#2  Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie are separating and have signed a legal agreement to that effect, the prime minister said in a statement on social media Wednesday.

The couple had been married for 18 years.

#4  Pierre Poilievre took a shot at Trudeau in Parliament about a month ago concerning Justin’s unusual departure from the teaching profession. Trudeau has always seemed more of a media creation than a leader to me. Like Biden and Obama, Justin is somebody’s puppet, and not a particularly effective one due to his immaturity and narcissism. He was exposed as a tyrant during Covid and the trucker protests.

Again, we must ask for your help. Update 8/2: last day?
The last time as almost six months ago, with Fred beginning to help out.

Now, almost six months later, he continues to work Rantburg.

I have to think it was financial help from readers and regulars like you who helped enable that improvement.

As to the health of Rantburg, we are as busy as we have been since 2021. Comments and articles are about at the same level as they were three years ago.

We continue to be a close knit, vibrant community; people appear here who want to seek the truth and who want to argue their positions. We square off, most of the time never coming to understanding, but always willing to let everyone who comments here have a voice.

Looking back ten years ago, Rantburg of today is very much like it was then, almost. With your continued help it will continue to be so.

I have established a Discord server. Discord is a chat/voice chat system normally used by gamers and the like. I established this Discord for Rantburg.com for emergencies. You can find it here

And of course, there's always the Wheelus Machine Shop, which is also there for emergencies.

There are several ways to contribute;

1) Paypal, link is on the right sidebar. Not the button, but the link just above it.
2) Zelle
3) You can ask for his mail address and mail him some money that way.

2 August: If we hit our goal, enough to keep the Burg running for the next six months or so, today will be the last day this bleg is posted. Go Team Rantburg!

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief August 2, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • HOUSE INSPECTIONS REPORTED IN NORTHERN KABUL NEIGHBORHOODS AND MAZAR-I-SHARIF – Taliban security forces and GDI agents launched house-to-house searches in both cities yesterday. It was not immediately clear what prompted the searches. In Mazar-i-Sharif, the searches took place mainly in the Aryana neighborhood, and search teams included female Taliban members who questioned women in the households closely. In Kabul, women were not present for the reported searches. Locals said the searches were more thorough than those conducted earlier in 2023. It is possible the Taliban were reacting to intelligence gleaned from the two counter-ISIS operations it conducted last week.

  • PAKISTAN SAYS EARLY INVESTIGATION INTO THE BAJAUR BOMBING INVOLVES AFGHANISTAN – Yesterday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asked Taliban officials to do a better job of cutting off Afghanistan-based terror groups from the border. After ISIS-K announced it had planned and executed the deadly bombing at Bajaur, Pakistan’s government determined that the sub-group responsible was traditionally based in Afghanistan. The Prime Minister and others in the government expressed frustration over the continued cross-border threats they are facing and offered more security cooperation if the Taliban requested assistance. For their part, the Taliban have continued denying that any threats emanate from Afghan soil. The continued denials of existing terror threats in Afghanistan are falling on deaf ears.

  • PAKISTANI SECURITY FORCES ELIMINATE SUSPECTED TERRORISTS IN BAJAUR – Officials say that Pakistani security personnel caught 2 men attempting to cut their way through the fence along the Durand Line and a firefight ensued. 1 man was killed while the other is said to have made his way back to the Afghan side of the border. Security officials said they seized US-made weapons, drugs, and ammunition from the dead fighter. The man who was killed was identified as Lal Mir and was said to be a resident of Kunar Province.

Parwan: A group purporting to be the Afghan Revolutionary Guards Front claimed to have assassinated 1 Talib fighter in the Koh Safi district yesterday evening.

SLM faction joins Sudanese army against RSF in Darfur
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Mustafa Tambour, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM-Tambour), announced on Monday the movement’s active involvement in the conflict alongside the Sudanese army against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Darfur.

Tambour told the Sudan Tribune that during the recent battles in Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, his forces had inflicted casualties on the paramilitary forces.

