Islamic State reactivating fighters, eyeing comeback in Syria and Iraq |
2025-06-13 |
[IsraelTimes] Western and Middle Eastern authorities see terror group making moves to fill power vacuums, but claim security forces have effective countermeasures in place Middle East leaders and their Western allies have been warning that the Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... group could exploit the fall of the Assad regime to stage a comeback in Syria and neighboring Iraq, where the turban group once imposed a reign of terror over millions. Islamic State (IS) has been attempting just that, according to more than 20 sources, including security and political officials from Syria, Iraq, the US, and Europe, as well as diplomats in the region. The group has started reactivating fighters in both countries, identifying targets, distributing weapons, and stepping up recruitment and propaganda efforts, the sources said. So far, the results of these efforts appear limited. Security operatives in Syria and Iraq, who have been monitoring IS for years, told Rooters they foiled at least a dozen major plots this year. A case in point came in December, the month Syria’s Bashir Pencilneckal-Assad Leveler of Latakia... was toppled. As rebels were advancing on Damascus, IS commanders holed up near Raqqa, former capital of their self-declared caliphate, dispatched two envoys to Iraq, five Iraqi counter-terrorism officials told Rooters. The envoys carried verbal instructions to the group’s followers to launch attacks. But they were captured at a checkpoint while traveling in northern Iraq on December 2, the officials said. Eleven days later, Iraqi security forces, acting on information from the envoys, tracked a suspected IS jacket wallah to a crowded restaurant in the northern town of Daquq using his cell phone, they said. The forces shot the man dead before he could detonate an explosives belt, they said. The foiled attack confirmed Iraq’s suspicions about the group, said Colonel Abdul Ameer al-Bayati, of the Iraqi Army’s 8th Division, which is deployed in the area. "Islamic State elements have begun to reactivate after years of lying low, emboldened by the chaos in Syria," he said. Still, the number of attacks claimed by IS has dropped since Assad’s fall. IS grabbed credit for 38 attacks in Syria in the first five months of 2025, putting it on track for a little over 90 claims this year, according to data from SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors bad boys’ activities online. That would be around a third of last year’s claims, the data shows. In Iraq, where IS originated, the group claimed four attacks in the first five months of 2025, versus 61 total last year. Syria’s government, led by the country’s new Islamist leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, did not answer questions about IS activities. Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra told Rooters in January the country was developing its intelligence-gathering efforts, and its security services would address any threat. A US defense official and a spokesperson for Iraq’s prime minister said IS remnants in Syria and Iraq have been dramatically weakened, unable to control territory since a US-led coalition and its local partners drove them from their last stronghold in 2019. The Iraqi spokesperson, Sabah al-Numan, credited preemptive operations for keeping the group in check. The coalition and partners hammered bad boy hideouts with ... KABOOM!... s and raids after Assad’s fall. Such operations captured or killed "terrorist elements," while preventing them from regrouping and carrying out operations, Numan said. Iraq’s intelligence operations have also become more precise, through drones and other technology, he added. At its peak between 2014 and 2017, IS held sway over roughly a third of Syria and Iraq, where it imposed its extreme interpretation of Islamic sharia law, gaining a reputation for shocking brutality. None of the officials who spoke with Rooters saw a danger of that happening again. But they cautioned against counting the group out, saying it has proven a resilient foe, adept at exploiting a vacuum. Some local and European officials are concerned that imported muscle might be traveling to Syria to join jihadi groups. For the first time in years, intelligence agencies tracked a small number of suspected imported muscle coming from Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... to Syria in recent months, two European officials told Rooters, though they could not say whether IS or another group recruited them. EXPLOITING DIVISIONS The IS push comes at a delicate time for Sharaa, as he attempts to unite a diverse country and bring former rebel groups under government control after 13 years of civil war. US President Donald Trump ...Oh, noze! Not him!... ’s surprise decision last month to lift sanctions on Syria was widely seen as a win for the Syrian leader, who once led a branch of al Qaeda that battled IS for years. But some Islamist hardliners criticized Sharaa’s efforts to woo Western governments, expressing concern he might acquiesce to US demands to expel imported muscle and normalize relations with Israel. Seizing on such divides, IS condemned the meeting with Trump in a recent issue of its online news publication, al-Naba, and called on imported muscle in Syria to join its ranks. At a May 14 meeting in Saudi Arabia ![]() , Trump asked Sharaa to help prevent an IS resurgence as the US begins a troop consolidation in Syria it says could cut its roughly 2,000-strong military presence by half this year. The US drawdown has heightened concern among allies that IS might find a way to free some 9,000 fighters and their family members, including foreign nationals, held at prisons and camps guarded by the US-backed, Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). There have been at least two attempted jailbreaks since Assad’s fall, the SDF has said. Trump and President Tayyip Erdogan of neighboring ...a NATO ...