Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: February 27th, 2023
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 23:22 Washington does not consider China an objective mediator between Russia and Ukraine, said White House national security adviser John Kirby: "China is not at all a fair mediator between Russia and Ukraine. We clearly see it on the side of Russia, and the fact that tomorrow China hosts the President of Belarus, also proves it."

22:25 The situation in the Bakhmut direction is becoming more and more difficult, Zelensky said. According to him, the enemy is destroying everything that can be used to protect Ukrainian positions, to consolidate and defend.

21:58 Zelensky said in an evening video message that it will be possible to fully protect the sky of Ukraine only when "the aviation taboo in relations with our partners is removed." The President recalled the night attack by Iranian drones, as a result of which three employees of the State Emergency Service in Khmelnytsky were injured, two were killed.

"First of all, this is why we need the aviation component of air defense - modern combat aircraft, so that the entire territory of our state can be protected from Russian terror. Air defense is fully functional when it is provided, among other things, by aviation. Modern aviation," Zelensky stressed.

21:43 During his visit to China, Lukashenko said that Ukraine "has no other way than to conclude a peace treaty now, without preconditions," until Russia allegedly "put the economy on a military footing." Lukashenka also claims that last spring Kyiv abandoned negotiations under the influence of the West.

20:17 Deputy Defense Minister Anna Malyar said that the situation at the front is difficult: "The enemy army is increasing the intensity of assault operations. The most difficult situation remains in the Bakhmut direction. The enemy uses tactics of exhaustion and total destruction during offensive operations. At the same time, the enemy suffers losses , losing from 600 to 1000 people daily. The Ukrainian Defense Forces are conducting active defensive operations in the face of the quantitative superiority of the enemy."

19:21 Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, US assistance to Ukraine in the field of security, economic, humanitarian and social support has amounted to about $ 50 billion, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said.

18:54 Zaluzhny said that he had a telephone conversation with the head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, discussed with him the supply of military equipment, weapons and ammunition, the situation at the front and further plans of the Ukrainian Defense Forces to de-occupy its territory. "Updated the need to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian air defense system, including through the provision of F16 multi-purpose combat aircraft," the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine added.

18:50 The United States pledged to provide Ukraine with more than $10 billion in budget support by September. In addition, Washington allocated $1.5 billion for a speedy recovery and another $1.1 billion for the energy sector of Ukraine and Moldova, Shmyhal said after a meeting with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

18:41 Zelensky held a meeting in Kiev with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, the presidential press service reported.

18:38 Orban said that Hungary supports China's "peace plan": "Hungary calls for peace in all international forums, I see that most states support peace. Hungary cannot isolate itself from most of the world ... Therefore, we consider it important China's peace plan and support it."

18:32 The main efforts of the Russian army are focusing on conducting offensive operations in the Kupyansky, Limansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdeevsky and Miner directions, increasing the number of personnel. Up to 200 conscripts from the Rostov region have been deployed to the occupied territory of the Lugansk region, the Geshtab reported in an evening report .

The Russians continue their attempts to discredit the Ukrainian Defense Forces and intimidate the residents of the Kherson region. In particular, they again fired mortars at the residential areas of the Oleshki settlement and blamed the Armed Forces of Ukraine for this.

18:03 The Supreme Anti-Corruption Court has recovered in favor of the state 88.89% of the shares of PIN Bank of the Russian oligarch Yevgeny Giner within the framework of the law on sanctions "and generally accepted ideas of humanity about justice," Arakhamia said. He added that "next will be Ocean Plaza."

17:31 The first battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has completed training in the operation of the M2 Bradley BMP at the American base in Germany, Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Pavlyuk said.

17:28 The PepsiСo company has resumed the work of its plant in the Nikolaev region, and the "world leader in the export of tomatoes" has also begun work in the region, OVA reported.

17:16 The damage to the Russian A-50 radar aircraft at the Machulishchi airfield in Belarus is good news, but this will not affect the ability of the Russians to attack Ukraine, Yuri Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said. According to him, Russia still has about nine such aircraft, of which half are modernized. Ignat added that his own sources confirmed the damage to the aircraft.

16:47 A year after the start of the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, 18% of the territory of Ukraine remains occupied, while during this period the Armed Forces of Ukraine liberated 7% of the territory.

16:21 The Russians are now using Iranian Shahed drones to track down and deplete Ukrainian air defense systems, Yuriy Ignat, spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, said: “Previously, they used it more in combination with missiles. Now they deplete air defense, detect its location. The same radar aircraft A -50 takes off when we are conducting combat work on the "Shaheds" - it fixes the places of launches from our anti-aircraft missile systems. In this way, they detect and develop an algorithm, where we launch from, how we move, etc."

Ignat added that, unlike previous launches, this night Russia launched Iranian drones not from the eastern coast of the Sea of Azov, but from the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation.

16:06 After a possible sabotage in Machulishchi, Lukashenka gathered representatives of law enforcement agencies and demanded to strengthen border security: “We must see the smallest aggressiveness against our state on the borders of our country in order to take response measures. They use any cases to stir up the situation in Belarus, and they will do it."

15:56 Poland will transfer ten Leopard 2A4 tanks to Ukraine, as well as 60 T-72 and PT-91 Twardy tanks within a few weeks after the completion of the training of Ukrainian crews, said Minister of the Office of the Polish Prime Minister Michal Dvorczyk.

