as some analysts and foreign officials have questioned whether violent far-left groups constitute a cohesive international terrorism threat comparable to Islamist extremist organizations. Others have raised concerns governments could use such initiatives to target political opponents under the banner of counterterrorism.
Administration officials rejected those concerns Wednesday, arguing the effort is narrowly focused on criminal and terrorist violence rather than political beliefs.
"We haven't waded into trying to disambiguate people's beliefs and ideologies," a senior State Department official told reporters. "In America, you can believe anything you want. The minute that you cross the legal threshold, that changes."
Officials argue governments spent much of the past two decades concentrating on jihadist terrorism while underestimating what they describe as a resurgence of politically motivated violence from violent far-left extremist networks operating across borders.
"This has been a blind spot for a lot of our partners, frankly. They have not seen these trends... since the 1970s," the senior State Department official said. "Our partners have talked to us about the rise of assassinations or assassination plots."
Administration officials pointed to a series of recent attacks in Europe that they argue underscore the need for greater international cooperation.
On July 1, coordinated firebomb attacks targeted the homes of members of Greece's governing New Democracy party in Thessaloniki, killing the mother of parliamentary candidate Afroditi Nestora and injuring four others. Greek anti-terrorism police later arrested three suspects.
In January, an arson attack on a power transmission facility in Berlin, Germany, knocked out electricity to tens of thousands of homes and businesses. German authorities later transferred the investigation to the federal prosecutor over suspected involvement by a terrorist organization.
The meeting builds on a series of actions the administration has taken since late 2025, including designating four foreign far-left organizations as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists, along with offering a reward of up to $10 million for information leading to the disruption of their financial networks.
Officials also disputed reports that foreign partners were reluctant to participate, saying several governments approached the United States seeking to join the initiative after recognizing similar trends within their own borders.
"We've had countries who have reached out to us that want to be part of this," the senior State Department official said.
The four organizations designated by the administration in November were Antifa Ost, the Informal Anarchist Federation/International Revolutionary Front (FAI/FRI), Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense. The administration says the groups, which operate in Germany, Italy and Greece, have coordinated violent attacks across national borders.

[FoxNews] Trump releases trove of information related to ballot counting vulnerabilities, China interference, Michigan voter-registration investigation and noncitizens on voter rolls
President Donald Trump addressed the nation Thursday evening on "free and fair" elections, announcing the declassification of critical intelligence that reveals, as he said, "shocking vulnerabilities" related to "hacking, exploitation and foreign interference."
"This vital information is for many years been covered up and hidden from you," Trump said. "The American people are beautiful, our great American people. But that all changes right now."
Trump did not claim China changed votes or altered election results. Instead, he argued Beijing engaged in an influence campaign aimed at shaping U.S. public perceptions.
Documents were posted to the White House website during the president's speech.
The speech came as his administration has aggressively pushed policies, legislation and executive orders to secure U.S. elections.
"The documents we will release starting tonight have been gathered by the White House Government Transparency Taskforce, a great group of people, along with the staff of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, supported by our top intelligence agency chiefs, who have all personally reviewed the findings we are presenting this evening and fully confirmed their authenticity," Trump said Thursday.
Leading up to the address, Trump teased that his speech would be "big news." Trump touted his new Trump Accounts and spoke about how his administration has lowered drug prices, reduced crime and strengthened the border — with the main focus on securing American elections.
Trump said the disclosures underscore its push for stricter election security measures and renewed calls for Congress to pass the SAVE America Act, while critics have disputed many of Trump's claims about the 2020 election and widespread voter fraud.
Vice President JD Vance, FBI Director Kash Patel, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin were among the White House officials seated in the East Room.
The White House released four sections of documents focused on alleged vulnerabilities in electronic voting and ballot-counting systems, China’s acquisition and exploitation of American voter data, Michigan voter-registration investigation and noncitizens on state voter rolls.
Election law expert and senior legal fellow at Advancing American Freedom Hans von Spakovsky told Fox News Digital that Trump's allegations are shocking, especially given that they are from reports produced by the CIA, FBI, and other intelligence agencies.
"The president should be commended for declassifying and releasing the reports that support his claims so they can be reviewed in depth," said von Spakovsky.
Trump said China obtained information about American voters such as names, addresses, phone numbers, political affiliations and other personal information to form a dedicated unit to exploit the voter data it had acquired.
