Canada to resume trade talks with US after rescinding digital services tax
[FoxBusinessNews] Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will resume trade talks with U.S. President Donald Trump after Canada said late Sunday it was rescinding a digital services tax on American tech companies.
"We didn't mean it."
The Canadian government said it was rescinding the Digital Services Tax "in anticipation of a mutually beneficial comprehensive trade arrangement with the United States."

"Consistent with this action, Prime Minister Carney and President Trump have agreed that parties will resume negotiations with a view towards agreeing on a deal by July 21, 2025," Canada’s Department of Finance said in a news release.

It added that a June 30, 2025 collection will be halted, and legislation is pending to rescind the Digital Services Tax Act.

#4 While it would cause some pain for the US not to trade with Canada, we would get over it in a few years.

For Canada, it would drive them into a deep depression and ruin their economy.

Think twice about puffing out your chest to Daddy, Canada. He WILL spank your ass.

#5 France, India, Indonesia, Italy and the UK had digital taxes of some kind in 2024.

I'm not sure of what the situation is today.

These taxes do provide some revenue but it is not enormous. For example, the UK netted about $500M in 2024.

#6 I saw a tweet that claimed that Canada takes something like 16% of American exports — our biggest recipient — and we take something like 70% of theirs, if I recall the numbers correctly.

#7 Fun fact is that Vermont gets a huge amount of its electricity from Canada. In some years about half of its electricity is from there.

Another fun fact is that in the summer electricity flows from BC to Washington State. In winter, it flows the other way.
