[IsraelTimes] A gut-wrenching new film about a five-year-old girl allegedly killed by Israeli forces in Gaza last year was given a 23-minute standing ovation after its premiere at the star-studded Venice Film Festival.
“The Voice of Hind Rajab,” a docu-drama about events from January 2024, left much of the audience and many journalists sobbing as it screened for the first time.
Franco-Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania and her cast, all dressed in black, were also in tears as they soaked in applause, cheers and shouts of “Free Palestine! at the 1,032-seat main festival cinema.
“We see that the narrative all around the world is that those dying in Gaza are collateral damage, in the media,” Ben Hania tells journalists ahead of the premiere.
“And I think this is so dehumanizing, and that’s why cinema, art and every kind of expression is very important to give those people a voice and face.”
Her film tells the story of Hind Rajab Hamada who was fleeing the Israeli military in Gaza City with six relatives last year when their car came under fire.
The sole survivor, her desperate calls with the Red Crescent rescue service — which were recorded and released — caused international outrage.
“The Voice of Hind Rajab” has plenty of famous names attached as executive producers — from actors Joaquin Phoenix, who attended the premiere, and Brad Pitt to Oscar-winning directors Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”) and Mexico’s Alfonso Cuaron (“Roma”).
“I’m very happy, and I never in my life thought that could be possible,” Ben Hania said of her A-list backers.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society has accused Israel of deliberately targeting the ambulance it sent to rescue Rajab.
The Israel Defense Forces said, some weeks after Rajab’s death, that an initial investigation suggested no troops were in the area when she was killed.
A Washington Post report published after the IDF’s statement found that Israeli armored vehicles were, in fact, operating in the area at the time, and that the gunfire heard in the Red Crescent recordings was consistent with IDF weapons.

"The comments attributed to Netanyahu regarding the uprooting of Paleostinians from their land, including through the Rafah Crossing, are an attempt to prolong the escalation and instability, and avoid confronting the consequences of Israeli violations in Gaza," the Egyptian statement said.
In response, Netanyahu’s office said the prime minister was "speaking about the free will of every single person in choosing where to live. That’s a basic human right at any time — especially wartime," read the statement.
Also Friday, Egypt’s foreign minister told news hounds in Cyprus that Egypt will not tolerate the mass displacement of Paleostinians and repeated the charge that Israel is committing genocide.
"Displacement is not an option and it is a red line for Egypt and we will not allow it to happen," Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said.
"Displacement means liquidation and the end of the Paleostinian cause and there is no legal or moral or ethical ground to evict people from their homeland," he added.
"What is happening on the ground is far beyond the imagination. There is a genocide in motion there, mass killing of civilians, artificial starvation created by the Israelis," Cairo’s top diplomat added.

Israel adamantly rejects the accusations that it is causing starvation in Gaza and committing a genocide there, saying it makes efforts to facilitate humanitarian assistance and to avoid civilian casualties. It blames Hamas for fighting among civilian populations and accuses it of stealing aid.
Speaking with "Abu Ali Express," Netanyahu had said half of the Gaza Strip’s residents want to leave the devastated territory, a claim roughly borne out by a May survey.
"I can open the [Rafah] crossing for them, but they’ll be blocked... immediately by Egypt," said Netanyahu. "We’re not seeking to expel [Paleostinians], but to lock them in? By force? All the human rights ...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty... warriors — where are you?"
"When it comes to something that serves Israel, there are no human rights. Even when it’s about giving the basic right to every Paleostinian, to leave," he said.
Israel and Egypt have imposed varying degrees of blockade on Gaza since Hamas seized power from rival Paleostinian forces in 2007 in a violent mostly peaceful coup. Israel says it is necessary to limit Hamas’s ability to smuggle in arms with which to attack the Jewish state. Critics of the blockade say it amounts to collective punishment of Gaza’s roughly 2 million Paleostinians.
To avoid a surge in refugees, Egypt closed its border with Gaza after Israel seized the Gaza side of the Rafah border crossing last year, seven months into the war sparked on October 7, 2023, when Hamas stormed southern Israel to kill some 1,200 people and take 251 hostages. Israel said it was necessary for it to control the Egypt-Gaza border because Hamas was smuggling weapons into the Strip.
Following the outbreak of the war, Egypt constructed a concrete border wall that reaches six meters into the ground and is topped with barbed wire. Egypt has also built berms and enhanced surveillance at border posts, security sources said.
As Israel launches a new offensive to capture Gaza City, Egypt has again apparently bolstered its forces along its border with Gaza due to concerns that Paleostinians will try to flee to Sinai.