"China has all along adhered to the principle of non-interference in other's internal affairs. The U.S. election is an internal matter of the U.S. Its outcome is determined by the votes of the American people," Chinese Embassy spokesperson Mr. Liu Chang said in a statement to Fox News Digital.
"China has never and will never interfere in the presidential elections of the U.S," Chang added.
Reports from the CIA and National Security Agency about China’s interference were kept out of Trump’s almost daily presidential briefings, Trump claimed. Trump also said Congress also was not notified.
I do hope those involved were summarily fired and their classifications revoked — as a first step.
Trump called on the director of national intelligence, the Department of Justice, the FBI and the CIA to launch an investigation and, if appropriate, fire and press criminal charges against those involved.
"To the extent that these intrusions into our election system were covered up, as the president alleges, and hidden from the public, Congress, state election officials, and leadership in the Executive Branch, Pres. Trump is right that everyone involved in that coverup should be investigated and prosecuted for any criminal violations of the law," said von Spakovsky.
Trump again highlighted the issue of noncitizens on voter rolls as he renewed his push for the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship and photo identification to register and vote in federal elections.
"I've also ordered DHS to notify every state about noncitizens on their voter rolls and direct them to remove all ineligible voters from the lists immediately," said Trump.
The Department of Homeland Security told election officials in California, New Jersey, Nevada and Pennsylvania that a preliminary review identified more than 256,000 potential noncitizens on the states' voter rolls, according to letters obtained by Fox News Digital.
Trump has pushed to get the SAVE America Act passed, which includes the long-sought voter ID and citizenship verification — which Republicans say is key to ensuring elections are safe and secure.
Trump has tried to attach the stalled election legislation to defense spending, holding housing legislation hostage and playing Senate primary politics.
Republicans are running against the clock to pass the stalled elections bill before the party’s midterm window narrows.
Democratic lawmakers swiftly condemned Trump's remarks and criticized the SAVE Act.
"Not now. Not ever. The SAVE Act is dead on arrival in the United States Senate," Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X reposting Trump’s speech.
"Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. And now he’s trying to rig this year’s election with the SAVE America Act to make it harder to vote for millions of women, veterans, rural folks, & voters of color," wrote Democratic Massachusetts Rep. Ayanna Pressley.
"Tonight seems to be the ceremonial kickoff of President Trump’s campaign to interfere in the November election. Trump has badly lost independent voters, even MAGA is disheartened; he is failing and unpopular, and he’s dragging his party down with him in the midterms," said Rhode Island Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse.

"The Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court handed down a two-year rigorous prison sentence to the convict in his presence, along with a fine of 10 million dinars," the commission posted on Facebook, noting that the "ruling came after he demanded $50,000 in exchange for intervening to close the investigative committees formed against the complainant in the Karkh First Education Directorate, and to keep the complainant in his position as a school principal."
The sentence comes as Iraq continues a nationwide anti-corruption campaign launched by Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi in late June in coordination with the Federal Commission of Integrity and the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC).
Known as Operation Dawn, the campaign has resulted in the arrest of dozens of Iraqi politicians and politicians, former officials, and senior babus government employees, in addition to hundreds of millions of dollars in stolen assets and seized state properties illegally transferred into private ownership.
The commission said the court found the evidence and testimony presented during the trial sufficient to prove the charges, issuing its ruling under resolution 160, one of Iraq's anti-corruption legal provisions.
Under Iraq’s 1983 resolution 160, public employees who accept or solicit bribes to perform or neglect official duties face five to 10 years in prison and fines determined by the court.
Iraq ranked 136th out of 180 countries in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) in 2025, scoring 28 out of 100, reflecting a high prevalence of public-sector corruption compared to global standards.

The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Thursday released a statement announcing the latest seizures made involving continuing investigation into former oil deputy minister of refining affairs Adnan Jumaili, who remains in custody on corruption charges.
"The total funds recovered today amount to 25 billion Iraqi dinars, $200,000, in addition to four kilograms of gold jewelry," the judge said in a statement by the SJC, in which part of the money was recovered from individuals holding the funds, while the remaining cash was found hidden inside the walls of several houses.
Jumaili's arrest is the first major corruption case under Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's administration and forms part of Operation Dawn, a nationwide anti-corruption campaign launched in late June in coordination with Iraq's Federal Commission of Integrity.
The operation has led to the arrest of dozens of current and former officials and the recovery of large amounts of stolen public funds as part of its campaign against corruption.
