Joaquín Guzmán López, son of cartel boss Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán, pleaded guilty in a Chicago federal courtroom Monday to drug-trafficking and continuing criminal enterprise charges, according to reports.
Guzmán López, 39, is among the so-called Chapitos, the group of brothers who took over a major faction of the Sinaloa cartel after drug kingpin El Chapo’s 2019 conviction and life sentence.
Prosecutors say the brothers increased the production and distribution of narcotics, including fentanyl, and created a massive pipeline that funneled tens of thousands of kilograms of drugs into the U.S. each year, per reports.
In court, wearing an orange jumpsuit, Guzmán López replied when Judge Sharon Coleman asked about his occupation: "Drug trafficking," he said, the Associated Press reported.
"Oh that’s your job," Coleman replied. "There you go," she said.
Guzmán López pleaded guilty to two counts of drug trafficking and continuing criminal enterprise after acknowledging his role in overseeing the transporting of drugs to the U.S., mostly through underground tunnels.
Guzmán López's attorney said the plea deal allows his client to avoid an automatic life sentence, according to the Associated Press.
Prosecutors said they would consider reducing his punishment further if he cooperates, though he still faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years and loses the right to appeal.
Guzmán López was arrested in July 2024 alongside longtime cartel figure Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada after landing on a private jet in Texas.
As part of his plea, Guzmán López also admitted taking part in a violent kidnapping linked to cartel infighting.
Prosecutors said he ordered a window panel removed so armed men could storm a meeting, hood the victim, believed by some to be Zambada, drug him, and fly him to New Mexico.
Monday’s plea follows a similar agreement reached months earlier by his brother, Ovidio Guzmán López, on trafficking and money-laundering charges.
El Chapo himself remains in a maximum-security U.S. prison serving life without parole for running a multibillion-dollar trafficking empire. Prosecutors say his son stepped into his role.

The Borno Police Command says its operatives have repelled an attack by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on Malari village in Konduga Local Government Area, while a joint search-and-rescue operation is underway to free three abducted farmers.
Sources said the incident occurred on Nov. 30 at about 12:00 p.m. when the terrorists, riding on more than 15 motorcycles, invaded the community and opened fire.
During the attack, a 15-year-old boy, Basha Goigoi of Muna, was shot in the right thigh and rushed to the General Hospital, Maiduguri, where he is currently receiving treatment.
The assailants also abducted three residents identified as Alhaji Kundili (35), Baba Goni (45) and Modu Baluye (50), all of Malari village, while they were working on their farms.
The Police Crack Squad deployed in Konduga responded swiftly, engaging the terrorists in a gun battle and successfully repelling the attack.
A combined team comprising the troops of Operation HADIN KAI, police tactical squads, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) and local hunters has since launched a coordinated operation to track the attackers and rescue the abducted victims.
Security forces urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely information to security agencies to aid ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the area.

Two minors, one of them a Russian national, have been placed in custody in Paris on suspicion of plotting an antisemitic attack, according to judicial and press sources.
The Russian, a Chechen 16-year-old who came to France with his mother four years ago, had sent a photo on WhatsApp of himself holding a knife and announced that he was “going to kill Jews in five days,” Le Parisien newspaper reported.
He was in contact with the other 16-year-old, who lived in the Paris region, and threatened to target a site of religious worship, the newspaper added. The second teen was described as coming from a family with “a Muslim background.”
Confirming the press reports, France’s national anti-terror prosecutor’s office told AFP on Monday that the pair had been charged with “participation in a terrorist criminal association with the aim of preparing one or more crimes against persons.”
Le Parisien cited an investigation source as saying they adhered to the ideology of the Islamic State terror group.
France has charged 20 minors for terrorism-related offenses in 2025 so far, with prosecutors pointing to an uptick in young people being indicted for such plots over the past five years.
The pair’s detention increases this year’s total over the 19 minors charged with terrorism-related offences across the whole of 2024.
