Alexander Smirnov, 44, was sentenced to six years in prison in early January after pleading guilty in Los Angeles federal US court to tax evasion and lying to the FBI about the phony bribery scheme, which was described by prosecutors at the time as an effort to influence the outcome of the 2020 US presidential election.
Smirnov had been prosecuted by former US Justice Department special counsel David Weiss, who resigned in January just days before US President Donald Trump ...They hit him with slander, they impeached him twice. Nancy Pelosi tore up his State of the Union address on national TV. They stole an election and put his adherents in jail. They vilified him. They couldn't crucify him, so they shot him. Still, they can't keep him down... returned to the White House for his second term. Smirnov’s case was reassigned Thursday to a new federal prosecutor, who jointly filed a motion the same day with Smirnov’s attorneys seeking his release, court records show.
In the motion, the US government said it will review its "theory of the case." The motion also notes that Smirnov’s release from custody would allow him to receive proper treatment for health issues related to his eyes.
Smirnov has been in jug since February 2024. He was arrested at the Las Vegas airport after returning to the US from overseas.
A hearing on the motion was not immediately scheduled Thursday.
Smirnov had falsely claimed to his FBI handler that around 2015, executives from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma paid then-US vice president Biden and his son $5 million each.
The explosive claim in 2020 came after Smirnov expressed "bias" about Biden as a US presidential candidate, according to prosecutors at the time. In reality, Sherlocks found Smirnov had only routine business dealings with Burisma starting in 2017 — after Biden’s term as US vice president.
Authorities said Smirnov’s false claim "set off a firestorm in Congress" when it resurfaced years later as part of the House impeachment inquiry into Biden, who won the presidency over Trump in 2020. The Biden administration dismissed the impeachment effort as a "stunt."
Weiss also brought gun and tax charges against Hunter Biden, who was supposed to be sentenced in December after being convicted at a trial in the gun case and pleading guilty to tax charges. But he was pardoned by his father, who said he believed "raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice."

Whatever law it is that makes lying to the FBI a crime should be repealed because too many times we find it was the FBI that lied. The FBI can fabricate evidence that the truth is a lie. They can also alter the notes from an interview and claim that an interviewee lied when in fact he or she was telling the truth. Then they commit lawfare on behalf of corrupt politicians, put an innocent person in jail and ruin his or her reputation for telling the truth. This is why we don't trust the FBI anymore.

[FoxNews] California, New York and Massachusetts doled out more than $300M in improper unemployment payments over the last four years, according to DOGE
After finding $382 million in fraudulent unemployment payments since 2020, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) identified California, New York and Massachusetts as the primary culprits.
The three Democrat-led states accounted for $305 million in improper claim payments, DOGE said Thursday.
The group added that California also accounted for 68% of the benefits that were dispensed under former President Joe Biden to parolees identified by federal authorities as being on the government's terrorist watchlist, or who had criminal records.
California, New York and Massachusetts all have a Democratic trifecta — meaning Democrats control the state House, Senate and the governor's office. They also have a Democratic triplex, which includes party control of the Attorney General, Secretary of State and governorship.
"There’s a reason for the mass exodus from Democrat-run states that have mismanaged their economies and driven residents to the nearest Republican-led state," White House spokesperson Harrison Fields told Fox News Digital. "High taxes, poor stewardship of taxpayer dollars and progressive policies continue to yield negative results, which is why Americans overwhelmingly support the work of DOGE."
Earlier this week, DOGE reported that since 2020, hundreds of millions in fraudulent unemployment benefits went to tens of thousands of recipients listed as over 115 years old, between ages 1 and 5, or even with birthdates that haven't occurred yet.
"This is another incredible discovery by the DOGE team, finding nearly $400 million in fraudulent unemployment payments. The Labor Department is committed to recovering Americans’ stolen tax dollars. We will catch these thieves and keep working to root out egregious fraud," said Labor Department Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer.
Additionally, DOGE also found this week that it was "routine" under the Biden administration to admit immigrants into the country with minimal screening and, as a result, led to more than 6,000 people — either with criminal records, or flagged on the FBI's terror watchlist — entering the country.
Furthermore, DOGE found, hundreds of these people were able to collect public benefits — including approximately $42,000 through the government's unemployment insurance program. These people also collected money from federal student loan programs, food stamp programs and IRS tax refunds.
The Trump administration ended parole for everyone identified as having a criminal record, or being on the FBI's terror watchlist.

[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] The chief DEI officer at NASA's jet propulsion lab was fired after her title was changed to hide her from Donald Trump's war on diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
Trump and 'First Buddy' Elon Musk have been happy warriors against DEI, working to rid the federal government of what they call unfair practices.
Neela Rajendra had run the lab's central diversity office, at one point arguing that having deadlines for work projects undermine inclusion, according to The Washington Free Beacon.
However, amid a series of 900 job cuts due to budgeting issues made in 2024, the diversity office was cut but Rajendra was mysteriously kept on.
She'd had all references to DEI washed from from her title but reportedly kept many of the same job duties as 'head of employee success.'
In early March, Rajendra was still in charge of the lab's 'Black Excellence Strategic Team.'
However, earlier this week in response to reports she was being protected from Trump administration DEI cuts, the lab parted ways with Rajendra.
'Neela Rajendra is no longer working at [the Jet Propulsion Laboratory]. We are incredibly grateful for the lasting impact she made to our organization. We wish her the very best,' lab director Laurie Leshin wrote in an all-staff email on Thursday.
