Iraqi army says killed over 100 ISIS members in 2024
2024-10-06
[Rudaw] The Iraqi army announced on Saturday that over a hundred members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) have been killed since the beginning of the year, describing Baghdad’s progress in the fight against terrorism as "great," state media reported.

"The number of hard boyz killed so far has exceeded 100 terrorists, most of whom are dangerous leaders, and work is continuing to strike terrorism wherever it is found," state media said, citing a statement by Major General Tahseen al-Khafaji, spokesperson for Iraq’s Joint Operations Command.

Describing the army’s efforts as "great and wonderful," Khafaji attributed the increase in efficiency in operations against ISIS to better cooperation between the army and other relevant security agencies.

ISIS seized control of large swathes of Iraqi territory in 2014. The group was declared territorially defeated in 2017 but continues to carry out bombings, hit-and-run attacks, and abductions across several provinces.

Salahaddin, Nineveh, and Diyala.

Iraqi security forces have intensified their operations against ISIS cells in recent months, particularly in the disputed areas.

On Saturday, Iraqi Arclight airstrike

s targeted a tunnel containing suspected ISIS members in western Nineveh province, after the jihadists opened fire on an Iraqi army battalion.

Last month, the US and Iraq announced that they had struck a deal to end the military mission of the anti-ISIS global coalition within a year. American troops will continue to maintain a military presence in Iraq until 2026 to support the coalition mission in Syria, which will end in two years.

IDF kills Hezbollah’s top commander, says he was overseeing plan for invasion of Galilee
2024-09-21
[IsraelTimes] Ibrahim Aqil was wanted by US for attacks that killed dozens; 10 more of terror group’s military leadership also killed in the rare Beirut strike, as they met underground, IDF says

The Israel Defense Forces said Friday that it killed Hezbollah’s top military commander and at least 10 other senior commanders in a rare Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
targeting the terror group’s stronghold in Beirut, as the sides appeared closer than ever to entering a full-fledged war.

The IDF said the most prominent target of its airstrike, Ibrahim Aqil, was the head of Hezbollah’s military operations, the acting commander of the terror group’s elite Radwan Force, and was overseeing a planned operation to invade the Galilee.

Aqil was also the most senior military member of the Jihad Council, Hezbollah’s top military body, after Israel’s liquidation of Fuad Shukr in a strike in Beirut in July.

Hezbollah released a statement late Friday confirming Aqil’s death, saying "one of its great leaders" was killed "on the road to Jerusalem," the phrase it uses to refer to fighters killed by Israel. The statement also said the "great jihadist leader" had "joined the procession of his brothers, the great martyr leaders, after a blessed life full of jihad, work, wounds, sacrifices, dangers, challenges, achievements, and victories."

Aqil had also been wanted by the United States for his role in the 1983 bombings of the American Embassy in Leb

and the US Marines barracks in Beirut.

In a curt statement issued on Friday evening, soon after the start of Shabbat, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, "Our goals are clear, and our actions speak for themselves."

Before and after the strike targeting Aqil, Hezbollah fired some 200 rockets Friday at the northern Galilee and the Golan Heights. No casualties were reported following the barrages, which happened as the IDF alerted residents in the area to remain close to bomb shelters.

GATHERED UNDERGROUND, BELOW RESIDENTIAL BUILDINGS
Alongside Aqil, the top brass of Hezbollah’s operations array and the leadership of the Radwan Force were killed in the strike, according to the military.

"They gathered underground, under a residential building, in the heart of the Dahiyeh, while using civilians as a human shield. They met to coordinate terror activities against Israeli civilians," IDF Spokesman Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said in a presser.

Hagari said that at least 10 members of Hezbollah’s Radwan Force and operations array were killed in the strike, which Lebanese media reported was carried out by an Israeli F-35 fighter jet using two missiles.

An Axios report quoted an Israeli official saying that some 20 Radwan Force commanders were killed.
Twenty big turbans kaboomed underground. It’s as if the IDF somehow had an electronic beacon guiding the missile… BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!
According to figures from Lebanon’s health ministry, 14 people were killed and 66 were maimed.
Correction. Eighty kaboomed, 20 toes up, more or less.
The ministry said the strike leveled the apartment building in the Dahiyeh area of south Beirut where Israel said Aqil and the other Hezbollah leaders had been meeting below ground.

The strike inflicted another blow to Hezbollah after the terror group suffered a pair of unprecedented attacks earlier this week in which pagers and walkie-talkies
…and other devices worked up by Unit 8200…
used by its members went kaboom!, killing 37 people and wounding thousands. That attack was widely believed to have also been carried out by Israel, which has neither confirmed nor denied its involvement.

