[AFRICANEWS] Fighting in North Darfur's embattled capital of el-Fasher has tripled the number of displaced people this year alone in Tawila, a town about 60 kilometers away, said a UN migration agency official.
Ugochi Daniels, deputy director general for operations at the International Organization for Migration, IOM, told the News Agency that Dare Not be Named Thursday that the conflict had also reduced el-Fasher's own population by 62 percent this year. She warned that the massive displacement presents major challenges for the country, echoing other aid workers who have repeatedly labeled Sudan ...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans... the world's largest displacement crisis.
The recent displacement spike was fueled by intensified fighting in el-Fasher, which has seen a series of attacks in the conflict between the army and rival paramilitaries as they seek to control the city.
The war between the Rapid Support Forces, RSF, and the military began in 2023 when tensions erupted between the two former allies that were meant to oversee a democratic transition after a 2019 uprising.
The fighting has killed at least 40,000 people, according to the World Health Organization, and displaced as many as 12 million others. Over 24 million people are facing acute food insecurity, according to the World Food Program.
''North Darfur remains the epicenter of the crisis here in Sudan and we need peace to be able to access the most difficult places where the needs are the greatest,'' said Daniels.
El-Fasher is the military's last stronghold in the sprawling Darfur region, which has been the epicenter of the violence along with Kordofan.
Daniels explained that it's hard to provide services for many people who have moved in such a short period of time, especially amid the collapse of health care and other essential services.
The conflict and resultant mass displacement have restricted access to essential services like clean water, proper nutrition, and health care.

Jean Alam, a front man for the UN resident coordinator for Yemen, says Houthi security forces entered the UN compound in Sanaa earlier today.
He tells The News Agency that Dare Not be Named there were 15 UN international staff members in the facility at the time of the raid, and that "according to latest information all staff in the compound are safe and accounted for and have contacted their families."
The rebels raided UN offices in Sanaa on August 31 and detained 19 employees, according to the UN. They later released the deputy director of the UNICEF office in the country.
"The United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... is taking all necessary measures and is in contact with the relevant authorities and counterparts to ensure the safety and security of all personnel and property," Alam says.

[Breitbart] A ship caught fire Saturday in the Gulf of Aden off Yemen after being struck by a projectile, the British military said, with one report suggesting its crew was preparing to abandon the vessel.
The incident comes as Yemen´s Houthi rebels have been attacking ships through the Red Sea corridor. However, the rebels did not immediately claim the attack, though it can take them hours or even days to do so.
The British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center issued an alert about the vessel, describing the incident as taking place some 210 kilometers (130 miles) east of Aden.
“A vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile, resulting with a fire,” the UKMTO said. “Authorities are investigating.”
The maritime security firm Ambrey described the ship as a Cameroon-flagged tanker that was “en route from Sohar, Oman, to Djibouti.” It said radio traffic suggested the crew was preparing to abandon ship and a search-and-rescue effort was underway.
The Houthis have gained international prominence during the Israel-Hamas war over their attacks on shipping and Israel, which they said were aimed at forcing Israel to stop fighting. Since the ceasefire began on Oct. 10, no attacks have been claimed by the rebel group.
The Houthi campaign against shipping has killed at least nine mariners and seen four ships sunk. It upended shipping in the Red Sea, through which about $1 trillion of goods passed each year before the war. The rebels’ most recent attack hit the Dutch-flagged cargo ship Minervagracht on Sept. 29, killing one crew member on board and wounding another.

To me, tribe refers to Native Americans, stone age aborigines, and some Arabs, eg. Charles Glass’s Tribes With Flags. It’s not clear to me why anyone would so describe the Jews — we seem no more tribal than Italians or Poles.

And there were also expat communities dotted around the Middle East and as far as India, so while the tribes were lost as historic entities, they contributed descendants to the Jewish people as a whole to this day.

Follow up to yesterday’s story here. Another fizzle for the oh so cleverly named 50501 Movement (“50 states, 50 protests, one movement”). Lots of illustrative tweets with photos or videos at the link. Still, first pass reportage shows only a small number of old, white communists and rent-a-mobbers bothered to turn out across the country for a few hours in the fresh air and sunshine before heading home for a late lunch, except for a few larger crowds that included Black Bloc/Antifa in select big cities. Also NeverTrumper and Lincoln Project cofounder George Conway, Kellyanne Conway’s ex-husband, who unlike her has not aged at all well, despite Ozempic, hair dye, and botox.