He stated, "68 members of the Rapid Support Forces were killed or maimed."

Since the conflict erupted between the army and the RSF in mid-April, the SLM-Tambour has pledged its support to the armed forces in their efforts against the RSF. This stance sets the movement apart from other groups in Darfur, some of which have signed peace agreements, while others remain neutral.

On July 17, the RSF assassinated one of Mustafa Tambour’s brothers on the Nyala-Zalingi road due to his involvement with the army against him.

During the battles in Zalingei that have intensified since the beginning of July, Tambour’s group inflicted heavy casualties on the RSF, with 68 members killed or maimed during the pasttwo days.

"Our forces participated with the army in the battles during the past two days in Zalingei, which led to the killing of 27, the wounding of 41, and the capture of 14 members of the Rapid Support militia," he said.

He further added that fierce confrontations took place at Abu Bakr al-Siddiq School in the Hasahsa neighbourhood, a base used by the militia to threaten citizens, resulting in significant losses and the destruction of seven four-wheel-drive vehicles.

He said that the RSF fled after a major defeat, and he further emphasized, "Our forces are still aligned with the army."

"Our forces will not withdraw until the end of this brutal rebellion that wanted to hijack the state had it not been for the vigilance of our national army," he asserted.

It’s worth noting that the SLM-Tambour joined the Juba Peace Agreement with the Sudanese government, signed in Juba on March 25, 2021. The movement split from the Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Abdel Wahid Nur (SLM-AW), in 2018.

India-Pakistan
SIU attaches property of Pakistan based terrorist in Kupwara

The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
Police on Tuesday attached property of a terrorist, operating from Pakistain, in Kupwara district of north Kashmir.

Quoting a statement, news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reported that the land measuring 6 Kanals and 3 Marla belonging to one Adul Rashid Qureshi alias Farooq Qureshi of Kachama Kupwara who is operating from Pakistain was attached by the SIU Kupwara.

"Following extensive intelligence gathering and meticulous investigations in case FIR No.276/2022 of Police Station Kupwara registered under sections 120-B, 121, 121-A, 122, 123 IPC & 17, 18, 18-A, 18-B, 20, 38, 39, 40 of UA(P)A, the SIU led to the identification and subsequent attachment of the terrorist's land measuring 6 Kanals and 3 Marlas located at multiple locations within the district at village Kachama," read the statement.

It said that this measure taken by the Police aims to disrupt his illicit network and restrict his ability to carry out further acts of terror.

"Farooq Qureshi has been a persistent threat to peace and security of tJammu and Kashmir since he exfiltrated to Pakistain in early 1990s. He is a member of al-Barq terror outfit and presently operating from PoJK as launching commander. His strategic involvement in numerous acts of terror has caused immense suffering and loss of innocent lives in the valley in the past."

It added that Jammu and Kashmir Police has been actively pursuing his acts to bring an end to his destructive activities.

"The attachment of the property serves as a strong message to holy warriors and their supporters that their actions will not go unnoticed or unpunished. It underscores the unwavering commitment of Police to combating terrorism at its roots and dismantling its infrastructure," it read.

Indian railway security official shoots dead senior officer, 3 Muslim passengers in ‘hate crime’
India is an interesting place.
[Dawn] A security official of the Indian railway rubbed out his senior and three Moslem passengers in an apparent "hate crime", reported local media outlet The Wire.

"A Railway Protection Force (RPF) jawan (officer) on Monday morning (July 31) rubbed out four people who were on a train near the Palghar railway station in Maharashtra. Among those killed was an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and three passengers — all Moslem men with beards — across nine carriages," the report stated, adding that the culprit was arrested.

It said the culprit was identified as RPF Constable Chetan Singh. Quoting other Indian media outlets, the report added that he first shot his senior officer before moving on to the passengers.

The Hindustan Times reported that after killing the fourth victim, he "began a short hate-filled rant against Moslems that he asked the bystanders to record for the media’s consumption".

