Defence counsel attempts to prove Nusrat's murder as suicide |
2019-07-02 |
[Dhaka Tribune] The defence counsel of the Nusrat Jahan Rafi murder case has attempted to claim her murder as a case of suicide. The claim was made during a cross-examination of defendants Nishat Sultana and Nasrin Sultana Furti, classmates of Rafi, by the defence counsel, in Feni's Woman and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Mamunur Rashid's courtroom on Monday. Public Prosecutor Hafez Ahammad confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune. The cross-examination was conducted by six defence counselors, advocates Kamrul Hasan, Gias Uddin Nannu, Mahfuzur Rahman, Nurul Islam, Ahsan Kabir Bengal and Farid Khan Nayan. The court declared Tuesday as the date for examination by the remaining 12 counselors, while the testimony of Nurul Amin, office assistant of Sonagazi Islamia Senior Fazil Madrasa and a witness to the case, will also be recorded. During Monday's examination, counselor Farid Khan Nayan claimed Nusrat had did away with himself and nobody had murdered her. He added the defendants were giving false testimonies as the main accused principal Sirajuddaula had sternly warned all of them against romancing inside madrasa premises, and that this was all retribution against his rebuking. The case plaintiff's lawyer Shahjahan Shaju said Nasrin Sultana Furti had testified in court about how Nur Uddin, a close confidant of Sirajuddaula, had intimidated Nusrat's mother about withdrawing her complaint with Sonagazi police on March 28. Later on April 4, Md Shamim, another accused, had given Nusrat a final warning of withdrawing the case, but to no avail, she further told the court. On April 6, on the pretext of unknown students beating up fellow student Nishat Sultana, Nusrat was taken to the third floor of the madrasah's administrative building, where she was set on fire with kerosene, Nasrin recalled. Five individuals, including Shamim, Jabed and three others were all clad in burqa, which also included two girls. Nishat also confirmed that Sirajuddaula had sexually harassed Nusrat after calling her into his own room on October 3, 2018. Nusrat had later told this to her parents, who went to the madrasah operating committee to seek justice, but returned empty handed. Sirajuddaula had also sexually harassed Nusrat on March 27 earlier this year. She had tried to go inside his room with Nishat and Nasrin, but they were not allowed to enter with her. Nusrat died on 10 April while under treatment in Dhaka Medical College's Burn and Plastic Surgery Department. Nusrat's brother Mahmudul Hasan Noman filed a case against eight accused in the Sonagazi Police Station. Later, the case was transferred to PBI. The police, and the PBI has arrested 21 in this case. Among them, 12 had given depositions under section 164. Evidence has been found of negligence by three coppers in this incident. Also, ex-OC Moazzem has been arrested in this case of sexual harassment, and for spreading the video of Nusrat's deposition on the internet. |

Earlier he was shown tossed in the slammer Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages! in a case at Dhaka’s Mirpur model cop shoppe. "Maulana Kashem also headed a faction of the original Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh bad boy group," Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner (media) Masudur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune. The New JMB group is affiliated with the international terrorist group Islamic State ...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. Maulana Kashem had been working at the Okharabari Madrasa of Dinajpur. CTTC unit officials in October last year said that Maulana Kashem had been under their surveillance. Most of its leaders including its military and operations chief Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury have been killed in shootouts with the police or arrested after they killed over two dozen people at a Dhaka restaurant on July 1 last year. The detectives are now looking for eight to ten second-tier leaders of the New JMB, who were involved in at least three dozen attacks since September 2015. The once-mighty JMB, which was formed in 1998 and banned in 2005, has now split into several small groups due to the detention of its second ameer Maulana Saidur Rahman in 2010 and the execution of five top leaders, including its founder Shayakh Abdur Rahman, in 2007. Maulana Kashem declared him chief of the unit after the arrest of Maulana Saidur. Former Majlish-e-Sura member of the JMB and a death-row convict, Salahuddin alias Salehin now heads the old JMB faction. New JMB runs arms smuggling syndicate |
2016-11-12 |
