Florida police have named a man the "scumbag of the week" for allegedly stealing jewelry from residents at a senior living facility and selling it at pawn shops.
According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, 45-year-old Shaun Burstein — who served as executive director of Arya, a senior living facility in DeBary — is accused of stealing jewelry from elderly residents' rooms and taking it to local pawnshops.
Chitwood wrote in a Jan. 9 Instagram post that deputies were first alerted to a resident's engagement ring going missing from their bedroom at the facility.
Video footage allegedly showed Burstein entering the room while it was unoccupied, going near the jewelry box, and then leaving. Additional footage also showed a separate incident in which Burstein allegedly attempted to open the jewelry box before noticing the camera and leaving.
"Detectives reviewed pawn records that revealed Burstein sold multiple pieces of jewelry, including the stolen engagement ring, which was positively identified and placed on hold," Chitwood wrote on Instagram. "Pawn documentation and a fingerprint confirmed Burstein’s involvement in the sale of the stolen engagement ring."

The synagogue, the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson, Miss., was set ablaze around 3 a.m. on Saturday. No congregants were injured in the fire as the synagogue was closed at the time.
"Acts of antisemitism, racism, and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson as a whole and will be treated as acts of terror against residents’ safety and freedom to worship," Jackson Mayor John Horhn said in a statement.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was found at a local hospital with non-life-threatening burn injuries and, once medically cleared, will be released into the custody of the FBI, which is also expected to file charges, Felton said.
Note that while the congregation, the sole Jewish congregation in Jackson and the largest of the 14 synagogues in the state, was established in 1860, they’ve only been in that building for a few years. It’s not the same location that was firebombed by the KKK in 1967 because the rabbi supported Black civil rights.

The weekend fire ripped through the Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson shortly after 3 a.m. on Saturday. No congregants or firefighters were injured in the blaze. Security camera footage released Monday by the synagogue showed a masked and hooded person using a gas can to pour a liquid on the floor and a couch in the building’s lobby.
During his interview with investigators, Pittman said he stopped at a gas station on his way to the synagogue to purchase the gas used in the fire. He also took the license plate off of his vehicle at the gas station. He then used an ax to break out a window of the building, poured gas inside and used a torch lighter to start the fire, the affidavit states.
The FBI later recovered a burned cell phone believed to be Pittman’s, and recovered a hand torch a member of the congregation found and turned over to authorities.
Pittman’s arrest follows the suspect’s father contacted the FBI and saying that his son confessed to setting the building on fire, the affidavit states. Data on the suspect’s cell phone corroborated that information, the agent wrote.
The son ‘laughed as he told his father what he did and said he finally got them,’ says the affidavit from Nicholas Amiano, an FBI agent in the Jackson division.
According to Mississippi Today, Steven Pittman was a ‘was a multi-year honor roll student and varsity baseball player at St. Joseph Catholic School in Madison.’
After graduating from St. Joseph in 2024, Pittman played baseball at Coahoma Community College. ‘I am blessed to announce I will be commuting to Coahoma Community College to play baseball,’ Pittman posted on X in 2023. ‘Thank you God and everyone who has helped me along the way! Go tigers!’ Pittman posted regularly on his X account, often about baseball and Christianity. Many posts pair videos of him practicing his swing in a batting cage with a captioned Bible verse.
‘Mississippi stands with the members of Beth Israel Congregation,’ said Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves in a released statement. ‘This heinous act will never be tolerated, and the perpetrator should face the full and solemn weight of their actions. I have directed the Mississippi Department of Public Safety to support our federal law enforcement partners in any manner necessary as they investigate this horrible situation and pursue state charges.’
It remained unclear if Pittman would now face additional ‘hate crime‘ charges after admitting to targeting the religious institution on account of its Jewish identity.
Pittman was scheduled to make an initial court appearance Monday afternoon.

Europe's NATO force is actually slightly bigger than the US military. Buuuuuuuut militaries are more than just raw numbers.
They are scattered and fragmented through multiple nations and commands and lack any real transport capability. France did an air assault brigade transport exercise to Latvia last year and it took them over a week to get there.
The US can transport a brigade in 48 hours and some light battalions in 24 hours any where in the world. If Europe has any hope of being anything but a second rate regional power, they need transport capability. They have always relied on the US to get their first, hold the line and transport their slow asses to the front after since the cold war ended (and even during. Looking at you France).
