Starbucks Ordered to Pay Additional $2.7 Million in Damages to Manager Fired For Being White – After She Was Previously Awarded $25 Million
[Gateway] Feel good story of the day.

A Starbucks manager who was previously awarded $25 million in a wrongful termination lawsuit was awarded an additional $2.7 million in damages.

Shannon Phillips was fired in 2018 after baristas at a Philly location refused to allow two black men to use the restroom since they were not paying customers.

At the time, Starbucks had a policy in place that prohibited non-paying customers from using their restrooms.

In April 2018, two black men, Rashon Nelson, and Donte Robinson, sat inside a Starbucks in Philly while they waited for a friend to arrive.

A Starbucks employee denied one of the black men permission to use the restroom since he was not a paying customer.

Starbucks staff ended up calling the police after things escalated and the two men refused to leave the cafe.

Of course, BLM and other agitators showed up to the Philly Starbucks branch after the two black men were arrested for ’trespassing.’

Starbucks bent over backward to apologize to the two black men, ordered all 175,000 employees to undergo racial bias training, and opened up their bathrooms to everyone.

After opening their bathrooms to everyone, Starbucks employees found syringes, drug baggies and blood all over the walls in the bathroom.

The coffee giant also fired Shannon Phillips even though she wasn’t at the Philly branch when the incident happened.

A judge on Wednesday ordered Starbucks to pay Phillips an additional $2,736,755 in back pay, front pay and tax gross, ABC News reported.

#1  "At the time, Starbucks had a policy in place that prohibited non-paying customers from using their restrooms."

Here's the fatal allegation in any lawsuit: You didn't follow your own policies. I've always seen plaintiffs win with that one, especially when it's true. A cautionary note for having gigantic books full of "official" corporate policies written down.

Mom of 11-year-old girl found dead under bed after being raped speaks out in anguish
[NYPOST] The devastated mother of an 11-year-old Texas girl whose body was left under her dad’s bed after she was raped has spoken out about the shocking crime — saying, "I don’t want to cry anymore ... I want justice."

Ana Elizabeth Xitumul Saput railed against the person who carried out the unspeakable crime against Maria, who had been home alone in Pasadena on Saturday when she alerted her dad at work that someone was at the door.

"I don’t want to cry anymore, because I have a bad heart," the grieving mom told Telemundo 47 from Guatemala, where she still lives with Maria’s younger sister.

"I want justice. I need her killer to turn himself in and I’m asking God that kind-hearted people help us bring our daughter’s remains back to Guatemala," Xitumul Saput said, adding that she just wants to see her daughter one final time.

"This person has no feelings. Don’t you have sisters, a mother?" she asked of the still-at-large killer.

Xitumul Saput said she and her younger daughter had stayed behind in Guatemala because of her heart issues.

No suspects have been identified and Crime Stoppers is offering a $5,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
From Skid's link:
Police have named 18-year-old Juan Carlos Garcia-Rodriguez, from Guatemala, as a suspect
He reportedly crossed into the US through El Paso, Texas, in January and 'self-surrendered' to authorities before he was released

Maria’s dad, Carmelo Gonzalez, 32, said he had recently arrived at work when Maria texted him at 10 a.m. Saturday that a stranger knocked at their door.

"I told her, ’Don’t open the door because I am arriving at work,’ and she responded, ’I am in my bed,’" the grieving dad said of the "good, quiet girl" who had only recently turned 11.

Maria’s aunt and uncle didn’t find her when they went to the home at the behest of the worried dad — but they became alarmed when they noticed coffee and sugar on the couch, according to the local report.

"I felt something different immediately after opening the door. I thought, ’What happened here?’" Reginaldo Gonzalez told Telemundo 47.

When Maria’s dad returned several hours later, he thought the girl was doing the laundry because the basket was missing, the outlet reported.

"He asked out loud, ’Why is my laundry basket not here?" Reginaldo told Telemundo. "Then we found her. They put the girl inside a trash bag in the basket under the bed."

The girl had been raped, strangled and suffered blunt force trauma to the head, officials said.

The home showed no signs of forced entry, and the door was closed but unlocked when the aunt and uncle first checked the scene, Pasadena Police Chief Josh Bruegger told news hounds.

Bruegger said that "at this point, the father’s alibi checks out, so he is — at this point, at least — not a suspect."

The chief added that the killer likely knew that the little girl was home alone at the time.

"It seems awfully suspicious that Dad leaves for work and within 30 minutes you’ve got somebody knocking at the door," he said.

