[Regnum] The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) monitored the travel of Donald Trump's family members during Joe Biden's presidency. The surveillance was conducted as part of a secret operation codenamed "Plasma Echo," The New York Post ( NYP ) reported on October 6.
According to the publication, agents monitored the movements of Trump's wife, Melania, and his youngest son, Barron. The FBI collected information, including on the types of aircraft used by members of the Trump family. Furthermore, intelligence agencies wiretapped the phone of future White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles. The authors of the article clarified that these actions were carried out in preparation for a search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida in connection with an investigation into the illegal possession of classified documents.
White House Press Secretary Lauren Bies called the operation spying on political opponents and called for those responsible to be held accountable. She stated that this was an abuse of government power.
In August 2022, FBI agents raided Trump's residence and seized classified documents in his possession. Trump insisted that, as head of state, he had the right to declassify any documents, and therefore the accusations of violating classified information storage rules were groundless. In November 2024, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta dismissed an appeal to reopen the case against Trump for mishandling classified documents. In early March 2025, the classified documents seized by the FBI in 2022 from Trump's estate were returned to him.
