[FoxNews] Homeland Security Investigations says suspects used fake documents and sedated children at checkpoints
Four people are facing charges in a shocking child-smuggling case out of El Paso, Texas.
The four are accused of smuggling unaccompanied children between five and 13 years old from Juárez, Mexico, into the United States, posing as the children's parents at Border Patrol checkpoints and sedating them with marijuana gummies.
Mexican nationals Susana Guadian and Daniel Guadian, their daughter, Dianne Guadian, a U.S. citizen; and Manuel Valenzuela, a legal U.S. resident living in El Paso, were charged in the Western District of Texas with conspiracy to transport aliens and bringing aliens to the U.S. for financial gain. Officials are working on extraditing the Mexican nationals to the U.S. to face their charges, according to Jason Stevens, the Special Agent in Charge of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) El Paso.
"They would have the drivers pose as their parents and provide U.S. documents, falsely claiming that the documents belong to those children that were being smuggled," Stevens said.
According to the criminal complaint, the smuggling events happened between May 1, 2024, and Oct. 18, 2024. During at least one smuggling event, one child was taken to the hospital after taking gummy candies laced with marijuana.
"We've seen everything from Benadryl to now these gummies being used to be able to sedate the children," Stevens added. "They would normally bring them in overnight between 10 a.m. and 4 or 5 a.m., when the children would be sleeping anyway. They use that to ensure that they stay sedated, and that way they're less likely to answer questions or provide anything that's going to be inconsistent or contrary to what the smuggler's saying."
The criminal complaint includes text messages to the suspect, which translate to English, "Young lady, are you working today? I have a boy 7 and 8. They are small," and another text reads, "Also Fanny, I have two little girls ages 4 and 5."
Proof-of-life pictures of some of the children were found on the suspects' phones.
Stevens says the parents trusted the smugglers to deliver their children to family members in the U.S., despite the significant risks.
"These children are nothing more than currency to the criminals," Stevens said. "We want to ensure that we interdict this and stop this before they get here because there are instances where we find children that are in stash houses, or we get cases where we will be contacted by a local department where a family is being extorted and children are being held."

[POWERLINEBLOG] Acting United States Attorney for Minnesota Joe Thompson called a presser for 11:00 a.m. yesterday morning. I attended the presser along with several other news hounds to hear his statement and ask a few questions.
Thompson called the presser to announce indictments and criminal complaints in eight new fraud cases against ''Minnesota men'' with such resonant names as Mokhtar Hassan Aden, Mustafa Dayib Ali, and Khalid Ahmed Dayib. Aden founded the company Brilliant Minds Services LLC and operated it with Ali and Dayib out of the Griggs-Midway Building on University Avenue in St. Paul. The business model was built on defrauding Minnesota's first-in-the-nation Medicaid Housing Stabilization Services program.
''Most of these cases, unlike a lot of Medicare fraud and Medicaid fraud cases nationally, aren't just over-billing,'' Thompson explained. ''These are often just purely fictitious companies solely created to defraud the system, and that that's unique in the extent to which we have that here in Minnesota.''
The remaining five Minnesota men against whom charges were announced yesterday sport equally resonant names: Abdifitah Mohamud Mohammed, Christopher Adesoji Falade, Emmanuel Oluwademilade Falade, Asad Ahmed Adow, and Anwar Ahmed Adow.
In the blurb prepared for the presser, we learn that the HSS program seems almost to have been designed to facilitate fraud: ''By design, the Program had low barriers to entry for new providers and for beneficiaries. The program also had minimal requirements for reimbursement. The HSS Program's low barriers to entry and minimal records requirements for reimbursement combined to make the program susceptible to fraud.'' You might almost say the ''Minnesota men'' were entrapped!
Mr. Thompson emphasized that the charges against the eight defendants announced yesterday were just the first wave in this particular fraud case. More are on the way.

