Suicide blast near Afghan foreign ministry, more than 20 casualties
[IsraelTimes] A jacket wallah detonates a device near Afghanistan’s foreign ministry in the capital, causing more than 20 casualties, an AFP staff member says.

Images from the scene show people lying in the snow in the street outside the central Kabul building.

"I don’t know how many of them were dead or injured," AFP driver Jamshed Karimi says, adding: "I saw the man blow himself up."

Kabul police front man Khalid Zadran confirms the earth-shattering kaboom "which unfortunately resulted in casualties."

"Security teams have reached the area," he tweets.
There’s a tweet at the link with an image from perhaps the sixth floor of a building up the street, which claims “Suicide bombing leaves 12 dead & more injured outside Afghanistan's Foreign Affairs HQ in Kabul.” Unfortunately I can’t remember the password I used when I signed up several years ago, so I can’t embed it here for y’all. Reports from Khaama Press and Tolo News as of noon Wednesday:

Blast Happened Near Foreign Ministry in Kabul

[ToloNews] A blast took place in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in downtown Kabul on Wednesday afternoon.

At least five non-combatants were killed and several others were maimed in the blast, a front man for the Kabul security department, Khalid Zadran, said.

He said the Islamic Emirate condemns such "heinous" attacks and will punish the perpetrators.

He said the earth-shattering kaboom happened on the street of the Foreign Ministry.

Zadran added that security forces have arrived at the scene.

Photos from the blast scene on social media show bodies of victims on the street.

Victims of the blast near the foreign ministry in Kabul were taken to the Emergency Hospital.

TOLOnews' footage shows some residents of Kabul waiting outside the hospital, looking for their relatives who have been harmed in the blast.

No group has grabbed credit for the blast.

Explosion Happened Near the Entrance of Foreign Affairs Ministry in Kabul

[KhaamaPress] A kaboom took place near the entrance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul earlier today, according to local sources.

Kabul Police Spokesperson, Khalid Zadran, in a tweet said that the earth-shattering kaboom happened in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the heart of Kabul today (Wednesday), causing casualties.

Mr. Zadran said the security personnel has arrived at the scene, and investigations are underway, however, he did not provide any details on the number of casualties.

Although Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
faceless myrmidons have been behind terror attacks in the recent past, no group has claimed the responsibility for the blast so far.

The security situation has tanked in Kabul and other major cities of Afghanistan in the recent past. Targeted attacks, suicide kabooms, and gun firing have occurred in several locations taking the lives of security officials and innocent civilians.

Since the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
’s return to power in August 2021, there have not been any major improvements in terms of security. The optimism the general public had with the re-emergence of Afghanistan’s interim administration is gradually fading.

Update from Afghan Digest at 2:15 a.m. ET:
SUICIDE BOMBER TARGETS MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS IN KABUL – A suicide bomb attack near the entrance to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs occurred at approximately 1600hrs local yesterday. Casualty figures are in dispute with news outlets reporting between 5-20 were killed in the blast. An additional 20-30 were thought to have been wounded. The timing of the blast occurred during the area’s busiest part of the day. It is believed the suicide bomber was attempting to enter the Ministry but detonated his device when he was interdicted by security personnel. ISIS-K claimed responsibility for the attack on the group’s Telegram channel (Amaq news agency). No further information was available.

And from Sky News, just after midnight UK time, so 7:38 p.m ET:
A suicide bomb attack outside the foreign ministry in Afghanistan's capital Kabul has killed at least five people and injured many others, a police spokesperson has said.

Kabul police spokesperson Khalid Zadran said the official confirmed death toll was five, while Ustad Fareedun, an official at the Taliban-run information ministry, said 20 people were killed.

The attacker had planned to enter the ministry but did not succeed, a Taliban spokesman said.

A photo of the area posted on social media showed at least nine people who had been wounded or killed outside the building as security forces attended to them.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, the militant group's Amaq news agency said in an affiliated Telegram channel.

The blast hit around 4pm local time (11am GMT), Mr Zadran said. He said officials were investigating.

The Taliban-run government has been fighting an insurgency by Islamic State militants who have targeted foreigners at sites such as the Russian and Pakistani embassies, as well as a hotel catering to Chinese businessmen.

The explosion happened at a busy time of the day in a heavily-fortified area, which is surrounded by checkpoints. The street houses several ministries.

It was the second prominent attack in Kabul so far this year. In an earlier attack, Islamic State claimed responsibility for a bombing near a checkpoint at the city's military airport that killed and wounded several people. No official casualty figures have been released so far.

Dawn adds:
Another Taliban official, Ahmadullah Mutaqqi, brother of Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mutaqqi, said the incident occurred when the majority of foreign ministry officials were away and thus the casualties were fewer.

