Democratic National Committee employees were mercilessly mocked this week after news came out that staffers were very unhappy with a recent directive from DNC Chairman Ken Martin to end remote work for employees who will now be required to show up to the office five days a week.
Leadership of the union representing DNC employees put out a statement following news of the new directive, describing it as "callous." Reports from those on the staff-wide call also described an immediate flurry of thumbs-down emojis and other signs of anger upon news of the new requirement.
"It was shocking to see the DNC chair disregard staff’s valid concerns on today’s team call," they wrote. "D.N.C. staff worked extremely hard to support historic wins for Democrats up and down the ballot last Tuesday, and this change feels especially callous considering the current economic conditions created by the Trump administration." Martin reportedly told employees that if they don't like the new policy, they should go find a job elsewhere.
And Martin wasn't the only Democrat who had some harsh and pointed words for the Democratic Party staffers. Neera Tanden, former President Joe Biden's domestic policy advisor, had a similar message for DNC staffers, suggesting there were many eager folks waiting in line who would likely be more than willing to go into the office.
“If you think democracy is on the line – working in the office is not a big ask," Tanden wrote in a post on X. "And there are plenty of other people willing to step up. Get yourselves together people."
A left-wing group, the Center for New Liberalism, echoed the view that the staffers "should look elsewhere" if working from home is a "must-have."
"When you accept a job on a campaign, or with an org like the DNC, DCCC, etc, your single purpose is to win the election. It is a demanding job that requires long hours & sacrifices," the group wrote on X. "The other part of this is that I suspect [work from home] staff are probably losing opportunities for themselves by not being in the office. Campaigns require a lot of personal sacrifice, but the people who are good at their job and work to make themselves noticed in the office usually tend to go on to do big things!"
One Florida-based Democratic strategist, Steve Schale, who led Barack Obama's statewide efforts in Florida in 2008 and returned to help his campaign in 2012, said the DNC should implement a "requirement" to ensure those who want to work at the DNC really have what it takes.
"There should be a requirement that to work at the DNC that you’ve done at least two cycles on an actual battleground campaign, where terms like flex hours & hybrid work don’t exist," Schale wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Republicans did not spare the opportunity to slam Democratic Party staffers as well.
"You can't make this up -- the DNC union is pissed that the Chairman is calling staff back into the office 5 days a week," former Trump White House press secretary, Sean Spicer, said after learning of the anger. GOP strategist, Matt Gorman, quipped that the image of DNC staffers logging onto a Zoom call in their pajamas amid all the chaos of Biden's re-election "is hilarious."
"The best part is that they still get two full months before they actually have to get out of bed 5 days week," GOP national press secretary Kiersten Pels said. "Is this a political committee or a daycare?"
Martin reportedly told his employees that the work-from-home policy the DNC implemented during COVID was never meant to be permanent, describing it as a "Band-Aid" that has long needed to be ripped off. He did say that remote work would still be allowed on a case-by-case basis, however.

And yes, I work remotely. I've got co-workers in at least 5 states and multiple time zones and I've never met my boss in person.

Trump made his initial comments on his Truth Social account, which were later reposted by the White House X account.
[GEO.TV] Britannia's BBC apologised to Donald Trump ...Perhaps no man has ever had as much fun being president of the US... on Thursday for editing a speech to make it look like he had advocated violence, seeking to ward off the US president's threat of legal action, but the broadcaster rejected the basis for a defamation claim.
In a statement, the BBC said its chair Samir Shah sent a personal letter to the White House making clear to Trump that he and the corporation were "sorry" for the edit, adding that the broadcaster has no plans to rebroadcast the Panorama documentary on any of its platforms.
"While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim," the BBC said.
The leaking of internal accusations of bias at the BBC, including in the way it edited a 2021 speech by Trump on the day his supporters overran the Capitol, has forced its top two leaders to quit and for Trump to threaten a $1 billion lawsuit.
That puts the BBC at risk of having to use money paid by its viewers to compensate the US president for an error of its own making, handing more ammunition to critics at a time when growing numbers are cancelling their annual licence fee payment.
That’s nice. But it turns out there’s more, according to the Telegraph, via Yahoo:
BBC Newsnight also doctored footage of a Donald Trump speech and ignored concerns that were raised about it, The Telegraph can reveal.
Spliced footage of the speech, which aired in an episode in 2022, made it appear that Mr Trump was encouraging his supporters to riot.
The edit was similar to a version aired in a Panorama documentary that was broadcast last year.
After The Telegraph exposed the doctored Panorama footage and other concerns about bias at the corporation, Tim Davie, the director-general, and Deborah Turness, the chief executive of BBC News, both resigned.
Mr Trump has threatened to sue the BBC for as much as $1bn (£760m) over the Panorama edit unless it apologises, retracts the footage and offers compensation by Friday.
In response to the latest revelations, a spokesman for his legal team said it was “now clear that BBC engaged in a pattern of defamation against President Trump”.
As in some of the American cases, lawyers said, Mr. Trump would face formidable hurdles if a suit ever went to trial. He would have to persuade a [British] court that a misleadingly edited clip in a BBC documentary caused him to “suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm,” as his lawyer claimed in a letter to the BBC on Sunday.

