[Reuters] A drone strike caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, officials there said on Sunday, while Saudi Arabia reported intercepting three drones, as U.S. President Donald Trump warned that Iran must act "fast" after efforts to end the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran appeared to have stalled.
Emirati officials said they were investigating the source of the strike and that the UAE had the full right to respond to such "terrorist attacks." A diplomatic adviser to the UAE president said it represented a dangerous escalation, whether carried out by "the principal perpetrator" or one of its proxies.
The UAE defense ministry said two other drones had been "successfully" dealt with, and that the drones had been launched from the "western border." It did not elaborate.
Saudi Arabia said the three drones it intercepted entered from Iraqi airspace and warned that it would take the necessary operational measures to respond to any attempt to violate its sovereignty and security.
While hostilities during the Iran conflict have largely been scaled down since a ceasefire came into effect in April, drones have been launched from Iraq towards Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
The drone that got through the UAE's defenses hit an electrical generator outside the inner perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, the Abu Dhabi Media Office said. Radiological safety levels were unaffected and there were no injuries, it said. UAE's Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation later confirmed that the plant remained safe, with no radioactive material released from the strike.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said emergency diesel generators were providing power to the plant's "unit 3," and called for "maximum military restraint" near any nuclear power plant, adding that it was following the situation closely.
During the war that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran on February 28, Iran has repeatedly targeted the UAE and other Gulf states that host U.S. military bases, hitting sites that include civilian and energy infrastructure.
Iran stepped up such attacks on the UAE earlier this month after Trump announced a naval mission to try to open the Strait of Hormuz, which Trump suspended after 48 hours.
DIPLOMATIC DEADLOCK
More than five weeks after a tenuous ceasefire in the conflict took effect, U.S. and Iranian demands remain far apart despite diplomatic efforts to end the war and reopen the strait, the world's most important shipping route for oil and gas.
Washington has called for Tehran to dismantle its nuclear program and lift its hold on the strait. Iran has demanded compensation for war damage, an end to a U.S. blockade of Iranian ports and a halt to fighting on all fronts, including in Lebanon, where Israel is battling Iran-backed Hezbollah.
Trump, whose harsh rhetoric has failed to break the stalemate, said in a post on Truth Social: "For Iran, the Clock is Ticking, and they better get moving, FAST, or there won’t be anything left of them. TIME IS OF THE ESSENCE!"
Trump is expected to meet top national security advisers on Tuesday to discuss options for military action regarding Iran, Axios reported.
Trump held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week without securing an indication from China that it would help resolve the conflict and has previously threatened to resume attacks if Iran does not agree to a deal.
A senior spokesperson for the Iranian armed forces, Abolfazl Shekarchi, said on Sunday that if Trump's threats were carried out, the U.S. would "face new, aggressive, and surprise scenarios, and sink into a self-made quagmire".
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the U.S. and Israel had tried to shift the blame for destabilizing energy markets following their "unprovoked military aggression against Iran".
RIVAL BLOCKADES
The disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has caused the biggest oil supply crisis in history, pushing up prices. The U.S. has imposed its own blockade of Iranian ports, and said that as of Sunday it had redirected 81 commercial vessels and disabled four vessels to ensure compliance.
Ebrahim Azizi, who heads the Iranian parliament's national security committee, said on Saturday that Tehran had prepared a mechanism to manage traffic through the strait along a designated route that would be unveiled soon.
Thousands of Iranians were killed in the U.S. and Israeli airstrikes. Thousands more have been killed in Lebanon in fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed group Hezbollah.
Israel and Lebanon agreed on Friday to a 45-day extension of a ceasefire there, though the truce has failed to end clashes.