Hezbollah chief His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah
...The satrap of the Medes and the Persians in Leb...>
vowed on Thursday that Israel would face retribution for the blasts. The terror group did not immediately respond to Friday’s strike.

"Aqil and the Radwan Force commanders who we attacked are the commanders who drew up and led the Hezbollah terror group’s plan, to be carried out on the day the order was given, to attack into the northern territory of the State of Israel — what they called ’The plan to conquer the Galilee,’" Hagari said at his presser on Friday evening.

In this planned invasion, "Hezbollah intended to raid Israeli territory, occupy the communities of the Galilee, and murder and kidnap Israeli citizens — similar to what Hamas
..always the voice of sweet reason...
did on October 7," Hagari continued.

"The commanders who we eliminated today" had been overseeing attacks on Israeli citizens since October 8, and planned to carry out more such attacks," he added, calling Aqil "a terrorist with a great deal of blood on his hands, responsible for the deaths of many civilians and innocents."

WANTED BY THE US
Aqil joined Hezbollah in the 1980s, and was also responsible for the terror group’s attacks outside of Lebanon, according to the IDF. The military said he participated in many attacks in other countries, including targeting civilians.

Since 2004, Aqil has been serving as the head of Hezbollah operations, responsible for the terror group’s bombing and anti-tank attacks on Israel, air defenses, and other aspects of the organization, the military said.

The IDF said Aqil was involved in an anti-tank guided missile attack against an army post near Avivim in 2019, a bombing attack at the Megiddo Junction last year, and several attempts by Hezbollah operatives to infiltrate into Israel amid the war.

The US had accused Aqil of a role in the Beirut truck bombings at the American embassy in April 1983, which killed 63 people, and a US Marine barracks six months later that killed 241 people. He was also wanted for directing the taking of American and German hostages in Lebanon in the 1980s.

The US had placed a $7 million bounty on Aqil’s head.

Following the strike, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi vowed that the military would reach anyone who threatens Israeli civilians.

"The Hezbollah commanders we eliminated today had been planning an ’October 7’ on the northern border for years. We reached them and we will reach anyone who threatens the security of the citizens of the State of Israel," Halevi said in remarks provided by the IDF.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that, "Even in the Dahiyeh in Beirut, we will continue to pursue our enemy in order to protect our citizens."

"The sequence of operations in the new phase [of the war] will continue until our goal is achieved: The safe return of the residents of the north to their homes," he added on X.

A THIRD STRIKE
Friday’s strike was just the third time Israel has targeted Beirut since the IDF began responding to cross-border fire from Hezbollah that began a day after Hamas’s October 7 onslaught.

In July, an Israeli airstrike in Beirut killed Hezbollah’s military chief Shukr, and before that in January, Hamas deputy leader Saleh al-Arouri was killed in an IAF strike in the Lebanese capital.

Hezbollah has pledged to continue its fire until there is a ceasefire in Gazoo

It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
. Most of the strikes by both sides have been contained to the border area, but have forced tens of thousands of Israelis and Lebanese to evacuate their homes.

While Israel has repeated for months that it would prefer a diplomatic solution that would allow its residents to return to their homes, it has said it would use military force if necessary.

The US has sought to broker a deal, which among other things would see Hezbollah retreat 10 kilometers away from the border, in line with UN Security Resolution 1701, which the terror group has long violated. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
it has acknowledged that the surest way to strike such an agreement will be by first reaching a ceasefire in Gaza, which has also remained elusive.

Still, US special envoy Amos Hochstein told Israeli leaders during a visit earlier this week that launching a war against Hezbollah isn’t any more likely to secure Israel the conditions it is seeking to return its 60,000 evacuated residents to their homes and argued that the sides will ultimately be pushed to agree to the same deal currently on the table after both suffering major losses.

US NOT TOLD IN ADVANCE
US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. This Is A Man That Does Not Seem Demented...
said Friday that he is "working" on allowing people to return to their homes on this week’s Israeli-Hezbollah tensions.

Biden told news hounds at the start of a cabinet meeting that he wants to "make sure that the people in northern Israel as well as southern Lebanon are able to go back to their homes, to go back safely."

"The secretary of state, the secretary of defense, our whole team are working with the intelligence community to try to get that done. We’re going to keep at it until we get it done, but we’ve got a way to go," Biden said.

White House spokesperson John Kirby said he was unaware of any Israeli heads-up on Friday’s strike. He stressed that the US wasn’t involved and was still working to avoid further military escalation through a diplomatic arrangement.

