[IsraelTimes] Reconstruction on Israel’s side of the “Yellow Line” dividing the Gaza Strip doesn’t have to wait for the second phase of the Gaza ceasefire plan brokered by US President Donald Trump, a Prime Minister’s Office official tells The Times of Israel.
“The land is clear now, and actually we can start building,” says the official. “We don’t need to wait for phase two on our side.”
People of different nationalities want to come in and invest.
“If there [are] people that are pro-Israel, and won’t be in any way a harm to Israel, why not bring them in? Why not let them build?”
US Vice President JD Vance raised that approach last week. “This is all still pretty early, but that’s the basic idea,” he said before leaving Israel. “Take the areas where Hamas is not operating, start to rebuild very quickly, start to bring in the Gazans so they can live there, so they can have good jobs and hopefully some security and comfort, too.”

Sometimes dubbed the “Mandela of Palestine” by his supporters, Marwan Barghouti, 66, has been serving multiple life sentences since 2004 for helping plan terror attacks during the Second Intifada that killed five people in Israel.
He denies the charges against him and has also rejected the Israeli court’s jurisdiction to try him as a member of the Palestinian Authority’s parliament.
The heavy sentences have not diminished his popularity among Palestinians, many of whom see him as a possible successor to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.
“He’s capable and has the track record to unify the Palestinian people,” Arab Barghouti tells AFP in an interview in English from the West Bank city of Ramallah.
“Someone like him represents a great opportunity for the international community to prove that they are serious about supporting the two-state solution.”
Arab Barghouti is the second member of the family to appeal to Trump to secure his father’s release. Earlier this month, Barghouti’s wife Fadwa also urged him to intervene.
Trump said in an interview with US magazine Time on October 15 that he would be “making a decision” on the matter, without specifying a timeline.
“I really hope he can do that, pressure the Israelis into releasing my father, because he is a partner for peace,” Arab Barghouti says, adding that his family “really welcome” Trump’s comment.
Western countries, including the US, “need to seize the opportunity of having a Palestinian leader who is well-respected and trusted and has the same vision that they have,” he says.

For the first time since the October 7, 2023, onslaught, Defense Minister Israel Katz on Monday ruled that the emergency situation declared in southern Israel will be lifted.
The "special situation" allowed the military’s Home Front Command to restrict gatherings and close off areas. It was declared on the morning of October 7 in the entire country, but has since remained in place only in the south.
The order will expire on Tuesday, and for the first time in over two years, there will be no active "special situation" in the country.
The move adds a further indication that the Israel Defense Forces considers the war in the Gazoo Strip to be over, as US President Donald Trump ...The Hero of Butler, Pennsylvania... has repeatedly declared. However,

"I have decided to adopt the IDF’s recommendation and to remove, for the first time since October 7, the special situation in the home front," Katz said in a statement.
He said that "the decision reflects the new security reality in the south of the country that was achieved thanks to the determined and powerful actions over the past two years of our heroic troops against the Hamas terror organization."
War erupted when Hamas-led Lions of Islam rampaged through southern communities on October 7, killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages, while carrying out brutal atrocities.

The end of the emergency situation comes after a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas took effect on October 10, pausing the Gaza war.

It was the first time Hamas had handed over a body in six days, as Israel insists that the terror group is dragging its feet on the requirement of the ceasefire that came into place on October 10.
The agreement required Hamas to return all 48 living and deceased hostages within 72 hours, and while the group followed through in handing over all 20 living hostages, it only returned four of the 28 bodies still held in Gazoo