...Apparently, there's a statute of limitations issue - the last chance to hit this is British courts was about a month ago. the chances of that being overturned are slim at best.
On the other hand, the Beeb does have property and personnel here in the US. File here and ask that the personnel be PNG'd and the property seized.

Justice Department officials tied to special counsel Jack Smith’s team have been linked to the blocking of an FBI inquiry into the Clinton campaign’s 2016 funding of the Steele Dossier, with this being just the latest revelation about Smith as the Trump Justice Department builds a grand conspiracy case alleging years of anti-Trump lawfare.
Emails released Thursday appear to show the officials shut down a potential FBI investigation tied to possible campaign finance violations carried out by Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign when it used cutouts to fund the opposition research firm Fusion GPS and British ex-spy Christopher Steele’s anti-Trump dossier. Two officials tied to Smith’s anti-Trump investigation were linked to the decision by the FBI not to pursue the alleged campaign finance wrongdoing by Clinton’s campaign.
The decision by the Trump DOJ and FBI to open a probe that treats the last decade of political weaponization of law enforcement and intelligence agencies as an ongoing criminal conspiracy will likely be aided by the wave of recently-released information obtained by congressional investigators.
Just the News reported this summer that the FBI quietly launched an investigation into a decade of Democratic Party and "deep-state" efforts ranging from ginning up the Trump-Russia collusion to examining Smith's pursuit of Trump. The inquiry is allegedly looking into whether there was a criminal conspiracy to influence three consecutive presidential elections to the benefit of Democrats and the detriment of Trump.
Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland to helm the Biden Justice Department’s investigations of former President Donald Trump. Recently-declassified revelations related to the Arctic Frost inquiry chronicle the expansive lawfare efforts against Trump and MAGA world, as criminal inquiries – which would soon lead to criminal charges – spun into high gear in 2022 as Trump leaned toward running for president again.
Years before Garland picked him to lead the Biden DOJ’s anti-Trump legal efforts, Smith had injected the Justice Department’s public integrity unit — which he led at the time — into what would become an IRS scandal involving Lois Lerner and the targeting of conservative non-profit groups.
Smith led the Public Integrity Section in the nation’s capital from 2010 until early 2015, leading a team of 30 prosecutors in conducting public corruption cases throughout the United States. Lerner, the director of the Exempt Organizations Unit of the IRS, in 2013 helped lead an agency effort targeting conservative Tea Party groups and other similar nonprofits.
Smith’s push for DOJ officials to reach out to Lerner and the IRS and for the DOJ to get involved seemed to be the impetus behind the IRS soon sending the FBI reams of U.S. nonprofit tax records, although the DOJ did not ultimately pursue prosecutions against the conservative groups.
Also appearing to tie many strands together is the bureau’s recent discovery of a host of secret investigative documents allegedly stashed in “burn bags” inside a classified space at FBI headquarters. The bureau said in court filings linked to its prosecution of fired FBI Director James Comey that “among the records found were many related to the FBI’s Mar-a-Lago search, the January 6 Capitol breach, the Crossfire Hurricane investigation and a copy of the Classified Appendix to the John Durham Special Counsel investigation.”