15:51 The head of the organization of former Belarusian security forces ByPol Alexander Azarov told the Belarusian service of Radio Liberty the details of the alleged blowing up of the Russian plane in Machulishchi. According to him, the preparation of such an action takes 3-4 months, there are many options for sabotage, but not all of them succeed. Azarov confirmed that in the case of the Russian A-50 aircraft, it was a drone attack, but he did not specify their number. Only a few participants participated in the action, the most important and difficult was to prepare their evacuation, the head of ByPol added. He also stressed that the partisans act independently, they are not controlled by the special services of foreign states, as Lukashenka's representatives stated.

15:27 The European Council obliged all individuals and organizations included in the anti-Russian sanctions lists to notify national and European regulators of their assets in the EU countries. In addition, the Russians were ordered to cooperate with local authorities to block their assets. Individuals and legal entities from the sanctions lists must apply to the EU authorities no later than six weeks after the imposition of sanctions, and failure to comply with these requirements in the EU will be considered as a circumvention of sanctions.

15:02 The European Commission and Poland, with the support of the UN, are launching an initiative to search for thousands of Ukrainian children whom the Russian military illegally took out of the occupied territories of Ukraine, said EC spokeswoman Dana Spinant. She stressed that those responsible for the crimes must be punished. Detailed information about the initiative will be presented in a few days.

14:45 Foreign ministers of the G20 countries will gather in New Delhi on March 1-2, the main topics of the meeting will be Russia's war against Ukraine and the growing tension between the US and China, Reuters reports. The meeting comes shortly after G20 finance ministers in Bangalore failed to reach consensus on a joint statement condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine.

14:19 The Russians are shelling the village of Kurakhovka in the Donetsk region, it is known about one dead, the shelling continues, the Office of the President said.

13:51 Russia is trying to change the tactics of rocket attacks on Ukraine, Andrey Chernyak, a spokesman for the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense, said in a comment to RBC-Ukraine. According to him, the Russian Federation has less than 100 high-precision cruise missiles that are most often used in shelling - Caliber, Kh-101, Kh-555. Production volumes do not keep pace with the dynamics with which the Russians spent them until mid-February.

"They have not achieved a single strategic success, 95% of the Russian ground forces are involved in the aggression against Ukraine in one way or another - they have nothing and no one to fight with. Therefore, the Russians decided to increase their offensive potential by using aviation," Chernyak said. He added that the Russian Federation still has thousands of missiles, but they use them much more than they produce.

Also, Ukrainian intelligence emphasizes that the Russian army has not given up on the idea of destroying the energy system of Ukraine. Together with the energy sector, the Russian Federation seeks to destroy the fuel and energy sector in order to stop the supply of petroleum products.

13:36 In Russia, the military air defense was withdrawn from the subordination of the Ground Forces and reassigned to the main command of the Aerospace Forces of Russia, led by Sergei Surovikin, TASS reports, citing sources close to the Russian Defense Ministry.

13:09 The European Union has extended sanctions against Lukashenka and his entourage for another year - until the end of February 2024. Now the EU sanctions list for Belarus includes 243 individuals, including Lukashenka himself, and 32 legal entities. The sanctions concern visa restrictions and asset freezes.

12:57 The G7 countries , in a statement timed to coincide with the anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, announced their commitment to strengthen diplomatic, financial and military support for Kiev. They also stressed their determination to bring Putin and other perpetrators to justice.

12:51 In Belarus, after the alleged sabotage in Machulishchi, border guards have tightened checks at the exit from the country, the Belarusian service of Radio Liberty reports. Earlier, a representative of the Bypol organization said that the participants in the possible sabotage in Machulishchi had already left Belarus and were now safe.

12:18 Russians are dismantling the Chumak plant in the Kherson region, deputy of the regional council Sergei Khlan said. According to him, the invaders tried to resume the work of the enterprise and handed it over to some company from the Crimea. This company tried to get the plant up and running, but without the software, it failed.

12:14 Last year, Ukraine unblocked political decisions regarding six out of seven types of weapons, Kuleba said: "Each discussion about the supply of a new, fundamentally important type of weapon to Ukraine began with "no" and ended with "yes." Last year, we unblocked political decisions on six of the seven types of weapons that change the rules of the game. Only combat aircraft remain."

11:47 Peskov said that the Chinese "peace plan" requires careful analysis, "it is a long and intense process." At the same time, there are currently no prerequisites for negotiations on Ukraine, and the "special operation" is moving "in the direction of its goals," the Kremlin speaker added.

Peskov also said that the situation around Transnistria is allegedly "provoked from outside", and for the Kremlin the situation in this region is "the subject of the closest attention and cause for concern."

11:38 OK Pivden warns of a high probability of missile strikes. This, in particular, is evidenced by the analysis of aviation activity and previous night drone attacks. The Russian ship grouping in the Black Sea keeps a safe distance from the Ukrainian-controlled coast. Now there are six ships, among which one submarine launch vehicle, launched in the morning, equipped with four Caliber missiles. Russia also continues aerial reconnaissance.