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis.... member, but not the most reliable... want Sharaa’s government to assume responsibility for these facilities. Erdogan views the main Kurdish factions as a threat to his country. But some regional analysts question whether Damascus has the manpower needed. Syrian authorities have also been grappling with attacks by suspected Assad loyalists, outbreaks of deadly sectarian violence, Israeli airstrikes and festivities between Ottoman Turkish-backed groups and the SDF, which controls about a quarter of the country. "The interim government is stretched thin from a security perspective. They just do not have the manpower to consolidate control in the entire country," said Charles Lister, who heads the Syria program at the Middle East Institute, a US think tank. Responding to a request for comment, a US State Department spokesperson said it is critical for countries to repatriate detained nationals from Syria and shoulder a greater share of the burden for the camps’ security and running costs. The US defense official said Washington remains committed to preventing an IS resurgence, and its vetted Syrian partners remain in the field. The US will "vigilantly monitor" Sharaa’s government, which has been "saying and doing the right things" so far, the official added. Three days after Trump’s meeting with Sharaa, Syria announced it had raided IS hideouts in the country’s second city, Aleppo, killing three bad boys, detaining four and seizing weapons and uniforms. The US has exchanged intelligence with Damascus in limited cases, another US defense official and two Syrian officials told Rooters. The news agency could not determine whether it did so in the Aleppo raids. The coalition is expected to wrap up operations in Iraq by September. But the second US official said Baghdad privately expressed interest in slowing down the withdrawal of some 2,500 American troops from Iraq when it became apparent that Assad would fall. A source familiar with the matter confirmed the request. The White House, Baghdad and Damascus did not respond to questions about Trump’s plans for US troops in Iraq and Syria. REACTIVATING SLEEPER CELLS The United Nations ...where theory meets practice and practice loses... estimates IS, also known as ISIS or ISIS, has 1,500 to 3,000 fighters in the two countries. But its most active branches are in Africa, the SITE data shows. The US military believes the group’s secretive leader is Abdulqadir Mumin, who heads the Somalia branch, a senior defence official told news hounds in April. Still, SITE’s director, Rita Katz, cautioned against seeing the drop in IS attacks in Syria as a sign of weakness. "Far more likely that it has entered a restrategizing phase," she said. Since Assad’s fall, IS has been activating sleeper cells, surveilling potential targets and distributing guns, silencers and explosives, three security sources and three Syrian political officials told Rooters. It has also moved fighters from the Syrian desert, a focus of coalition airstrikes, to cities including Aleppo, Homs and Damascus, according to the security sources. "Of the challenges we face, ISIS is at the top of the list," Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab told state-owned Ekhbariya TV last week. In Iraq, aerial surveillance and intelligence sources on the ground have picked up increased IS activity in the northern Hamrin Mountains, a longtime refuge, and along key roads, Ali al-Saidi, an advisor to Iraqi security forces, told Rooters. Iraqi officials believe IS seized large stockpiles of weapons left behind by Assad’s forces and worry some could be smuggled into Iraq. Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein said Baghdad was in contact with Damascus about IS, which he told Rooters in January was growing and spreading into more areas. "We hope that Syria, in the first place, will be stable, and Syria will not be a place for terrorists," he said, "especially ISIS terrorists." |

Chechen women hold a picket in Brussels in solidarity with victims of repression
2024-12-08 | |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. [KavkazUzel] Six activists representing various public organizations of Chechens in Europe held a picket of solidarity with women victims of repression in Chechnya. The picket took place outside the Russian consulate in Brussels without any reaction from the diplomatic agency, reports a correspondent for the "Caucasian Knot". As those gathered told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent, the purpose of the picket was to protest against the repressions carried out against Chechen women. One of the organizers of the picket was the "United Force" movement, which recalled the role of Chechen women in the national liberation struggle of Chechens in the past. "The role of Chechen women in the national liberation struggle of the Chechen people is not only significant, but also decisive. We remember how they took on the economic burden of wartime, how they risked their lives [...]," said the announcement of the event, distributed the day before on Chechen media platforms of opponents of the republican authorities. Those gathered at the Russian consulate in Brussels openly spoke about the abductions, persecution and pressure to which mothers, wives and sisters of