Hamas said in its Monday statement that it had "retrieved" a hostage’s remains earlier that day, without elaborating further, while Al Jazeera reported that the body was recovered during a search of Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood in the northern Strip.
The Red Thingy handed over the coffin to IDF troops inside Gaza. The military inspected the casket and draped it in an Israeli flag. A small ceremony led by a military rabbi was then held.
The casket was subsequently transferred to Israel, where police escorted it to the Abu Kabir forensic institute in Tel Aviv for identification, a process that officials have said may take up to two days.
If the body is indeed that of a slain hostage, it would leave the remains of twelve hostages in Gaza.
According to a Channel 13 report published prior to the latest handover, Israeli intelligence believed Hamas could locate the remains of 10 of the then-13 slain hostages’ bodies still held in Gaza.
Among those are Col. Asaf Hamami and Lt. Hadar Goldin — the former commander of the Gaza Division’s Southern Brigade and a soldier killed in 2014, respectively. Israel believes Hamas is intentionally withholding those bodies because the fallen soldiers have become symbolic figures in Israel, the report added.
Israel has repeatedly accused Hamas of intentionally holding onto bodies despite knowing where they are, in violation of the US-brokered agreement that stopped fighting in the two-year-old war.
Hamas front man Hazem Qassem denied this on Monday, saying: "The occupation’s claims that Hamas knows the whereabouts of hostages are false, particularly after the aggression in the Strip [a reference to the war], which has changed the face of the territory."
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said Monday that the war will not be over until the last of the dear departed hostages held in Gaza are brought home, referring to this as a "sacred mission," and also calling for Israel to "continue the campaign against Hamas."
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum on Monday demanded that the next steps in the US-brokered Gaza peace plan be put on hold until Hamas returns the remaining bodies.
"Hamas knows exactly where every one of the dear departed hostages is held. Two weeks have passed since the deadline set in the agreement for the return of all 48 hostages, yet 13 remain in Hamas captivity," the forum said.
"The families urge the Government of Israel, the Trump administration and the mediators not to advance to the next phase of the [Gaza peace plan] until Hamas fulfills all of its obligations and returns every hostage to Israel."
ISRAEL SAID TO FLOAT MOVING CEASEFIRE LINE TO PRESSURE HAMAS
On Sunday, US President Donald Trump ...Oh, noze! Not him!... issued a Truth Social post warning that he would be following closely Hamas’s actions over the next 48 hours, suggesting that the group wasn’t doing enough to retrieve the remaining hostages.
The post marked a shift, as the US had largely pushed back on Israeli accusations that Hamas was violating the ceasefire, arguing that it will take time to retrieve some of the bodies as they are buried deep under rubble or in places where Hamas doesn’t know where they are.
However,
a clean conscience makes a soft pillow... Channel 12 reported that Trump’s post was not meant as a hard deadline for the terror group to return the remaining bodies of slain hostages, as the 48-hour window closed.
Citing unnamed US officials, the network said Trump’s message was intended to signal that he expects Hamas to urgently begin returning the bodies of hostages.
Israel, meanwhile, is continuing to push for a credible threat of action to pressure Hamas to comply with the deal, the network reported, saying that while the US opposes restricting humanitarian aid to Gaza, Washington is open to discussing an Israeli proposal to move the IDF’s "yellow line" westward — allowing Israeli forces to enter areas previously held by Hamas — if the terror group continues to withhold the dear departed hostages’ bodies.

[IsraelTimes] A casket handed over by Hamas ..a contraction of the Arabic words for "frothing at the mouth",... on Monday night to Israel contained the partial remains of Ofir Tzarfati, a hostage whose body was recovered by the military in early December 2023, Israeli officials said.
In addition to not returning the bodies of any of the 13 dead hostages still held in the Gazoo Strip, Hamas staged the "discovery" of Tzarfati’s remains in eastern Gaza City in front of the Red Thingy.
Israel has said Hamas has access to many of the remaining bodies and is dragging its feet in returning them, which it is required to do under the terms of the US-backed ceasefire agreement.
On Monday, Hamas brought the remains of Tzarfati out of a building and placed them in a hole it had dug in the ground in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City. It then covered the body in dirt and pretended to uncover it for the first time in front of the Red Thingy.
The entire incident was filmed by a military drone. The footage leaked to the media later on Tuesday, after Tzarfati’s family was notified by military representatives that additional remains of his body were returned by Hamas.

Tzarfati had been kidnapped from the Nova music festival during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack, where he was celebrating his 27th birthday. He was declared dead the following month, and his body was recovered by the IDF in the Gaza Strip on December 1 and brought back to Israel for burial.
The IDF drone video showed Hamas operatives bringing a body bag from a building to a hole that was dug in the ground, before covering it in dirt. The operatives were then seen digging up the body bag using an excavator, before dumping it nearby.
Red Thingy representatives were seen arriving as the excavator dumped more dirt on the body bag. The Hamas operatives then uncovered the body bag in front of them, with one seen taking pictures with his phone

[IsraelTimes] The US State Department announces that it is donating humanitarian aid for Druze, Christian and Bedouin communities in southern Syria.
The announcement doesn’t specify how much aid has been donated, but it says that it will “support life-saving needs of approximately 60,000 people through targeted provision of food, water and hygiene items as well as the rehabilitation of houses and water systems for when people can safely return home.”
“While hostilities have largely subsided, the security situation remains unpredictable. This has resulted in limited movement of supplies that has affected civilian safety and the ability of the approximately 187,000 displaced individuals to return to their homes,” the State Department statement continues, calling on other countries to join the US in providing aid to the Syrian people.