The Wire added that according to a purported video of the culprit speaking after killing the fourth victim, he could be heard saying: "They (Moslems) operate from Pakistain, this is what the media of the country is showing, they have found out, they know everything, their leaders are there ... If you want to vote, if you want to live in India, then I say, Modi and Yogi, these are the two, and your Thackeray."

According to the report, the incident was allegedly triggered by an argument between the suspect and his senior officer.

The RPF, the report stated, would compensate the heirs and families of the victims.

Conspiracy theories that allege a Moslem plot to secure the faith’s numerical supremacy in India have been a staple of Hindu nationalist ideologues for years. Similar theories of immigrants colonists and minorities "replacing" majority populations have also been embraced by the far-right in other countries.

At times the theories have been indulged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has come to dominate national politics partly through its muscular appeals to the country’s Hindu majority.

Raqib Hameed Naik, the founder of Hindutva Watch, a group that monitors reports of attacks on Indian minorities, had said during Modi’s visit to the United States in June that "Modi’s comments [that there is no religious discrimination by his government] is a complete lie. India has become a black hole for religious minorities."

6 Israelis wounded, one seriously, in terror shooting in Ma’ale Adumim
[IsraelTimes] Off-duty officer kills Paleostinian terrorist in a shootout outside mall in West Bank settlement city; worker at burger joint says ’bullet flew by my face,’ another hit a customer

Six Israelis were shot and maimed, one of them seriously, in a terror attack in the West Bank settlement city of Ma’ale Adumim on Tuesday afternoon, police and medical officials said. According to law enforcement officials, the Paleostinian terrorist shot up a group of people, including diners at a burger restaurant, in a plaza outside a main shopping mall in the settlement, before being rubbed out by an off-duty police officer while attempting to flee the scene.

The Magen David Adom (MDA) ambulance service said one of the victims, a man in his 40s, was listed at death's door. Four victims — a 14-year-old boy and men aged 28, 29 and 37 — were listed in moderate condition, MDA said. Another man in his 20s was lightly hurt, according to hospital officials. The six were taken to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center and Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus in Jerusalem for treatment.

A Paleostinian man who allegedly attempted to stab soldiers in the southern West Bank on Tuesday was rubbed out, the military said.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, an officer and her driver who were passing by a bus station at the Eshtamoa Junction, close to the West Bank settlement of Shim’a, spotted a suspect and decided to turn around to question him.

When they stopped to question the Paleostinian suspect, he pulled out a knife and tried to stab the officer and the soldier, the IDF said.

The IDF said the soldier shot the suspect in response. Military medics declared his death at the scene.

The alleged assailant was not immediately named.

There were no other injuries in the attack, which came hours after a Paleostinian terrorist carried out a shooting attack in the Ma’ale Adumim settlement near Jerusalem that left six Israelis hurt, before being rubbed out by a Border Police officer.

Tensions have remained high in the West Bank, with the military carrying out near-nightly raids amid a series of deadly Paleostinian terror attacks in Israel and the West Bank that have killed 25 people since the beginning of the year.

According to a tally by The Times of Israel, 162 West Bank Paleostinians have been killed since the beginning of the year — most of them during festivities with security forces or while carrying out attacks, but some were uninvolved civilians and others were killed under unclear circumstances.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Clashes continue to rock Ain al-Helweh camp Tuesday
[AnNahar] Fruit and vegetable seller Ismail Akkawi had no choice but to brave days of intermittent but deadly fighting in Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
's biggest Paleostinian refugee camp in order to make ends meet.

The produce market at the heart of the restive Ain al-Helweh camp -- in the southern coastal city of Sidon -- is usually bustling with vendors, but few have ventured out since festivities broke out in the camp late Saturday.

"I have to leave the house, despite the horrific circumstances for selling vegetables," said Akkawi, who is in his sixties.

If the violence continues, "who will put food on the table for me and my family?" he asked.