The latest recovery comes days after SJC announced the seizure of 375 kilograms of gold, including 358 kilograms recovered in coordination with the Kurdistan Region, also linked to the investigation into Jumaili.
Earlier this week, authorities also confiscated nine commercial properties, three flour mills in Nineveh province, and seven transport trucks connected to the same case.
According to previous announcements by the SJC, authorities had already confiscated assets linked to Jumaili worth at least 127 billion Iraqi dinars (about $97 million), $24 million in cash, real estate, vehicles, and gold jewelry.
[Rudaw] Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi on Thursday ordered the formation of a "high-level committee" to investigate the attempted smuggling of "weapons and missiles" from Iraq into Syria, Baghdad authorities confirmed.
The committee is set to operate in coordination with Syrian authorities, who earlier in the day said they had foiled an attempt to smuggle a large shipment of "advanced weapons" from Iraq through Syria to the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement in Leb ...The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. Only one of those statements is an exaggeration.... "Coordination will also take place with the Syrian side to determine all the details surrounding the operation and hold those responsible for any shortcomings accountable, in a manner that ensures the security and stability of the shared border and prevents any attempts to undermine national security," the Cell added.
Of note, the SMC is the media arm of Iraq's Joint Operations Command (JOC), which reports directly to the Iraqi prime minister.
[Rudaw] The UAE-based Dana Gas announced its decision on Thursday to temporarily suspend all operations in its giant gas field near Sulaimani, citing "credible threats" and escalating regional tensions.
"All main production facilities associated with Khor Mor [in Chamchamal] have ceased to work temporarily," their statement read.

Dana Gas has stated that they will "monitor" the situation in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the federal government to reinstate production.
Khor Mor resumed operations in mid-April after more than 42 days of disruption caused by the US-Israeli war against Iran, which began on February 28.
Khor Mor field, located east of Sulaimani province, supplies the Kurdistan Region’s electrical and cooking gas demands. Its earlier shutdown resulted in the reduction of five to eight hours of available power in most areas as well as a sharp rise in cooking gas prices.
In March, Kurdistan Region Presidency spokesperson Dilshad Shahab asserted that halting operations in the field was primarily driven by the fear of attacks launched by gangs in Iraq rather than "out of fear of being directed from Iran, America, or Israel."
Even before the ensuing escalations, the field has been a primary target for Iranian-backed gangs in Iraq. An earlier drone attack in November 2025 led to a palpable loss of 80% in output across the Kurdistan Region.
The "Islamic Resistance® of Iraq (IRI)" - an umbrella group of armed factions backed by Iran - joined in on Tehran’s retaliatory strikes against the US during the war, claiming responsibility for hundreds of internal attacks against US interests in the country as well as throughout the region.
Based on Rudaw's records, Iran and the IRI have struck the Kurdistan Region with upwards of 800 drones and missiles, resulting in multiple casualties as well as disruption of economic activities.
Kurdish officials have asked Baghdad to deploy air defenses to safeguard oil companies operating there. A security team from the Iraqi government visited Erbil in mi-June to execute preliminary investigations regarding the procurement of air defense systems, pending purchase from Baghdad.

"The programme of the government is to restrict the possession of weapons to the state. We will co-operate with those who surrender their weapons," Zaidi said, adding that "after September 30, we will not allow any entity besides the state to carry any weapons."
Influential and prominent gangs, such as Saraya al-Salam and Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq, have already announced their plans to disarm and join the official Iraqi security apparatus, with at least three gangs, including Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba and Kata’ib Hezbollah, refusing to disarm.
IRI issued a statement on Saturday saying that their weapons are "never a bargaining chip" but rather "a doctrine and a trust carried by our fighters."
"We will not stop at what we have achieved," the statement said. "We will continue with all our determination to develop our military and security capabilities, both qualitatively and quantitatively, and raise the readiness of our forces in line with the growing challenges and threats posed by the Zionist-American enemy."
[Rudaw] Operations and exports in the Kurdistan Region's northern Atrush and Sarsang oilfields have resumed, ShaMaran Petroleum, the Canadian stakeholder in both fields, said in a statement, pointing to a temporary suspension caused by regional tensions.
The Atrush field is currently producing approximately 37,000 barrels of oil per day (bpd), with output expected to rise above 40,000 bpd in the near future, according to a Monday report from the company.
Conversely, production at Sarsang has dropped to 7,000 bpd after the field was struck twice during the Iran war, sustaining significant damage to storage facilities and production equipment, the firm added.