11:04 Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan explained Washington's position regarding the provision of fighter jets to Ukraine: "In the first stage, when they defended Kiev, it was Javelin and Stinger. And that helped protect Kiev. In the second stage, there was heavy artillery to help them defend from the Russians in the east. At this stage, the critical element is the ability to maneuver on the ground. And that means tanks, armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles ... F-16 is a question for later."

10:57 The SBU neutralized the FSB agent network in Odessa, among the detainees is an assistant to the sanctioned deputy from Crimea Konstantin Malchikov. The attackers reconnoitered the locations of strategically important objects of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine, corrected Russian missile strikes. One of the participants in the network of agents turned out to be the pro-Kremlin blogger Alexander Sinitsyn, who has been hiding in Ryazan since 2014.

10:50 In Khmelnitsky, another rescuer died in the hospital, who was injured during a night attack by drones, said the head of the OVA Serhiy Gamaly. Thus, the death toll rose to two.

10:44 The head of the Lugansk OVA, Serhiy Gaidai, announced the escalation: “An escalation is already underway, a full-scale offensive is already being partially implemented. A huge amount of heavy equipment was brought to the occupied part of the Lugansk region. in the offensive in different directions with different compositions, that is, there is a probing of weak points in the defense of Ukraine.

At the same time, Gaidai added that the Russian troops would not attack with a large number of equipment and troops: "Their offensive is a lot of attacks in small groups."

10:31 There is no shortage of power in the energy system of Ukraine and is not predicted yet. All types of power plants are operating, electricity imports are approaching zero, Ukrenergo reported. However, with the beginning of the working week and an increase in consumption in the Odessa region, the consequences of enemy shelling affected: there was an emergency shutdown of individual elements of the transmission system in the region.

10:12 British intelligence writes that since February 21, at least 14 explosions have been reported in the Mariupol region. Incident sites include an airport ammunition depot, two fuel depots and a steel plant that Russia uses as a military base. At the same time, Mariupol is located at a distance of at least 80 km from the front line, and Russia was sure that the city was beyond the reach of conventional Ukrainian strike weapons.

Despite significant destruction at the start of the war, Mariupol is important to Russia because the largest city it captured in 2022, which it still controls, is also located on a key logistical route, analysts say.

09:35 North African countries have begun to massively import Russian oil products, which may indicate their use to circumvent EU sanctions, writes The Wall Street Journal. Moroccan imports of Russian diesel fuel rose to 2 million barrels in January against 600,000 barrels in all of 2021, according to Kpler. At least 1.2 million barrels are expected to arrive in the country in February. Algeria and Egypt are also seeing growth.

09:13 The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) notes that Putin is trying to concentrate all Russian forces under the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Defense. This is evidenced by a number of decisions, including the appointment of Gerasimov instead of Surovikin, the integration of the 1st and 2nd army corps of the "DNR" and "LNR" into the Russian armed forces, the restriction of the Wagner PMC in obtaining ammunition, etc.

ISW believes that Putin, in trying to prepare his people for a long and painful war, has realized that only the Russian Defense Ministry can realistically maintain the large mechanized forces he needs to achieve his ambitions in Ukraine.

09:01 CIA director William Burns said that the alliance between Russia and Iran is developing rapidly, and this is "alarming." According to him, Moscow is offering assistance to the Iranians in their missile program and is considering providing Tehran with fighter jets in exchange for military assistance. Burns noted that the Iranians had already provided the Russians not only with attack drones, but also with ammunition for artillery and tanks.

08:43 In the Donetsk region over the past day, as a result of Russian shelling, two people were injured, in Kharkiv - one person, in Kherson one person was killed, two were injured, according to the OVA.

08:22 The General Staff announced the approximate losses of the Russian Federation as of the morning of February 27.

  • personnel - about 148,690 (+560) people liquidated,

  • tanks - 3385 (+4),

  • armored combat vehicles - 6621 (+6),

  • artillery systems - 2380 (+0),

  • MLRS - 475 (+0),

  • air defense systems - 247 (+0),

  • aircraft - 300 (+1),

  • helicopters - 288 (+0),

  • UAV operational-tactical level - 2048 (+11),

  • cruise missiles - 873 (+0),

  • ships/boats - 18 (+0),

  • automotive equipment and tankers - 5248 (+6),

  • special equipment - 230 (+0).

08:14 The Russian army is focusing its main efforts on conducting offensive operations in the Kupyansky, Limansky, Bakhmutsky, Avdeevsky and Miner directions. Over the past day, Ukrainian defenders repulsed 81 attacks in these areas, the General Staff said in the morning report .

Due to fears of de-occupation of Ukrainian territories in Oleshki and Skadovsk, Kherson region, the Russian occupation "authority" is preparing to flee to Crimea. In particular, from February 21, the departure of local collaborators to Bakhchisaray, Simferopol and Kerch continues, and from February 24, the invaders announced the so-called "evacuation" to everyone. Military trucks are used to transport collaborators, only hand luggage is allowed.

07:45 On the night of February 27, the Russians fired 14 Shahed strike drones from the northern direction across Ukraine, 11 of them were destroyed, the command of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported.

07:39 At night, nine Shahed UAVs were shot down over Kiev. The attack was carried out in two waves, maximally stretched in time. Thus, the Russians tried to deplete the Ukrainian air defense, so the air raid in the capital lasted five and a half hours, said the head of the KGVA, Sergei Popko. According to preliminary data, there were no casualties or hits on infrastructure facilities.

