[IsraelTimes] Suspects attacked Jew in Pittsburgh in 2024, corroborated their stories, misled grand jury and investigators, complaint says
US federal authorities on Monday announced charges against six Pennsylvania men for attacking a Jewish man and conspiring to hide their involvement and mislead Sherlocks.
The case stood out because the investigation gave a rare look at how alleged antisemitic assailants discussed their crime behind the scenes, hid their anti-Jewish animus, and conflated Jews and Israel.
The charges stem from a late-night incident in September 2024, when five of the defendants made antisemitic comments, including "Fuck the Jews" and "Fuck Israel," to a Jewish passerby in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh, the criminal complaint said.
The man was identifiably Jewish because he was wearing a Star of David pendant outside his shirt, the US Department of Justice said.
The victim stopped to confront the defendants, who made further antisemitic comments, such as "I hate Jews and I hate Israel," told the victim that he should not be wearing a Star of David, and showed him some of their own necklaces that had Arabic script.
The verbal dispute escalated and two of the defendants, Muhammed Koc, 27, and Omar Alshmari, 28, punched and kicked the victim, splitting his lip and causing other minor injuries.
The other defendants who were at the scene were Abraham Choudhry, 22, Emirhan Arslan, 24, and Ali Alkhaleel, 19. A sixth defendant, Adeel Piracha, 22, was involved in the cover-up, but was not at the scene. All are residents of the Pittsburgh region.
After the attack, the victim reported the incident to law enforcement and the FBI opened an investigation.
Security cameras recorded part of the incident, and the University of Pittsburgh issued an alert seeking the suspects.
The defendants saw that law enforcement was searching for them, and, over the course of several months, conspired to hide evidence of their involvement in a group chat called "No saving for the love of God" with the other defendants on the social media platform Snapchat.
In the chat, Koc and Alshmari told other defendants in the case that they were the suspects, describing the victim as "the white boy who had the israel chain."
Alshmari admitted to the attack in other text messages to unnamed defendants, calling the victim a "fucking yahoodi," using the Arabic term for Jew, and using other slurs.

Months later, in January 2025, FBI agents interviewed Koc about the attack. Koc denied being in the area, but after being presented with footage showing him there, he admitted to being present. He falsely said that the victim initiated the attack and that he did not know the victim was Jewish, the criminal complaint said.
Over the next three months, the defendants conspired to align their testimony about the attack in group chats, video calls and text messages, warned each other against discussing the incident on non-encrypted messaging platforms, tried to learn what information Sherlocks had, and lied to the grand jury.
Piracha said, "I’ve been subpoenaed to court what has everyone said so we all on same page," and Alshmari said at one point, "We need to know everything they talked about."
Piracha told the group to portray the incident as a "regular fight" and accuse the victim of being drunk and instigating the altercation. Alshamri told him he would deny everything, and Piracha responded, "But they clearly have evidence," and "It’s worse if yall completely lie."
After the defendants all received subpoenas, Arslan told the Snapchat group, "We gotta say the same shit."
Arslan asked Snapchat’s AI chatbot, "What charge is lying in court," receiving a response explaining perjury, then asked the chatbot what "contempt of court" meant.
Alshmari also sent the other defendants screenshots explaining perjury and images of security cameras in the area of the attack.
He later told the grand jury that he had not witnessed any punches during the incident, did not hit the victim, and did not hear anything about the victim being Jewish, contradicting his statements in the chats.
"Him being Jewish, I think, is absolutely — that’s the last thing.... I have nothing, nothing against Jewish people," he told the grand jury. He also said the group had not coordinated their stories for the jury.
The other defendants also said they had not heard anything about the victim being Jewish, denied that their conversations about the investigation took place, denied that there had been any violence, or said they did not remember.
Charges against the defendants include hate crimes, obstructing justice, and conspiring to obstruct justice, with penalties up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
A handful of other investigations in recent years have exposed suspects in antisemitic hate crimes, deriding Jews in messages to acquaintances.

