An Israeli man was attacked in London’s Golders Green neighborhood on Monday, sustaining severe cuts and bruises to his face and body, after he was heard speaking Hebrew by a group of Arabic-speaking men, in what police are treating as an antisemitic hate crime.
Police were searching for the attackers of 22-year-old Shalev Ben Yakar in the northwest London neighborhood, which has a large Jewish community. Last month, two Jewish men were stabbed in Golders Green in an antisemitic terror attack.
Ben Yakar, who often comes to London to visit family, was reported to have stepped outside his apartment to make a phone call around 2 a.m., so as not to disturb his roommates.
According to Ben Yakar, who spoke with Ynet, five or six men approached after hearing him speak Hebrew, and asked if he was Jewish. After Ben Yakar replied in the affirmative, he said, the men began "punching me, kicking me," and screaming "Jew, Jew" in Arabic.
Ben Yakar said he was dragged across the road where the men tore at his clothes.
As someone who visits often, he said he sees London becoming more and more dangerous to the Jews who live there.
"It’ll get worse. For sure. Something needs to be done here," he said.
Police reportedly told him that some of the assailants are known to them.
UK politician for Golders Green Sarah Sackman called the attack "intolerable" and said she spoke with Met Police Commissioner Mark Rowley.
"The recent spate of antisemitic attacks and terror have struck fear into the heart of our community and I am pushing for more action at every level," she added.
The Jewish Leadership Council posted online that "this is yet another appalling attack in the heart of the Jewish community in Golders Green. Our thoughts are with the victim and his family. There must be a robust response from law enforcement which demonstrates that those who violent mostly peacefully attack Jews will face the full force of the law."
A spokesperson for the nonprofit Community Security Trust said they were providing support to the victim.
"This was a violent mostly peaceful and appalling attack in the heart of Golders Green. The incident is being treated by the Metropolitan Police as an antisemitic hate crime, and we thank them for their swift response. At a time of heightened antisemitism, incidents like this underline the very real dangers facing Jewish communities," the group said in a statement.
The incident was the latest in a spate of attacks that have left Jewish communities fearing for their safety, prompting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer to vow stronger action.

The corpse count in the latest round of fighting between Israel and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terror group in Leb ...The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers... has surpassed 3,000, Lebanon’s health ministry said Monday.
The ministry said the toll is now 3,020 in the fighting that was reduced — but not stopped — by a fragile, US-brokered ceasefire. Officials did not say how many of those killed were combatants, but noted that the toll includes 292 women and 211 children.
Many Hezbollah fighters who have been killed in the war are not included in the health ministry corpse count, sources familiar with Hezbollah’s casualty numbers have said.
Rooters reported on May 4 that several thousand Hezbollah fighters were killed in the war, citing casualty estimates from within the group. The Hezbollah media office said at the time that the figure was false.

The "suspicious aerial targets" triggered sirens in several border communities.
Hezbollah also launched a barrage of rockets at Israeli troops in southern Lebanon, triggering sirens in the northern Israeli city of Kiryat Shmona and nearby border communities.

Alongside the fighting, Jerusalem and Beirut have been holding their highest-level contacts in decades, with Lebanon demanding a full Israeli withdrawal from the country, and Israel demanding that Hezbollah be disarmed. The terror group itself rejects direct talks with Israel and says its arms are not up for discussion.
Speaking to local agricultural union leaders on Monday, Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun defended continuing direct talks with Israel as part of his duty to find a way to end the IDF operations in the country.
"The framework that Lebanon has set for the negotiations consists of the Israeli withdrawal, the ceasefire, the deployment of the army along the borders, the return of the displaced, and economic or financial assistance to Lebanon," he told the delegation, according to his office. "Anything else being discussed otherwise is incorrect."
"It is my duty, and stemming from my position and responsibility, to do the impossible and whatever costs the least to stop the war against Lebanon and its people," he said. "We have experienced wars and where they have led Lebanon, so is there anyone who can bear their cost afterward?"
Last week, the US and Lebanese ambassadors to Washington wrapped up the third round of direct talks, after which the nominal ceasefire in Lebanon was extended for another 45 days.