Gonzalez expressed his heartbreak in an interview with a Spanish-language news outlet.

"They took my child, whom I loved the most," he told Univision.

Arizona IRS office has immediate opening
PHOENIX (KPHO/Gray News) - An agent with the IRS is dead after being accidentally shot by another agent during a training exercise Thursday at a federal gun range, according to officials.

On Friday, IRS officials identified the victim as 47-year-old Patrick Bauer, a longtime Arizona resident.

Arizona’s Family reports a spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an incident occurred at its gun range in the Phoenix area. The gun range was reportedly being utilized by multiple federal agencies at the time of the shooting through an interagency agreement.

A spokesperson said no Federal Bureau of Prisons employees were injured.

Charlotte M. Dennis with the Phoenix Field Office of the IRS Criminal Investigation Division confirmed the incident involving a special agent.

Officials say Bauer was taken to HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center, where he died.

"Our concern today is for the agent and their family," she said in the written statement.

Bauer is survived by his wife and four kids. He was also a retired Master Sergeant in the Arizona Air National Guard.

"Our concern today is for the agent and their family," she shared in a statement.

Man split in half after jumping 750 feet to his death from roof of ritzy Mandarin Hotel
[NYPOST] A man jumped 750 feet to his death from the roof of a five-star Manhattan hotel on Thursday night, according to police.
"Goodbye, cruel world! Concrete, here I come!"
Police believe the man leaped from the top of the ritzy Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Columbus Circle shortly after 9 p.m., police and sources said.
"Yeah. This is kinda like flying, ain't it?"
The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene.
"He's dead, Jim. That end of him is too."
The man, who does not appear to have been a guest at the hotel or living in its residences, is believed to have taken a service elevator to the roof, police sources said.
"Hummmm.... Lessee here... Probably this button... This thing goes up fast! Betcha I come down even faster!"
He hit the hotel’s glass awning on the way down, and his body split in half, sources said.
"Ow! (briefly)"
An arm was found across the street, where construction scaffolding was seen dripping with blood, they added.
"There's another one over there... And there..."
"Wait a minute! How many arms did this guy have?"

He hit a balcony on the way down, and his body split in half, sources said.
He was beside himself.
"Maude, did you just hear something on the balcony?"
"Yeah. I can't see what it was though. The glass is covered with blood."

Sources said the victim appeared to be wearing pajamas.
He wandered the streets of New York and walked into a ritzy hotel, took a service elevator to the roof and tried to fly home. Happens all the time, except for the part about splitting in half..
There were no other injuries and no criminality is suspected at this time, cops said.
Nobody was standing under him for his first flying lesson.
A standard Mandarin Oriental room with a Central Park view can fetch upward of $1,195.
Cheeze McKnuckles! I once stayed in a motel in Hope, Arkansas for a buck. Of course that was in 1966. They didn't offer fine dining or flying lessons.
The hotel lies on the top 19 floors of the 55-story Deutsche Bank Center tower, which is also home to some of Hollywood’s most elite celebrities.
None of whom can fly.
Actress Cynthia Nixon, model Gisele Bundchen and musician Jay-Z are just some of the A-listers who once owned residences in the tower, which lies on "Billionaire’s Row."

Naval Base San Diego to deploy ships, submarines ahead of Hurricane Hilary
[10 News] The fun begins
The U.S. Navy is moving its fleets and submarines from Naval Base San Diego to avoid potential damage from Hurricane Hilary.

According to the naval base, the ships will remain at sea until inclement weather from the storm subsides, and aircraft are secured in hangars that are rated to withstand wind greater than those anticipated onboard Naval Air Station North Island and Naval Air Facility El Centro.

Hilary now category 4 hurricane, to weaken before hitting California
Tropical Storm Warning issued as Hurricane Hilary approaches SoCal, San Diego County
"In order to ensure the safety of our Sailors and ships, we are taking all necessary measures to mitigate potential damage to infrastructure and Third Fleet vessels caused by the storm," said Vice Adm. Michael Boyle, Commander, U.S. Third Fleet.

"Safety remains our top priority, and putting all capable ships to sea makes it easier for us to manage the situation ashore."

Navy officials say ships remaining in port will take extra precautions to avoid potential damage, and Navy installations are preparing for the expected heavy rain and wind by removing hazards and securing buildings, protecting essential equipment, moving small craft to safe havens, placing sandbags, and removing debris from drainage areas.

Navy officials will hold a press conference on Saturday, August 19, to share information about its preparations for the storm.