the regime's opponents are subjected. In their hands they held printed portraits of Zarema Musayeva, Amina Okuyeva, Natalya Estemirova, Binazira Khamidova. Zarema Musayeva is the wife of former federal judge Saidi Yangulbaev. Chechen security forces took her away from her apartment in Nizhny Novgorod on January 20, 2022. After that, the head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov accused the Yangulbaev family of organizing a terrorist network and said that a place "in prison or underground" awaited them. The car in which Adam Osmaev and his wife Amina Okueva were traveling was fired upon near the village of Glevakha near Kiev on October 30, 2017. Okueva died on the spot, and Osmaev was wounded. On January 12, 2021, Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov announced that the police had detained members of a criminal group, one of whose members is suspected of organizing an assassination attempt on Osmaev and the murder of his wife Okueva. Igor Redkin, a native of Kaspiysk, was arrested for two months until March 11. In February of the same year, Redkin was released under house arrest. In December 2023, it became clear that Redkin had left for Hungary. Natalya Estemirova was kidnapped on July 15, 2009, taken to Ingushetia and killed. Based on her information about human rights violations in Chechnya, human rights activists made inquiries to official bodies and compiled lists of missing persons. You can learn about the investigation and the main versions of the murder of the human rights activist from the "Caucasian Knot" report " The Murder of Natalya Estemirova ". "We have gathered here to protest against the Kadyrov regime, against the crimes against Chechen women. I want to clarify that the Kadyrov regime is not a Chechen regime, but a Russian one, and has nothing in common with Chechen culture," Fatima Suleimanova, a representative of the United Force movement, told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. The action is an expression of solidarity, not a demand on the Russian embassy, the event's co-organizer, an activist named Safiya, told a "Caucasian Knot" correspondent. "We have no demands on the embassy, there is no point in talking to them. We want to show solidarity with Chechen women, to show that we are with them. First of all, this concerns Zarema Musayeva, as well as the stories when Mufti Salah Mezhiyev removed niqabs from girls.
She noted that the case of Zarema Musayeva "only strengthened the feeling in Chechen society that Kadyrov is only capable of fighting women." Those gathered also outlined a number of other problems of the diaspora related to the provision of asylum to agents of the regime and the deportation of political refugees. "The most people gather for rallies against extraditions. And often it is possible to prevent extradition. For example, Amina Gerikhanova," said Safiya, identifying this problem as "one of the key ones" in the diaspora. On November 4, it became known that Chechen native Amina Gerikhanova, who was wanted by Russia as a participant in the fighting in Syria, received refugee status in Romania. Gerikhanova was removed from the Interpol wanted list, the human rights association "Vaifond" reported on November 30. She also spoke about the problem of legalization in Europe and obtaining refugee status by Kadyrov's agents or retired Kadyrovites who have no real problems in Russia and, in all likelihood, are being introduced into the ranks of political emigrants as agents. "This problem exists. Kadyrov sends many here and keeps them on his payroll," the girl said. Not all of the girls who gathered were ready to speak publicly, citing concerns about their relatives back home. Representatives of the Russian diplomatic department showed no interest in the picket at the embassy walls. The establishment was guarded by local police, who fenced off the protesters from the Russian mission with a metal fence.

Palestinians say Gaza Tik Tok star, known for videos on life amid war, killed in strike |
2024-09-01 |
[IsraelTimes] Medo Halimy’s friends say he found salve in channeling his grief and anxiety into deadpan humor as he filmed his ‘Tent Life’ series, showing life in a humanitarian safe zone Bad luck. It was another day of war in Gazoo...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppressionand disproportionate response... , another day of what 19-year-old Paleostinian TikTok star Medo Halimy called his "Tent Life." As he often did in videos documenting life’s mundane absurdities in the enclave, Halimy on Monday walked to his local internet cafe — rather, a tent with Wi-Fi where displaced Paleostinians can connect to the outside world — to meet his friend and collaborator Talal Murad. They snapped a selfie — "Finally Reunited" Halimy captioned it on Instagram — and started catching up. Then came a flash of light, 18-year-old Murad said, a kaboom of white heat and sprayed earth. Murad felt pain in his neck. Halimy was bleeding from his head. A car on the coastal road in front of them was engulfed in flames, the apparent center of the earth-shattering kaboom Paleostinians said was caused by an Israeli strike. It took 10 minutes for an ambulance to arrive. Hours later doctors pronounced Halimy dead. "He represented a message," Murad said on Friday, still recovering from his shrapnel wounds and reeling from the apparent ![]() KABOOM!... that killed his friend. "He represented hope and strength." The Israeli military said it was not aware of the alleged strike that killed Halimy. Lede buried. Headline should read: Really Nice Guy Killed By Hamas Rocket That Missed Israel, Learns Whether Paradise Is Also For Accidental Martyrs. Tributes to Halimy kept pouring in Friday from friends as far afield as Harker Heights, Texas, where he spent a year in 2021 as part of an exchange program sponsored by the State Department."Medo was the life of the hangout... humor and kindness and wit, all things that can never be forgotten," said Heba al-Saidi, alumni coordinator for the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study program. "He was bound for greatness, but he was taken too soon." His death also catalyzed an outpouring of grief on social media, where his followers expressed shock and sadness as if they, too, had lost a close friend. Hezbollah rocket of Iranian production kills 12 children in Majdal Shams, dozens wounded
