Tennessee State Representative Justin Pearson (D-Memphis) was accused of using “race baiting” in his campaign advertisement announcing the relaunch of his campaign for the Democratic nomination for the 9th Congressional District, where first launched his campaign to unseat U.S. Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN-09) before the Governor Bill Lee signed the newly redrawn districts into law.
As part of the redistricting legislation, candidates must refile or file a notice that they no longer intend to run by Friday. In his video, Pearson confirmed he intends to run in the same district, despite most analysts saying it now leans overwhelmingly Republican.
“Today, we re-launch our campaign to take on billionaires and the political status quo. Whether you live in the new TN-09, the old TN-09, or anywhere that our systems have failed you, I’m running for Congress for all of US,” wrote Pearson in a post to social media.
Pearson described the redistricting as “immoral and wrong” in his advertisement, before claiming Tennessee’s redrawn congressional districts, “are racist tools of white supremacy,” enacted “at the behest of the most white supremacist in the United States of America, Donald J. Trump.”
The Democratic lawmaker compared congressional redistricting to slavery, lynchings, and institutionalized racism.
“This nation, this state has legislated and legalized the worst things in humanity, including our enslavement,” said Pearson. He later continued, “I want my nephews, sons, and the future to know, no matter what you do, no matter how much you try and break us, and make us bend, and make us quit, we will still be here.”