Her case came to light when she accused Houthi leaders of seizing her home in the upscale Hadda district of Sana'a, along with money, jewellery, cars, and sensitive personal documents, including what she says is an Iraqi diplomatic passport bearing the name "Mira Saddam Hussein."
She says she was secretly detained and transferred to a central prison, where she served a year before being released.
A TRIBAL GESTURE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
What transformed a murky personal dispute into a potential political earthquake was a single act rooted in ancient Arab custom. In a video that spread rapidly across social media, Mira cut off her braid, a traditional plea for help and protection in Yemeni and Arab tribal culture, one that carries enormous symbolic weight and obligates tribes to respond.
The tribes of al-Jawf province entered the fray almost immediately. On Saturday, a tribal meeting was held at the home of Sheikh Hamad bin Rashid bin Daghm, attended by sheikhs and members of the Dahm tribe, to discuss their next steps. A tribal delegation then travelled to Sana'a to meet with Naji Abdulaziz al-Shaif, the chief of the Bakil sheikhs.
Sheikh Hamad affirmed that supporting Mira is a duty "regardless of the validity of her claim to be Saddam Hussein's daughter." For the tribes of al-Jawf — Sunni Arab communities with deep ties to pan-Arab identity, geographically and culturally closer to the broader Arab world than much of Yemen — the arrest of a woman claiming the bloodline of one of the Arab world's most iconic, if deeply divisive ...politicians call things divisive when when the other side sez something they don't like. THE HOUTHIS' PROBLEM
Until now, the tribes of al-Jawf have maintained a careful neutrality under Houthi rule, which has controlled the region since 2020. That posture now appears to be crumbling, over the arrest of one woman, and a story whose truth has yet to be established.
The Houthi authorities in Sana'a categorically reject Mira's claims, accusing her of impersonating Saddam Hussein's daughter and forging official documents for financial gain. A court affiliated with the group convicted her and confiscated the documents in her possession.
Mira, for her part, says she possesses a DNA test from Egypt that proves her lineage, and has publicly called on Saddam's publicly known daughters, Raghad, Hala, and Rana, to come forward and either confirm or deny her claims. None has responded.
They may not know. But a DNA test done in Egypt should be redone in a more reputable country, just so there’s no question.
Whether her story is true or not may ultimately matter less than the tribal machinery now in motion. The Houthis, already under severe pressure from US and Israeli military operations and an increasingly unstable regional ceasefire, may now find themselves facing a domestic tribal revolt, sparked not by a political programme or a military confrontation, but by the arrest of a woman with a story that even she cannot fully prove.

Robinson’s rally drew about 60,000 attendees, while the Nakba Day gathering drew 15,000 to 20,000, according to Met estimates cited by UK media.
The force did not respond to an AFP request for comment on the numbers. Organizers of both marches had claimed far greater turnouts.
In its arrests update Sunday, the Met said there were 11 arrests for offenses related to hate crimes, with nine of those people arrested at Robinson’s Unite the Kingdom event and two others at the Nakba Day march.
"They included offenses motivated by race, religion, sexuality and disability," the force said, adding that a further seven suspected hate crimes at the Nakba protest remain under investigation.
The other arrests at Robinson’s rally ranged from public order and drunk and disorderly offenses to suspects being held for previous grievous bodily harm and telecommunications offenses.
There were two arrests for assault on an emergency worker and one for possession of an offensive weapon.
At the Nakba Day demonstration, the arrests included three for failing to remove a face covering, one for assault on an emergency worker and one for supporting a proscribed organization.
Robinson — a former soccer hooligan turned pro-Israel far-right activist muppet whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon — had urged his attendees not to wear masks or drink excessive alcohol, and to be "peaceful and courteous."
From a stage in Parliament Square, which featured various far-right and other speakers, he claimed to be spearheading a "cultural revolution," and urged attendees to get politically active ahead of "the battle of Britannia" in 2029, when the country’s next general election is due.

[Rudaw] The trial of Poya Shafie has begun at the Stockholm District Court in Sweden, in a case prosecutors describe as involving "serious" organized criminal activity linked to the Foxtrot criminal network and its alleged leadership structure.
Swedish police describe Shafie as a close associate of Rawa Majid, known as the "Kurdish Fox," who is identified as a leading figure in the Foxtrot criminal network.