2024-07-28 | |
In a pivotal escalation of the war between Hezbollah and Israel, the terrorist group on Saturday evening launched an Iranian-made rocket towards the North, hitting a soccer field near a playground in the Druze town of Majdal Shams. There were 12 children and teenagers killed, all between the ages of 10 and 20, when a rocket struck a soccer field. At least 19 were wounded to varying degrees, including six seriously injured, three moderately, and 10 lightly injured, including those suffering from anxiety attacks.By press time, 11 names were confirmed by authorities: Fajr Laith Abu Salah, Amir Rabi Abu Salah, 16, Hazem Akram Abu Salah, 16, John Wadie Ibrahim, 15, Izil Nashat Ayoub, 13, Finis Adham Safadi, 12, Alma Ayman Fakhr al-Din, 12, Yazan Naif Abu Salah, 11, Naji Taher Halabi, 11, Millar Maadad al-Shaar, 11, and Nazem Fakher Saeb, 10. Hezbollah quickly denied any connection to the incident. IDF chief spokesman R-Adm. Daniel Hagari that the rocket was a Falaq 1 rocket of Iranian production whose warhead carried over 50 kilos of explosives. Hagari stated such a rocket is to be found in Hezbollah’s possession, adding the terror group had “carried out the launch from the Chebaa area in Lebanon.” Hagari also named the Hezbollah commander who guided the fire as “Ali Muhammad Yihye.” The wounded were evacuated to hospitals by Magen David Adom teams and IDF helicopters, MDA said, adding that, following the strike, about 100 doses and blood components were provided to hospitals. Rambam Hospital in Haifa said that 4 of the 5 children it received underwent surgeries during the night, and were hospitalized in the intensive care unit at the Ruth Children’s Hospital in Rambam (three of them are breathing independently) while one was in the pediatric surgery department. In Safed, Ziv Medical Center said that of the 39 wounded it received, 17 were in a moderate-severe condition, 21 in a minor condition and one person died of wounds immediately upon arrival. Earlier, an IDF situational assessment stated the rocket launch toward Majdal Shams was carried out by Hezbollah. A senior official from Hezbollah, Mohammad Afif, told Reuters on Saturday that the group was not responsible for the strike, although later Hagari stated that the terror organization was lying. From the analysis of the IDF’s operational systems, the rocket launch was carried out from an area located north of the village of Chebaa in southern Lebanon. SITUATIONAL ASSESSMENTS OF THE INCIDENT IDF Chief of Staff, Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, the Northern Command’s Commanding Officer, the Operations Directorate Head, the Israel Air Force Head, and other members of the General Staff Forum conducted a situational assessment of the incident. In addition, the Northern Command’s Commanding Office Maj.-Gen. Ori Gordin conducted a situational assessment in Majdal Shams where he also visited the area of the direct hit. Gordin also spoke with Sheikh Muwafaq Tarif, the head of the Druze community. Alarms were activated in the Majdal Shams area in the Northern Galilee at 6:18 p.m. Israel Army Radio later reported that an initial IDF investigation found that it had been impossible to give a longer warning time and that an interceptor had not been launched due to topographical challenges. The rocket’s low flight reportedly made the interception difficult. Army Radio added that detecting the rocket was, however, no difficulty, and while an alarm sounded, the short distance from launch to impact made earlier warning impossible. The military said residents had about 20 seconds to react to the alarm, but the Israeli outlet added that locals reported only having a few seconds. In the most recent barrage of rockets since the hit in Majdal Shams, 100 rockets were reportedly fired, according to the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen network. Earlier, a barrage of rockets was fired Saturday evening toward Neve Ativ at 5:55 p.m., which included approximately 10 projectiles from Lebanon, the IDF reported. All projectiles fell in open areas and there were no injuries reported. At 5:24 p.m., approximately 30 rockets were seen crossing from Lebanon into Israel, and alarms were activated in Kiryat Shmona, Tel Hai, Margaliot, and across the Northern Galilee. In this instance, the IDF Aerial Defense Array intercepted numerous projectiles, and the rest fell in open areas. In this instance, also no injuries were reported. The shooting was carried out in response to the elimination of four Radwan force operatives in southern Lebanon Saturday evening, Ynet reported. These operatives included Naeem Ali Farhat and Ahmad Hikmat Musa from the al-Bekaa region in northeastern Lebanon, Mohammed Ali Mustafa Merish from Beirut, and Hassan Al-Halal Al-Saidi from the town of Toul in southern Lebanon, Ynet reported, citing Hezbollah. This brings the total number of the organization’s fatalities since the start of the war to 383.

