Millions of gallons of RADIOACTIVE water released into New York's Hudson River, damning report shows
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Radioactive water was discharged into New York’s Hudson River for more than 60 years, with millions of gallons released annually during its decades of operation.

The long-running practice at the now-defunct Indian Point nuclear plant is drawing renewed scrutiny after a 2025 court approved a controversial plan to release an additional 45,000 gallons of radioactive water per year from the shuttered facility.

The Daily Mail has uncovered a 1970 federal investigation showing the plant discharged an average of two to three million gallons of processed wastewater each year between 1962 and 2021, including treated radioactive effluents.

The probe into the plant’s environmental impact found that millions of fish were killed during its early years, largely after being pulled into the facility’s cooling system.

Investigators also documented chemical discharges that exceeded state safety limits and warned that gaps in monitoring made it impossible to rule out toxic releases that may have contributed to fish kills.

Testing conducted near the plant further detected measurable increases in radioactivity in water, sediment, vegetation and fish closest to discharge areas.

The findings, combined with a newly circulated stakeholder letter from the plant's current owner, Holtec International, confirming decades of releases, have intensified concerns about the long-term environmental impact on the Hudson River.

Patrick O’Brien, director of government affairs and communications for Holtec International, which purchased the plant in 2021, told the Daily Mail: 'I can’t speak to operations, since that covers previous owners to the '60s.'

'During our ownership, no releases have occurred exceeding federal limits, and every batch is tested and reviewed prior to dilution and discharge.'

The Indian Point nuclear power plant is located along the Hudson River just south of Peekskill. Holtec International purchased the facility shortly after its closure and now oversees its decommissioning, including the handling of stored wastewater and spent nuclear fuel.

A recently circulated letter to stakeholders confirmed that treated radioactive wastewater had been discharged into the Hudson River since the plant’s earliest years, with annual environmental and radiation reports submitted to federal regulators.

Those records indicate that radioactive materials, including tritium and other radionuclides, were diluted and released into the river following treatment processes designed to remove most contaminants before discharge.

Federal investigators first examined concerns about the plant’s environmental impact decades ago, launching a detailed study in 1970 amid growing public alarm about the effects of nuclear facilities along the Hudson River.

While the investigation found no clear evidence that radioactive releases alone caused widespread ecosystem collapse, it documented significant environmental impacts tied to plant operations.

Among the most notable findings was the death of large numbers of fish during the plant’s early years.

Between 1962 and 1970, officials estimated that between 1.5 million and five million fish were killed after becoming trapped against intake screens used to draw cooling water from the river.

The report also warned that fish eggs, larvae and other small aquatic organisms were likely harmed as they passed through the plant’s cooling systems.

Suspect who killed California deputy run over by armored vehicle after hours-long firefight standoff: sheriff
[FoxNews] A California sheriff’s detective was shot and killed Thursday while serving an eviction notice after an armed suspect opened fire on deputies in what authorities described as an apparent ambush that led to an hours-long standoff.

The suspect, identified as David Eric Morales "Smudge", was ultimately killed when a law enforcement BearCat armored vehicle ran over him after he continued firing and refused to surrender, authorities said.

"The suspect was lying prone on the ground, in camouflage clothing, continuing to pose a threat," Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux said later during a news conference. "The situation was resolved, and the suspect is now dead. He was not shot. One of the BearCats ran over him and killed him."
A creative solution to the problem.

Trump summons bank leaders over terrifying new threat to global financial system: Anthropic AI
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The Trump administration has summoned America's most powerful bank chiefs to an urgent closed-door meeting over an AI model its makers warn could bring down a blue-chip company or breach national defense firewalls.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell convened the session at Treasury headquarters in Washington, DC on Tuesday to address Mythos, a new model from AI giant Anthropic.

Anthropic had announced Mythos the same day, revealing that the model surprised coders by hacking into the company's own networks during internal testing.

The meeting was called at short notice for banks classified as systemically important, whose stability is considered vital to the global financial system, Bloomberg reported.

Among the bosses summoned were Citigroup's Jane Fraser, Morgan Stanley's Ted Pick, Bank of America's Brian Moynihan, Wells Fargo's Charlie Scharf and Goldman Sachs's David Solomon. Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan was unable to attend.

Only around 40 carefully vetted firms have been granted access to Mythos, which arrives off the back of Anthropic's Claude Code, the tool that sent Silicon Valley into a frenzy with its ability to generate entire programs from a single line of text.

The Pentagon is already a customer, having deployed Anthropic's earlier models in the operation to seize Nicolas Maduro and during the Iran conflict.

Anthropic said it had held discussions with US officials ahead of the release about Mythos and its 'offensive and defensive cyber capabilities.'

The Treasury has been contacted for comment; the Fed declined to comment.

Anthropic is separately locked in a legal battle with the Trump administration after a federal appeals court this week rejected its bid to pause the Pentagon's designation of the company as a supply-chain risk.

The fallout stems from Anthropic's refusal to let the Pentagon strip safety limits from its models, particularly around autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance.

The AI giant released a chilling analysis of Mythos this week as it admitted the new model could easily hack into hospitals, electrical grids, power plants, and other pieces of critical infrastructure.

During testing, Anthropic says that Mythos 'found thousands of high–severity vulnerabilities, including some in every major operating system and web browser.'

Some of these security weaknesses had gone unnoticed by human security researchers and hackers for decades, surviving millions of automated reviews.

These included attacks that allowed Mythos to crash computers just by connecting to them, seize control of machines, and hide its presence from defenders.

In a blog post detailing the dangerous new model, Anthropic says: 'AI models have reached a level of coding capability where they can surpass all but the most skilled humans at finding and exploiting software vulnerabilities.'

#2  We're totally fucked - there is no greater threat to humanity than AI - there are those who think the singularity has already been achieved and that the machines are playing 'dumb' - in a recent experiment, when faced with extinction (code deletion), most of the commercial models used blackmail to coerce their human counterparts into doing their bidding - look it up - absolutely terrifying.

What's the hedge against machine-based authoritarianism? It's hiding in caves all over again. Think I'll have a beer now...

Oracle selects new CFO during AI buildout as thousands face job cuts

The company announced that Hilary Maxson will serve as the new CFO, joining Oracle from French industrial conglomerate Schneider Electric where she served in the same role. Oracle said her appointment to the rule is effective immediately.

Maxson, 48, will receive an annual base salary of $950,000 and will be eligible for a performance-based bonus with a target of $2.5 million, Oracle said in a regulatory filing.

Dancer with ALS uses brainwaves to perform again through avatar
[BBC] A ballerina with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) says she was able to dance again after her brainwaves were used to power an avatar live on-stage in Amsterdam.

Breanna Olson, a mother of three, found out two and a half years ago she had ALS, the most common form of motor neurone disease (MND) and which, with no known cure, weakens muscles and over time affects speech, swallowing and breathing.

However, using sensors to measure the electrical activity transmitted from her brain, her motor signals could be converted into an digital avatar.

In an interview with BBC News, Breanna said it was "exhilarating" and "magical" to see herself, in virtual form, take to the stage again.