FAO warns of locust invasion of several areas in Yemen
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] The United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned Thursday of the breeding of desert locust swarms in parts of the interior regions of Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
in the coming days.

The organization indicated that there are some groups of adult swarms in Wadi Hadramout
...the formerly independent Qu'aiti state and sultanate, annexed by Communist South Yemen in 1968, encompassing a region along the Gulf of Aden, extending eastwards to the borders of the Dhofar region of Oman. The people are called Hadhramis and speak Hadhrami Arabic. The city Tarimis is estimated to contain the highest concentration of descendants of the Prophet Muhammad (PTUI) anywhere in the world, approximately seven in every square yard...
, in addition to the spread of adult and immature insects in the interior regions and adult and immature insects on the eastern coast of the country.

The locust crisis continues to escalate in Yemen as a result of the arrival of many swarms and their movement from one place to another in light of the limited means of control and the increasing dangers of the continuous invasion of desert locusts in particular and their threat to the sources of food security in the country.

Europe
Germany Reverses Course On Pledge To Meet NATO Military Spending Target
[ZH] "It's 2% under the metric system"
Berlin has backed off its plan to legally commit itself to meeting NATO’s two percent yearly military spending target, a government source told Reuters on Wednesday. Finance Minister Christian Lindner’s draft of a new budget financing law was passed by parliament after a clause pledging to meet the target was deleted at the last minute.

Instead, in keeping with Berlin’s National Security Strategy, it will maintain its policy to aim for spending two percent of GDP on military spending on average over a five-year period. Germany’s Foreign Ministry, led by Annalena Baerbock, opposed the plan favored by the Defense Ministry to commit to 2 percent spending every year.

"From now on, we will invest more than 2 percent of the GDP into our defense year after year," Chancellor Olaf Scholz declared in February 2022 when he announced the Zeitenwende, a sea change in German foreign policy.

This came after the Kremlin launched its war with Kiev, a de facto NATO member on Russia’s doorstep. In order to "weaken" Russia, the conflict quickly morphed into a proxy war against Moscow led by the Washington-led alliance.

As a result of the proxy war with Russia, Berlin has recently taken steps which severely damaged relations between Germany and the Kremlin. Namely, green-lighting the export of Poland’s Soviet-era warplanes which originally came from German military stocks.

Additionally, yielding to pressure from Washington and elsewhere inside NATO, Scholz approved the transfer of German-made main battle tanks to Kiev, and sent its own tanks as well, vastly escalating the tensions with Russia.

Earlier in the war, Scholz had explicitly ruled out just such steps over concerns that sending heavy weapons, including tanks and planes, to Ukraine would lead to a direct war between the North Atlantic alliance and Russia. In May, Berlin announced it was providing Kiev with a massive arms package worth nearly $3 billion, including 30 Leopard 1 tanks as well as Marder fighting vehicles. This was Germany’s largest transfer of weapons since the war began.

NATO members have been increasing their defense spending since Russia’s invasion, which has been a boon for weapons makers particularly in the US and the UK. According to Reuters, half of a $103 billion special fund Berlin has set up to modernize the German military will be spent purchasing arms made by the US military industrial complex.

Turkish Cypriot forces assault Cyprus peacekeepers: UN
[AlAhram] Ottoman Turkish Cypriot forces assaulted UN peacekeepers Friday as they attempted to block the construction of a controversial road in the buffer zone dividing Cyprus, the UN mission on the island said.

The incident occurred in Pyla, a village in the UN-patrolled Green Line that slices between the internationally recognised Republic of Cyprus and a breakaway Ottoman Turkish Cypriot statelet in the north.

The United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
mission had on Thursday warned the Ottoman Turkish Cypriot authorities against "unauthorised construction activities inside the UN buffer zone".

But it said its peacekeepers had come under attack on Friday as they tried to block the construction of the road that encroaches on the buffer zone.

"The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus condemns the assaults against UN peacekeepers and damage to UN vehicles by personnel from the Ottoman Turkish Cypriot side this morning," UNFICYP said in a statement.

It said the incident occurred inside the buffer zone near Pyla, outside the southern coastal town of Larnaca.

"Threats to the safety of UN peacekeepers and damage to UN property are unacceptable and constitute a serious crime under international law which will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law," the UN mission said.

An official said Ottoman Turkish Cypriot police and military in plain clothes had punched a peacekeeper and assaulted a dozen others by "pushing them back violent mostly peacefully".

'FAITS ACCOMPLIS'
A tractor was used to drag a UN vehicle out of the way and major damage had been caused to three vehicles, said the source who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity.

