[FoxNews] Officials lost contact with aircraft near Joint Base Lewis-McChord Wednesday night
The U.S. Army Special Operations Command Public Affairs office told Fox News Digital the "aviation mishap" happened around 9 p.m. local time and four service members assigned to the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) were on board the MH-60 Black Hawk.
The crash happened in the Summit Lake area, according to a Facebook post from the Thurston County Sheriff's Office.
"We have been advised that the military lost contact with a helicopter in the area, and we are working closely with JBLM to deploy any resources needed to assist," the post said.
The conditions of the service members are unclear, as of Thursday night.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, according to the Army.
The base is about 10 miles south of Tacoma under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Joint Base Headquarters.

Four IDF soldiers were killed and three others were wounded in a roadside bomb attack in southern Gaza’s Rafah on Thursday morning, the military announced hours later.
The slain soldiers were named by the IDF as Maj. Omri Chai Ben Moshe, 26, from Tzafria; Lt. Eran Shelem, 23, from Ramat Yohanan; Lt. Eitan Avner Ben Itzhak, 22, from Har Bracha; and Lt. Ron Arieli, 20, from Hadera.
Their deaths on Thursday brought Israel’s toll in the ground offensive against Hamas in Gaza and in military operations along the border with the Strip to 469. The toll includes two police officers and three Defense Ministry civilian contractors.
All four of the slain soldiers served with the Bahad 1 officers’ school’s Dekel Battalion. Ben Moshe was a company commander, while the other three troops were cadets and posthumously promoted to lieutenant.
Before joining the officers’ course, Ben Moshe was a company commander in the Paratroopers Brigade; Shelem was a soldier in the elite Sayeret Matkal unit; Ben Itzhak served in the Commando Brigade; and Arieli served in the Golani Brigade.
According to an initial IDF probe, the incident took place during operations in Rafah’s Jenina neighborhood at around 9:30 a.m., as a D9 armored bulldozer was clearing a route while two Humvees drove behind it.
One of the Humvees then moved to the side of the road, where it was hit by an explosive device. The blast killed the four soldiers and wounded three others, including one seriously and two moderately.
The military was still investigating what type of explosive was used, how it was activated, and when it was placed there.
Images circulating on social media on Thursday showed the aftermath of the deadly roadside bomb attack and the heavily damaged IDF Humvee.
While Rafah has been largely cleared of Hamas operatives and terror infrastructure, the IDF believes there are several dozen operatives still there, mostly in the Jenina area. Earlier Thursday, before the attack, different troops of the Bahad 1 school had three engagements with terror operatives, according to the army.
Laie Defrin said that IDF forces “are still operating in the Jenina neighborhood and destroying terror infrastructure.”
Defrin added that there are “still underground infrastructures in the area that have yet to be destroyed, and our forces are working to do so.”
The four casualties announced on Thursday were the first Israeli fatalities in Gaza since four soldiers were killed 10 days ago in a Hamas attack on the outskirts of Gaza City.
Since then, the IDF launched a major ground offensive in Gaza City at the beginning of the week, moving ahead with a plan to conquer the city in the Strip’s north after weeks of preparation.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said Tuesday that “our aim is to deepen the blows to Hamas until its defeat.”
He asserted that Hamas had been dealt severe blows: “We have defeated the main part of its military power, and now we are deepening the achievements that will allow us to bring the end of the war closer.”
The war began when Hamas-led terrorists invaded southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages to Gaza. Terror groups are still holding 47 of them captive in Gaza, including the bodies of at least 25 confirmed dead by Israeli authorities.
The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry says more than 65,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the fighting so far, though the toll cannot be verified and does not differentiate between civilians and fighters.
Israel says it had killed over 22,000 combatants in battle as of August and another 1,600 terrorists inside Israel during the October 7 onslaught. Israel says it seeks to minimize civilian fatalities and stresses that Hamas uses Gaza’s civilians as human shields, fighting from civilian areas, including homes, hospitals, schools, and mosques.

Two Israeli soldiers were killed in a shooting and stabbing attack near Allenby Crossing between the West Bank and Jordan on Thursday. The assailant was a Jordanian who had been driving a humanitarian aid truck headed for the Gaza Strip.
The perpetrator arrived at Allenby Crossing from the Jordanian side at around 3 p.m., driving a truck transporting humanitarian aid intended for the Gaza Strip. Upon his arrival, he opened fire at soldiers at the crossing with a handgun, before the truck could be inspected, a preliminary military investigation found.
He then got out of the truck and, after his gun apparently jammed, stabbed the two soldiers repeatedly until security guards at the crossing opened fire at him, killing him.
The slain soldiers were named as: Lt. Col. (res.) Yitzhak Harosh, 68, a reservist in the Civil Administration, from Jerusalem, and Sgt. Oran Hershko, 20, a liaison officer with foreign forces in the IDF’s Tevel international cooperation unit, from Tel Mond.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that security forces had “neutralized the terrorist” at the scene of the attack, adding that troops were carrying out scans in the area for additional suspects and briefly encircled the nearby West Bank town of Jericho. The IDF lifted its partial closure on the city after an hour.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed that the attacker was a citizen of Jordan, and blamed the assault on Jordanian incitement.
“Israel facilitates humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the terrorists exploit it to murder Israelis,” wrote the Foreign Ministry.
“A Jordanian who was supposed to drive a humanitarian aid truck to Gaza, murdered two Israelis at the Allenby border crossing,” the ministry wrote on X, using uncharacteristically pugnacious language. “This is yet another result of the vile incitement in Jordan. This is the result of the echoing of Hamas’s campaign of lies.”
Across the border, Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said Jordan was monitoring reports of a security incident at the Allenby Crossing.
In a statement later on Thursday evening, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry announced that the country’s security services had launched an investigation into “the shooting incident” on the Israeli side of the order crossing.
The foreign ministry said Jordan “condemned and rejected” the attack “as a violation of international law, Jordan’s interests, and its ability to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
Sharing more details about the assailant, the statement named him as Abd al-Mutalib al-Qaisi, a 57-year-old who had started working as a truck driver distributing aid to Gaza just three months ago.
No terror group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
According to Israel’s Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories, since the beginning of the war in Gaza in October 2023, nearly 10,000 trucks of aid, or over 144,000 tons, have been transferred to the Gaza Strip from Jordan using land crossings with Israel and the West Bank. The total represents some 7% of all aid deliveries.
An Israeli security source told Kan news that the deadly attack would likely interfere with Gaza aid delivery schedules, as the Israeli side of Allenby Crossing, as well as the route from the crossing to the Gaza border, would be closed for an unspecified period of time.
The IDF confirmed as much, saying on Thursday evening that it was recommending to the country’s political leadership to temporarily halt the transport of Gaza-bound aid through the Allenby Crossing.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir issued the recommendation following consultations with COGAT chief Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian and Central Command chief Maj. Gen. Avi Bluth, the military said.
The aid coming through the border crossing should be halted until an investigation is completed and the inspection procedures for Jordanian drivers are updated, they recommended.
Aid will continue entering the Gaza Strip via other routes, a military official said, amid the rapidly expanding Israeli offensive in Gaza City, which has left tens of thousands of Palestinians fleeing to the south of the Strip.
The Allenby Bridge Crossing is the West Bank’s sole crossing with Jordan.