[IsraelTimes] President Isaac Herzog is due to travel to the UK next week, according to an unconfirmed report published by The Guardian.
According to the report, the visit will be a controversial one, as Labour Party lawmakers in the UK are urging Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other members of government to avoid meeting with Herzog, due to the ongoing war in Gaza.
No meetings between Herzog and any government ministers have been confirmed as of yet, the Guardian reports, but it cites a source familiar with the matter as saying that no appointments with ministers will be confirmed until next week.
Israel has not confirmed whether Herzog will be visiting the UK next week.
Herzog’s reported visit, which the newspaper says will take place on Wednesday and Thursday next week, has provoked mixed reactions, with some Labour Members of Parliament declaring that Starmer must not meet with the Israeli president, and others seeing it as a chance for dialogue and diplomatic breakthroughs regarding the war in Gaza.
Labour MP John McDonnell, the former shadow chancellor of the exchequer, tells British news outlets that Herzog should be prevented from entering the country altogether, and that Starmer is “shaming” the UK by “inviting” Herzog.
It is not clear, however, if Herzog’s reported visit comes at Starmer’s invitation.
“Herzog is the mouthpiece of the IDF butchers and should never be allowed near our country,” says McDonnell.
Labour MP Emily Thornberry, who chairs the UK’s Foreign Affairs Committee, takes a different approach, however, telling the Guardian that “efforts should be made to engage” with Herzog, who is seen by many as a more moderate figure than Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“The only solution to this is through politics,” says Thornberry of the war in Gaza and the wider Israeli-Palestinian conflict, adding that Herzog is “easier to talk to than many in the extreme right-wing government in Israel.”

[IsraelTimes] British authorities have charged six people for participating in meetings to plan a demonstration in support of the banned group Palestine Action, prosecutors say.
The six, aged from 26 to 62, are charged “with various offenses of encouraging support for a proscribed terrorist organization,” the Crown Prosecution Service says in a statement.
They were placed in detention and are due to appear in court on Thursday. They risk up to 14 years in prison.
Palestine Action was designated a terrorist organization and banned in July after vandalism at a Royal Air Force base.
The charges result from 13 online meetings they attended to prepare for several protests over the summer.
During an online press conference Wednesday, representatives of the group Defend Our Juries, to which the arrested individuals belonged, confirmed that demonstrations would go ahead on Saturday in London, Derry in Northern Ireland, and Edinburgh in Scotland.

In an August Facebook post, Shabazz, who is an attorney and one of the leading figures resisting the Trump administration's crackdown, called on gang members to come to a ceasefire and "see the real enemy."
"We are calling on all GANG MEMBERS and hardcore men in the community to a CEASE FIRE against each other; and to see the real enemy; and now come to the table. We are the men you can trust."
Shabazz is the former chairman of the New Black Panther Party and founder of Black Lawyers for Justice, a law firm that has pledged to sue National Guard troops and officers from the Washington Metropolitan Police for "illegal activities" participating in the Trump administration’s crackdown, according to local outlet ABC 7 News.
The outlet reported Shabazz claiming that "the Constitutional rights and human rights of D.C. residents are being routinely violated by National Guard and MPD officers seeking to carry out President Trump’s illegal orders."
"The 4th Amendment is being trampled upon daily at these illegal checkpoints and other random locations by these rogue guardsmen and officers. Black Lawyers for Justice is calling on the public to step forward and seek legal help," the outlet reported Shabazz saying.
According to another Facebook post, Shabazz is holding a "legal rights/community meeting on the National Guard" in D.C. on Thursday evening.
"Tonight's Meeting at the Anacostia Library is Tactical," Shabazz wrote on Facebook Thursday. "We must have a United Front to meet the threat in DC and Maryland and we need Allies and Leaders with the skills to handle this threat."
In another Thursday post, Shabazz expressed disdain over an unidentified group allegedly calling on him to "meet with Donald Trump or his officials." His post continued by quoting the Bible, which said, "Get Thee Behind me Satan," adding that the meeting "never will happen." Shabazz has been vocal about his opposition to Trump on social media, accusing him of "actively deceiving, bullying and Oppressing people and nations on multiple fronts."
Shabazz also called for Fruit of Islam (FOI), the paramilitary wing of notorious antisemite Louis Farrakhan's Nation of Islam, and other controversial Black groups to be the groups that the Black community leans on for security versus National Guard coming into D.C.
Shabazz has been labeled by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) as a "racist black nationalist with a long, well-documented history of violently anti-Semitic remarks and accusations about the inherent evil of white people."
SPLC's website lists several quotes uttered by Shabazz, including remarks from a 2002 speech in Washington, D.C., where he reportedly said, "Kill every god---- Zionist in Israel! God---- little babies, god---- old ladies! Blow up Zionist supermarkets!" In another speech from the early 2000s, he also pushed antisemitic tropes about "Zionists" controlling the media and foreign policy.
Through the years, he has been known to associate with other notorious antisemites such as Farrakhan. He posted a photo with Farrakhan in 2020 with the caption, "I HAVE WALKED WITH THE BEST," and called the Nation of Islam leader "one of the great influences in my life."
In 2024, Shabazz posted a photo of himself and former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad from 2012 and said his "views are shaped by my experiences." He said he was invited by a now-deceased journalist for the Nation of Islam's publication and said Farrakhan was in attendance with dozens of imams. Ahmadinejad has repeatedly called Israel an "illegitimate regime" and has called for its "elimination."
[IsraelTimes] The suspect accused of gunning down two Israeli embassy staffers outside a Washington museum in what US authorities have called an anti-Israel, antisemitic hate crime pleads not guilty to a raft of criminal charges.
Elias Rodriguez, 31, of Chicago, is facing nine federal charges, including murder of a foreign official and perpetrating a hate crime resulting in death.
US prosecutors have alleged that Rodriguez was motivated by hatred of Israel when he fatally shot Yaron Lischinsky, 30, and Sarah Lynn Milgrim, 26, as they were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum in downtown Washington on May 21.
Rodriguez, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, answered “yes” when Washington-based US District Judge Randolph Moss asked if he was satisfied with his legal representation. His lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf during a brief hearing.
The indictment cites statements Rodriguez allegedly made online prior to the shooting, including a call to “vaporize every Israeli 18 and above.” Rodriguez told police at the scene, “I did it for Palestine” and “I did it for Gaza” and posted an online manifesto declaring that perpetrators and abettors of Israel’s military actions in Gaza had “forfeited their humanity,” according to court documents.
The indictment includes findings that would make Rodriguez eligible for the death penalty if convicted, the start of what would likely be a years-long process.
President Donald Trump’s administration has touted the case and the hate crime charges as part of its larger effort to confront antisemitism, which has also included a series of civil rights investigations into colleges and universities and attempts to deport some pro-Palestinian student activists.
Lischinsky, a research assistant in the embassy’s political section, and Milgrim, a member of the embassy’s administrative staff, were about to be engaged at the time of the shooting. They were attending an event for young diplomats hosted by the American Jewish Committee, an advocacy group that fights antisemitism and supports Israel.