07:33 At night, the Russians launched three strikes with drones on the city of Khmelnitsky. According to preliminary information, one person died, four were injured, said the head of the OVA, Sergei Gamaly. Firefighting continues, civilian homes have been damaged.

07:08 The Russians hit Zaporozhye with S-300 missiles at night, one of the infrastructure facilities was damaged, people were not injured, the OVA reported. One of the launched Russian projectiles probably fell into the water.

04:04 Putin underestimates US resolve to support Ukraine, CIA Director William Burns said. According to him, the Russian president believes that Americans have an "attention deficit disorder", and therefore they will eventually "move to another issue." He added that now Putin "is too confident in his ability to deplete Ukraine."

Burns also said that during the meeting in November, Russian intelligence chief Sergei Naryshkin showed "impertinence and pride", which reflected Putin's own beliefs that "he can make time work for him, and believes he can despise the Ukrainians and exhaust our European allies." The conversation, the CIA director noted, was "pretty sad."

02:47 The "DPR" announced that they created a "volunteer battalion" named after Bogdan Khmelnitsky - it was formed from Ukrainian prisoners of war.

00:36 Decrees on new Ukrainian sanctions against Russia have been published on the President's website . Thus, the National Security and Defense Council imposed restrictions against the daughters of the head of PMC Wagner Yevgeny Prigozhin Veronika and Polina, as well as against Dmitry Utkin with the call sign "Wagner", who is considered the founder of the PMC of the same name. In total, the sanctions package includes 164 individuals and 85 companies.

In addition, sanctions have been imposed against a number of organizations for facilitating the deportation of Ukrainian children to the Russian Federation. Sanctions were imposed against 109 individuals and seven organizations. Among them are the Gulfstream Charitable Foundation, the all-Russian public organization Russian Red Cross and others. Sanctions were also imposed on four representatives of the sports sector, including track and field athlete and Olympic champion Yelena Isimbayeva.

Russian aluminum will save the American economy
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Sergey Savchuk

[RIA] While the European Union agreed on the tenth package of sanctions against our country on the fourth day, another insidious blow was dealt from across the ocean. The White House announced that the United States is imposing a 200 percent duty on the import of Russian aluminum and products from March 10. This news, as usual, was immediately picked up by all sorts of free and democratic resources, presenting it as another murderous sanctions from hell.

But in order to understand the true prospects of the ongoing processes, it is necessary to know the basic numbers and mechanics of aluminum production and trade. To date, this metal is second in demand only to steel and has penetrated almost all areas of modern production, reaching a global output of 65 million tons per year.

Contrary to the crafty Western theory of the free market, where there is no place for monopoly and everything is regulated by free competition, the vast majority of specialized enterprises in any country in the world are vertically integrated holdings that include production at three key stages: bauxite mines, alumina and aluminum smelters. Russia is no exception in this regard. There are several dozen aluminum producers in our country, among which the major ones include Volgograd (VgAZ), Irkutsk (Rusal-IrkAZ), Kandalaksha (KAZ), Boguchansky (BoAZ), Novokuznetsk (NkAZ), Krasnoyarsk (Rusal Krasnoyarsk), Bratsk ("Rusal Bratsk") and Sayanogorsk (SAZ) aluminum plants. Among the medium-sized ones, one can note the Ankuver plant ( Vladivostok ).

Even with such a variety of powerful enterprises, our country is not the main world producer. This title rightfully belongs to China , which, with a huge margin from other competitors, produces about 37 million tons of aluminum in ingots and in the form of other products. Russia is in desperate competition for second place with India : both countries produced 3.6 million each in 2021. Canada is on their heels with 3.1 million tons.

And now let's look very carefully at the list of the world's main exporters of aluminum products. This will help us to meaningfully move on to the next part of our conversation.

As you might expect, China is the world's top seller. The Celestial Empire sells almost $35 billion worth of aluminum every year. Next come Germany (18.8 billion), Canada and the United States (12 billion each), India (nine billion) and only then Russia with a very modest figure of 8.7 billion dollars in turnover. About Germany some other time, but Canada and the USA are very interesting to us.

The North American team, with the support of loyal vassals in Europe , attacked the Russian Rusal with sanctions for a reason, and long before the start of the NWO. The Russian company owns the richest deposits of bauxite in many parts of the world, and it was vital for the Americans and Canadians to change this state of affairs.

At the same time, as is absolutely always the case in Western unions, all such associations are situational, unreliable, and Bolivar never takes out two.

In June 2018, then-U.S. President Donald Trump imposed sanctions on Canadian aluminum producers. Just like in the current situation with Russian metallurgists, protective duties of 250 percent were introduced on any core products. Canada then estimated its losses at $12.5 billion. Despite the ostentatious unity, the Canadians staged such a huge scandal that the very existence of the US-Canadian-Mexican trade union NAFTA was threatened . Ottawa and Mexico City directly threatened to break off trade relations with Washington , which nevertheless lifted the restrictions a year later. However, the desired result during this time was obtained.