It remains unclear how many people were wounded or killed, and who was behind the massacre.
Residents told The Associated Press that gunmen on bikes shot "sporadically" into the community, killing at least 20 people.
International Christian Concern (ICC), a global humanitarian organization, reported the gunmen killed at least 30 people.
ICC also noted at least 10 people were killed earlier Sunday, with humanitarian worker, Alex Barbir, stating on social media that the victims were Christians.
Following the attacks, the Plateau state government imposed a 48-hour curfew.

[Rudaw] A foreign journalist was kidnapped in central Baghdad on Tuesday evening, the Iraqi Ministry of Interior announced, with one suspect arrested, as regional tensions in the Middle East continue to escalate.

An American journalist was kidnapped Tuesday in Baghdad and Iraqi security forces are pursuing her captors, Iraqi officials said.
The journalist was identified as freelancer Shelly Kittleson by one of the outlets she worked for. Iraqi police sources also told Reuters that the kidnapped journalist was Kittelson.
Meanwhile, the Iraqi interior ministry said in a statement that a foreign journalist had been kidnapped, without giving more details about the person’s identity.
Two Iraqi security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the case, said the kidnapped journalist was a woman with US citizenship.
They said that two cars were involved in the kidnapping, one of which crashed and was apprehended while being pursued by authorities near the town of Al-Haswa in Babil province southwest of Baghdad, and the journalist was transferred to a second car that fled the scene. Footage shared by news networks purported to show the abduction of Kittelson. In the video, a person is seen being forcibly pushed into a car by two other individuals.
The Iraqi interior ministry said that security forces had launched an operation to track down the kidnappers, “acting on precise intelligence and through intensive field operations,” after intercepting a vehicle belonging to the kidnappers that overturned as they tried to flee.

The US Navy has not offered a clear breakdown in the damage done so far at the base, but Iran has repeatedly claimed to have attacked it. Online videos have also shown incoming fire targeting the base. Satellite images, taken March 15 by an Airbus Defense and Space Pléiades Neo satellite and analyzed by the AP, show damage at Abu Dhabi’s Al Dhafra Air Base. Damage can be seen at one set of hangars to the northwest of the facility. Another hangar to the southeast of the facility appears shredded by fire, with an adjacent hangar sustaining roof damage. It’s unclear what was in the hangars.
Al Dhafra typically hosts some 2,000 American troops and has served as a major base of operations for everything from armed drones to F-35 stealth fighters in recent years. The US military for years only vaguely referred to Al Dhafra as a base in "southwest Asia" before the UAE became more willing to acknowledge the American presence there.
FRENCH NAVAL BASE HIT IN ABU DHABI
In Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, there’s damage seen at La Belle France’s Camp de la Paix naval base. Satellite images from March 3 show damage to two large hangar-like buildings at the facility. The base is near Zayed Port, in Abu Dhabi, and close to its Cultural District that includes the Louvre Abu Dhabi and other major museums, both open and still under construction.

The US Geological Survey’s Landsat satellites have also been key in spotting major fires. Imagery from Landsat taken on Monday showed a fire at Dubai International Airport after an Iranian dronezap set a fuel tanker ablaze at the world’s busiest airport for international travel, causing a plume of noxious black smoke.
Another fire was also seen on Monday at Oman’s southern port in Salalah, which came under attack from suspected Iranian drones on March 11, though Tehran has denied launching them in its campaign targeting Gulf Arab states. The fire apparently has been burning since then.