Police say the broadcasting station in Sacramento, California, was struck by at least three bullets in what they're calling a drive-by shooting.
No injuries were reported, but the shots hit a window that faces the street, and people were inside the building at the time, according to Sacramento Police.
'We haven't had a lot of attacks on our media partners, and we'd like to keep it that way,' Officer Anthony Gamble of the Sacramento Police Department said.
'To those that may have been responsible for this, and I hope you see this, we're not going to stop looking for you. This is unacceptable behavior. It's not going to be tolerated in Sacramento', he added.
The gunfire was reported around 1:30 p.m., just 24 hours after around 15 people gathered outside ABC10 (KXTV) to protest the suspension of Kimmel.
Authorities are investigating whether the shooting was random or targeted, though police have not released a motive or any suspect information.
'All of our employees are safe and unharmed,' Tegna, KXTV's parent company, spokesperson Molly McMahon said.

The suspect, 64-year-old Anibal Hernandezsantana, was arrested at a residence in River Park.

A military court in Rostov-on-Don has sentenced Muscovite Dzhokhar Khadzhiev, who, according to security officials, attempted to join ISIS* militants in Syria in 2024.
The Southern District Military Court heard the case of 30-year-old Dzhokhar Khadzhiev in a single hearing. The Moscow resident was charged with preparation for participation in the activities of a terrorist organization (Part 1 of Article 30, Part 2 of Article 205.5 of the Russian Criminal Code).
According to the prosecution, in July 2024, Khadzhiev decided to join ISIS*, which is designated a terrorist organization by the Supreme Court of Russia. The case file alleges that Khadzhiev professed "ideas of radical Sunni Islam" and was motivated by "religious hostility toward other religions."
According to security officials, Khadzhiev contacted a representative of a terrorist organization and received instructions to travel to Syria via Turkey. "Upon arrival in Turkey, he is to be transported across the border and escorted to the terrorists' location," the court's official Telegram channel reported.
Khadzhiev purchased his own plane tickets but was unable to leave the country. FSB officers detained him at the Sochi airport. The court found the Moscow resident guilty and sentenced him to five years and six months in prison. Khadzhiev is to serve the first two and a half years of his sentence in prison, and the remainder in a maximum-security penal colony.
Dzhokhar Khadzhiev's sentence was handed down today, at the first and only hearing in the case. The case was filed for trial on September 1, according to the records of the Southern District Military Court. As of 7:10 p.m. Moscow time, Dzhokhar Khadzhiev's name is not on Rosfinmonitoring's list of terrorists and extremists. Caucasian Knot has not yet received any comment from Khadzhiev or his lawyer regarding the sentence or the prosecution's case.
The "Caucasian Knot" also reported that a 20-year-old native of Chechnya was arrested in Germany in February. According to German law enforcement, he intended to attack the Israeli embassy in Berlin and planned to join ISIS.

Spanish police clashed with Marseille fans ahead of the Champions League match between the French club and Real Madrid on Tuesday.
The confrontation began as the fans waited to get into Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium before the game.
Police in riot gear and horse-riding officers used batons to disperse the French supporters as they apparently tried to move out of the spot allocated for them as they waited outside the Bernabeu gates. A few thousand French fans were expected for the match.
The situation was controlled quickly, and the fans entered the stadium in time for the match.
PALESTINIAN FLAGS BANNED
Bernabeu security personnel did not allow fans to enter the stadium with Palestinian flags, enforcing a policy that was in place even before pro-Palestinian protests made headlines for disrupting the Spanish Vuelta cycling race this weekend. The flags were confiscated from fans who tried to enter with them.
The anti-Israel protests disrupted several stages of the three-week-long Vuelta.
Protesters, who demanded that team Israel Premier Tech be expelled from the Grand Tour event, threw barriers onto the road and clashed with police on Sunday to keep the final stage from being completed as originally planned.
Spain’s government has been a fierce critic of Israel’s 23-month war in Gaza, which was triggered by the Hamas terror group killing 1,200 people and kidnapping 251 during its October 7, 2023, onslaught in southern Israel.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar on Sunday called Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez a “disgrace to Spain” for what he characterized as the incitement of a mob against the bike race. He also noted the Spanish leader’s remark days earlier, “that he did not have an atomic bomb ‘to stop Israel.’”
The director of the Vuelta race defended his decision to keep an Israel-based team in the competition despite the anti-Israel protests, while Spanish opposition figures and Madrid’s conservative mayor rejected Sanchez’s endorsement of the protests, calling the chaos an “international embarrassment” and a sad day for the capital city.