Biden stated that it was too much. The US is preparing a response to the Tower 22 attack |
2024-01-30 |
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited. By Artemy Sharapov [REGNUM] Three US Army personnel were killed in an overnight drone attack on a US army base in Jordan. 34 American soldiers are listed as wounded. The information has already been confirmed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM). The number of injured is expected to rise as doctors assess the victims. This is the first attack on US military bases that has led to real casualties in the US Army in recent years. The “tower” covered the “revolutionary commandos” The target of the attack was a military base known as Tower 22, located just meters from the border between Jordan and Syria. According to the command, the base was attacked by a kamikaze drone launched from Syrian territory. “About 350 US Army and Air Force personnel are stationed at the base, performing a number of key tasks, including supporting coalition forces for the final defeat of ISIS (the organization’s activities are prohibited in the Russian Federation),” CENTCOM said. The Tower 22 base is adjacent to the largest refugee camp, Rukban, located in the city of At-Tanf on the Syrian side of the border. It forms a single complex together with the At-Tanf military base, located on the Syrian side of the border, and the largest Rukban refugee camp, Yuri Lyamin, an expert and author of a number of publications on the situation in the Middle East, told IA Regnum. “The At-Tanf base and the de facto American occupation zone created around it blocks the shortest road from the central regions of Syria to Iraq. The Rukban refugee camp serves as one of the justifications for the occupation and also as a breeding ground for American-backed militants who help the United States control the area,” the expert noted. Previously, a number of officials in the Syrian government, the Russian ministries of defense and foreign affairs have repeatedly stated that the Pentagon is using the base to train militants from the Maghavir al-Tawra group (Revolutionary Commando Army) and a number of others. The refugee camp has thus been turned by the US military into a shield to cover up its illegal activities in Syria. The base also covers a strategically important area where the borders of Syria, Jordan and Iraq meet, blocking the possibility of direct communication between the countries. WHO IS BEHIND THE ATTACK The Islamic Resistance in Iraq movement, which had previously attacked a number of US Army targets in Iraq and Syria, claimed responsibility for the Tower 22 attack. The movement unites several groups of Iraqi Shiites who previously participated in the fighting against ISIS - and is believed to have the support of fellow believer Iran. The group's statement emphasized that the attack was a response to Washington's support for Israel's actions against the Gaza Strip. US President Joe Biden said that responsibility for the attack lies with groups receiving support from Iran. And he promised to respond to the attack with the forces of the United States Army. “We have no doubt that we will bring all those responsible to justice at a time and in a manner of our choosing,” Biden said. Statements that the attack on the American base is an episode of a proxy war between Iran and the United States at the hands of Tehran-oriented groups look plausible. The so-called “Islamic Resistance of Iraq” is considered by many publications to be a “rebranding” of the pro-Iranian group “Hashd al-Shaabi” (“Popular Mobilization Forces”), which is an irregular formation of the Iraqi army. However, this group is less subordinate to Baghdad and much more oriented towards Iran. This version is supported by footage published on the Internet showing weapons being used to attack American military bases. These include Paveh cruise missiles, Shahed-101 drones and other Iranian-made weapons. Presumably, it was the Shahed-101 drones that were used to attack Tower 22, since these drones are a more difficult aerodynamic target and, therefore, can bypass American air defenses. Since October 2023, Iranian-backed groups have carried out at least 158 attacks on US and coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, CNN reports. A wide range of weapons are used to carry out strikes, including various types of drones and cruise missiles. As a rule, targets are intercepted by American air defenses, but in some cases attacks have resulted in damage to equipment, buildings and military infrastructure. The US Air Force in response carries out regular attacks on the bases of armed Shiite Muslim groups operating in Syria and Iraq. Now, by attacking American military targets, local armed groups are trying to force Washington to put pressure on the Israeli authorities and demand that they stop the operation in the Gaza Strip. But, as mentioned above, this is the first incident in recent years in the “proxy war” in which American military personnel died. HOW CAN THE US RESPOND? According to American media, the attack on the US base in Jordan expands the conflict zone in the Middle East and puts the White House before a difficult choice. Washington will have to either enter into open confrontation with Iran, or begin to withdraw its forces from the Middle East, notes Bloomberg. One scenario for a retaliatory strike could be the liquidation of Iranian military and political figures in a number of Middle Eastern countries, similar to the liquidation of General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in Baghdad in January 2020. It is also possible to launch a massive strike against Islamic Resistance targets in Iraq and Syria and eliminate individual leaders of the group. On Thursday, January 4, a US Air Force strike killed one of the Hashd al-Shaabi commanders, Mushtaq Talib al-Saidi. Also, the target of American strikes has already become the base of pro-Iranian forces in the area of the city of Al-Bukemal on the border of Syria and Iraq. It seems that the United States is ready to escalate the conflict and expand the list of targets for the next attack. Users of monitoring services that specialize in tracking air traffic recorded the takeoff of six US Air Force KC-135 tanker aircraft at once, heading across the Atlantic Ocean towards the east. Previously, similar actions preceded massive air strikes by the US Air Force against targets in the Middle East. