katyn in poland, in 1940, if it was in poland then, would not be in poland today, because the borders were moved in 1945. I was unable to find maps that showed the location of katyn, scene of the massacre of polish officers by the nkvd in 1940, as admitted by yeltsin. I believe it became part of the USSR but whether it was Ukraine or White Russia, I don't know. My guess is that the wild stories about other massacres at a place with the same name were part of the nkvd efforts to bury the original massacre. Anyway, the story from archives is that only a proportion of the polish officers murdered by the nkvd were killed at katyn, though many more were gathered there and killed elsewhere, and many were gathered elsewhere.

Katyn is located today in Russia, a few miles west of Smolensk. It is not far from the Belorus border

#4 It sounds like Khatyn and Katyn are two different places with two different massacres — one Ukrainian vs Belarussian, the other Soviet vs Polish.