First Maine, now Illinois: a suburban reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown ...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel... officer’s arrest by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has exposed another stunning breach in the nation’s vetting system, marking at least the second time in three months that an armed lawman turned out to be in the U.S. illegally.
On July 25, according to ICE, Jon Luke Evans, of Jamaica, was serving as a reserve officer with Old Orchard Beach, Maine Police Department when he was arrested after he unlawfully attempted to purchase a gun. Old Orchard Beach, according to the Department of Homeland Security, is considered a sanctuary jurisdiction, due to their refusal to comply with the administration's immigration enforcement efforts.
On Thursday, Radule Bojovic, of Montenegro, who was serving as a police officer with the Hanover Park Police Department when he was arrested during Operation Midway Blitz, which targets illegal immigrants colonists living in Illinois because of the state's sanctuary policies, federal officials announced. Hanover Park, like Old Orchard Beach, is also considered to be a sanctuary jurisdiction.
The back-to-back arrests of Evans and Bojovic, occurring within just three months and both in sanctuary jurisdictions, highlight the Trump administration’s ongoing crackdown aimed at removing illegal aliens from the streets.
ICE said that both Evans and Bojovic initially entered the U.S. legally, but both overstayed their visas.
Evans, the agency said, entered the United States Sept. 24, 2023, at Miami International Airport. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth... he violated the terms when he overstayed his visa. ICE said that he was scheduled to depart the U.S. Oct. 1, 2023, but never boarded the flight.
His arrest came when he went to purchase a gun, telling employees that he was a police officer. His attempt to purchase the gun triggered an alert to ATF agents, who worked in coordination with ICE to make the arrest.
Federal authorities said Bojovic was in the U.S. on a tourist visa that required him to depart by March 31, 2015. Over a decade later, he was still illegally in the U.S. As an officer, Bojovic was approved by the Pension Fund Board of Trustees in January 2025 and was eligible to receive a starting salary of $78,955.
Both police departments involved have defended their hiring practices and stopped short of accepting responsibility for the vetting failures that allowed the two men to serve as officers.
In Maine, Old Orchard Beach Police Chief Elise Chard said her department followed every legal step in hiring the Jamaican national, including submitting his paperwork through the federal E-Verify system, which confirmed his employment eligibility.
The department maintains that Evans presented valid work authorization documents and that DHS had cleared him to serve as a reserve officer. Officials say they were blindsided by the ICE arrest and only learned of it through a blurb.
While the chief described the situation as "deeply concerning," she attributed the breakdown to a possible federal error and said the department would review its procedures.
"Our department and our community relied on the Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify program to ensure we were meeting our obligations," said Chief Chard. "We are distressed and deeply concerned about this apparent error on the part of the federal government."
In Illinois, officials in the Village of Hanover Park issued a nearly identical defense after the arrest of the Montenegrin national, who had been working as a full-time police officer.
In a release, the department said Bojovic provided a valid work authorization card at the time of his hiring and passed both state and federal background checks. The department has placed him on administrative leave pending the outcome of his immigration case but has not conceded fault, insisting that all standard vetting protocols were followed.

An Israeli military official confirmed the strikes to Fox News on Sunday, pointing to attacks by Hamas since Friday. The official says the attacks on Israeli forces all took place beyond the line behind which Israel had withdrawn under the terms of the agreement.
''The terror organization Hamas carried out multiple attacks against Israeli forces beyond the yellow line. The attacks included an RPG shot at a military force, and a sniper fire against a military force,'' the official told Fox News in a statement.
''Both of the incidents happened in an Israeli-controlled area, east to the yellow line. This is a bold violation of the cease-fire,'' the official added.
Israel has responded by striking areas in the north and south of the Gaza Strip.
The reported attacks on Israeli troops comes after Hamas spent days fighting Paleostinian rival groups after the cease-fire went into effect.
According to Rooters, Hamas executed at least 33 people in recent days in what officials described as a campaign to ''show strength'' after the cease-fire. Israeli sources say most of those killed belonged to families accused of collaborating with Israel or supporting rival militias.
The U.S. Department of State on Saturday warned on Saturday that Hamas may break the peace agreement with a ''planned attack'' on Paleostinian civilians.