He denied social media reports that the blast took place when Taliban officials were holding a meeting with Chinese officials. “There was no meeting in the ministry,” Ahmadullah added.

Roadside explosive kills 3 Kenha engineers, one more person in Bura
[NATION] Four people died on Wednesday after the vehicle they were travelling in hit an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on the Lapsset road in Bura East, Tana River County.

Three of the victims are said to be staff of Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).

"A convoy of Kenha engineers in three vehicles who were on routine assessment of the Lapsset road were attacked by suspected al- Shabaab who had placed an IED on the old Lapsset road which went kaboom! destroying the first vehicle," apolice signal seen by Nation.africa stated.

The vehicle, a Toyota Hilux Double-Cabin, was completely wrecked in the blast.

The team was travelling from Garissa to Hailey Chinese Camp then to Bura East.

However,

following the attack, drivers of the other vehicles returned to Hailey Camp.

"Three bodies were found and it is believed the body of the fourth person was completely destroyed in the vehicle," a police signal read.

Also in the Nyongoro area, a Rocket-Propelled Grenade(RPG) missed a General Service Unit vehicle but no officer was injured in the incident according to a police source.

The attacks come barely a week after Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki directed the immediate recruitment, training, arming, and deployment of 100 National Police Reservists (NPR) to all insecure villages as a measure to curb insecurity in the neighbouring Lamu County.

The movement of herders and their livestock from other counties such as Tana River, Garissa, and Wajir to Lamu was also stopped until further notice.

Last year, the suspected al-Shabaab

unleashed a number of attacks that saw the government suspending the construction of the Lamu-Ijara-Garissa Lapsset corridor access road for two months before resuming in May 2022.

Five construction workers were killed and three others injured after the heavily armed al-Shabaab murderous Moslems ambushed a site in the Majengo area of the Boni forest.

The assailants also burnt down construction vehicles and several cycle of violences belonging to casual labourers.

Apart from the 257km Lamu-Ijara-Garissa stretch, the project also comprises the 113km Hindi-Bodhei-Basuba-Kiunga road and the 83km Ijara-Sanghailu-Hulugho section, all of which cut across the terror-prone Boni forest region.

Three aid workers killed in attacks South Sudan - UN
[AFRICANEWS] Three aid workers and 11 non-combatants were killed in early January in attacks by button men in South Sudan, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and local authorities said Wednesday.

"In the first days of the year, three South Sudanese aid workers who were helping others paid the highest price with their lives," said Peter Van der Auweraert, OCHA's head of mission in the African country.

Two of them were victims of an attack by gunnies, which left others dead, on January 2 in a village in the oil-rich Abyei administrative area, the UN agency said.

A total of 14 people, including women and kiddies, died in the attack, which was attributed to youths from neighbouring Twic county, Abyei front man Ajak Deng told AFP.

The disputed region, which is under UN protection, has been on the border between Sudan and South Sudan since the latter declared independence in 2011.

The death of the third aid worker occurred the same week while monitoring humanitarian supplies in the east-central state of Jonglei.

These three deaths are in addition to the nine killed last year and five in 2021.

The Grand Turk
Turkish Medical Association chief convicted of terrorism over media interview
[IsraelTimes] A court convicted the president of the Ottoman Turkish Medical Association on Wednesday of disseminating "terror organization propaganda" following a trial that human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
groups had denounced as an attempt to silence government critics.

The court in Istanbul sentenced Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincanci to nearly three years in prison but also ruled to release her from pre-trial detention while she appeals the verdict.

In The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
, people who get sentenced to less than four years are usually put under court supervision but allowed to go free.

Fincanci, 63, was arrested in October and charged with engaging in propaganda on behalf of the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK. The arrest followed a media interview in which she called for an independent investigation into allegations that the Ottoman Turkish military used chemical weapons
...have not been used since WWI except for in Iraq, by the late, unlamented Saddam Hussein and in Syria, but really, honest, not by the Syrian government. And in Germany in WWII, but that was against civilians. Lots of them, just one of many reasons Hitler's also late and unlamented except among devout Moslems...
against Kurdish turbans in northern Iraq.

Fincanci is the latest activist muppet to be convicted under Turkey’s broad anti-terrorism laws. A forensic expert, she has spent much of her career documenting torture and ill-treatment, and has served as president of the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey.

During her trial, Fincanci rejected accusations that she engaged in propaganda during the interview, arguing that she gave a professional opinion.

Fincanci told the court on Wednesday that she did not expect a fair trial.

She cited a Ottoman Turkish poll showing that "one out of every two people believes that people are in prison based on what they think".