[Breitbart] The Center to Advance Security in America (CASA) has filed a lawsuit against the government to secure records that would expose the millions of American taxpayer dollars that went to non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to resettle migrants across the United States under former President Joe Biden, Breitbart News has exclusively learned.
“CASA filed this lawsuit to provide maximum transparency to the Biden administration’s outrageous giveaway of millions of taxpayer dollars to non-governmental organizations that facilitated illegal immigration,” CASA Director James Fitzpatrick told Breitbart News in a statement.
The lawsuit seeks Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) records for fiscal years 2023 and 2024 regarding the agency’s grants to NGOs for the sole purpose of resettling migrants, apprehended at the southern border, in American communities.
The records, the lawsuit states, would show the total taxpayer funds that went to such NGOs to assist migrants with housing costs, school costs, medical treatments, and legal services, among other benefits.
CASA executives told Breitbart News that in Fiscal Year 2022, for instance, NGOs secured $6.4 billion in American taxpayer dollars to offer such benefits to migrants caught at the border.
“The release of these documents is in the public interest because it will provide increased transparency to understand the [HHS’s] decisions and communications regarding federal funds provided to non-governmental entities,” the lawsuit states.
As Breitbart News detailed throughout the Biden years, the administration sent millions of dollars in taxpayer money every quarter to NGOs and sanctuary jurisdictions that vowed to help resettle migrants in American communities.
Fitzpatrick said the American people ought to have such records to better understand what exactly the Biden administration did over the course of four years.
“The American public deserves to know every organization that received these funds so they can see for themselves the extremes the Biden administration went to to ensure government money went to as many organizations as possible who facilitated, promoted, and furthered Biden’s pursuit for a reckless open border,” Fitzpatrick said.
The case is CASA v. HHS in the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Incumbent Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell's attempt to win re-election fell short after a razor-thin loss to local progressive activist and community organizer Katie Wilson.
Harrell conceded Thursday as the vote totals all but guaranteed a win for Wilson, who, like Zohran Mamdani, identifies as a democratic socialist. Wilson has become the latest self-described socialist to win elected office, but unlike many of the other socialist candidates who won their elections last week, but similar to Mamdani, Wilson will end up in a post charged with leading one of the country's largest metropolitan areas.
Wilson beat Harrell by less than 2,000 votes, according to the latest tally on the King County Elections website that was updated Wednesday.
"I just spoke with Mayor-elect Katie Wilson to congratulate her on a hard fought victory," Harrell said at the top of his speech, adding that his team was standing by to help with the transition "without hesitation."
"I feel very good about that conversation," Harrell said of the phone call. "And I feel very good about the future of this city, of this country still."
Wilson, perceived as the less experienced candidate, operates a small nonprofit called the Transit Riders Union. Her work has included advocating for policies around minimum wage increases, better access to public transit and affordable housing.
Prior to her establishment of the Transit Riders Union in 2011, Wilson worked several jobs in various unrelated industries, including as a barista, boatyard worker, apartment manager, lab technician, baker, construction worker and legal assistant.
Wilson has credited her parents with helping her run her campaign for mayor.
"They send me a check periodically to help with the child care expenses," Wilson told Seattle's PubliCola, noting day care for her kids cost about $2,200 per month. Wilson did not share precisely how much her parents contribute, pointing out that she does not keep track. However, when pressed for more details, Wilson reportedly said the money comes in every few months.
"Before I decided to run for office, my husband and I were just kind of juggling our kid back and forth," Wilson continued about the child care costs her parents assist with. "We didn't have her in day care because it's so expensive. But then, when I decided to run, we're like, we really need child care."
Meanwhile, prior to moving to Seattle in 2004, Wilson lived in upstate New York. After graduating from high school in Binghamton, Wilson studied physics and philosophy at Oxford University, thanks to financial assistance from her parents living in New York.
Wilson ultimately left Oxford debt-free, which she credits to her parents. However, she also left without a degree, dropping out just six weeks before her graduation.

...Apparently her time at Oxford didn't do her much good; yesterday she announced that she would not allow grocery stores in Seattle to close.
Now, you and I both know that she can't do that. On the other hand, it looks like she doesn't know she can't do that, and I fully expect she'll try - her and Mandani both, I think.
Just as a cautionary tale, in the early 90s the busing issue in Cleveland had destroyed the school system and sent families fleeing elsewhere. But the Federal judge who ran things wasn't going to allow free will to ruin his plans - he was working on a ruling that would have required families with kids in the CPS to get his permission before moving out of the city. The only thing that stopped that particular horror was his sudden death, and another judge being put in charge of the desegregation plans.
Wilson and Mandami consider themselves duly elected rulers - not mayors, not public servants, and they consider this their divine right; not that they would acknowledge anything of the divine. They will rule as they see fit, and they definitely don't care about little details like the Constitution. And they will decree, with all the vigor and determination of a Czar, that what they do is legal, necessary, and unquestionable.

Yes she can't legally prohibit business closures.
However, Seattle can create a sea of nuisance requirements for businesses, for example, requiring 60 day notice before closures, requiring efforts to recruit buyers, etc. Unfortunately, a fair number of cities have these.

Leaving aside their ideological bent, neither of these folks (Mamdani and Wilson) has ever signed the front of a paycheck. Yet they're supposed to have the managerial skills to run two very complex organizations (NYC and Seattle.) Maybe start out with a lemonade stand first.