LABOR MK HAILS ANTI-GOVERNMENT RALLY, VOWS MORE ACTION
At a nearby anti-government protest outside the IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv, Labor MK Gilad Kariv thanked the hundreds of demonstrators, saying they — who have protested throughout the war in explicit opposition to the government, rather than merely for the return of the hostages
…and not fooling us about their selfish motivation…
— are “the ember from which the grand democratic protest movement will reignite.”
The left-wing lawmaker hailed “the protest that is not content with a truce, but demands a final and total end to the war; the protest that remembers the deep connection between the judicial overhaul and October 7; and that doesn’t forget that even now, Netanyahu prefers to dance the tango with Hamas and the Qataris instead of negotiating for peace” with the Palestinians.
Kariv added that he is also addressing what he describes as excessively polite fellow opposition members.
“From now on, 100 percent determination, zero percent purism,” he said.
Kariv said that alongside the happiness at the return of the last living hostages, “we will never forget that this deal could have been reached many months ago… and we will never forget the bereaved families of fallen IDF soldiers who paid the dearest price because of the dragging on of this war.” Netanyahu has repeatedly argued that a deal similar to the one signed wasn’t possible before now.
“And yes, we also do not close our eyes to what has happened in Gaza,” Kariv added.
Concluding, he slammed the “political police” for its treatment of the so-called “trash bin detainees” — six anti-government activists arrested last month for setting fire to recycling bins near Netanyahu’s Jerusalem residence during a protest there, which sparked blazes that engulfed a resident’s car and forced the temporary evacuation of an adjacent building.
“There is selective enforcement in Israel and it’s directed at us,” he said, noting the police’s failure to similarly detain people who attacked a Reform synagogue in Ra’anana earlier this year, and a right-wing mob that stormed two military bases last year in protest of the arrest of reservists suspected of sexually abusing a Palestinian inmate.
[GEO.TV] Gaza's health ministry said enclave's hospital received at least bodies of 29 people in the last 48 hours.
The statement shared by the ministry stated that ''23 recovered martyrs, two succumbed to the their injuries, and 4 martyrs as a result of direct targeting by the [Israeli] occupation, and 21 injuries in the past 48 hours.
Additionally, ''11 martyrs under the rubble in the Abu Shaaban massacre who have not been recovered yet and therefore have not been added to the statistics''.
Israel killed 11 members of the same family in an attack on a vehicle in Gaza City's Zeitoun neighbourhood yesterday, in the deadliest attack on Palestinians since the ceasefire went into effect.
On Saturday, the military said an Israeli Navy vessel had fired warning shots at several Palestinian boats that “violated the naval blockade” on Gaza and “posed a threat” to troops off the Strip’s southern coast. It added that the Gazan vessels turned around and there were no reports of injuries in the incident.

I wonder if they're counting the people Gazans executed by Hamas among the 29?
Hamas started killing Fatah personnel when they drove out the PA government in 2006 after winning the legislative election. This is more of the same, which is why it is madness to think the PA could take control of Gaza — they are neither vicious enough nor clever enough to control Hamas.
[IsraelTimes] Media outlets in Gaza report that Hamas members executed Hisham al-Saftawi in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
His relatives film themselves after his funeral, saying they will not open a mourning tent until they have avenged his death at the hands of Hamas, and that they know the name of the Hamas member who killed him.
A statement issued by the family and circulated online says he was executed in his home by a large force from Hamas’s military wing, who shot him, and that the family will settle accounts with them.
The reason for Saftawi’s killing is unclear.
Online reports claim he was affiliated with Fatah, and his relatives tell Al-Arabiya that during the war the family participated in “guarding aid,” possibly meaning they were paid to provide security for humanitarian aid and engaged in its illegal resale.
In addition, a Telegram channel affiliated with Hamas publishes a video showing Hamas members throwing stones at the legs of a Gaza resident who, in recent months, was filmed thanking Trump and Netanyahu at Gaza Humanitarian Fund aid distribution centers.
In the new video, the resident — while being beaten — can be heard repeatedly saying “Hamas is not finished,” apparently under pressure from Hamas members.