The working interests in the Atrush oil field are structured with ShaMaran holding 50 percent, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) holding 25 percent, and American company HKN Energy holding 25 percent as operator.
In the Sarsang field, HKN Energy holds a 62 percent interest as operator, while ShaMaran holds 18 percent and the KRG holds 20 percent.
Before the six-week conflict, at the start of February 2026, Atrush was producing 30,000 bpd, while Sarsang was producing 27,000 bpd. Production at the former has since risen, while at the latter it has fallen sharply.
According to the Monday report, HKN is continuously working to identify the most effective recovery path to restore the fields to full production capacity once the damage assessment is complete.
Moreover, it added that ShaMaran Petroleum, together with its partners, is closely monitoring the security situation in the region to safeguard its staff, as efforts are also ongoing to finalize a tripartite agreement between Baghdad and Erbil to secure oil exports at international market prices for all participating foreign oil companies.
[IsraelTimes] The Paleostinian Authority-linked body that manages Ramallah’s new welfare program has released the summary of an independent audit that determined that the system is not incentivizing recipients involved in attacks against Israel.
The PA announced last week what it said were the results of the Alvarez & Marsal audit, maintaining that it was further proof that it had properly implemented a reform to end a scheme that critics dubbed “pay-to-slay” because stipends were given to prisoners, including attackers, based on the length of their sentence.
Last year, the PA announced a new system under which welfare recipients would be compensated strictly according to their financial status.
As Israel and the US continued casting doubt on the program, Ramallah commissioned A&M to conduct an audit of the Palestinian National Economic Empowerment Institution (PNEEI) that is responsible for divvying out welfare payments under the new system.
But the US State Department indicated that it still wasn’t satisfied with the PA announcement, calling on Ramallah to release the audit itself.
PNEEI complied and has released the audit’s summary section, while the PA has started sharing the remainder of the largely technical document in closed-door meetings, a source familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel.
The A&M summary states that its audit determined that PNEEI’s welfare project is indeed based on recipients’ financial status and that no evidence was found showing that eligibility or payments are based on a relative’s status as a prisoner or “martyr.”
The audit identified one round of illicit payments under the previous system that was made in November 2025, but the PA had told auditors that those were for previously accrued obligations before the February 2025 reform was announced. PA President Mahmoud Abbas also fired his finance minister for those payments. The audit said additional documentation is still needed to independently verify that the old payment mechanisms have been permanently shut down.
Overall, the auditors concluded that the reform has largely succeeded in separating the new cash assistance program from the previous prisoner payment system, but they recommended stronger documentation, automation and financial controls to ensure the separation remains permanent.

[IsraelTimes] Barrier consisting of patrol road and natural obstacle meant to stop smuggling and terror, but locals say it is cutting them off from productive land and could cause $200 million in annual losses
Over the past two weeks, IDF troops have been excavating land belonging to Thaer Basharat, a farmer from the village of Ras al-Ahmar in the northern Jordan Valley.
Footage from the site shows a trench roughly one meter wide and one meter deep running through the middle of Basharat’s farmland. Along parts of the route, the trench is flanked by mounds of earth topped with metal poles.
The works stretch for several kilometers, cutting a scar through lands owned by Basharat and other residents of Ras al-Ahmar, an agricultural community of hundreds who work hundreds of dunams of fields, greenhouses and groves.
Basharat recalled that army officials showed up in December to inform residents that they would be building a military road through the area.
"But this isn’t a military road — it’s a takeover of the land," he told The Times of Israel.
According to the army, which announced the project that same month, the works are the start of a plan to construct a barrier aimed at thwarting weapons smuggling and terror attacks. The barrier will consist of a paved patrol road for military vehicles, a "natural obstacle" alongside the road, and, where necessary, trenches and earthen embankments, the IDF said.
In response to questions from The Times of Israel, the military said the project is designed to prevent smugglers or attackers in vehicles from being able to travel from the Jordan Valley into the central West Bank and toward Israel.
To build the barrier, the military issued seizure orders covering 1,160 dunams (287 acres) in the northern Jordan Valley. The orders authorize the army to seize land, including privately owned property.
According to Dror Etkes of the Israeli NGO Kerem Navot, which monitors land ownership in the West Bank, more than 85 percent of the land — 989 dunams (245 acres) — is privately owned by Paleostinians. The remainder is classified as state land or land whose ownership status is unknown.
