Not long ago, I phoned the wife of a recently departed old friend to pass along a kind word or two. She immediately launched into a tirade of a local man who dropped by for a visit and sat in her lawn chair a bit too long. The implications were quite obvious. I wished her the best and discreetly ended the call.