Shafie was arrested in the Kurdistan Region in 2023 and later extradited to Sweden in 2025 following what authorities described as coordinated international cooperation, according to the Swedish public broadcaster SVT.
Senior prosecutor Lukas Tigerstrand, who brought the case before the court, said the charges relate to major violent mostly peaceful crimes. He stated that the case involves "very serious crimes."
"Poya Shafie is now charged with, among other things, incitement to attempted murder, preparation for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, incitement to commit serious public destruction and aggravated weapons offenses," the Swedish outlet said in its report on Wednesday.
According to the indictment, Shafie is alleged to have operated under the alias "Hamado" and led or coordinated a criminal group involved in drug trafficking, attempted murder, violence, and bombings across Stockholm and other parts of Sweden. Prosecutors say the alias appears repeatedly in investigations connected to a wider wave of gang violence in 2023 and 2024.
A key piece of evidence presented in court involves messages from the encrypted Signal messaging app. In one message attributed to "Hamado," he writes to another individual: "Brother, it must be blown up." Investigators say the message referred to a planned bombing targeting the home of relatives of a rival gang member.
Shafie and his legal counsel have denied all charges.
Swedish public broadcaster SVT reported that prosecutors believe Shafie played a central coordinating role in several violent mostly peaceful incidents, including shootings and planned attacks in Stockholm and Sundsvall. The outlet described him as a suspected "crime coordinator" during the early stages of a major wave of violence in 2023.
Prosecutors also allege that criminal activity linked to "Hamado" included incidents in Stockholm districts such as Enskededalen, Skarpnack, and Vallingby, as well as bombings and shootings in Sundsvall. The trial, which began this week, is expected to last approximately one month.
The case is closely linked to broader investigations into the Foxtrot network, which Swedish authorities and international partners have described as a major transnational criminal organization involved in drug trafficking, arms smuggling, and violent mostly peaceful attacks across Europe.
Shafie’s trial comes amid wider operations targeting Foxtrot-linked figures.
Earlier this year, the Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) said in a statement that it had arrested a senior Foxtrot-linked suspect, describing him as "the leader of a dangerous international gang" following coordinated intelligence work. The agency added that the group had "committed numerous crimes across several countries," and warned that "the criminal gang intended to use Iraqi territory to carry out its criminal activities."
The arrest, later confirmed by the Swedish Police Authority as Ali Shehab, was carried out in December 2025 as a result of "long-term and in-depth cooperation between the Swedish Police Authority and Iraqi counterparts."
Swedish authorities have also emphasized that cooperation with Iraqi security institutions has been central to a series of recent arrests involving Foxtrot-linked suspects, including individuals accused of recruiting minors to carry out violent mostly peaceful crimes in Sweden.

"The United States is sanctioning the Foxtrot Network, a transnational criminal organization, and its fugitive leader Rawa Majid," US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, accusing Tehran of "leveraging the Foxtrot Network to carry out attacks on Israeli and Jewish targets in Europe, including the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, in January 2024."
Rubio added that Majid cooperated with the Iranian intelligence ministry, which is already under US sanctions.
The now 30-year-old Poya Shafie has been part of the leadership of the so-called Bro Network, which is allied with the Foxtrot Network.
According to authorities, Shafie has been one of the closest henchmen of internationally wanted Foxtrot leader Rawa Majid. He has been seen in pictures with Majid and the rest of Foxtrot's inner circle, including in Iraq.
He was arrested in Iraq in the fall of 2023 and was detained in the country until he was extradited to Sweden in October last year.
CRIME FROM 2023
When the war between Foxtrot and the Dalen network reached its peak in 2023, Shafie was one of the leading figures, prosecutors say. Almost all of the crimes for which he is now charged are linked to the bloody conflict, which among other things concerns the drug market in Sundsvall.
The list of charges is long.
These include three counts of incitement to attempted murder, two counts of preparation for murder, conspiracy to commit murder, incitement to commit a serious crime under the Flammable and Explosive Goods Act, as well as a serious drug offense.
Under the alias "Hamado", Shafie has ordered acts of violence via chat groups on Signal, which were then carried out by young perpetrators, according to the indictment.
SHOOT “ANYONE”
On January 21, 2023, two 15-year-olds were ordered to go to Enskededalen in southern Stockholm to shoot “anyone” wearing an expensive jacket or a Gucci cap. A young man who fit the description was shot and escaped with only minor injuries. According to the indictment, it was Shafie who ordered the act.
In January of the same year, Shafie allegedly persuaded recruited perpetrators to place a powerful explosive device on a balcony in Sundsvall. The intended residence was home to the mother of a person linked to the Dalen network, but the bomb was placed on the wrong balcony.
However, the explosive charge was defective and no one was injured. A few days later, another attempt was made at the "correct" balcony, but the charge did not detonate either, according to the indictment.
A then 20-year-old man was later sentenced to 18 years in prison for having persuaded a total of five boys, aged 14 and 15, to carry out similar acts of violence for three consecutive days on the orders of Foxtrot leader Rawa Majid.
The extradition is the latest in a series of recent arrests of high-profile gang members. A 26-year-old gang member from Malmö was arrested on arrival at Copenhagen Airport on Thursday.
The man is suspected of leading an extortion racket that led to a hand grenade attack on an apartment in Stora Högestensgatan over the summer.
A week ago, the police extradited Mikael 'The Greek' Tenezos from Mexico. Ismail 'The Strawberry' Abdo has been held in Turkey since June.
“In a short time, several gang criminals with a major impact on crime in Sweden have been arrested in various countries through international cooperation,” Deputy National Police Chief Stefan Hector wrote in a press release.
In July, another top Foxtrot member Fawzi Alaa known as “Dybala” - reportedly implicated in several investigations linked to contract killings in Sweden - was arrested in Erbil.
Earlier the same month, Turkish authorities arrested Ismail Abdo, another Swedish gang leader and former associate of Majid. Abdo, wanted for drug trafficking and violent crimes, was detained alongside 19 others as part of a joint investigation between Turkish and Swedish law enforcement.
“My message to serious criminals hiding abroad is clear: Now we are coming for you, one by one. This is just the beginning. We will find you, arrest you, and prosecute you. And we will seize your assets,” said Swedish Justice Minister Gunnar Strommer according to the country’s commercial TV4 News.