We have repeatedly said that any geopolitical or economic event cannot be considered in isolation from other processes. The global economy is a complex system of communicating vessels, checks and balances, where major players build multi-level and multi-way strategies.

So while Western pundits and Ukrainian television are excited about the fresh sanctions against Russian aluminum, two banks that are part of the US Federal Reserve institutions have published calculations that show that the likelihood of a severe recession in the US economy in the coming months is 63 percent . This is the worst figure in the last forty years.

What follows is simple arithmetic.

As of 2022, the US imported 5.9 million tons of aluminum. Russia exported 3.5 million, of which only 21,000 tons went to the United States. At the same time, our exports to North America have been falling for a long time and systematically, while in general they are growing all over the world. According to the Federal Customs Service of Russia, in 2021 the volume of foreign deliveries increased by a third and amounted to $8.7 billion in monetary terms. The conclusion here is simple: the introduction of US duties on the Russian aluminum sector will have approximately no effect.

What is the essence of what is happening and why these gestures of the White House?

It's all pretty prosaic. As in the case of Canada three years ago, the US administration is frantically trying, if not to save its economy, then at least to minimize future problems. Blocking import routes in the presence of own production should spur a huge production cluster, a key employer and tax payer. A simple search suggests that the main consumers of aluminum in the United States are industries such as locomotive, railcar and shipbuilding, the automotive industry (remember, America is the most automotive nation in the world), the space industry, the production of electronics, construction and, of course, the production of lines transmission lines in all their vast diversity.

Just a year ago, the Biden administration launched a national infrastructure modernization program with $300 billion just to replace old power lines. That is, Washington staged a circus show for its allies, portraying unity and allegedly unbending anti-Russian will, but in reality, the price of such sanctions is worthless. And the main thing lies in something completely different, namely, in the desire to lay straws under your unpleasantly losing weight sides and turn virtual money into physical infrastructure.

The literary professor Preobrazhensky, if he lived in our time, would certainly recommend not reading Western newspapers in the morning. And if you really read, then only with complex knowledge, so as not to pass for a simple-minded fool.
Yevgeni Alekseyevich Preobrazhensky was a Soviet economist executed by Stalin in 1937.

#1  Interesting, if wordy, analysis.

#2  And as usual, there are significant lies of omission in that the Bidencrat administration is the same machine that's been kneecapping domestic aluminum production by way of energy policy over the past decade and a half.

So many faces, each coming with multiple sides of their mouth, from both Russians and Das Bidens, that we have to put up with.

#3  Doubtful. Aluminum is made where electricity is cheap since it takes a lot of it to move from bauxite. Russia had plenty of energy available as does the US (for now. Fuck you enviros)

The US imported such a small amount as most of our bauxite comes from Australia, Brazil and Canada. All friendly nations and Australian bauxite is cheaper now that they have stopped shipping theirs to China. So, we really don't need Russia.

Nice fantasy though.

'Let them eat turnips.' The fate of Europe depends on a modern Marie Antoinette
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Vladimir Kornilov

[RIA] Britain has its own Marie Antoinette. The only difference is that popular rumor unfairly attributed the phrase "They have no bread? Let them eat cakes" to the French queen. But the representative of the British government proclaimed a similar formula from the rostrum of her parliament, under television cameras and a transcript.

The fact is that Britain is now experiencing another shortage epidemic - fruits and vegetables, especially tomatoes and cucumbers, have actually disappeared from supermarket shelves . Some retail chains were forced to impose restrictions on the sale of greens in one hand, which only led to increased panic among consumers.

Deficiency epidemics have been flaring up in Albion intermittently lately. At first they were explained by the coronavirus, then they were attributed to Russia . And in the case of the current deficit, they decided to explain everything by a crop failure of vegetables in Spain and Morocco.

It is surprising that this time Russia has not yet guessed to blame.

And in these conditions, the Minister of Environment and Food Teresa Coffey, answering the questions of parliamentarians, did not find anything better than to advise diversifying the vegetable menu and eating turnips in the absence of tomatoes! She talked about the turnip, which we, in fact, call the fodder turnip.

And just before that, Coffey became famous for no less brilliant answers to farmers' questions, turning to open rudeness towards them. Regarding the shortage of vegetables, she indifferently replied that she "cannot control the weather in Spain", as if she did not understand the calls to support domestic farming. And in response to complaints about the lack of money for food among a significant part of the population, she advised those in need to work a few more hours.
If I had more energy I’d plant a Victory Garden on the front lawn, which is the only part of my small property that gets full sun. We have Burpee and other seed catalogs here — Britain has even more of that kind of thing.
The British public of late (especially after the premiership of the completely uneducated Liz Truss ) can no longer be surprised by the incompetent statements of their politicians. But the case of the minister of food shocked many. By the way, it was Truss who appointed her best friend Coffey to the post of Deputy Prime Minister (the first woman in British history to hold this post) and Minister of Health. This is despite the fact that she had no idea about the work of doctors, and is a chemist by education, besides, she graduated from the university with great difficulty due to poor grades.

Notice how many such examples are now all over Europe! Truss, Coffey, Burbock and others constantly amaze with their lack of little erudition.

Henry Kissinger drew attention to the problem of the quality of Western political leaders in his latest book, Leadership. He attributed this to the shift of residents from reading to visual culture, which causes a decline in the quality of literacy.

