This is roughly how we got here: The communist Tigray People’s Liberation Front controlled Ethiopia’s government from 1989 to 2019, having overthrown the evil Mengistu, when they made the mistake of putting one of their own ministers, Abiy Ahmed — who is not Tigrayan — in as prime minister. "The plot was contained and does not pose a current threat," the US official said in a statement to news hounds on condition of anonymity. "This is just the latest in a long history of Iran’s global lethal targeting of diplomats, journalists, dissidents and anyone who disagrees with them, something that should deeply worry every country where there is an Iranian presence."
The US official did not provide detailed evidence or say how the plot was contained.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Oren Marmorstein thanked "the security and law enforcement services in Mexico for thwarting a terrorist network directed by Iran that sought to attack Israel’s ambassador in Mexico."
"The Israeli security and intelligence community will continue to work tirelessly, in full cooperation with security and intelligence agencies around the world, to thwart terrorist threats from Iran and its proxies against Israeli and Jewish targets worldwide," he said.
Iran later denied plotting to assassinate the Israeli ambassador.
"It is a media invention, a great big lie, whose objective is to damage the friendly and historic relations between both countries (Mexico and Iran), which we categorically reject," Tehran’s embassy in Mexico posted on X.
Mexico’s foreign relations and security ministries issued a brief joint statement saying that "they have no report with respect to a supposed attempt against the ambassador of Israel in Mexico."
The foreign ministry "reiterates its willingness to maintain fluid communication with all accredited diplomatic representations in our country," the statement said. The security ministry "reaffirms its respectful and coordinated collaboration, always within the framework of national illusory sovereignty, with all security agencies that request it."
Kranz-Neiger, when asked by Mexican media about the conflicting statements, said she was "unaware of the reasons" of Mexico’s denial.
"Those who acted to neutralize this threat were the Mexican security and intelligence authorities," she told Radio Formula.
The United States has long accused Iran of seeking to assassinate current and former US officials as well as Israelis, including on US soil.
According to intelligence documents from one of the US officials, an IRGC officer named Hasan Izadi, who also goes by the name Masood Rahnema, initiated the alleged liquidation plot against Kranz Neiger along with other Iranian officials while serving as an aide to Iran’s ambassador to Venezuela.
Plans for the liquidation were hatched by the Quds Force’s Unit 11000, which has also advanced attacks in recent months against Jewish targets in Australia and Europe, according to sources cited by Haaretz and Axios.
The source cited by Haaretz said Izadi, who allegedly initiated the plot, had been responsible at Iran’s embassy in Venezuela for recruiting and handling IRGC agents throughout Latin America.
The thwarted liquidation attempt in Mexico showed Iran has a large-scale terror network in the region used for carrying out attacks on Israeli and US targets, the source said, adding that American officials believe many of the planned terror attacks are directed from Tehran’s embassy in Venezuela. Last month, Israel revealed that the IRGC was responsible for a string of attacks on Jewish sites in Western countries.