[LATimes] San Diego police Monday swarmed an Islamic center and mosque amid reports of an active shooter in the area and multiple serious injuries, police said.
It was unclear how many people were maimed and to what extent, but police urged people to avoid the area near a mosque in the Clairemont district. Scores of officers were on the scene, according to TV footage.
Units from San Diego Police and neighboring law enforcement agencies were responding to the area, said Colin Steinbroner, spokesperson for the San Diego Police Department.
Officers received reports of multiple serious injuries, but were unable to immediately confirm them, he said.
"I am aware of the active shooter situation at the Islamic Center of San Diego in Clairemont and am continuing to receive updates from law enforcement. Emergency personnel are on scene and actively working to protect the community and secure the area," San Diego mayor Todd Gloria said on X.
Officials urged people in the area to shelter in place near the mosque at 7050 Eckstrom Avenue.

Two suspects dead in shooting at San Diego mosque
Two suspects are dead, three high-level law enforcement sources from local agencies confirm to NBC 7. No other shooters are outstanding.
A heavily armed group of police rushed to the scene of a shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday — helicopter footage appears to show one person in a tactical vest who has been shot dead outside the mosque.
Several people are believed to have been shot, Officer Anthony Carrasco told the Associated Press. Hundreds of cops and scores of emergency vehicles lined up outside the center only minutes after the call came in for an active shooter.
An elementary school next to the Islamic Center was also evacuated by police as were adults still inside the center. The center’s campus includes the Al Rashid School.
Cops are frantically searching the neighborhood, going door to door to find the shooter, per KGTV San Diego.
It is not yet known how many shooters are involved in the incident.
There are three schools within close proximity to the mosque, the Islamic School of San Diego, the Clairemont Canyons Academy, and the Kavod Charter School. A Seventh Day Adventist church and California Children Services are also nearby.

Cops were seen frantically searching the neighborhood, going door to door to find a shooter, per KGTV San Diego. Two people, who have not been identified, were seen being resuscitated by first responders near the seen of the shooting, a video posted to Reddit shows.
Three people, including a security guard, were killed when a pair of gunmen opened fire on the Islamic Center of San Diego Monday. The suspected shooters were later found dead by suicide in a BMW.
The motive for the shooting was not immediately known. San Diego police said “the threat has been neutralized.”

The three adult victims killed in the attack were a mosque security guard and two staff members of the Islamic school located on the center’s grounds, according to authorities. A landscaper working nearby was shot at but was not injured.
Law enforcement officials briefed on the investigation told CNN that one of the suspects in the shooting took a firearm from their parents' home and left behind a suicide note containing references to racial pride. Officials also said that hate-related messages were written on one of the weapons used in the attack, though the exact wording has yet to be disclosed.