Although the problem is not only this. The political tradition of many Western countries implies that deputies receive their constituencies (the so-called "safe" for a particular party) in fact as a legacy and can comfortably sit on them for decades. It is enough to sort out the necessary questions in the offices of party functionaries in order for you to be nominated for a candidate in such a constituency - and you don’t have to worry about anything.

Coffey, who has little to no experience, was elected virtually uncontested in 2010 in a district that always votes Conservative. And before her, since the creation of the district in 1983, there was only one deputy there for almost three decades, who, upon reaching the age of 70, simply decided to move to a calmer House of Lords (and, by the way, is still there). That, in fact, is the whole "political struggle."

So politicians like Coffey or Burbock really don't care about their constituents. Therefore, the crisis of the modern political elites of the West is becoming more and more menacing, to which it is increasingly difficult to turn a blind eye. When Marie Antoinette was in office, such problems were solved simply - by the guillotine.

Now they cannot be solved by resignation: Coffey will come for Truss, for Coffey - some other genius who will start issuing "advice on a cosmic scale and cosmic stupidity." It would be nice if only the supermarket shelves in England depended on such incompetent people . But the fate of peace and war in Europe depends on them. And sometimes it gets really scary.

16:09 Donetsk direction situation as of February 27, 2023:

In the Avdeevka sector, over the past few days, the RF Armed Forces have expanded the zone of control near Novobakhmutovka, advancing in the direction of Novokalinovo and Alexandropol.

Further south, Russian units secured control of an important hill to the east of Krasnogorovka, improving their tactical position before assaulting UAF positions in the village. The liberation of Krasnogorovka will allow expanding the foothold north of the Avdeevsky fortified area.

At the same time, ammunition was delivered to Avdievka itself and the personnel of infantry units were rotated, additional firing points of heavy machine guns were installed.

South of Avdievka, positional battles continue in Pervomaiskoye. At the moment, the advance has stalled - both sides hold the previously occupied lines without going on the offensive.

In Maryinka, Russian troops forced out the paratroopers of the 79th Airborne Infantry Brigade of Ukraine from the streets of Blagodatnaya and Heroes of Chernobyl, completely gaining a foothold on the southern outskirts of the city near Druzhby Avenue. Partially from Marinka and Georgievka, the forces of 79 Brigade were withdrawn for restoration and rest.

To the south, the Armed Forces of Ukraine strengthened their positions in Pobeda. Three armored vehicles "Kozak" with personnel were deployed to the village, machine-gun crews were placed on the heights, and approaches to strong points were controlled from copters.

In the second echelon in Galitsynivka and Shevchenko, tank groups of the 59th Motorized Infantry Brigade and one detachment of the Armed Forces of Ukraine are deployed. Units of the 59th Brigade are in reserve in Galitsinovka in case of a breakthrough of positions on the front line.

Positional battles continue in the Ugledar sector. After the breakthrough to the Nikolsky dachas, the forces of the 72nd Ombre of the Armed Forces of Ukraine went on the defensive, and the marines of the 155th Naval Infantry Brigade of the Pacific Fleet of the RF Armed Forces are fighting in the dachas near Ugledar.

In Ugledar, additional positions of ATGMs of the 72nd Ombre were equipped, and reserves of the 68th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were deployed to Bogoyavlenka in the event of a breakthrough. In addition, Ukrainian mobile air defense groups ZU-23 based on the Mitsubishi L200 are operating at the Bogoyavlenka-Ugledar line.

A newly created unit of mobilized people arrived in Bogatyr from the training ground in Temirovka in the Zaporozhye region, and advanced depots of rocket and artillery weapons were placed in Novoukrainka and Bogoyavlenka.

15:55 According to the operational lines of the DPR JCCC for February 27, information was received about victims among civilians in the cities of the Republic:

Donetsk (Petrovsky district): - on the street. Brinko, 1 "e" wounded teenage girl born in 2010

15:29 The Armed Forces of Ukraine continue artillery attacks on the civilian population of the left bank of the Kherson region.

Tonight, Alyoshek was shelled - as a result, local tire shops suffered. On cadres. The building appears to have been badly damaged. It is reported that local residents kept their cars there to protect them from arrivals.

14:49 On the operational lines of the DPR JCCC for February 27, additional information was received about damage as a result of artillery attackof the Ukrainian cities of the Republic:

Donetsk (Petrovsky district):

- damage was recorded to the building of the Mriya store on the street. Brinko;
- st. Kobzar, 78 - a private residential building;
- st. Worsted, 41 "a" / 2 - a private residential building.

14:17 Tactical encirclement of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Artyomovsk (Bakhmut): what is known at the moment:

After mopping up Blagodatny, Krasnaya Gora, Paraskovievka, Berkhovka and Yagodnoye north of Artyomovsk (Bakhmut), the front line shifts to the west. Gradually, there is an advance towards the area, which the military among themselves call the "rhombus" - this is the line of fortified areas between Grigorovka, Orekhovo-Vasilevka, Novomarkovo, Markov, Bogdanovka and Dubovo-Vasilevka.

