[PJMedia] After a contentious hearing in which Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle failed to answer some of the most basic questions surrounding the failed assassination attempt on Donald Trump on July 13, the House Oversight Committee called on Cheatle to resign.
Committee Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.) and Ranking Member Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) signed a letter, which the committee sent to Cheatle and released on social media. It’s an impressive show of bipartisanship.
The letter reads:
Director Cheatle: On July 13, 2024, the United States Secret Service under your leadership failed to protect former President Donald Trump from an assassination attempt that took the life of Corey Comperatore and seriously injured at least two other people.
Today, you failed to provide answers to basic questions regarding that stunning operational failure and to reassure the American people that the Secret Service has learned its lessons and begun to correct its systemic blunders and failures. In the middle of a presidential election, the Committee and the American people demand serious institutional accountability and transparency that you are not providing. We call on you to resign as Director as a first step to allowing new leadership to swiftly address this crisis and rebuild the trust of a truly concerned Congress and the American people.

This bipartisan call for Cheatle to resign her post is especially remarkable after what we saw from some Democrats during the hearing. This morning, I wrote about how Raskin used his time at the beginning of the hearing to call for gun control.
He wasn’t the only one. Reps. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Jasmine Crockett (D-Tenn.) spewed even more egregious gun-grabbing nonsense.
Rep. Ayanna Presley (D-Mass.) didn’t ask Cheatle any questions; instead, she accused Republicans of being “racist” and “sexist” because they dared question diversity efforts within the Secret Service.
At this point, there’s nothing else Cheatle can do but resign. Whether she will remains to be seen, but it’s impressive to see bipartisan calls for her to resign after such ridiculous behavior from Democrats on the committee.

Didn't watch the hearing yet. All the accepting responsibility stuff is nice, but I am more interested in what went wrong and what the Secret Service would do next time to make sure the person they are guarding does not get shot in head. When you f**k up this badly, you should learn something from it.
Maybe the Secret Service should just go back to chasing counterfeiters.

Agents charged with protecting the former president requested magnetometers and more agents to screen attendees at sporting events and other large public gatherings Trump attended, as well as additional snipers and specialty teams at other outdoor events, said the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive security discussions. The requests, which have not been previously reported, were sometimes denied by senior officials at the agency, who cited various reasons, including a lack of resources at an agency that has long struggled with staffing shortages, they said.
Those rejections — in response to requests that were several times made in writing — led to long-standing tensions that pitted Trump, his top aides and his security detail against Secret Service leadership, as Trump advisers privately fretted that the vaunted security agency was not doing enough to protect the former president.
The Secret Service, after initially denying turning down requests for additional security, is now acknowledging some may have been rejected. After WaPo confronted Guglielmi, he said that the agency 'had learned new information indicating the agency’s headquarters may have in fact denied some requests for additional security from Trump’s detail," something he should have probably checked before be lied.

the reports I read said "foreign accounts", with the implication from context that they were media accounts - this is the first I heard about them being bank accounts and considering the source, the 3 day year rule is in effect.

Overseas bank accounts? From previous reports, the 3 accounts sounded like encrypted Telegram chat accounts. Not at all the same thing as banking.
Encrypted overseas bank accounts has a nice scary sound, but on-line banking uses encryption, especially when the traffic goes through gawd knows whose servers.
tl;dr: I am curious whether "bank accounts" is
1) a newly discovered detail
2) just media chaff to confuse the situation.

In a filing with the Federal Election Commission, the campaign asked to rename itself to "Harris for President" and designated the Harris Victory Fund and the Harris Action Fund as its joint fundraising committees.
"Vice President Harris is now a candidate for United States President in the 2024 election and will henceforth be conducting campaign activities only in pursuit of that office. This committee’s Statement of Organization and the Statement of Candidacy are being amended accordingly," her team wrote in a notice.