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham spoke out in support of a tough response against Iran. “I urge the Biden administration to strike critical targets inside Iran not only as retaliation for the killing of our soldiers, but also as a deterrent to possible future aggression,” Graham said. American media state that the White House can enlist the support of all political forces in the country to launch a large-scale retaliatory strike. Moreover, this is not the first time that American troops in the Middle East have become the target of an attack. However, the United States will try not to start a big war in the Middle East. At least for now, noted Yuri Lyamin. “As for the US response, they are now clearly trying to calibrate it in such a way that, on the one hand, they show strength, and on the other hand, do not lead to a full-scale war with Iran and its allies,” the expert points out. However, at the same time, the slow escalation that has continued since October leaves the parties with less and less room for maneuver. And the stronger the US response, the more powerful a response should be expected from their opponents. At the same time, Washington cannot “give back” and show its weakness. Shiite Muslim paramilitaries shelling US Army bases are demanding the White House stop supporting the Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip. However, taking such a step for the United States would mean a loss of its authority and position in the Middle East region. |

US claims strike that killed Shiite PMF big turban in Baghdad, names him for the record; Iraqi gov’t protests
2024-01-05 | |
Follow up to this story from yesterday. [IsraelTimes] PMF leader’s vehicle hit, according to US official; paramilitary force says Mushtaq Talib al-Saidi ’martyred’ in attackThe US military has carried out a strike in Baghdad against an Iraqi militia leader it blames for attacks against US forces in the country, killing him and another person, a US official told Rooters on Thursday. The US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the strike hit a vehicle in Baghdad. It targeted a leader of Harakat al Nujaba, ...more formally Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, officially the 12th Brigade, is a radical Iraqi Shi'ite paramilitary group that is especially active in Syria and Iraq. It was established in 2013 by Akram al-Kaabi to support Bashar al-Assad in Syria against Islamist rebels, at the behest of the IRGC's Quds Force, which provides the funding, weapons, and training.... the official said, without naming the person.Earlier Thursday, the Popular Mobilization Force (PMF) said that the strike in Baghdad had killed a military commander of the ex-paramilitary force, with an Iraq security official reporting two deaths in a drone attack. "A drone targeted the logistical support headquarters of PMF," mainly pro-Iranian former paramilitary units integrated into the Iraqi armed forces, said the security official. The strike killed "two members and maimed seven others," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... A PMF source, also asking not to be named, confirmed the corpse count and charged that the United States was behind the attack. Harakat al-Nujaba, one of the PMF’s factions, said in a statement that "the deputy commander of operations for Baghdad, Mushtaq Talib al-Saidi" had been "martyred in a US strike." There was no immediate comment from US officials, whose forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria have faced a surge in attacks since the start of the Israel-Hamas ![]() war. Videos shared on a Telegram channel linked to the PMF showed columns of smoke rising above the area of the strike on Baghdad’s Paleostine Street, normally a bustling commercial road. Iraq’s Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudan ...a Moslem country located in the Horn of Africa. It is noted for its affinity for rule by ex- or current generals, its holy men, and for the oppression of the native Afro population by its Arab conquerors. South Sudan, populated mostly by the natives, split off from Sudan proper, which left North and South Darfur to be oppressed by the guys with turbans... i said in a statement that the US-led international coalition bears responsibility for the "unjustified" attack on an Iraqi security force. A tally by US military officials has counted at least 118 attacks against its troops in Iraq and Syria since October 17. Most of the attacks have been claimed by the Islamic Resistance® in Iraq, a loose formation of gangs affiliated with the PMF (also known as Hashed al-Shaabi), itself a coalition of former paramilitary forces integrated into Iraq’s regular armed forces. The spike in tension has put Baghdad in a delicate situation. Iraq’s Prime Minister Sudani has tried to ease the strain between the krazed killer groups that helped him reach power and the US where Iraq’s foreign reserves are housed. More from regnum.ru Iraq reported that a pro-Iranian movement commander was killed in a UAV strike [Regnum] A drone strike in the Iraqi capital killed one of the commanders of the pro-Iranian Shiite movement Hezbollah al-Nujabaa, as well as its supporter, the Shafaq News information portal reported on January 4, citing a source in the security forces. According to him, the deceased was known as Abu Taqwa, he headed the 12th brigade of the movement, and was also a supporter of the Iraqi Shiite militia Al-Hashd al-Shaabi. Hezbollah al-Nujabaa confirmed the death of the commander and blamed the United States for what happened. The target of the UAV attack, according to the portal's sources, was the headquarters of the logistics forces in Baghdad. As Regnum reported, on January 3, two explosions occurred in the Iranian city of Kerman during a mourning ceremony on the anniversary of the death of General Qassem Soleimani. They were carried out remotely; the bombs were placed in bags that were lying near the mausoleum building. 103 people died, the number of injured exceeded 200 people. Authorities called the incident a terrorist attack. Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi promised to find and punish those involved in the terrorist attack in Kerman. He also called on all officials to provide assistance to those injured during the terrorist attack. The US State Department said on January 3 that the United States was not involved in the explosions in Iran and saw no reason to blame Israel for this. The White House is “closely monitoring” the situation in Iran, department spokesman Matthew Miller emphasized.