There, the Armed Forces of Ukraine tried to regroup after the loss of Berkhovka, and basically from there, disturbing fire is being fired at the units advancing on Artyomovsk from the north. In the same place, in the Novomarkov area, there is a road along which Chasov Yar is supplied from Kramatorsk and Slavyansk, bypassing the main E-40 highway, part of which is under the fire control of the RF Armed Forces.

Highway O-0506 Khromovo - Chasov Yar, which until recently was almost the only supply artery for the Artyomovsk garrison of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, is currently under the direct fire control of ATGM crews deployed on a number of dominant heights near Berkhovka.

The use of bypass roads is difficult due to bad weather. Temperature fluctuations and precipitation have washed away the coating, which neither wheeled nor tracked vehicles can move on.

To the south, in the Krasnoy (Ivanovskoye) area, there is an advance towards the APU oporniks, with the help of which the section of the T-0504 highway between Artyomovsk, Krasny, Nikolaevka and Chasovy Yar is held. The road itself has been under fire control for a month, but there is no physical control over it yet.

Under the fire control of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the roads Bogdanovka - Kalinovka, Artyomovskoye - Chasov Yar, Stupochki - Konstantinovka, Konstantinovka - Belaya Gora, Konstantinovka - Dachnoye, Konstantinovka - Toretsk.

In the area of Konstantinovka, the activity of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is higher than in the Bakhmutsky area - the enemy uses artillery of 152mm and 155mm caliber, actively works with 122mm BM-21 Grads. The supply of the garrison of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Chasovoy Yar is intermittent - artillery and aviation strikes have killed the railway track near the villages of Popasnoe and Stenki.

14:10 Ukrainian soldiers who laid down their arms are actively are recorded volunteer battalion named after Bogdan Khmelnitsky and seek to obtain Russian citizenship.

13:44 Ukrainian troops fired on the Petrovsky district of Donetsk, fired four rounds with a caliber of 155mm, the DPR representative office at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC) reported.

13:28 Ugledar, Dacha district. Combat work of naval infantry of the 155th brigade to storm and clear houses.

12:53 The chances of Ukrainian troops in Artemovsk getting surrounded after the dam was blown up have increased significantly, Pushilin said. He noted that, in fact, by undermining the dam, the Ukrainian military created difficulties for themselves.

12:15 On the operational lines of the DPR JCCC for February 27, additional information was received about damage as a result of artillery attackof the Ukrainian cities of the Republic:

Donetsk (Petrovsky district): - Damage was recorded to the building of the MBOU "School No. 108 in Donetsk" on the street. Ruben Ibarruri.

Ukrainian units with great difficulty are still holding back the onslaught "on the Avdeevsky and Shakhtyorsky directions - in the areas of the settlements of Kamenka, Avdeevka, Vodyane, Nevelskoye, Krasnogorovka, Marinka and Vugledar."

11:28 Footage of offensive fighters of the Russian Federation in the Svatovsky direction.

11:20 Photo and video consequences of APU strikes on New Kakhovka.

Not only Novaya Kakhovka, but also Dnieper and Korsunka were shelled by Ukrainian artillery. Everywheredestroyedhouses, shops, substations, as well as power lines. There are people injured.

11:15 According to the operational lines of the DPR JCCC for February 27, information was received about damage as a result of artillery attack of the VFU cities of the Republic:

11:10 Ukrainian troops fired at the Kirovsky and Petrovsky districts of Donetsk, fired eight rounds with a caliber of 155mm, the DPR representative office at the Joint Center for Control and Coordination of Issues Related to War Crimes of Ukraine (JCCC) reported.

11:06 Battle for Artemovsk (27.02.23) — Bohdanovka:

Judging by operational information, the situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine to the north of Artemovsk worsened even more overnight. Taking advantage of the fog that covered the area, Wagner PMCs advanced towards Bogdanovka and it is possible that battles for this settlement will begin today.

11:01 Recently, it has been very difficult for the Nazis to get into Artemovsk (Bakhmut). All roads are under fire control. Thisarmored carI tried to jump, it didn't work. The shell exploded next to the car. The result is 2-300,1-200 and minus an armored car. Video 18+ on the frames there is profanity.

When sanctions hit in the wrong direction
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military blogger Andrey Chervonets:

This Live Journal post is a follow up to this article.

In Russia, foreigners are stuck with a "bunch of billions of dollars" that the owners cannot access, writes Bloomberg

Dividends on stocks, bond coupons and assets that Western investors did not sell before the conflict in Ukraine broke out were part of the huge amount of money that was stuck in Russia due to sanctions.

The imposed restrictions prevent the withdrawal of these assets from Russia. Legally, the money is owned by major investment firms, including JPMorgan Asset Management and Schroders, but in private conversations, most of them admit that there is no hope of returning these funds. As a result, some foreign companies decided to put up with "and forget" about the money, and some agree to lose part of the funds when withdrawing the principal amount

At a press conference this month, central bank chief Elvira Nabiullina declined to disclose how much money is held in special non-resident bank accounts, known as Type C, but said it continues to rise.

Prigozhin's speech to the prisoners
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. Link to video supplied by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin.

I post the second of two videos in which Wagner proprietor speaks to some prisoners in his pitch for them to join Wagner. The video is translatable, but much of it isn't a very good translation. The highlights in the video are two:

1) He laments the demise of the Soviet Union.

2) He states that the chances of being a casualty in Wagner are less than one percent.