The charges stemmed from an interview she gave to the pro-Kurdish Medya Haber TV outlet and commented on a video purporting to show the use of chemical weapons. She suggested that a toxic gas may have been released but also called for an "effective investigation."

Ottoman Turkish officials strongly denied
No, no! Certainly not!
allegations that the country used chemical weapons, insisting its military doesn’t have such weapons in its inventory. The PKK has led an armed insurgency against the Ottoman Turkish state since 1984. The group is considered a terrorist organization in Turkey, Europe, and the United States.

Her comments caused a backlash with Ottoman Turkish President His Enormity, Sultan Recep Tayyip Erdogan the First
...Turkey's version of Mohammed Morsi but they voted him back in so they deserve him. It's a sin, a shame, and a felony to insult the president of Turkey. In Anatolia did Recep Bey a stately Presidential Palace decree, that has 1100 rooms. That's 968 more than there are in the White House, 400 more than in Versailles, and 325 more than Buckingham Palace, so you know who's really most important...
accusing her of slandering Turkey’s armed forces and of insulting her country "by speaking the language of the terrorist organization."

He vowed to introduce measures to clear the Ottoman Turkish Medical Association and other professional organizations of "supporters of the terrorist organization." In October, the justice minister said they were working on new regulations.

Devlet Bahceli, the leader of a nationalist party that is allied with Erdogan’s ruling party, went further and demanded that she be stripped of her Ottoman Turkish citizenship and the association shut down.

The association, which has around 110,000 members across Turkey, had drawn the ire of government officials for questioning government data and criticizing some measures imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The union says that all 11 of its executive committee members are now under investigation for potential "membership of a terrorist organization".

In her final trial statements, Fincanci said the association was the actual target of the investigation, according to the Dokuz8haber website, which monitored the trial. She said freedom of expression and science were being undermined.

Fincanci’s collaborations with forensic experts working with the United Nations
...the Oyster Bay money pit...
in places such as Bosnia has drawn international attention to the trial.

A European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
delegation observed the trial on Wednesday, along with rights groups and supporters, in a packed courtroom.

Ahead of the hearing, Dr. Ole Johan Bakke of the Standing Committee of European Doctors, said the group was "deeply concerned about the continuous harassment of the Ottoman Turkish Medical Association from the Ottoman Turkish government and authorities."

The World Medical Association has described the case against Fincanci as "unfounded, unlawful and unacceptable" and had called for her immediate acquittal.

The Istanbul court sentenced her to two years, eight months and 15 days in prison. She is expected to appeal the verdict.

Other leading civil society figures and dozens of journalists are imprisoned in Turkey. Terror propaganda laws have also been used to crackdown on pro-Kurdish politicians and activist muppets.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Palestinian gunman shot dead in armed clash with IDF in Nablus
[IsraelTimes] Military says 16 suspects arrested across West Bank overnight; police detain three in village near Jerusalem for allegedly planting bombs near security barrier, checkpoints

A Paleostinian gunman was rubbed out during festivities with Israeli troops in Nablus’s Balata refugee camp in the northern West Bank early Wednesday, the military and Paleostinian health officials said.

According to the Israel Defense Forces, troops entered the camp to arrest wanted Paleostinians amid a months-long anti-terror effort, mostly in the northern West Bank, following a series of terror attacks that killed 31 people in 2022.

"During the operation of forces in the Balata refugee camp in the city of Nablus, the forces fired at button men who fired at them, [and] a suspect was hit," the IDF said in a statement. No arrests were made in the camp.

The Paleostinian Authority Health Ministry said the man was shot in the head, and described his condition as "very critical." Later, the ministry said the man, named as Ahmed Abu Junaid, 21, had died of his wounds.

The IDF said 16 Paleostinians were arrested elsewhere across the West Bank, with some violent mostly peaceful incidents.

In the Deheishe refugee camp near Bethlehem, the IDF said Paleostinians hurled bombs, Molotov cocktails, and stones at troops, who responded with riot dispersal means.

The IDF said troops also seized two hunting rifles during raids in the villages of Iktaba and Fahma in the central West Bank.

Border Police officers detained three terror suspects in the Paleostinian village of Bayt Duqu, on the outskirts of Jerusalem. A police front man said the trio were wanted over allegedly planting bombs along the security barrier and near checkpoints in the Jerusalem area.

A large number of forces entered the village and detained the three at three different locations, the front man said.

They were taken for further questioning by the Border Police.

The IDF said the 16 Paleostinians who were arrested in the West Bank over suspected terror activities were taken to be questioned by the Shin Bet security agency.

No Israeli soldiers or coppers were hurt in the overnight raids, officials said.