In its statement, the UN mission urged the Ottoman Turkish Cypriot side to "respect the mission's mandated authority inside the UN buffer zone, refrain from any actions that could escalate tensions further, and withdraw all personnel and machinery from the UN buffer zone immediately".

UNFICYP said it was determined to block any construction work and would remain in the area.

"The mission is monitoring the situation closely and remains committed to ensuring calm and stability are maintained in the area," it said.

Cyprus government front man Konstantinos Letymbiotis accused the Ottoman Turkish side of trying to create new "faits accomplis" at Pyla by constructing a road connecting the "occupied village of Arsos with a forward illegal military outpost".

He said it was "an attempt at a very serious violation of the status quo".

European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
member Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Ottoman Turkish forces occupied the island's northern third in response to a military coup sponsored by the junta then in power in Greece.

The statehood of the Ottoman Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus that Ottoman Turkish Cypriot leaders proclaimed in 1983 is recognised only by The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
Efforts to reunify the eastern Mediterranean island have been at a standstill since the last round of UN-backed talks collapsed in 2017.

Government Corruption
Big Government Has Come for This Small-Town Amish Farmer. Here's How He's Fighting Back.
[Townhall] "They came with a search warrant," softly spoke Samuel B. Fisher, a mild-mannered cattle farmer operating a 100-acre farm tucked away in Virginia's heartland. Fisher's bread-and-butter, Golden Valley Farms, carves out the scenic countryside that's a hop, skip, and a jump away from historic Farmville, a postcard-perfect small Southern town with classical Main Street charm.

The father of five had graciously invited us down to his idyllic pasture to rehash the whirlwind of unforeseen events that unfolded over the cruel summer. It was a tumultuous time on the Fisher farm, an upheaval that threatened to upend the man's livelihood.

"Then, they tagged the meat, so that we can't touch it; we can't sell it; we can't feed our family with it," Fisher told Townhall.

There, we sat in Fisher's office on the periphery of a multi-purpose barn, surrounded by sparsely scattered cardboard boxes of farm-fresh squash situated across the concrete floor and vintage-style empty half-gallon glass jugs labeled with "Golden Valley Farms CHEMICAL FREE A2/A2 Goat Milk" stickers that lined the nearby shelves, awaiting to be filled and delivered statewide.

Moments earlier, upon our arrival, we were greeted by the welcoming committee: a trio of barefoot, dirt-covered kids holding four-week-old kittens, sized smaller than an ear of corn and clutching the children's arms for dear life. One of the young boys, sporting suspenders and a straw hat with an LED headlamp strapped to it, scurried away to fetch his father—whose workdays begin before daybreak at 5:30 a.m. and end past sundown—from the fields. The other boy, his sandy-haired brother in a bowl haircut, prodded us with a question, asking in a small voice if we'll "put it on the news." Now, the curious children were captivated by the camera, gathered wide-eyed around Fisher after dragging a handful of upside-down milk crates over to perch themselves upon. A little girl, draped in a sunflower-colored dress, bobbed in and out of frame to wrangle one of the family's dogs, as Fisher hushed her in Pennsylvania Dutch. In the neighboring processing-and-packaging room, two girls were hand-sorting chicken heads and feet, a tedious undertaking we would later closely observe prior to embarking on a walking tour of Fisher's picturesque property.

Pres. Trump To Sit For Interview With Tucker Carlson, Skip First GOP Debate
[WIRE] Former President Donald Trump will skip next week’s GOP 2024 presidential primary debate and instead sit down for an interview with Tucker Carlson, The New York Times reported Friday.

Multiple sources close to Trump have said that the GOP presidential primary leader will not attend the debate in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, according to the NYT. He has long intimated his plans to avoid the first debate on the campaign trail. Trump, who is leading his Republican opponents by double digits in both national and early primary state polls, shared a lengthy statement on social media Thursday that concluded with "People know my Record, one of the BEST EVER, so why would I Debate?"

It was reported earlier this month that Fox News executives had dinner with Trump in an apparent attempt to convince him to join the debate. Per Republican National Committee 2024 debate rules, the former president would have had to sign a pledge to support whoever wins the GOP presidential nomination. Trump explained last week he wouldn’t want to sign it because there are "three or four people that I wouldn’t support for president." The former president added, "So right there, there’s a problem, okay?"

Trump received heavy criticism for not attending The Family Leadership Summit in Iowa and "fireside chat" with Carlson in July. All other major campaign opponents — including second-place challenger Ron DeSantis — joined Carlson in Iowa for an interview.