The Paleostinian Authority has arrested a key suspect in an antisemitic attack on a Jewish restaurant in Gay Paree in which six people were killed in 1982, French prosecutors said on Friday.
The arrest of Hicham Harb, now 70, has not been reported by the PA’s official news agency.
The attack, in which six people were killed and 22 injured, was the deadliest antisemitic atrocity in La Belle France since World War II.
The six suspected attackers are believed to have been members of the Paleostinian terror group Abu Nidal at the time. Three of them are not known to have been detained.
Harb is suspected of leading the attackers in the gun assault on the Jo Goldenberg restaurant in Gay Paree’s Marais district, a historically Jewish quarter. He has been the subject of an international arrest warrant for 10 years.
The surprise announcement came as La Belle France gears up to formally recognize a Paleostinian state at the United Nations ...a formerly good idea gone bad... General Assembly on Monday, a move that has been welcomed by the Paleostinian Authority but bitterly denounced by Israel.
The office of the French anti-terror prosecutor said it was informed by Interpol of Harb’s arrest and welcomed "this major procedural breakthrough." It thanked the Paleostinian authorities for their cooperation.
French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the announcement, saying the suspect had been arrested in the West Bank.
"I welcome the excellent cooperation with the Paleostinian Authority," he said on X. "We are working together to ensure his swift extradition."
"This is another step forward for justice and truth. My thoughts are with all the families who have endured the pain of waiting for so long."
’OUR DETERMINATION’
The attack began around midday when a grenade was tossed into the dining room of the Gay Pareeian eatery.
The attackers then entered the restaurant, which had around 50 customers inside, and opened fire with Wz-63 Polish-made machine guns. They also shot at passers-by as they escaped.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot said he had met with the families of the 28 victims to inform them of the latest developments.
"I have emphasized our determination to see that justice is done," he said on X.
He said Harb’s arrest was "the result of the process" initiated by Macron, adding that the recognition of the Paleostinian state would enable La Belle France to request the suspect’s extradition.
Harb’s extradition "will allow the criminal court to conduct a full examination of the facts and get as close as possible to the truth about who was responsible for this attack," Romain Boulet, one of the lawyers representing the families of the victims, told AFP.
3 SUSPECTS STILL THOUGHT TO BE FREE IN THE PALESTINIAN TERRITORIES, JORDAN
Harb, whose real name is Mahmoud Khader Abed Adra, is suspected of having been a gunman and supervised the attack.
French authorities announced in 2015 — nearly 33 years after the attack — that international arrest warrants had been issued for Harb and five other suspects. In July, a French judge ordered a trial for them.
One of the defendants, Hazza Taha, was detained recently in Gay Paree. Another defendant, Walid Abdulrahman Abu Zayed, 66, had emigrated with his family to Norway and was extradited to La Belle France in 2020.
Abu Zayed’s lawyers, Bruno Gendrin and Romain Ruiz, said they see the arrest of Harb as proof that the investigation was not complete."
"As usual, the anti-terrorism courts wanted to rush things and we are now seeing the consequences," they told AFP in a statement. They plan to request the reopening of the judicial investigation.
Three other suspects in the 1982 attack are still thought to be on the lam.
Two of them are believed to be in either the Paleostinian territories or Jordan: Nabil Hassan Mahmoud Othmane, also known as Ibrahim Hamza, and Nizar Tawfiq Moussa Hamada, also known as Hani. Another suspect, Mohammed Souhair al-Abassi, also known as Amjad Atta, is in Jordan, where authorities have refused to extradite him.
The six suspects are thought to have been members of Abu Nidal, a terror group named for its late leader, whose real name was Sabri al-Banna.
The group has been blamed for nearly two dozen attacks that left at least 275 people dead, including assaults on El Al Israel Airlines ticket counters at the Rome and Vienna airports in 1985, in which 18 people were killed.
Abu Nidal himself was found dead in his Baghdad apartment in August 2002. Iraqi authorities said he died by suicide.

