[IsraelTimes] A soldier stationed at Fort Polk in Louisiana was arrested last week after he told users on the popular messaging platform Discord that he planned to conduct a mass shooting at a synagogue.
Jakob Marcoulier, 22, was arrested last Thursday and charged with transmitting a threat in interstate commerce after the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center received a tip in February that he had made threats toward synagogues, according to the US attorney’s office for the western district of Louisiana.
According to court documents, the FBI obtained audio from Discord in which Marcoulier allegedly said, "After this deployment if the Jews still have reign over our government, I am going to walk into a synagogue with my AK, with a 75-round drum mag, and all of my extra mags, with my level four plates, and my haka helmet that’s three plus, and I am going to kill every single Jew I know inside of that synagogue. And that’s my goal in life."
During the communications, Marcoulier told the other users, "You guys will never do anything about but I will. I just have to finish this, I have to go back overseas and do what I have to do. And then you’ll see me in the news. I promise you."
He also allegedly said that he would "kill these motherf—kers in order to make sure the white youth is f—king secured."
It was not immediately clear when Marcoulier made the comments, but the United States and Israel jointly attacked Iran on Feb. 28 following a buildup of US troops in the Middle East.
The Iran war has put Jewish institutions across the country and the around the world on high alert, with attacks on synagogues including arsons in Europe and a synagogue ramming in suburban Detroit last month.
“Threats against synagogues and Jewish Americans are threats to the religious freedom promised to every single one of us, and this Office and our law enforcement partners are committed to protecting those freedoms,” United States Attorney Zachary A. Keller said in a statement.
Marcoulier faces up to 5 years in federal prison for the charge.
According to court documents, FBI’s National Threat Operations Center received an online tip in February 2026 about a Discord user named “el.bostino” who had made threats toward synagogues. FBI secured recorded audio from Discord in which the individual, later determined to be Marcoulier, made these threats.
The FBI investigated this case alongside the Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division (DACID). It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lauren Nickel with assistance from Legal Assistant Christy Angelle.

I haven’t been able to find anything about Mr. Marcoulier, including his rank and resumé, though there are now two or three photos of his, attached to articles. But USA Today discusses the fact that Discord has a history of hosting this kind of conversation:
Discord is an online messaging platform where users can communicate directly with one another, either by text or in voice calls. The platform became immensely popular with gamers and was originally developed to help people who play multiplayer games to communicate.
The platform has more than 90 million daily active users, according to the company's website. Though Discord was designed as a communications platform and has been primarily aimed at gamers, researchers with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue have documented that the platform has been "repeatedly used by various extremist groups."
In a 2021 report, the Institute for Strategic Dialogue − an independent research organization that analyzes extremism, disinformation, and online threats − found that Discord "primarily acts as a hub for extreme right-wing socializing and community building" and "provides a safe space for users to share ideological material and explore extremist movements."
In recent years, Discord has also been under scrutiny on suspicion of facilitating child sexual exploitation and abuse, and for being linked to high-profile mass shootings. Multiple high-profile incidents of violence and extremism that have involved Discord include:
Unite the Right at Charlottesville, Virginia: Far-right extremists used the platform to communicate and organize before the rally, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Authorities said hundreds of Ku Klux Klan members, neo-Nazis and other White nationalists marched through the University of Virginia campus in 2017, shouting racist and antisemitic chants.
Mass shooting in Buffalo, New York: Authorities said the gunman [Payton Gendron] who shot and killed 10 people in a Buffalo supermarket in 2022 had invited Discord users into his private server to read the private writings he had posted on the platform for months. The writings included racist rants and step-by-step attack plans, USA TODAY reported.
Ohio synagogue threat: In 2023, authorities accused a 13-year-old boy [unnamed because of his youth, but the synagogue was Temple Israel] of planning to carry out a mass shooting at a synagogue in Canton and had conspired with another person through Discord.
Charlie Kirk shooting: After the fatal shooting of the conservative activist in 2025, authorities said the suspect [Tyler Robinson] sent messages on Discord that contained references to a rifle that needed to be retrieved and engravings on bullet casings found with the weapon.
Discord told USA TODAY it has a "zero-tolerance policy against hate or violent extremism and we take action when we become aware of it, including banning users, shutting down servers, and engaging with authorities when appropriate." In 2021, the company said it had banned more than 2,000 extremist servers, according to the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

The Iowa Republican told Newsmax's "Wake Up America" that she uncovered the payments as part of her broader push to investigate alleged fraud tied to COVID-19 relief programs and recover taxpayer money.
"This is not an uplifting story," Ernst said. "I uncovered that the Biden administration had given Planned Parenthood affiliates through the Paycheck Protection Program over $90 million, forgave those loans, even though they were ineligible."
Ernst also said officials attempted to conceal the payments by using misleading terminology in records.
"Even worse than that, they tried to obscure the fact that they had done this illegally by using the code word Benghazi," she said. "What does Benghazi have to do with Planned Parenthood? Absolutely nothing."
Ernst said she is backing the Small Business Administration Fraud Enforcement Extension Act, which would give federal investigators more time to pursue pandemic-related fraud cases.
"The time to go after those fraudsters is running out," she said. "We want to allow additional time for the Department of Justice to do their investigations, to go after the fraudsters, and reclaim the American taxpayer money that went out the door fraudulently."
Ernst said the measure has full Republican support and some backing from Democrats, though she called for broader bipartisan cooperation.