An Israeli official told the Axios news site on Friday that Jerusalem had reached the conclusion that a diplomatic solution would not be possible without a military escalation first, indicating Jerusalem’s hope that this week’s strikes will coax Hezbollah into agreeing to terms that it has yet to accept.

"This is why we have been gradually taking our gloves off and increasing our attacks against Hezbollah," the Israeli official said.

Israel announced earlier this week that it was amending its war objectives — formulated after Hamas invaded southern Israel from Gaza on October 7, slaughtered some 1,200 people and kidnapped 251 hostages — to add the additional imperative to return displaced northern residents safely to their homes.

’INCREASING PRICE’
Speaking to troops on Wednesday, Gallant said: "Hezbollah will pay an increasing price" as Israel tries to "ensure the safe return" of its citizens to border areas. "We are at the start of a new phase in the war.

Netanyahu, meanwhile, delayed his scheduled departure to the United States, where he is due to address the UN General Assembly, by a day, from September 24 to September 25, with an official citing the situation on the northern front.

For his part, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati accused Israel of giving "no weight to any humanitarian, legal or moral considerations."

Earlier Friday, Hezbollah said it targeted at least six Israeli military bases with salvos of rockets after an overnight bombardment that people in south Lebanon described as among the fiercest so far.

Rocket sirens sounded in northern Israel’s Safed, Rosh Pina and numerous other nearby communities shortly after the strike.

The IDF said it responded to the rocket barrage by targeting a Hezbollah operative via dronezap in southern Lebanon’s Kafr Kila and having fighter jets strike buildings used by Hezbollah in Kafr Kila, as well as Aitaroun, Mays al-Jabal, Taybeh, Odaisseh and Yaroun.

Since October 8, Hezbollah-led forces have attacked Israeli communities and military posts along the border on a near-daily basis, with the group saying it is doing so to support Gaza amid the war there.

So far, the skirmishes have resulted in 26 civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of 22 IDF soldiers and reservists. There have also been several attacks from Syria, without any injuries.

Hezbollah has named 483 members who have been killed by Israel during the ongoing skirmishes, mostly in Lebanon but some also in Syria. Another 79 operatives from other terror groups, a Lebanese soldier, and dozens of civilians have also been killed.

Meanwhile,

Kata’ib Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy operating in Iraq and Syria that is not directly affiliated with its Lebanese namesake, announced, the death of a member in an alleged Israeli airstrike near Damascus on Friday morning.

The terror group said in a statement that Abu Haidar al-Khafaji served as a security advisor in the Damascus area.

was found killed in Babil province on Monday morning, a day after he was kidnapped by an unidentified gang in front of his house.

Babil security forces found the body of Aysar al-Khafaji dumped on the highway Jableh area, north of Babil, according to a statement from the Iraqi interior ministry.

"At a time when the security services in the Ministry of Interior are seeking to establish security and stability in different regions of the country, criminal elements are trying from time to time to disturb this stability, something that the Ministry of Interior will not allow," read the statement.

The Khafaji tribe released a strongly-worded statement later in the day, holding the Iraqi government responsible for Aysar’s death and calling on relevant authorities to uncover the perpetrators as soon as possible and hold them accountable.

"Condemnations and denunciations have become useless... Enough silence. Enough bloodshed," said the tribe.

Videos published on social media of the funeral processions depicted a member of the Khafaji family saying that they will grant Babil governor Adnan Faihan 24 hours to uncover the killers "otherwise all offices shall become our target."

PMF thwart attempted bombing targeting Arbaeen pilgrims
2023-09-05
[Shafaq News] The commander of operations in Diyala for the Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi), Talib al-Mousawi, revealed on Monday the successful prevention of an attempt to target Arbaeen pilgrims with bombs in the southeastern part of al-Muqdadiyah district.

In a statement to Shafaq News Agency, al-Mousawi stated, "A unit from the Leadership Protection Regiment moved this morning based on precise intelligence indicating the presence of bombs in the village of Jassim al-Ajil, southeast of the Muqdadiyah district."

He further explained that the unit discovered two rigged bombs along with PKC machine guns and hand grenades. The explosive ordnance disposal teams safely detonated the devices and returned to their location.

Iraq achieves self-sufficiency in wheat production for 2023
2023-08-21
It’s been a rough year since Russia confiscated Ukraine’s wheat crop as part of their Not War thingy, but I’m sure Iraqi farmers are not the only ones who responded.
[Shafaq News] The Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture announced on Sunday that the country has achieved self-sufficiency in wheat production for the current year 2023, eliminating the need for wheat imports.

