Because losing a the good third of your country, your second-largest city and losing a naval base in the Baltic that the Russians used to keep your navy bottled up is totally a victory, guys.
It was just war propaganda that stuck. Kind of like how we grew up thinking Dunkirk was a great victory when it was anything but. Running away after getting your asses kicked and abandoning all your equipment isn't a victory anyway. Back then we didn't know Hitler declared a halt and let them escape anyway.

Pretty much did. They remained independent and unoccupied unlike, East Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, et al since 1945.

#4 What I get from this is the Russians evidently don't care if any of their neighbors have any inclination to ever trust them.
