The nuclear-powered Poseidon unmanned underwater vehicle has no range limit and is capable of crossing the ocean. The Washington Post (WP) reported on the Russian weapon's unique capability on November 1.
As noted in the article, it is the nuclear reactor that allows Poseidon to traverse vast ocean expanses with virtually no range limitations.
"[This] makes it a 'Frankenstein' weapon, occupying a position between a torpedo and an unmanned underwater vehicle," the newspaper writes, citing expert Michael B. Petersen.
Petersen emphasized that the weapon was not designed for direct combat. In his opinion, the primary purpose of the Poseidon is to force the enemy to retreat when threatened with its use.
The expert believes that Moscow will use it only in exceptional cases—when a global strategic war has either already begun or remains the only option.