According to Deputy Minister Mithaq Abdul Hussein al-Khafaji, the Iraqi government has allocated financial support for farmers and agricultural crops in the general budget law. This support has contributed to the successful wheat harvest, allowing Iraq to produce more than 5 million tons of wheat this year, a quantity sufficient to sustain the food basket without requiring imports.

Al-Khafaji affirmed the ministry's intention to increase support for farmers in the coming year, despite the challenges posed by climate change and rising temperatures. He emphasized that the ministry is adopting new methods that can adapt to water scarcity, utilizing machinery and equipment to enhance production.

The Agriculture Minister, Abbas al-Aliawi, previously informed Shafaq News Agency that Iraq had officially cultivated approximately 8 million dunams of land. Around 4 million dunams were cultivated in desert lands, and an additional 2.5 million dunams in irrigated lands. Recently, approximately 1.5 million dunams were cultivated in various Iraqi provinces.

Last May, the Iraqi Ministry of Agriculture declared the successful marketing season for the 2022-2023 wheat harvest and confirmed that all dues owed to farmers had been disbursed smoothly.

The spokesperson affirmed that the fight against ISIS continues "even in geographically complex areas" and that the capabilities of the Iraqi army are expanding to more precisely identify areas where ISIS cells exist.

ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi and Syrian territory in 2014 and declared a so-called "caliphate." Iraqi intelligence arrest ‘important’ ISIS member in Sulaimani

(ISIS) in the Kurdistan Region’s province of Sulaimani after tracking him down for ten months, the country’s Security Media Cell said.

"The Iraqi National Intelligence Service managed to arrest an important terrorist target involved in targeting security forces and civilians in a number of Iraqi provinces," a statement from the cell reads, adding that the suspect was active in areas north of the capital Baghdad, as well as Kirkuk and Salahaddin.

According to the cell, the Tuesday operation in Sulaimani was carried out in coordination with counterterrorism forces in the city.

At least 17 people sentenced to death for terror charges in Iraq were executed in 2021, reported AFP. Amnesty recorded 45 executions in 2019, down from 100 the year before.

An Iraqi F-16 strike on a suspected ISIS hideout in Kirkuk on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of at least four alleged members of the group, the cell announced.

Also on Tuesday, a Baghdad court sentenced eight people to death for attempting to restructure ISIS from prison and escape the facility.

Over 200 ISIS fighters were killed in Iraq in 2022, Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji, spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, told Rudaw late December.

ISIS continues to pose ideological threat: Abadi
2023-03-03
[Rudaw] Former Iraqi prime minister on Thursday warned that though defeated territorially, the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. (ISIS) continues to pose a threat as an ideology.

Speaking at the second annual Erbil Forum, Haider al-Abadi, stated that "ISIS as an ideology still exists. You cannot overcome an ideology with guns," referring to the fact that the jihadist group was declared militarily defeated in 2017.

"The population assumed that the threat of ISIS disappeared, but it didn't. ISIS remained dangerous until we smacked their heads in djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
," Abadi stated.

ISIS seized large swathes of Iraqi and Syrian territory in 2014 and declared a so-called "caliphate." While the group was declared territorially defeated in Iraq in 2017, it still continues to pose serious security risks through hit-and-run attacks, bombings, and abductions across several provinces.

The terror group is particularly active in the disputed territories between Erbil and Baghdad, stretching across several provinces including Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
Salahaddin, and Diyala.

Over 200 ISIS fighters were killed in Iraq in 2022, Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji, spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, told Rudaw late December.

POLITICS AND ECONOMICS IN IRAQ
"The country requires a unified vision and we need the best people to come enact upon that vision," Abadi said when touching upon the economic and political changes Iraq faces.

"If we as a collective do not change ourselves, nobody else from the outside world will come and change us," Abadi added. "The change has to come from the ballot boxes."

Snap parliamentary elections were held last October, resulting in a victory for prominent Shia holy man Moqtada Tater al-Sadr

. After failing to gather support to form a government, the Sadrist bloc consisting of 73 MPs resigned from parliament in June.

Months of political stalemate followed and the peak of tension between the rival Shiite factions manifested into deadly festivities in September which left at least 30 people dead, marking the worst violence the capital had witnessed in years.

"This was a political decision via a political movement, but the basic constraint was posed by the constitution," the former Iraqi premier said regarding the withdrawal of the Sadrist Movement from the Iraqi political process.

Abadi also touched upon the instability of the Iraqi dinar on the exchange market. Iraq earlier in February restored the exchange rate of the IQD-USD to 1,300 per dollar, the highest value of the dinar since 2020, amid a depreciation of the dinar leading to a surge in prices of basic goods and protests by Iraqi citizens.