Outbreaks of violence are common in the camp, but 11 people have been killed in the current flare-up -- the worst in years, pitting members of Paleostinian President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
...aka Abu Mazen, a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial. While no Yasser Arafat, he has his own brand of evil, just a little more lowercase....
' Fatah movement and Islamist holy warriors.

It is not yet known why the latest festivities broke out.

Ain al-Helweh is home to more than 54,000 registered refugees. It was created for Paleostinians who were driven out or fled during the 1948 war that coincided with Israel's creation.

Thousands of Paleostinians who sought refuge from Syria's civil war have also joined the camp in recent years.

Paleostinian factions said they had agreed on a truce on Sunday but it failed to hold, and fighting continued on Monday and Tuesday with automatic weapons and rockets being used.

Deserted buildings stand riddled with bullet holes on the front lines, while charred cars litter the camp's southern district of Hittin, which witnessed festivities and shelling.

- FEAR OF SHORTAGES -
Bread vendor Mukhtar, 62, said panicked residents were stocking up on supplies.

"People are buying two bags of bread, fearing shortages due to the security situation," he said, declining to give his surname.

The fighting has prompted the United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
to suspend its activities in Ain al-Helweh, while shops and public institutions have also closed in Sidon, the largest city in southern Lebanon.

"Arrangements are under way to establish a serious ceasefire," senior Fatah official Mounir Makdah told AFP on Tuesday.

Paleostinian security forces are working "to remove the button men from the streets and form an investigation committee" to identify those responsible for the violence, he added.

"All factions have collectively decided to hold perpetrators of breaches and security incidents to account," Makdah said.

Tiny Lebanon hosts an estimated 250,000 Paleostinian refugees, according to UNRWA, the U.N. agency for Paleostinian refugees.

Most live in one of Lebanon's 12 official camps, and face a variety of legal restrictions, including on employment.

By long-standing convention, the Lebanese Army does not enter Paleostinian refugee camps, leaving the factions themselves to handle security.

Asayish, Coalition arrest ISIS prominent official in Deir ez-Zor
[NPASyria] The Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) announced on Monday the arrest of a prominent official of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) in Deir ez-Zor Governorate in eastern Syria.

The arrest took place with air support of the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS.

The Asayish said that their Counter-terrorism Units, locally known as HAT, with air support by the Coalition raided a hideout of an ISIS "emir" in Deir ez-Zor countryside and managed to arrest him.

The ISIS "emir" was in charge of financing the group to attack the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), the Asayish said in a statement.

The AANES was first formed in 2014 in the Kurdish-majority regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira in northern Syria following the withdrawal of the government forces. Later, it was expanded to Manbij, Tabqa, Raqqa, Hasakah and Deir ez-Zor after the SDF defeated ISIS militarily there.

A source from the Asayish noted that the operation was done via an airdrop, adding that they seized weapons and telecommunication devices.

ISIS lost its final stronghold in Syria in March 2019. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), with the support of the US-led Global Coalition, defeated ISIS after fierce battles in the town of Baghouz in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, bringing an end to the so-called caliphate declared by the terrorist ISIS.

After Baghouz, thousands of ISIS members were transferred to prisons, while their families were transferred to Hawl and Roj camps in the AANES-held areas.

Drone strikes former member of opposition in Syria’s Daraa
[NPASyria] A drone of the Syrian government forces targeted on Monday night a house in Daraa Governorate in southern Syria.

The targeted house was in the town of al-Yaduda, west of Daraa, and it was owned by former leader of the Syrian opposition, Amjad al-Mez’el, a local source told North Press.

The attack resulted in material damage without causing casualties, the source said, adding that this was not the first time where the government forces use drones.

Daraa Governorate has been living in a state of chaos since the government forces entered it in 2018, with liquidations and robberies taking place on a daily basis, in addition to turning into a hub for drug trafficking.