Among the casualties is Mushtaq Talib al-Saeedi, better known as Abu Taqwa. He was a former commander of al-Nujaba and the deputy commander of the PMF’s Baghdad Belt Operations. Algeria says it fired ‘multiple' warning shots before gunning down jet skiers who crossed into their territory |
2023-09-04 |
[NY Post] Non-WOT, for now Algerian officials claim that "multiple" warning shots were fired before its military directly shot at a group of jet skiers who had crossed over from Morocco, killing two of them. The deadly encounter occurred Tuesday after five jet skiers drifted into Algeria territory while exploring the waters around the Moroccan resort town of Saidia. "Given that the maritime border area is witnessing intense activity by drug smuggling gangs and organized crime, Coast Guard members fired warning shots," Algeria’s defense ministry said in a statement. "After multiple attempts, shots were fired on a jet ski," officials added. One of the survivors, Mohamed Kissi, disputed that account of the shooting that killed his 29-year-old brother Bilal and their 40-year-old friend Abdelali Mechouar. "I did not hear any warning shots. I only heard gunshots directly that killed my brother Bilal," he said Sunday. Abdelali Mchiouer and Bilal KissiAbdelali Mchiouer and Bilal Kissi were both killed by the Algerian coastguard after their jet skis crossed over from Moroccan waters.Family Handout Another member of their group, Smail Snabi, was detained by the Algerian authorities, Kissi said — and Morocco’s National Human Rights Council claims he has already been sentenced to 18 months in jail. Kissi said earlier that the group of friends had been approached by an Algerian government vessel after dark, and were fired upon even after seeing they were unarmed. "We were low on fuel for the water scooters and were drifting. In the darkness, we found ourselves in Algerian waters," Kissi told local news site le360, according to SkyNews. "We knew we were in Algeria because a black Algerian dinghy came towards us [and] fired at us," he recalled, the BBC reported. "They arrested my other friend [Snabe]. Five bullets hit my brother and my friend. My other friend was hit by a bullet," he alleged. Ismaïl Snabi had already been sentenced to 18 months in jail, according to Morocco’s National Human Rights Council After the shooting, Kissi said he was forced to swim back toward Morocco before eventually being picked up by the navy. The Kissi brothers and Snabi hold dual Moroccan and French citizenship, and Morocco’s National Human Rights Council had condemned the deadly shooting and ordered the release of Snabi. Bilal’s bullet-ridden body was found by a fisherman and he was buried in Morocco on Wednesday. Mechouar’s father said he is still waiting for his son’s body to be released by authorities so he can be properly buried. "I appeal to Moroccan and Algerian authorities to reach an agreement to bring my son back to me to observe a proper funeral and burial for him," Mustafa Mechouar said. Prosecutors in Morocco said they were investigating the "violent incident" and France’s Foreign Ministry said it was in touch with authorities in its former colony. |

Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam appoints female adviser for 1st time in Egypt’s history
2022-09-22 | |
El-Saidi, who was the head of the Development Centre of International Students, will be the Grand Imam's Adviser for expatriate affairs. "Women are the basis of establishing righteous families and civilised societies. Islam ordained the appreciation and respect of women and that relations between married couples should be based on love, mutual respect and mercy. For a wife is the mother of a man’s children, a keeper of his secrets and a source of happiness," El-Tayyeb said in a tweet. Egypt has been making moves to empower women and include them in the decision-making process, including through increasing the number of women ministers as well as parliamentarians and in judicial institutions. El-Tayyeb’s decision comes on the heels of a landmark decision last year by President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi allowing women to work in judicial positions at the State Council and in the Public Prosecution — the two judicial bodies that until recently were exclusively male — for the first time in the country’s history. El-Sisi’s decision aims to "fully enforce the constitutional entitlement of ensuring equality and non-discrimination in various positions and in all fields," according to a previous statement by the Ministry of Justice. A few months later, for the first time in Egypt’s history nearly 100 women were sworn in as judges at the State Council in October 2021, one of the country's main judicial bodies, and took a seat on the judicial benches of the independent judicial body in March 2022. In June 2022, thirty-nine new women judges took the legal oath to assume judicial positions on the State Council, raising the number of female judges at the council to 137. In August, El-Sisi issued a decree appointing 73 female members of the Administrative Prosecution Authority and the Egyptian State Lawsuits Authority at the Courts of First Degree. Egypt has included in its Vision 2030 the integration of women’s empowerment principles, and the National Strategy for the Empowerment of Women in the context of the pillars of protection and economic empowerment. The total number of employed people in Egypt reached 29.9 million in the Q2 of 2022; the number of employed males is 24.8 million, compared to 5.1 million females, according to the Egypt’s Central Agency for Public Mobilisation and Statistics (CAMPAS).