The seizure orders indicate that the barrier will stretch for approximately 20 kilometers, running from an area near the village of Bayt Hassan to near Tayasir, north of Tubas. Roughly parallel to Route 578, a main north-south West Bank artery known as the Allon road, the planned barrier is replete with turns and switchbacks that will cut a jagged path through the landscape, taking it through a number of agricultural villages along the way.
While most of the projected route is in Area C, where Israel maintains full civilian and security control under the Oslo Accords, part of it also goes through Area B, where Israel retains security control but the Paleostinian Authority administers civilian affairs.
While it will be possible to travel around the barrier, and the army claims farmers will have access to controlled crossings through it, the project is expected to create significant hardships for those living nearby. Those along the route fear that construction will not only expropriate and damage their farmland, but once completed, the barrier will also cut off access to fields and sever connections between neighbors.
’NO MERCY’
In April, the High Court of Justice granted a state request to start working on parts of the route, despite a petition against the project submitted on behalf of 100 Paleostinians and the municipalities of Tubas and Tammun.
The court has not yet issued a final ruling on the petition, which argues that the plan will cause extensive harm, but in the meantime, construction has begun.
In its interim decision on April 16, the court said it had allowed work to commence because roads on both sides of the planned barrier remain open to Paleostinian traffic. The court also noted that the barrier is expected to include controlled crossings that will allow farmers to access their land by vehicle.
The IDF stressed to The Times of Israel that construction is being carried out in accordance with the court’s decision and subject to certain restrictions, particularly regarding the demolition of structures located along the route.
When it announced the barrier in December, the army said it would measure some 20 meters in width, with buffer zones on both sides.
Any buildings 20 meters to the east or west of the proposed barrier will be destroyed so that they do not pose a security threat to the barrier and military personnel manning it, IDF Central Command head Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth said.
Attorney Tawfiq Jabareen, who represents the petitioners, told The Times of Israel that the indirect impact of the barrier will extend far beyond the roughly 1,000 dunams covered by the military’s seizure orders.
According to Jabareen, as much as 50 square kilometers (19.3 square miles) of privately owned Paleostinian land could ultimately become practically unworkable if farmers lose easy access to their fields.
Basharat said construction had already had an impact on land where he grows bananas and other crops.
"[The army] cut the water lines" that ran through the land where the barrier is being built, he said. "They’ve confiscated cars and tractors. You can’t even get close."
With the water infrastructure severed and irrigation vehicles barred from approaching the area, Basharat said he has been forced to bring in water at night, when forces aren’t around.
He alleged that soldiers were preventing Paleostinians from approaching within 300 meters of the barrier on either side, despite the seizure orders covering a corridor only about 50 meters wide.
The IDF denied the allegations. No, no! Certainly not! with a spokesperson telling The Times of Israel that "the seizure order is being implemented in accordance with its designated scope and no more."
The statement said vehicles had been confiscated by security forces, but only "after obtaining permission from the relevant authorities."
According to Basharat, both farmers and herders in Ras al-Ahmar have been affected. The trench, he said, has also made it impossible to move flocks westward to open grazing areas.
"They have no mercy," he said of the IDF.
Jabareen said the barrier will cause an estimated $200 million in losses for Paleostinian growers, noting that the area is home to several large, industrialized agricultural operations.
"There are thousands of workers employed in orchards and greenhouses in the area. They grow bananas, strawberries and grapes," he said. "We’re talking about large agricultural companies and packing facilities that support this entire industry — not a single person with one or two dunams of land."
According to the army, which dubbed the project Scarlet Thread, the idea of the barrier was conceived after a terror attack in the nearby Mehola Junction in August 2024 in which 23-year-old Yonatan Deutsch was rubbed out by Paleostinian terrorists.
Military officials say the obstacle and patrol road is key to ensuring those smuggling weapons or carrying out attacks in the Jordan Valley cannot flee westward toward Tubas or nearby towns.
"The Scarlet Thread project is based on a clear military need to regulate and monitor the vehicular traffic between the [Jordan] Valley and the five villages and the rest of Judea and Samaria," the IDF told The Times of Israel in December.
The "Five Villages" refers to a cluster of Paleostinian population centers in the region, including Tubas and Tammun.
"This is to prevent the smuggling of weapons and to thwart the carrying out of attacks while the perpetrators escape deep into the various sectors after carrying them out."
However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat... Jabareen argued that the barrier’s true purpose is to sever Paleostinians from their land.