"The issue of exchange rates is very dangerous. As a prime minister, I was supporting the stable exchange rate because if you decrease the exchange rate, people will benefit ... but this does not work alone," Abadi said as the Iraqi dinar oversees a devaluation.

The drop of the Iraqi dinar value was attributed to corruption, smuggling dollars out of Iraq, and pressure from the United States.

"My vision is that we should have an open market, of course this open market requires auditing and monitoring ... you need to have a monitoring system and follow up with the people who smuggle US dollars," he added.

A policeman identified as Hassan Ahmad Jabbar, 53, was killed on Monday morning when suspected ISIS button men attacked a police checkpoint in Muqdadiya district, approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Baghdad, Diyala police spokesperson Nihad Mohammed told Rudaw’s Hastyar Qadir.

Mohammed added that a police dispatch chased the turbans away from the scene.

ISIS is particularly active in the disputed territories between Erbil and Baghdad, stretching across several provinces including Kirkuk,

Salahaddin, and Diyala.

Over 200 ISIS fighters were killed in Iraq in 2022, Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji, spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, told Rudaw late December.

A series of deadly ISIS attacks in Iraq’s Kirkuk and Diyala provinces in December killed at least 15 security force members and civilians, attracting condemnations "in the strongest terms" from the UN Security Council.

In the annual statistics published on ISIS’s propaganda magazine, the terror group claimed to have carried out 484 attacks in Iraq in 2022, killing and injuring 833 people.

Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji, spokesperson for the Joint Operations Command, told Rudaw on Monday that "the number of ISIS fighters in Iraq is low and those existing are Iraqis." He added that the group has exploited the security gas between the Iraqi army and Kurdish Peshmerga forces in disputed areas.

"Over 200 snuffies have been killed through aerial attacks, with most of them being ISIS leaders," said the spokesperson.

Several Iraqi soldiers were killed in two separate attacks by ISIS in Kirkuk and Diyala recently.

Situation in Shingal calm following days of clashes: officials
2022-05-04
[Rudaw] The Iraqi army said on Tuesday that the situation in the Yazidi heartland of Shingal is "secure" following two days of intense, deadly fighting with a militia group affiliated to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) which called the environment "calm."

On April 18, festivities erupted between the Iraqi army and the all-Yazidi, PKK-affiliated Shingal Resistance® Units (YBS) when the latter opened fire on an army convoy that did not stop at a checkpoint in the north of the region.

Tensions escalated on Sunday when the Iraqi army attempted to control checkpoints held by the YBS, which connected key sub-districts of Sinune and Khanasur to nearby areas. The festivities led to the death of an Iraqi soldier and a YBS krazed killer.

A top Iraqi military delegation visited Shingal on Tuesday. The Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement later in the day that "Shingal is secure and there is no presence of armed forces," as reported by state media.

Spokesperson for the Command, Major General Tahsin al-Khafaji, also told state media on Tuesday that the situation in Shingal is "completely stable."

Haso Ibrahim, deputy co-chair of the self-proclaimed Shingal Autonomous Administration, which the YBS is a part of, told Rudaw’s Jafar Mubasher on Tuesday that, "the situation is calm now."

"People are in a good condition and they are doing their normal work," he said, adding that it is "normal" that some people were displaced.

At least 701 families, consisting of 4,083 people, have left Shingal and its surrounding areas since Sunday for the Kurdistan Region, mainly Duhok, Hussein Kalari, director general of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Joint Crisis Coordination Centre (JCC) said in a presser on Tuesday.

This is not the first time the people of the Yazidi-majority town have fled their homes. When the Islamic State

(ISIS) attacked the town in 2014, the terror group killed and kidnapped thousands of people, with thousands of others displaced to the Kurdistan Region, mostly residing in camps in Duhok.

The Iraqi government and the KRG signed an agreement in 2020 to "normalize" the situation in Shingal, which includes the withdrawal of all PKK-affiliated forces in the city. The agreement has been rejected by the PKK and its proxies.

Ibrahim also told Rudaw on Tuesday that Shingal is an Iraqi town and the Iraqi army can be present anywhere there, adding that the YBS is officially part of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF or Hashd al-Shaabi) and receives their budget from it.

The Iraqi army claimed on Monday that it had controlled several roads in Shingal which were previously held by the YBS, but Ibrahim said the militia group is currently present in all parts of Shingal and that they run the checkpoints jointly with the army.

Vian Dakhil, a Yazidi MP in Baghdad who represents Shingal, told Rudaw’s Nwenar Fatih late Monday that the Shingal issue is "complicated," adding that, "The presence of the YBS in Shingal is a political issue and there is a regional agenda behind the presence of these forces."