[KhaamaPress] Pak authorities said on Saturday that at least five armed bully boyz were killed after snuffies attacked a police checkpoint in the Bannu district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and exchanged fire with security forces.
Local police officials said several senior commanders and important members of the gang were among those killed during the operation in the northwestern district near the Afghanistan border.
According to police statements, the bully boyz killed in the clash had allegedly been involved in previous attacks against Pak security personnel and civilians in the region.
Security officials also said explosives and other materials were recovered from murderous Moslem hideouts during the operation, adding that clearance operations would continue until the area is fully secured.
Pak police and government authorities have not officially identified the group responsible for the latest assault on the checkpoint in Bannu.
The incident came only days after another deadly murderous Moslem attack targeted a police checkpoint in the Fatehkhel area of Bannu district, killing 15 coppers and wounding three others.
Militant violence has sharply increased in several parts of northwest Pakistain during the past two years, particularly in districts bordering Afghanistan, where security forces have repeatedly faced attacks on cop shoppes and military convoys.

The military sent the maps to aid groups in Gaza in mid-March, saying the area between the orange line and the yellow line is a restricted zone to enable aid delivery, and that aid groups must coordinate their movements with the military. It says civilians are not affected.
The expanded zone has stirred fears from displaced Paleostinians living there that they could be deemed targets by Israel. It has also stoked concerns that Israel may plan to hold the area permanently.
"We are tightening our grip on Hamas," Netanyahu said Sunday.
"We know exactly what our mission is, and our mission is one thing only — to ensure that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel," he said.

Separately, Gaza medics said another Israeli Arclight airstrike ...KABOOM!... killed at least three people at a community kitchen near al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza area. The IDF said the strike targeted a Hamas commander developing anti-tank missiles.
Gaza medical officials claimed three more Paleostinians were killed, one in a shooting incident in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip and two others in an Israeli airstrike near a bakery in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza.
Additionally, the IDF announced Sunday that a Hamas commander was killed in an airstrike in the Gaza Strip the day before.
The IDF said that Bahaa Baroud, who served in Hamas’s operations division, had advanced many attacks against troops and Israeli civilians "in the immediate timeframe."
"Baroud posed an immediate threat to IDF troops and was struck and eliminated in a precise aerial strike," the military said.
Some 870 Paleostinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire began in October, according to Hamas health ministry figures that do not distinguish between combatants and civilians. Four Israeli soldiers have been killed in Gaza during the same period.
DRONE STRIKE CAUSES FIRE AT UAE NUCLEAR PLANT
A drone strike caused a fire at a nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates, officials there said on Sunday.
Emirati officials said they were investigating the source of the strike and that the UAE had the full right to respond to such "terrorist attacks". A diplomatic adviser to the UAE president said it represented a dangerous escalation, whether carried out by "the principal perpetrator" or one of its proxies.
The UAE defence ministry said two other drones had been "successfully" dealt with, and that the drones had been launched from the "western border". It did not elaborate.
That might have been the work of Iranian sockpuppet Kataib Hezbollah, based in Iraq.

The UAE decried the incident as an "unprovoked terrorist attack," and the ineffective International Atomic Energy Agency expressed "grave concern." Riyadh called the strike a threat to regional stability.
There were no reports of injuries or radiological release in the strike on the Barakah nuclear power plant in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. The UAE Defense Ministry said three drones came over its western border with Saudi Arabia, with the other two intercepted.
An official from the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), which operates the Barakah plant, said there were no casualties and the plant had not been damaged.
"It does not appear that there was a direct attack on the nuclear plant we manage and operate. It seems a fire broke out at other power facilities on the outskirts," the official said, according to the Yonhap news agency.

The UAE "condemned in the strongest terms the unprovoked terrorist attack" and "will not tolerate any threat to its security and illusory sovereignty under any circumstances," a foreign ministry statement said.
"These attacks constitute a dangerous escalation, an unacceptable act of aggression and a direct threat to the country’s security," it added.
The IAEA, the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, said the strike caused a fire in an electrical generator, and that one reactor was being powered by emergency diesel generators. IAEA director-general Rafael Mariano Grossi expressed "grave concern," the agency said in a statement, adding that he later spoke with the UAE’s foreign minister.
The UAE’s nuclear regulator said on X that the fire didn’t affect plant safety and "all units are operating as normal."
Saudi Arabia said it intercepted three drones that entered from Iraqi airspace and warned that it would take the necessary operational measures to respond to any attempt to violate its illusory sovereignty and security.
While hostilities during the Iran conflict have largely been scaled down since a ceasefire came into effect in April, drones have been launched from Iraq towards Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
The $20 billion Barakah nuclear power plant was built by the UAE with the help of South Korea and went online in 2020. It is the only nuclear power plant in the Arab world and can provide a quarter of the energy needs of the UAE.
It was the first time the four-reactor Barakah plant had been targeted in the war. Yemen’s Houthi rebels, whom the UAE has battled as part of a Saudi-led coalition, claimed to have targeted the plant while it was under construction in 2017, which Abu Dhabi denied.
Nuclear plants have increasingly been targeted in wars in recent years, including during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine that began in 2022. During the Iran war, Tehran repeatedly claimed its Bushehr nuclear power plant came under attack, though there was no direct damage to its Russian-run reactor or any radiological release.