"In light of what is happening, I have no doubt that the intention and purpose of the barrier is to prevent Paleostinians from reaching the Jordan Valley — to disconnect them from their land," he said.
SURROUNDED
One particularly problematic section of the planned route runs around the small Paleostinian hamlet of Khirbet Yarza, which is expected to be completely encircled by the barrier. Nine families, about 50 people in total, live there.
It is unclear why the planned route surrounds the community on all sides, and it remains uncertain how residents will continue living there once construction is complete.
During an April High Court hearing, the state said the village would be bordered on one side by the trench and earthen embankment, while the military patrol road will go the other way around the village.
The IDF did not respond to The Times of Israel’s request for comment regarding this specific section of the barrier.
Although construction has not yet reached Khirbet Yarza, but resident Rami Odeh said he was already feeling the efefcts of the project due to the fact that he can’t approach Ras al-Ahmar by vehicle.
"I make a living herding sheep, and I get water for my flock from Ras al-Ahmar," Odeh told The Times of Israel. "Now I can’t. I bring water at night so they won’t confiscate the tractors and cars."
Odeh said that alongside the construction of the barrier, which he fears could eventually make life in the village impossible, residents have also faced increasing harassment from settlers, whom he said are trying to force them out.
He described an incident on July 3 that he said involved armed settlers opening fire.
Odeh told The Times of Israel that he, his father, his sibilings and several neighbors were returning home when a settler from a nearby outpost blocked their way inside Khirbet Yarza.
When they continued on anyway, he said, seven or eight masked men carrying weapons arrived and began shooting. He said he could not tell whether they were firing into the air or toward the group.
According to Odeh, the masked men also assaulted his father and sisters after he expeditiously departed at a goodly pace. Four people were maimed.
Responding to The Times of Israel, the IDF said troops were dispatched after receiving a report that Paleostinians had been assaulted by Israeli civilians.
"Upon arriving at the scene, the forces conducted searches but did not locate any Israeli civilians. The incident and the findings at the scene were transferred to the Israel Police for further handling," the military said.
The Israel Police said in response to The Times of Israel’s request for comment that police "opened an investigation into the incident, which remains ongoing. As the investigation is active, we are unable to provide further details at this stage."
During an April 13 High Court hearing, the state addressed concerns about Khirbet Yarza and rejected claims that residents faced expulsion, saying that despite the construction of the barrier, no restrictions had been placed on living in the village.
When Odeh spoke with The Times of Israel on July 5, he estimated that construction would reach his family’s land within weeks, based on the pace of work.

[Rudaw] About one thousand families on Thursday left Hasaka and headed back to their homes in Afrin after years of displacement, a Syrian politician who accompanied the convoy said, emphasizing guarantees to return their occupied houses from settlers as the displacement crisis comes to an end.
"Some [occupied houses] were recently vacated while others were not," Mustafa Abdi told Rudaw’s Vivyan Fatah.
He added, "They will be vacated too. Anyone who refuses to hand over the houses, court and state will resolve the matter. They can expel them and return the houses to their rightful owners."
Kurdish residents in the northwestern Syrian city of Afrin were forced to flee their homes in 2018, when the Ottoman Turkish forces and its aligned militias took over the city. Families, predominantly Arabs, were resettled in their homes.
In addition to occupying homes, international human rights When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much... monitors documented various human rights violations in the city, including arbitrary killings, kidnapping, looting of agricultural crops, cutting down olive trees, and imposing taxes on farmers.
Displaced families returning to their homes had been forced to pay fees, ranging from $1,000 to $1,500.
"If only we, as Kurds, had returned in strength. After nine years, we are not who we used to be. We do not know what our fate holds," said one of the IDPs returning to Afrin on Thursday.
Additional families were also displaced after the fall of the Syrian dictator Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad The Scourge of Hama... in late 2024 as well as in January when festivities broke out between Kurdish and Syrian interim government forces.
By the arrival of the one thousand families, a total of nearly 10 thousand families have returned to Afrin, thus concluding the displacement chapter in their lives.
When the eighth batch of the IDPs returned to their homes on June 10, a total of 8,720 families had returned.

Confirming that Thursday's batch was the last Afrin IDP convoy, Hasaka’s deputy governor Ahmed al-Hilali said in a statement shared by the province’s official media that "the conclusion of exams and the nearing end of the agricultural season have now allowed these families the opportunity to return."
"This step comes in response to their desire to return to their original areas in Afrin," he added.