In July 2018, the armed opposition factions and the government forces reached a ceasefire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas of Daraa. Under the deal, the opposition factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, while those who opposed the agreement, they were sent to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

Two members of pro-government militia wounded in Deir ez-Zor city
[NPASyria] Two members of the National Defense Forces (NDF), a pro-Syrian government militia, were shot at and maimed by unidentified button men in the city of Deir ez-Zor, eastern Syria.

A military source from the NDF in Deir ez-Zor city said that two unknown button men riding a cycle of violence opened fire on two bandidos bandidos Death Eaters who work as guards for NDF commander Firas al-Jaham with machine guns while the members were touring the city of Deir ez-Zor on a cycle of violence.

He added to North Press that the attack resulted in one member being shot twice in the hip and hand, while the other was shot in the foot. They were subsequently taken to a field hospital in the city. "One of them is in a critical condition and the other is in good health."

NDF patrols imposed a curfew in neighborhoods near the scene, seized cycle of violences and burned three of them, according to the source.

NGO reveals violations of Turkish forces, SNA in Syria’s Afrin
[NPASyria] PÊL—Civil Waves organization has recently conducted 90 face-to-face interviews with Kurdish and Yazidi victims of property rights violations committed by Ottoman Turkish-backed armed opposition factions, aka Syrian National Army (SNA), in Afrin region, northwest Syria.

The witnesses testified to recurrent systematic and widespread ethnic-based property rights violations against civilians who did not take part in any fighting. The violations included arbitrary seizure, destruction, and looting of civilian homes, businesses, and agricultural land with crops and livestock.

PÊL—Civil Waves organization, based in northeast Syria, was established to activate the role of different societal groups in political, social and economic life, to launch initiatives and projects that seek to consolidate coexistence and peace, and to provide an appropriate climate to activate civil life in society.

Witnesses’ accounts reflected the de facto powers’ inaction towards these violations and their disregard for the victims. In turn, the victims do not dare to claim their rights, given intimidation by the SNA factions in light of the state of lawlessness in the region.

In addition, no judicial, administrative, or implementing solutions are available to protect or redress the victims, according to the report.

The Kurdish city of Afrin has been under the occupation of the Ottoman Turkish forces and the SNA factions since March 2018 following the so-called "Olive Branch" military operation to push away the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) under the pretext of protecting "Ottoman Turkish national security."

The operation caused the displacement of about 300,000 of the original inhabitants of the Kurds of Afrin who have been taking shelter in 42 villages and five camps in Aleppo northern countryside, locally known as Shahba region, since then.

Seizing civilians’ properties, mainly the Kurds and Yazidis, combined with arrests, beating, and threats, led to mass waves of displacement, contributing to a serious demographic change in the area.

The witnesses reported 18 cases of fully or partially damaged houses belonging to the witnesses themselves or their relatives or neighbors.

PÊL documented the seizure of 124 residential houses, 47 real estates, and businesses, 13 private cars, 9 tractors and other agricultural machinery, 20 cycle of violences, and 10 industrial factories machineries by the Ottoman Turkish forces and the SNA factions.

The organization documented the seizure of 37,856 olive trees, 9,340 fruit trees and grape vines, and 245 livestock, as well as the loot of 653 tanks of olive oil and three tons of laurel oil soap.

Additionally, the witnesses confirmed the cut of at least 2,764 trees as well as the burn of 270 fruit trees belonging to the witnesses and their families.

Only in one out of the 90 documented cases, the victim managed to regain his seized house. While the rest did not dare to claim their property for fear of being beaten, arrested, or insulted, as done to those who tried to do that before, according to the report.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
failed to fulfill its obligations as an occupying power in Afrin, including the protection of civilians and their property, the report read.

These violations constitute clear breaches of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) and the Geneva Conventions, and in most cases, they amount to war crimes.

Similar handovers are conducted regularly, with no information available regarding the rationale behind them or the fate of fighters involved.

In late July, HTS handed over two foreign al-Qaeda leaders to Ottoman Turkish intelligence at the Bab al-Hawa border crossing, following 18 months of detainment in its prisons.