Carlson, the NYT noted, has refused to stop his show from airing on Twitter despite legal notices from his former employer.
(FOAD, Fox)
This week, Carlson has released interviews with Democratic primary candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., and GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

#10  I think it will be interesting, in that Tucker is actually going to Challenge Trump on his screw-ups and blame-shifting. Yeah, he did alot right. Best Foreign policy President of my Lifetime, no question. Might be the best since the Bull Moose himself.

But there's other problems. Supporting Ronna, attacking Desantis(Just comes across as petty), using campaign funds for his defense, Trans idealogy (It was his decision that let it into the Miss America pagents, for example), the lockdowns, Fauci (He gave the little troll his power and didn't take it away after 14days to stop the spread), gave Governors power to lockdown, Spending bills he signed, the crime bill he signed and pushed for, not pardoning J6ers before he left office, and allowing the Special Counsel Circus.

Oh, and the Swamp is still there, more entrenched than ever. And yes, I'm a Desantis guy, I like Trump, if he wins Primary I will vote for him.

I also think this might be a mistake on his part. He's going to have to debate eventually, thin the crowd if you have to after the first states, but he's going to debate.

It's ok to talk to your Begonias
[Tel Aviv University] Do you talk to your plants? While you may not be able to hear them, your plants could very well be chatting away as well (perhaps they are not such great listeners after all), and that's especially true if they are having a bad day (did you forget to water them again?). For the first time in the world, TAU researchers recorded and analyzed sounds distinctly emitted by plants. The click-like sounds, resembling the popping of popcorn, are emitted at a volume similar to human speech, but at high frequencies, beyond the hearing range of the human ear. The researchers: "We found that plants usually emit sounds when they are under stress, and that each plant and each type of stress is associated with a specific identifiable sound. While imperceptible to the human ear, the sounds emitted by plants can probably be heard by various animals, such as bats, mice, and insects."

ISRO Releases Images Of Moon Captured By Chandrayaan-3's Lander
[OneIndia] ISRO on Friday released a set of visuals of the Moon captured by cameras positioned on the Lander Module of Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft.

The images, captured after the separation of the Lander Module from the Propulsion Module of the spacecraft on Thursday, showed the craters on the Moon's surface that were marked on the photographs released by ISRO as 'Fabry', 'Giordano Bruno' and 'Harkhebi J'.

The country's space agency shared on X (formerly Twitter) the images captured by the Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC) on August 15, and visuals from the Lander Imager (LI) Camera-1 on August 17 -- just after the separation of the Lander Module from the Propulsion Module.

The Lander Module comprising the lander (Vikram) and the rover (Pragyan) will on Friday be lowered to an orbit that takes it closer to the Moon's surface for the soft landing on the Lunar south pole on August 23.

New ‘very different' COVID-19 variant detected in Israel, Denmark and US
[Times of IS] A new COVID variant detected in Israel is being tracked by health authorities worldwide. The variant, sequenced in Israel and Denmark in late July, has now also appeared in Michigan in the United States.
There's an election coming
The World Health Organization SARS-CoV-2 virus evolution advisory group has designated the novel variant, known as BA.2.86, as a variant under monitoring (VUM) due to its many mutations. The US Centers for Disease Control is also monitoring it.

"No one knows about its virulence or how transmissible it is," said Prof. Ronit Calderon-Margalit, director of the School of Public Health at Hebrew University and Hadassah Medical Center.

Virologists are closely tracking the variant because it has more than thirty mutations within its spike protein.

"The interest is because it’s so detached from the BA.2 Omicron variant [which drove most COVID cases around the world]. So it’s like a second generation of the BA.2. Supposedly that’s how they see it now," Calderon-Margalit said.

'New York Times' considers legal action against OpenAI as copyright tensions swirl
by Bobby Allyn

[NPR] OpenAI, maker of ChatGPT, has in recent weeks been hit with lawsuits from comedian Sarah Silverman, U.S. novelists, and others alleging copyright infringement. Now, The New York Times is weighing possible legal action.

Lawyers for the newspaper are exploring whether to sue OpenAI to protect the intellectual property rights associated with its reporting, according to two people with direct knowledge of the discussions.

For weeks, the Times and the maker of ChatGPT have been locked in tense negotiations over reaching a licensing deal in which OpenAI would pay the Times for incorporating its stories in the tech company's AI tools, but the discussions have become so contentious that the paper is now considering legal action.

The individuals who confirmed the potential lawsuit requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.