One killed, 200 wounded in Iraq’s anti-government protests
2019-10-02 | ||
Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) ‐ An Iraqi person was killed and 200 others were maimed Tuesday in festivities between protesters and security forces in different Iraqi cities, the Ministry of Health said. The festivities with demonstrators also left 40 coppers maimed, the ministry said in a press statement. Meanwhile, ...back at the pie fight, Bella grabbed the cocoanut cream... a government security body blamed rioters for the fall of victims, saying that some of them sough to stir up violence among peaceful protesters. The Security Media Cell, in its statement, called on the demonstrators to exercise restraint and respect the right to demonstrate, which is guaranteed by the constitution. Several Iraqi provinces have seen mass protests in response to online campaigns to express anger about the deteriorating situation in the country, topped by the lack of services, rampant corruption and high unemployment rates. Some protesters rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud in favor of Lt. Gen. Abdul Wahab al-Saadi, who was fired from his post as commander of the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Services (ICTS) last week. The decision to dismiss al-Saadi and transfer him to work under the command of the Defense Ministry made a stir among observers, given that Saidi was a starring name in the three-year battles and subsequent victory against Islamic State ![]() Allaharound with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not reallyMoslems.... Medics at Sheikh Zaid Hospital who spoke to Rudaw put the figure at three dead.. Firebrand Shiite cleric and Sayirun alliance chief Muqtada al-Sadr tweeted on Tuesday evening calling on the president, prime minister, and speaker of the parliament to launch an inquiry into what happened. Among the protesters Rudaw met a unit of the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), known in Arabic as Hashd al-Shaabi. Unlike other factions of the PMF which operate independently of the government, theirs was under the command of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense (MoD). The faction complained of “marginalization” within the security apparatus, saying they do not get paid a government salary like their Iraqi Army counterparts and lack sufficient logistical support. “For how long will the state turn its back on them [MoD PMF]?” one demanded. Iraq’s second city of Basra also saw protests on Tuesday, according to the city’s Tribal Council secretary general Sheikh Raid al-Firieji. Security forces responded with “excessive force” and arrested protestors, he told Rudaw. In the summer of 2018, protests over unemployment and inadequate water and electricity supply in Basra soon spread across the country. They were met with violent state suppression, killing at least 14 protesters. A member of Iraqi parliament’s biggest political bloc warned Monday against the politicization of the protests by opportunists. “We warn against the politicization of protests or its deviation from its legitimate goals and demands,” Rami al-Sikeini, a Sayirun Alliance MP from Basra, told Rudaw. Last year’s protests dashed the hopes of former Iraqi prime minister Haider al-Abadi of gaining a second term in office. Current Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi was elected as an independent candidate who does not belong to a particular parliamentary bloc, making him vulnerable to pressure from both the public and parliamentary forces.
According to medical and police sources, most of the wounded needed treatment for tear gas inhalation and some were injured by rubber bullets. A health official in Dhi Qar later said that one protester was killed and two others were wounded in the southern province. - Police block bridge to Green Zone - Demonstrators were cleared from Tahrir Square a first time but then regrouped, facing a steady volley of live shots, water cannons and tear gas from security forces. More shots were fire even after the crowds had dispersed into adjacent neighborhoods. Some protesters made their way towards Al-Jumhuriyah Bridge, which leads into the high-security Green Zone that houses government offices and foreign embassies. Police had set up metal barricades and stationed trucks at the mouth of the bridge to prevent protesters from crossing, and a security source inside the zone told AFP that reinforcements were requested. The gathering was the biggest demonstration against Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi since he came to power in late October 2018, just months after demonstrations that engulfed the southern city of Basra last summer. According to the World Bank, youth unemployment in Iraq is running at around 25 percent, double the national average. Other protests in Nasiriyah and Najaf, south of Baghdad, on Tuesday saw hundreds gather in anger at poor services before also being dispersed by tear gas, AFP correspondents there said. Since 2004, a year after the US-led invasion that ousted dictator Saddam Hussein, almost $450 billion of public funds has vanished into the pockets of shady politicians and businessmen, according to official figures.
