[Daily Wire] Former President Barack Obama commented Sunday on the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump and administration officials at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner and claimed that it was unclear why the gunman opened fire at the event.
Obama addressed the shooting in a social media post hours after reports shed light on the gunman’s plan and reason for targeting Trump at the dinner. When Obama condemned the attack, however, he claimed that "details about the motives" remained a mystery.
"Although we don’t yet have the details about the motives behind last night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner, it’s incumbent upon all us to reject the idea that violence has any place in our democracy," Obama wrote. "It’s also a sobering reminder of the courage and sacrifice that U.S. Secret Service Agents show every day. I’m grateful to them — and thankful that the agent who was shot is going to be okay."
The shooter, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen of California, laid out his plan and defended his violence in a 1,000-word document that he posted minutes before his attack. In the manifesto, Allen referred to Trump as a "pedophile, rapist, and traitor" and called himself the "Friendly Federal Assassin." Allen wrote that his goal was to murder Trump administration officials at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, targeting them from "highest-ranking to lowest," excluding FBI Director Kash Patel for unknown reasons.
After the shooting, Republicans — including President Donald Trump — urged Democrats to tone down their political rhetoric and "resolve our differences."
"I do think that the hate speech of the Democrats ... is very dangerous," Trump told CBS News during a "60 Minutes" interview on Sunday.
It appears that Allen bought into many leftist talking points regarding President Trump and his administration’s policies. Allen latched onto conspiracy theories about Trump’s involvement with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and condemned U.S. military strikes on suspected drug runners in the Caribbean, calling them "fisherman executed without trial."
Allen, who described himself as a Christian, argued that his faith required him to turn to violence for the sake of people who are being "oppressed." In his manifesto, Allen sought to reconcile his faith with his heinous plan.
"Turning the other cheek is for when you yourself are oppressed. Turning the other cheek when someone else is oppressed is not Christian behavior; it is complicity in the oppressor’s crimes," Allen wrote.
While the gunman claimed that he intended to "minimize casualties" of event attendees, he wrote that he was willing to open fire on anyone in the ballroom.
"I would still go through most everyone here to get to the targets if it were absolutely necessary (on the basis that most people *chose* to attend a speech by a pedophile, rapist, and traitor, and are thus complicit) but I really hope it doesn’t come to that," he wrote in the manifesto.
Allen was taken down by Secret Service agents at the Washington Hilton before he made it to the ballroom. One Secret Service agent was shot by the gunman, but his bulletproof vest stopped the bullet.

Chungag is "greatly dismayed by these charges and looks forward to a timely and just resolution of the matter," defense attorney Robert Jenkins told The Associated Press in an email Friday.
Chungag, a 50-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen, and co-defendant Mercy Akwi Ombaku were arrested Monday on federal conspiracy charges. A magistrate judge ordered their release from custody after initial court appearances in Alexandria, Virginia. Prosecutors didn’t seek their pretrial detention.
In 2020, Chungag was stationed at Fort Meade in Maryland when he first expressed interest in assisting members of the ADF, according to the FBI affidavit. In online chats with ADF members in Cameroon, Chungag falsely claimed to have combat experience in Iraq but appeared to be embellishing his military background to raise his profile in the group, the affidavit says.
Chungag is accused of plotting with Ombaku, a Maryland resident, to transfer money from the U.S. to Cameroon for the purchase of AK-47 assault rifles. Investigators believe Chungag grew disillusioned and withdrew from the organization in 2024. Later that year, FBI agents questioned him about his ADF-related activities. Investigators believe he tried to destroy incriminating evidence by deleting ADF-related messages from his phone after the FBI contacted him.
Cameroon, with a population of roughly 31 million, has been ruled by Paul Biya since 1982, making him one of Africa’s longest-serving rulers. The ADF is a separatist military organization in southern Cameroon fighting for the Anglophone region to break away from the central African country.
The separatist movement dates back to the early 1960s, when the British Southern Cameroons, a United Nations trust territory previously governed as part of Nigeria’s eastern region, was joined with Cameroon. In 2017, English-speaking separatists launched a rebellion aimed at establishing an independent state. The conflict has killed at least 6,500 people and displaced over 600,000 others, according to the Belgium-based International Crisis Group.
Pope Leo XIV on his recent Africa trip, presided over a peace meeting last Thursday with community leaders in one of the two Anglophone regions. During the pope’s visit, separatist groups announced a three-day pause in fighting.
Chungag has worked as a nurse at a Fort Belvoir community hospital, according to a base spokesperson. The spokesperson referred questions about Chungag’s employment status to the medical center, which didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Ombaku, a healthcare worker who is also a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Cameroon, is charged with conspiring with Chungag to financially support the ADF. She denied having any ADF affiliation when the FBI questioned her last July. An attorney for Ombaku, 38, of New Carrollton, Maryland, didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Fort Belvoir is located about 20 miles (32 kilometers) south of Washington along the Potomac River.

A New York woman was convicted after authorities said she threw a handmade stick of dynamite at her boyfriend while he was sleeping, causing his hand to be blown off as he attempted to get rid of the explosive.
Keyonna Waddell, 35, of Deer Park on Long Island, was found guilty by a jury on Friday of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal possession of a weapon in connection with the March 2024 incident.
Waddell had threatened the victim with dynamite several times in the months leading up to the incident, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
"Domestic violence can escalate to deadly levels, and this case is a sobering reminder of that reality," Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond Tierney said in a statement.
On March 22, 2024, Waddell and her boyfriend were involved in an argument inside his apartment, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.
After the dispute, the man left the apartment and told Waddell to leave. When he arrived back home, Waddell did not appear to be there, and he went to sleep.
He was later woken up by a hissing sound and noticed a flame on the floor of his bedroom. He then realized that a stick of dynamite had been thrown into his bedroom and attempted to toss the explosive device out of the window, but it detonated and blew off most of his hand before he was able to throw it out of harm's way.
The victim then ran out of his home to the driveway, at which point he saw Waddell running away.
He was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where the remainder of his hand and part of his arm were amputated.
Waddell was arrested the following day, officials said. Her sentencing is scheduled for May 27, and she could face up to 25 years in prison.

Fox News Digital Senior Investigations Editor Asra Nomani said the suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting was shaped by years of ideological influence, arguing the attack reflects a broader pattern of radicalization rather than an isolated act.

Avriana Allen said that her brother would regularly go to the shooting range to train with his firearms, adding that he was a member of a group called “The Wide Awakes” and that he had attended a “No Kings” protest in California at some point.