An attorney representing the Department of Homeland Security and ICE has notified high-profile illegal immigrant Kilmar Abrego Garcia that he will be deported to the tiny African nation Eswatini, after the alleged gang member’s lawyers said he fears persecution in 22 other countries.
According to a removal notice shared with Fox News by ICE sources, the agency notified Abrego Garcia that in light of his claims of fear of persecution or torture in nearly two dozen other countries, "we hereby notify you that your new country of removal is Eswatini, Africa."
Eswatani used to be known as the [Kingdom of] Swaziland, located in South Africa. It should be interesting for Mr. Abrego Garcia.
"Dear Mr. Abrego Garcia," the notice reads, "As you know, the United States seeks to remove you from the United States based on your final order of removal. Currently, you are designated to be removed to Uganda. Your attorney has informed us, however, that you fear persecution or torture in Uganda."
The ICE notice states, "That claim of fear is hard to take seriously, especially given that you have claimed (through your attorneys) that you fear persecution or torture in at least 22 different countries."
The notice lists 22 countries, including El Salvador, Uganda and twenty Latin American countries.
"Nonetheless," the notice states, "we hereby notify you that your new country of removal is Eswatini, Africa."
DHS also reposted a copy of the notification on its official X account with the caption, "Homie is afraid of the entire western hemisphere."
Following his March deportation to his home country of El Salvador, Abrego Garcia has become a cause célèbres for many Democrats charging the Trump administration of denying immigrants their due process. He was returned to the U.S. in June and is currently standing trial for human smuggling related to a 2022 traffic stop in Tennessee in which he was found transporting several non-citizens across the country.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has also alleged that Abrego Garcia is a member of the Salvadoran MS-13 as well as a "human trafficker, serial domestic abuser, and child predator."
He is currently being kept at an immigration detention center in Virginia while his case is ongoing after U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis, an Obama appointee, ruled to temporarily block Abrego Garcia’s deportation to Uganda.
Chris Newman, an attorney for Abrego Garcia’s family, has categorically denied DHS' allegations, telling Fox News Digital, "None of those things are true, full stop."
He said that "in essence" what the Trump administration has done "is to use the highest office in the land to blackmail an innocent man into sacrificing his constitutional rights."

The Hamas terror group on Friday released a propaganda video showing hostages Alon Ohel and Guy Gilboa-Dalal, who have spent 700 days in the terror group’s captivity since their abduction on October 7, 2023.
The video was released as a major new Israeli offensive looms in Gaza City — where Gilboa-Dalal says in the clip that he is located.
The footage released by Hamas on Friday was the first time Ohel has been seen in a video since he, Gilboa-Dalal and 249 others were taken hostage during the Hamas-led October 7, 2023, attack on Israel.
Defense officials have warned that the takeover operation will put the hostages at greater danger, and the Hostages and Missing Families Forum on Friday urged the government to secure a deal for the captives’ release rather than go forward with the new campaign.
Gilboa-Dalal’s family approved a 28-second clip from the longer video for publication, in which he says the date is August 28, 2025, and that he is being held by Hamas’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades in Gaza City.
Gilboa-Dalal is shown with short hair, wearing a dark blue shirt, and displaying expressions of distress, placing his face in his hands. In part of the video, he appears to be sitting in the backseat of a car aboveground.
In remarks likely dictated to him by his captors, he pleads for his release.
“This is all we want, we just want it to end,” he says. “We want to return to our families. Please bring us back.”