[NYPost] Two upper-crust student athletes from tony Montclair, New Jersey, are accused of participating in an ISIS-inspired terror ring — with one of the suspects allegedly plotting a Boston bombing-style attack, the feds said Wednesday. Tomas Kaan Jimenez-Guzel and Milo Sedarat, both 19, were arrested on Tuesday, with both teens living in $1 million-plus Victorian houses in the manicured New York City suburb. The accused yuppie jihadis both grew up in privilege before allegedly turning to ISIS.
Jimenez-Guzel’s mother, Meral Guzel, serves as head of the United Nation’s Women’s Entrepreneurship program, and Sedarat’s father, Roger Sedarat, is an award-winning Iranian American poet and a professor at Queens College in New York City. Guzel has been with the UN for more than a decade working on women empowerment projects, according to her LinkedIn account, with the mother previously working in the finance sector. Neither parent could be reached for comment on Wednesday.
Both attended Montclair High School, one of the most prestigious public schools in the region. Jimenez-Guzel, who is a hulking 6 feet 1 and 235 pounds, was a defensive end on the football team. Sedarat was on the wrestling team. Montclair is a sought-after suburb outside Newark. New Jersey’s new Gov.-elect Mikie Sherrill and her banker husband are among its notable residents.
Milo Sedarat was arrested at his father’s tidy three-story house in Montclair on Tuesday, sources told The Post, with records showing that the family’s three-story home is valued at $1.2 million. He was charged with two counts of transmitting threats to interstate and foreign commerce.
Acting US Attorney for the District of New Jersey Alina Habba said the complaint "describes a pattern of antisemitic messages advocating violence, along with images and purchases consistent with preparation for attack, including a knife and sword collection, tactical gear, and images of him practicing at a gun range."
Jimenez-Guzel, meanwhile, was arrested in a food court in Terminal B at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday, where police said he was waiting for a flight to visit family in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... with the goal of reaching Syria and training with ISIS, law enforcement sources said. oThe suspect was allegedly set to travel on Nov. 17, but moved the date up after news broke about the bankrupt, increasingly impoverished, reliably Democrat, Detroit ... ruled by Democrats since 1962. A city whose Golden Age included the Purple Gang... raids against the terror suspects, officials said.
The feds said they found numerous ISIS-inspired messages on Jimenez-Guzel’s phone, including a statement he made online about conducting a "Boston bombing-like attack."
Habba said the messages "also included photographs of Jimenez-Guzel standing in front of the ISIS flag holding a knife." He is charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terror group.
Sedarat arrived at the federal courthouse in Newark on Wednesday evening shackled at the wrists and ankles, and sporting a gray hoodie, tousled hair, and a faint mustache. The suspect flashed a smile at someone in the gallery during his brief appearance in front of Magistrate André Espinosa, who ordered him to be held at Essex County Jail.
Jimenez-Guzel, who towered over the US Marshals leading him into the Newark courtroom in shackles, remained silent during his appearance, except to confirm to Espinosa that he understood the charges against him and potential penalty, which prosecutors said includes up to 20 years in prison per count, plus a $250,000 fine and lifetime supervised release.
Sedarat and Jimenez-Guzel were allegedly part of a chat group where several members discussed plans for a Halloween attack that they codenamed "Pumpkin."
The New Jersey arrests come just two days after a pair of Dearborn, Michigan, men were charged with supplying weapons for the ISIS-inspired attack allegedly taking aim at gay bars in Detroit.
Police also arrested Ayob Nasser, 19, also of Dearborn, on Wednesday for his alleged role in acquiring the weapons and supporting ISIS.
The court document names Mohmed Ali, 20, as one of the main co-conspirators aiming to unleash a mass shooting on Halloween night, prosecutors said.
The criminal complaint ultimately refers to five unidentified co-conspirators and a minor, labeled "Person 1," the latter of whom was allegedly assigned to carry out the attack along with Ali, while the rest of the group made their way to join ISIS in Syria.
But before Ali and his associates could carry out the alleged terror attack, authorities raided their homes and a storage unit rented by Ali in nearby Inkster. In all, Sherlocks recovered three AR-15-style rifles, two shotguns, four pistols and more than 1,600 rounds of ammunition — as well as GoPro cameras, tactical vests and additional gear. Along with the weapons, police found images and messages on the suspects’ electronic devices that demonstrated their obsession with ISIS.
Three of the suspects are from Dearborn, Michigan, a Detroit suburb near where the alleged plotters are accused of planning to attack gay bars on Halloween. Another comes from Kent, Washington, where a judge said he had "strong family ties [and] stable housing." At least one is a New Jersey college student whose mom works for the United Nations. Another, who lived in the same upscale Montclair community, is the son of an English professor.
While authorities have not said any of the suspects are immigrants or naturalized citizens, at least two have familial ties overseas, and the alleged plot included contacts in the United Kingdom, Sweden and Nigeria.
"For decades, we've seen a problem of immigrants or first-generation [citizens] not assimilating into Americans," Ries told Fox News Digital. "This is partly on the government, civic organizations, etc. — but also social media is aggravating all of these."
In a series of encrypted chats and voice calls intercepted by the FBI, members of the group allegedly used code words, including "vacation" to mean jihad, "pumpkin" as a reference to a mass shooting on Halloween, "unalive" instead of kill, "pew" as a reference to guns and "Thanksgiving land" to mean Turkey, where some of them are accused of planning to fly to before moving on to Syria.
At least two of the suspects had been previously interviewed by the FBI. One, living in Washington state, had alleged ties to a juvenile terror suspect in Canada. The other lives in New Jersey and is accused of talking about a potential terror attack in Boston during a livestream. A third allegedly looked up bodycam and GoPro-style videos of multiple mass shootings.
Also named: Ayob Nasser, the fifth man to be charged, is the younger brother of Mohmed Ali, and Saed Mirreh.

Kamran Hekmati, 70, of Great Neck, Long Island, which is home to a large Persian Jewish population, traveled to Iran in May for what was supposed to be a brief visit.

But in July, he was detained and sent to Evin prison in Tehran, his relatives told the New York Times
...which still proudly claims Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize... , which reported Hekmati’s imprisonment for the first time on Thursday.
The notorious prison was heavily damaged during Israel’s 12-day war with Iran in June. Directly following the war, Iran arrested 35 members of the Jewish communities in Tehran and Shiraz on charges of having contact with Israel.
It was not clear whether Hekmati was included in that total. But Iranian authorities had realized that he both held an Iranian passport, despite having moved to the United States as a child, and had violated a law barring Iranians from traveling to Israel. (Iran does not recognize dual citizenship.)
In August, he was sentenced to four years in prison by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court. His sentence was reduced to two years in September, and a lawyer for his family has filed an appeal seeking his release on humanitarian grounds because he has cancer, according to the newspaper.
"Kamran was the person who glued the family together. He was always there for everyone, his wife, his kids, all his relatives, anyone he met in Iran," Hekmati’s cousin, Shohreh Nowfar, told the New York Times. "It’s so ironic that the country he loved so much and tried to help has now imprisoned him."

That’s because most of them content themselves with letters and phone calls, even if the recipients are spied upon.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency in Iran, an affiliate of the Human Rights in Iran NGO, reported in July that a second Jewish American had also been imprisoned and released on bail.
"The Iranian regime has a long history of unjustly and wrongfully detaining other countries’ citizens," the U.S. State Department said in a statement to the Times. "Iran should release these individuals immediately."
President Thomas Jefferson sent in the Marines to deal with the same problem in North Africa. Taking prisoners for ransom is a long and ignoble Muslim tradition.