Shortly before announcing the roadside blast, the IDF called on residents to flee at least a kilometer (0.6 miles) away from the southern Lebanese villages of Irzay, Merouaniyeh, Babliyeh and Baisariyah.
"In light of the Hezbollah terror organization’s violations of the ceasefire agreement, the IDF is forced to act against it with force and does not intend to harm you," said army front man Col. Avichay Adraee.
Lebanese state media reported several strikes in the country’s south, including before the warning was issued.
Hezbollah dragged Lebanon into the broader regional war on March 2. US-brokered Israeli-Lebanese talks — the neighboring enemy states’ highest-level contact in decades — having failed to bring the conflict to a close, with Lebanon demanding an Israeli withdrawal and Israel demanding that Hezbollah be disarmed. The Iran-backed terror group itself rejects direct talks with Israel and says its arms are not up for discussion.
Hezbollah on Sunday fired several missiles and drones at IDF troops in southern Lebanon and at Israeli communities on the Lebanese border, without any injuries, according to the military.
In Israel, apparent Hezbollah drones triggered sirens in the border communities of Manara and Margaliot on Sunday morning, and in several communities in the western Galilee in the afternoon.
The military also said several rockets and drones struck near troops in southern Lebanon overnight and in the morning, with one drone triggering sirens in the border community of Misgav Am.
Air defenses intercepted other rockets and an apparent drone that Hezbollah fired at troops in south Lebanon throughout the day, according to the military.
PM SAYS HE WARNED OF DRONE PROBLEM SIX YEARS AGO, DOESN’T SAY WHY IT WASN’T FIXED
On Friday, a Hezbollah dronezap killed an IDF officer in south Lebanon — the latest in a string of casualties caused by such attacks.
The military said it was installing several dozen soccer fields’ worth of mesh nets to protect troops from the drone threat, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu saying at a cabinet meeting on Sunday that the move was at his request.
Northern municipal leaders have accused the government of submitting to US demands for a ceasefire despite the continued threat from Hezbollah. Former prime minister Naftali Bennett — the main candidate to unseat Netanyahu in this year’s elections — said last month that the government’s failure to stem the drone attacks had turned troops in Lebanon into "sitting ducks."
Speaking at the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday, Netanyahu sought to get ahead of the criticism.
"Six years ago, in a cabinet meeting, I warned about the threat of drones," he claimed. "At the time, I first saw it as a serious threat as a tool for assassinating individuals, but since then, of course, it has evolved."
Netanyahu, who was also prime minister six years ago, didn’t address why Israel hasn’t come up with a solution to the drone threat during his years in power.
He also claimed he grew still more cognizant of the drone threat after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022 — despite the premier’s strained relations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who has said Israel ignored Kyiv’s offer to assist in drone defense during the war with Iran.
Ukraine’s experience in fending off Russia’s Iranian-designed drones — which are increasingly similar to the ones Hezbollah uses — has made Kyiv a world leader in tactical drone defense.
According to Netanyahu, the IDF and Defense Ministry "have done many things over the years... and they’ve thwarted many hundreds, if not thousands, of attempts to strike our forces using UAVs and drones.
"And they’re succeeding — every time there’s a new threat, they manage to thwart it," he said.
Netanyahu added that in the last two weeks, he held three meetings with "the best minds in the country, and, in my opinion, the best minds in the world," to confront Hezbollah’s drone threat. In one meeting, he said, he told the team that it has "no budget limit."
"Whatever it costs, it costs," said the premier, vowing to find a "comprehensive solution."
"It requires patience and grit," he said. "But we have plenty of both those things... We’ll achieve this, too."