The prisoners seem to be attentive and very much receptive to his pitch.

Unexplained explosions around Russian-occupied Mariupol since Tuesday
I suspect bombs.
You do have a suspicious mind, to be sure. It could be propane tanks in the kitchens — that seems to happen a lot in Turkey, for some reason.
[Jpost] Sites caught in explosions include an ammo cache at an airport, two fuel deports, and a makeshift military base.

For a week pro-Russian officials have been reporting unexplained explosions of military assets in Russian-occupied Mariupol, the UK Defense Ministry said in a Monday morning intelligence briefing.

UK intelligence has counted at least 14 explosion reports since Tuesday around Mariupol, which it says is almost 80 kilometers away from the front lines.

Sites caught in explosions include an ammo cache at an airport, two fuel deports, and a makeshift military base.

"Russia will likely be concerned that unexplained explosions are occurring in a zone it had probably previously assessed as beyond the range of routine Ukrainian strike capabilities," assessed the UK Defense Ministry. "Although widely devastated earlier in the war, Mariupol is important to Russia because it is the. largest city Russia captured in 2022 that it still controls, and sits on a key logistics route.

The Ukrainian government has been lobbying Allies for longer-range munitions over the course of recent months. NATO states have been hesitant to acquiesce to Kyiv’s requests, fearing that strikes with sovereign Russian territory would lead to an escalation in the conflict.

While the MGM-140 Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) requested by Kyiv has remained off the aid package lists, In early February, the US announced that it would be supplying Ukraine with ground-launched small-diameter bombs, which can strike targets 150 kilometers away.

Pentagon Press Secretary Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder on Friday said that the most recent US aid package would contain additional ammunition for high mobility artillery rocket systems, additional 155mm artillery shells, munitions for laser-guided rocket systems, as well as drones and loitering munitions such as 600 Switchblade UAS.

Ukraine has previously utilized drones to strike deep within occupied Russian territory or even undisputed federation provinces. Such attacks with kamikaze aerial and naval drones have targeted as far as Black Sea Fleet bases in Crimea’s Sevastopol and Novorssiysk.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday reiterated Ukrainian claims to Crimea and all disputed territories occupied by Russia.

Mariupol resides within the Donetsk region claimed by pro-Russian separatists and annexed by Russia. It is strategically located on the Sea of Azov.

#1  1500 troops mostly volunteers from Mariupol. 400 actual Russian troops. Ukraine wants to invade as they consider this an easy hit plus the huge stockpile of munitions stored there. Russian area of Mariupol target of Western area of Mariupol who's leadership happens to be pro western.

#2  Not necessarily related to Mariupol, but is looks like Ukraine has gotten their GPS guided UAVs sorta working. In the last 24 hours:
1. Attack on oil refinery in Tuapse Russia. ~600km
2. Ukr UJ-22 UAV crashed near Moscow.

Also a UFO closed airspace near St Petersburg. Not necessarily Ukrainian.

The Tuapse attack shows the GPS guided terminal dive has not been perfected. Missed nearby oil storage tanks and one hit a building, causing a fire.

Putin's £274million spy plane 'is destroyed in drone attack near Minsk by pro-Ukraine Belarus group'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] A £274million Russian spy plane has reportedly been destroyed in a drone attack near Minsk by a pro-Ukraine Belarus group.

Belarusian partisans and members of the country's exiled opposition said they damaged Vladimir Putin
" ...President-for-Life of Russia. He gets along well with other presidents for life. He is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law, which occasionally results in somebody dropping dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substance. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to him. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile or dead from poisoning by polonium or other interesting substances...
's A-50U surveillance military aircraft in a secret mission.

Two participants had used drones and had already left the country, claimed Franak Viacorka, a close adviser of opposition figurehead Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya.

Front and central parts of the AWACS Beriev A-50U aircraft as well as the radar antenna were damaged from two explosions at the Machulishchy air base near Minsk, Belarusian anti-government organization BYPOL claimed.

'Partisans... confirmed a successful special operation to blow up a rare Russian plane at the airfield in Machulishchy near Minsk,' tweeted Viacorka. 'This is the most successful diversion since the beginning of 2022.'

#4  This story has been out there a while. All we do know is the plane is destroyed and a anti-Russian group took credit. They have been getting more and more active since the war started and I would bet money they are getting support from western powers.

#5  Just finished reading John Plaster's SOG: The Secret Wars of America's Commandos in Vietnam." To retain deniability for operations in disallowed areas, SOG used to attribute intelligence it had collected or events that SOG was involved in to the "FGU," that is, Friendly Guerilla Unit.

Maybe something like that in this instance too.

#10  What's good for the goose...

Same goons will cry foul if Russia starts targeting sponsored/gifted ukr military assets in 'neutral' European Countries.

That'd be so rich, hitting the trains used to transport the tanks and other mil assets to ukr. But we know how Article 51 would be used and invoked.

#11  Points: Is it flyable to get it to repairs? Can the Ilyushin boys get the parts to fix it?
This is 1/6 of the russian airborne warning fleet. In the USAF, the rule has been that you have to have six aircraft to keep one in the air continuously. The A-50U's contribution to the events so far is to provide look down radar of Uke poitions and movement. So there's possible holes in the coverage now.
