Defence sources say the couple - who have no connections with Russia or security services - were poisoned and samples have been sent to the Porton Down research facility for urgent testing.

#5 They are reportedly both known drug users, the female having lived in a rehabilitation center for drug addicts. Appears they may have stumbled onto some very bad stuff.

#6 the source said Novichok could be degraded by rainwater and sunlight over time - meaning it was probably discovered by the couple in a contained space.

Or that it was fresh. Ya know, I'm starting to warm to the disgruntled employee theory.