[Rudaw] The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced Thursday they had dismantled two Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems.... (ISIS) "terrorist cells" and arrested several of the group’s snuffies in Syria’s eastern Deir ez-Zor province, with the support of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.
In a statement, the SDF said its "commando" units, in coordination with Coalition forces, conducted "two precise security operations" in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
The first operation, conducted in the village of al-Bariha in the al-Busayrah area, resulted in the arrest of an ISIS member "proven to be involved in attacks against our forces and civilians," according to the SDF. Weapons and ammunition were also seized during the raid.
In a second operation, also in the al-Busayrah area, SDF units "dismantled another ISIS terrorist cell and arrested two of its members." The captured individuals were reportedly "responsible for several terrorist attacks targeting our forces, security personnel, and civilians in the region," the SDF said.
The Kurdish-led forces reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation with the Global Coalition, aiming to "eradicate the terrorist organization from its roots, eliminate its financial and ideological sources, and prevent any terrorist activity that threatens the region’s security and stability."
These developments come amid rising concerns about ISIS’s resurgence.
In late September, the SDF reported that ISIS had carried out more than 153 attacks in areas under Kurdish control in northern and eastern Syria since the early December ouster of longtime dictator Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor. If he'd stuck with it he'd have had a good practice by now... "Between the fall of the [Assad-led] Baath regime [on December 8, 2024] and September 20, 2025, ISIS cells carried out 153 attacks in North and East Syria - evidence of ongoing efforts to reorganize and expand operations," the SDF said.
Although ISIS’s so-called caliphate was dismantled in Syria in 2019, the group remains active, exploiting security vacuums - especially in contested areas between Kurdish-held territories and those controlled by Damascus. Its decentralized network of sleeper cells and bad boys, frequently using hit-and-run tactics against both military and civilian targets in northeast Syria (Rojava).
Since December 2024, the SDF has conducted multiple operations aimed at preventing an ISIS resurgence. These include arrests of suspected snuffies and repeated raids on the al-Hol camp in northeast Syria’s Hasaka province, where ISIS operatives are believed to be active.
The camp houses around 27,488 people - mostly women and kiddies with suspected ISIS ties - remains a major concern for security forces. Most residents are Iraqi or Syrian, though many come from other countries.
The SDF - which functions as the de facto military force in Rojava - has since early December carried out numerous operations to counter any attempted comeback by ISIS.

Technically the local Al Qaeda franchise, Super Hose, though they’ve absorbed ISIS and Muslim Brotherhood elements as well as the formal Assad Syrian national army. Turkey’s paramilitary proxies in Syria absorbed ISIS and Muslim Brotherhood elements and units, too.

Saturday killed a Hezbollah operative, the military announced, as it continued its recent policy of targeting construction vehicles it says are being used by the terror group to rebuild positions.
The operative was operating heavy machinery in the village of Kfar Dounine, in an attempt to restore Hezbollah infrastructure in the area that had been destroyed during the fighting last year, the IDF said.
The army said that the "terrorist’s activities constituted a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon. "
The Lebanese health ministry confirmed one person was killed in the strike.
"The Israeli enemy’s airstrike on a vehicle... resulted in one martyr," the health ministry said in a statement.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported that it was a dronezap that "targeted an excavator with two missiles on the Kfar Dounine-Deir Kifa road".
Israel has destroyed hundreds of construction vehicles and other pieces of heavy machinery in recent weeks, in what it says is a policy aimed at eliminating Hezbollah’s ability to rebuild its infrastructure in southern Lebanon.
On Friday, the IDF said it killed a Hezbollah operative who was driving in the southern Lebanon town of Khirbet Selm. According to the IDF, the individual was involved in restoring Hezbollah military capabilities in the area.
IDF BUSTS WEAPONS SMUGGLERS
Later Friday, the army foiled an attempt to smuggle weapons from Syria into Lebanon in the Mount Hermon area, it said in a statement released Saturday.
Troops of the 810th "Mountains" Regional Brigade and field interrogators of the Intelligence Directorate’s Unit 504 detained several suspects near the peak of Mount Hermon during the overnight operation, the military said.
According to the IDF, the suspects were trying to smuggle grenades, handguns, RPGs and ammunition into Lebanon.
The suspects were taken for further questioning.
The IDF has been deployed to nine posts inside southern Syria since the fall of the Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad Terror of Aleppo ... regime in December 2024, mostly within a UN-patrolled buffer zone on the border between the countries. Two posts are on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon.