The Israeli military said Friday it had caught a Paleostinian terror cell in the Ramallah area of the West Bank that had been building rockets intended to be launched at Israeli targets.
The raid came after the military said troops last week found a crude rocket that a terror cell had launched from the Paleostinian town of Kafr Ni’ma as part of a test.
Overnight, IDF soldiers, Shin Bet officers, and members of the police counter-terror Yamam unit reached a building in the area to detain members of the cell, the military said.
The IDF said the forces opened fire on the building, including with shoulder-launched missiles, and three suspects emerged who were then detained and handed over to the Shin Bet for questioning.
Inside the building, the military said troops found dozens of rocket parts, including two completed rockets that did not yet have a warhead. The soldiers also found dozens of bombs and kaboom, alongside other evidence tying the cell members to the efforts to build and launch rockets.
The rockets and kaboom were destroyed, the IDF said.
The police published footage showing the Yamam officers raiding the building, while the army released a video showing the cache of rockets being destroyed.
At another location in the Ramallah area, the military said soldiers found a lathe used to build the rocket parts.
Footage released on Friday showed the rocket launch from Kafr Ni’ma a week prior.
The rocket was assessed to have flown several hundred meters, as part of a test carried out by the terror cell in the area, whose members were later detained.
In recent years, there have been several attempts by Paleostinian terror groups to develop and launch crude rockets from the West Bank at Israeli settlements and at Israel, though with little to no success.
Following the operation, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar said such terror efforts were proof of the "enormous danger" in establishing a Paleostinian state, as several Western states prepare to unilaterally recognize a Paleostinian state in the coming days at the United Nations ...an idea whose time has gone... Sa’ar wrote on X that the rockets were made to be launched "at communities in Judea and Samaria," using the biblical name for the West Bank. He accused the Paleostinian Authority of failing to combat terror.

Israel said on Thursday it had launched a fresh wave of airstrikes against Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon to prevent the terror group from rebuilding in the area.
Before the strikes, the IDF issued evacuation warnings for four sites in southern Lebanon, before later calling to clear the vicinity surrounding two additional buildings.
In the evacuation order, the IDF’s Arabic-language spokesman Col. Avichay Adraee said that the strikes had been ordered in response to Hezbollah’s “prohibited attempts to rebuild its activities in the area.”
He published maps of the targeted buildings, calling residents and those close by to evacuate “immediately and distance yourselves from them by no less than 500 meters.”
The strikes were carried out in two main waves following evacuation warnings to residents of Mays al-Jabal, Kfar Tebnit, Dibbin, Chehabiyeh, and Burj Qalaouiyah.
Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said roads leading out of Kfar Tebnit were full of people who had left their homes ahead of the attacks.
It said that the strikes had caused material damage to the targeted areas.
The IDF said later on Thursday that the strikes had targeted several weapon depots belonging to Hezbollah’s elite Radwan Force.
The Radwan force was previously tasked with invading Israel in a future war, and the IDF says the elite unit had advanced the terror group’s “Conquer the Galilee” plan for years, until the 2023-2024 war that saw most of Hezbollah’s leadership eliminated.
“The Hezbollah terror organization continues its attempts to restore terror infrastructure in southern Lebanon, especially the Radwan unit, with the aim of harming the State of Israel,” the military said in a statement.
The IDF said Hezbollah’s efforts to restore the Radwan Force were a violation of the ceasefire, and added that troops “have been operating over the past two years against the unit’s attempts to recover and rebuild its strength.”
Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the strikes in comments to Lebanon’s cabinet, and questioned Israel’s commitment to halting hostilities in the region, given the frequent strikes against what Israel says are Hezbollah targets violating the ceasefire in the country’s south.