Palestinians open fire at northern West Bank crossing; no injuries
[IsraelTimes] Border Police officers find dozens of shell casings after attack on Salem base and adjacent checkpoint; troops also seen operating in town near Jenin

Paleostinian button men fired a hail of bullets Wednesday at a military base and nearby checkpoint on the security barrier in the northern West Bank, the Border Police said.

According to a police front man, no injuries were caused by the gunfire at Salem base, close to a crossing between Israel and the West Bank and an Arab Israeli town of the same name.

Border Police officers fired back at the button men, who fled toward the Jenin area.

A video circulating online purported to show the moment the button men opened fire. Sounds of gunfire can be heard in the video.

Police said officers and Israel Defense Forces troops launched a manhunt for the suspects.

Dozens of shell casings were found by troops during scans nearby, the front man said.

No officers or soldiers were hurt in the incident.

The Salem crossing has been the target of numerous shooting attacks in recent months. Israel has at times temporarily shuttered the checkpoint over the attacks.

The crossing is predominantly used by Arab Israelis who travel to the Paleostinian city of Jenin and the surrounding area for business or leisure. It had been largely shuttered for civilian traffic in recent years, but was reopened in July 2022 as part of a series of gestures related to US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. Old, boring, a plagiarist, fond of hair sniffing and grabbing the protruding parts of women, and not whatcha call brilliant. Just look at the competent way he dumped Afghanistan...
’s visit to the region.

In recent months Paleostinian button men have repeatedly targeted military posts, troops operating along the West Bank security barrier, Israeli settlements and civilians on the roads.

Israeli forces have also ratcheted up arrest raids and counterterror efforts in the West Bank, following a series of terror attacks that killed 31 people in 2022.

The IDF’s operation has netted more than 2,500 arrests in near-nightly raids. It also left over 170 Paleostinians dead in 2022, and another four since the beginning of the year, many of them while carrying out attacks or during festivities with security forces, though some were uninvolved civilians.

Shortly after the gunfire on Wednesday, Israeli troops were seen operating in the northern West Bank town of Zababdeh, near Jenin, and were reportedly surrounding a home.

Footage published by Paleostinian media showed a convoy of military vehicles in the area.

There was no immediate comment from the Israel Defense Forces or Border Police on the raid, which came hours after troops arrested 19 wanted Paleostinians in the West Bank and in a town near Jerusalem.

Medics: Suspected attacker in West Bank stabbing dies of wounds after being shot

[IsraelTimes] The Rescuers Without Borders emergency service says the alleged stabber who moderately maimed an Israeli man in the South Hebron Hills died after being shot.

Initial reports suggest a civilian shot the attacker, not a soldier.

The victim, in his 30s, is taken to Soroka hospital in Beersheba.

Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] Mortar attack in Syria kills two Syrian soldiers

At least two Syrian soldiers were victims of a mortar attack by terrorists in the province of Idlib in northwestern Syria, Major General Oleg Yegorov, deputy head of the Russian Center for the Reconciliation of Warring Parties in this Arab Republic (CPVS), told reporters on January 11.

In addition, two more soldiers were injured. The positions of government forces in the area of the settlement of Basratun were subjected to shelling. The fire was fired by terrorists from the Tekad region.

As REGNUM reported , on January 4, Oleg Yegorov said that in the de-escalation zone in the province of Idlib, militants were preparing to commit provocations in order to denigrate Russia. According to him, the terrorists are planning to shell the places where the Syrian and Russian military personnel are stationed.

Iran sentences ex-top defense official to death for spying for UK on nuclear talks
[IsraelTimes] Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
sentences a former senior defense official to death after convicting him on charges of spying for Britannia, state-linked media reports.

The judiciary says Ali Reza Akbari, who was deputy defense minister until 2001, was a "key spy" for British intelligence, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reports. It said Iranian intelligence unmasked the spying by feeding him false information.

Tasnim also reported that he had spied on past nuclear talks between Iran and Western powers. Akbari had served as deputy defense minister under President Mohammad Khatami, a reformist who had pushed for improved relations with the West.

For several years, Iran has been locked in a shadow war with the United States and Israel, marked by covert attacks on its disputed nuclear program. The killing of Iran’s top nuclear scientist in 2020, which Iran blamed on Israel, indicated foreign intelligence services had made major inroads.

Akbari, who ran a private think tank, has not been seen in public since 2019, when he was apparently arrested.

Authorities have not released any details about his trial. Those accused of espionage and other crimes related to national security are usually tried behind closed doors, where rights groups say they do not choose their own lawyers and are not allowed to see evidence against them.

The Afghan Digest mentions that Mr. Akbari also holds UK citizenship. Not that Iran cares about any citizenship other than its own.