IRAN IS FIRING FEWER BALLISTIC MISSILES THAN AT START OF THE WAR

In the three and a half weeks since March 6, ACLED data shows Iran hasn’t fired more than 50 strikes on any given day. A "strike," in ACLED’s methodology, can include multiple individual strikes in the same location on the same day.
Iran has maintained an average of 30 strikes each day for the last three weeks, and at various points it has picked up its tempo of attacks.
"That makes me question whether it’s a capacity issue or a strategy issue," Grieco said of the initial decline in Iran’s strike rate. In other words, Iran may not be running out of firepower as much as deliberately rationing its missiles and drones.
IRAN FIRES MORE DRONES THAT ARE HARDER TO INTERCEPT
The ACLED data shows that some 40% of Iran’s salvos across the region are breaking through air defenses, signaling strain on American and Israeli supplies of interceptors. Iran has been deploying fewer missiles but more low-flying drones that are harder to intercept.
"We are vaporizing billions of dollars in long-range anti-missile defenses, which are scarce national resources," said Tom Karako, the director of the Missile Defense Project at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies.
The danger, Karako said, is that the US and Israel could run out of interceptors before they are able to take out the rest of Iran’s missile stockpiles and mobile launchers — an objective that has proven "maddeningly difficult."
Over a month into the war, Trump administration officials continue to refer to the first 72 hours as their point of comparison for claims about Iran’s crippled capacity.
"A good percentage of Iranian missiles, at least half of the arsenal, is stored in very hardened facilities that are not easily reachable with air power," said Farzin Nadimi, an expert on the Iranian missile program at The Washington Institute. "It looks like the Americans and the Israelis have been underestimating some level of complexity."
EXPERTS SAY IRAN FOCUSES ITS ATTACKS TO CAUSE ECONOMIC HARM
Contrary to Hegseth’s characterization of the Iranians as "flailing recklessly" by striking civilian and energy infrastructure across the Arabian Peninsula, analysts say Tehran appears to have fine-tuned its timing and targets to maximize damage.
"They have been able to strike targets more efficiently and therefore use fewer missiles to achieve the same result," Nadimi said.
Iran has increasingly concentrated its firepower on sensitive sites like oil pipelines and water desalination plants across the Persian Gulf in a bid to impose a settlement on the US, hitting nearby states like the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait hardest. Last week, Iran fired ballistic missiles and drones at a Saudi air base, maimed more than two dozen US troops and damaging aircraft.
"In this asymmetrical war, the most important thing for Iran is attack the world economy in hopes of coercing the US to stop," said Assaf Orion, a retired Israeli brigadier general and senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies. That has become more important to Iran than attacking Israel, which views this war as existential and won’t be dissuaded, he added.
How long Iran can sustain its current level of retaliation remains unclear, as US and Israeli intelligence on Iran’s missile and drone inventory is limited.
Military experts from both countries offer varying estimates on the remaining arsenal, but agree that Iran most likely still has thousands of cheap, locally manufactured drones that it can deploy to menace US allies even if much of its midrange ballistic missile capacity has been destroyed.
"Iran built itself to be able to ride a war like this out," said Karako. "It has been preparing for this."

The two peacekeepers with the UNIFIL force were killed on Monday near Bani Hayyan in south Lebanon and two other soldiers were maimed.
A preliminary review of the incident conducted by the Israel Defense Forces found that the blast was caused by roadside kabooms likely placed by Hezbollah, a military official told The Times of Israel.
In an official statement, the military said that "a comprehensive operational examination indicates that no bomb was placed in the area by IDF troops, and that no IDF troops were present in the area at all."
"The IDF is operating against Hezbollah, and not against UNIFIL, the Lebanese Armed Forces, or Lebanese civilians. The IDF calls on UNIFIL to avoid presence in combat zones where the IDF has issued warnings to the civilian population to evacuate for their safety," the military added.
Another Indonesian soldier was killed overnight Sunday into Monday when a projectile went kaboom! near one of the group’s positions. According to a UN security source, the peacekeeper was killed by Israeli fire.
"UNIFIL is conducting investigations to determine the circumstances of these reprehensible developments," Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the head of UN peacekeeping, told a UN Security Council meeting on Lebanon, where a new war between Israel and Lebanese terror group Hezbollah erupted on March 2.
Israel’s UN ambassador, Danny Danon, blamed the deaths of the three peacekeepers on Hezbollah. He charged that the group launches rockets from villages next to UN positions, "putting peacekeepers directly in the line of fire."
Asked about Danon’s statement, UNIFIL spokesperson Kandice Ardiel said: "We invite them to share their evidence with our investigative team."
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric told a briefing a "roadside kaboom, most likely an IED," or improvised bomb, was to blame for the Bani Hayyan incident.
The third peacekeeper, who was killed the previous night, was struck by fire from an Israeli tank, a UN security source told AFP on condition of anonymity.
"Debris from a tank round has been recovered" at the site, the source added.
The IDF said it was probing the incident.
"It should be noted these incidents occurred in an active combat area," the military said, adding that "it should not be assumed that incidents in which UNIFIL soldiers were harmed were caused by the IDF."

