#1 In this PC environment, it was just a matter of time. The Tribe owner, Dolan, is about as limp Richard as they come. But if the Redskins owner Snider can cave in, then most anybody can as well.

105 years of "Indians" soon to be gone. But, come on, I really don't see the tribes of native Americans storming the Bastille over this baseball club nickname. It's a rubbish decision, but, sadly, not unexpected.

#2 In 2018, Major League Baseball and the Indians mutually agreed to remove Chief Wahoo from the team's jersey, caps as well as in signage across Progressive Field.

It's been said that that was in the works for a while, and the limp Richard owner of the Tribe, Dolan, did it to get the All-star game in Cleveland for 2019.

The team has been called the Indians for nearly a century.

Well, I suppose "nearly" is correct, but "over a century" has a different impression (105 years to be exact).

Heaven help hockey's Chicago Blackhawks.

#7 Albuquerque was the annual site of the Gathering of Nations. It wasn't unusual to see the indigenous attendees wearing 'appropriated' sports related gear of their kindred. They're going to become invisible having their likeness and the respect to their warrior* heritage wiped from public consciousness.

* early explorers and voyagers noted the tribe on tribe combat among the locals long before any major presence of European colonists.

I actually have a certain sympathy for Dolan - it's been known in town for a while that the league has dropped not-so-subtle hints that if he won't change the name, they might just 86 him and find somebody who would. On top of that, I would point out that although there is some pressure on Atlanta to change their name, MLB isn't leaning on them anywhere near as hard - being a major market will do that for you. Cleveland doesn't have enough financial clout, even under the best of circumstances, to effectively resist.

#10 The judo move that should've been used here (and I think I mentioned it when the Redskins name got trashed) was to name the team after a tribe once you get their blessing (and give up some merch rights to get it). If it's a local tribe, all the better.

#11 IIRC, the Indians were named that to HONOR a native American player.

BTW, the Indians were always my favorite team growing up. I went to college in Cleveland, and my wife is from there.

#17 And soon, despite all of the ballyhoo to the contrary and also weirdly because of it, Indians a/k/a Native Americans will disappear from the American cultural landscape entirely. The tribes are shrinking; the best members leaving to join mainstream society (and often marry whites and Hispanics), the less capable dwindling on the reservations. I live at the edge of a "res" and the trends are very clear: 1,100 members living there, 1,200 living outside of it. That later number won't ever move back, their kids will only visit grandma reluctantly, and their grand kids mostly won't qualify for tribal membership at all.

Didn't have to be that way. Some of the tribes (like the Ute) have done reasonably well for themselves. But being remembered via sports and movies as brave and indomitable warriors isn't the worst thing for your cultural self-esteem. Being objects of pity for activists until they move onto the next thing... not so much.