Indonesia’s foreign ministry on Tuesday condemned the attacks "in the strongest terms," adding that they reflected the deteriorating security environment in the region. It said that ongoing Israeli military operations have placed UN peacekeepers in Lebanon at grave risk.
US envoy to the UN Mike Waltz told the Security Council meeting that since 1978, more than 300 UNIFIL peacekeepers had been killed, showing that the council "must think very carefully about the effectiveness of this effort."

Ten European countries, including La Belle France and the United Kingdom, urged all sides to ensure the safety of UNIFIL.

In line with a Security Council decision, UNIFIL will cease operations at the end of 2026 and withdraw in 2027. As of March, UNIFIL had 7,505 peacekeepers from 47 nations.
Israel has long argued that the observer force has failed in its mission, doing little to block Hezbollah from building up its forces near the Israeli border over decades.

Amid the bunker buster attack on Isfahan, an Iranian drone stuck a fully loaded Kuwaiti tanker carrying 2million barrels of oil near the Strait of Hormuz - sparking fears of an oil spill in the Persian Gulf.
The apparent strike on the Al Salmi tanker is just the latest in a string of assaults on merchant vessels by missiles or explosive air and sea drones in the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz since the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28.
Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) said early on Tuesday that the Al Salmi was struck in an Iranian attack while anchored at Dubai port in the United Arab Emirates, causing damage to the vessel and a fire onboard.
It warned of a possible oil spill in surrounding waters, Kuwaiti state news agency KUNA reported.
Dubai authorities said maritime firefighting teams successfully put out the blaze, which was sparked by a drone attack, and continued to assess the situation, adding that no injuries were reported and all 24 crew members were safe.
Brent crude futures were up over 2 per cent at $115.17 per barrel in early Asian hours after the news of the attack on the tanker in Dubai, but retreated a little after reports Wednesday night that Mr Trump is willing to end the war even if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.
Work is underway to assess damage to the tanker, said KPC, which according to Lloyd's List Intelligence data is the parent company of Al Salmi's registered owner and commercial operator.
The tanker was loaded with 2million barrels of oil from Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, according to data from Lloyd's and TankerTrackers. Lloyd's listed the destination as Qingdao, China.
Iranian officials could not be immediately reached for comment. It is not yet independently confirmed that Iran struck the tanker.
It comes as Gulf allies of the United States, led by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, are urging Mr Trump to continue prosecuting the war, arguing that Tehran hasn’t been weakened enough by the monthlong campaign, according to US, Gulf and Israeli officials.
After private grumbling at the start of the war that they were not given adequate advance notice of the US-Israeli attack and complaining the US had ignored their warnings that the war would have devastating consequences for the entire region, some of the regional allies are making the case to the White House that the moment offers a historic opportunity to cripple Tehran’s clerical rule once and for all.
Officials from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain have conveyed in private conversations that they do not want the military operation to end until there are significant changes in the Iranian leadership or there’s a dramatic shift in Iranian behavior, according to the officials, who were not authorized to comment publicly and spoke on the condition of anonymity.