![]() Members of the old JMB hiding across the border in West Bengal are the suppliers of these weapons. The two groups mainly use the Chapainawabganj and Joypurhat borders to bring in the arms, sometimes putting them inside mango baskets and sometimes inside shopping bags. The weapons originate in Malda and Bihar in India. Information from the interrogation of four New JMB members in jug and also some Indian arms smugglers had unveiled this criminal network, a senior officer from police Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTTC) unit told the Dhaka Tribune. The four turbans are Mizanur Rahman, Toufiqul Islam, Abu Taher and Selim Miah, who have revealed quite a few sensational information in interrogation, the officer said. Ahmedul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (AC) of CTTC, admitted yesterday that the police had uncovered some information on this and were analysing them. The outgoing director general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Maj Gen Aziz Ahmed admitted that the force had limited capability to check smuggling of this nature. "We share a long border with India and we do not have sufficient capacity to check these activities," he said. "We have information that arms smugglers use sacks of rice or onion in big trucks to bring arms, but we have no vehicle scanners. It is quite impossible to check all these vehicles manually," Maj Gen Ahmed said. BGB had placed demands to the Home Ministry for better equipment, the DG said. He pointed out that the lack of cooperation from law enforcement further aggravated the problem. "BGB members often check trucks manually based on intelligence reports and are sometimes successful in apprehending smugglers. The problem is, we do not got updates from the Sherlocks once we turn the criminals in," he said. Investigators say most of the arms used by New JMB came from India, even the modern AK-22 rifles. The modified AK -22 came from Bihar and entered Bangladesh through Chapainawbaganj. CTTC chief Monirul Islam says New JMB brought in the weapons through their own channels. "The Death Eaters did not take assistance from professional arms smugglers," he told the Dhaka Tribune. "Although we have information that the AK-22s were modified in India, we are not sure where they were manufactured," he said. "We are looking into their place of manufacture." According to Sherlocks, New JMB leader Sagor of Joypurhat, Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan of Gaibandha and Mizanur alias Chhoto Mizan worked as arms carriers, bringing the weapons through the border, while former JMB leader Sohel Mahfuz, who currently works for New JMB, looks after the syndicate’s activities in West Bengal. New JMB leaders Nurul Islam Marjan and Rajib Gandhi handled the arms after they were delivered into Bangladesh by the carriers. Sanowar Hossain, additional deputy commissioner of CTTC, said: "We have not found any connection between New JMB and any arms smuggler. They basically collect them through their own sources and bring them into Bangladesh through Chapainawabganj border." According to sources, New JMB leader Shariful Islam, Mamunur Rashid and Junayed Khan have fled to India after the Gulshan attack and joined hands with Sohel Mahfuz there, trying to increase their capacity by collecting firearms. "We are now trying to go the source of New JMB’s arms capacity and are conducting drives," ADC Sanowar said. |

In preparations for the attack, the New JMB members brought 787 detonators and a 9mm pistol to Dhaka, which were smuggled into the country from India through the border in Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj upazila, the detainees said during their primary interrogation. They were identified as Md Abu Taher, 37, Mizanur Rahman, 34, Md Selim Miah, 45, and Taufiqul Islam alias Dr Taufiq. All of them are natives of Shibganj upazila and active members of New JMB, said Masudur Rahman, deputy commissioner (media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune yesterday, he further said they brought the gun and the detonators in shopping bags. "These four also supplied the firearms and explosives used in Gulshan attack," he added. A case was filed against the four with Darussalam cop shoppe under the Anti-Terrorism Act. According to the case, the four were part of a group who arrived to Darussalam on a long-distance bus on Wednesday night. CTTC officials were waiting there following a tip-off and approached the group when they got off the bus. As the group tried to flee, the officials were able to catch the detainees while four or five others managed to escape. They were produced before a Dhaka court yesterday where Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Rani Chakraborty placed them on remand for three days. The arrestees may be shown arrested in the Gulshan attack case as well, sources said. During interrogation, the New JMB operatives also confessed that they smuggled firearms and explosives via the Bangladesh-India border in Shibganj in preparation for violence on a massive scale in Bangladesh, Masudur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune. Investigators suspect that New JMB’s Chapainawabganj zone leaders Mizanur Rahman alias Boro Mizan and Mizanur Rahman alias Chhoto Mizan alias Tara supervise the smuggling operations. Interrogators further learnt that Chhoto Mizan collected the weapons and explosives to be used in Gulshan attack and delivered them to Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury and Nurul Islam Marjan, he added. The material recovered on Wednesday night were collected from Boro Mizan and other New JMB leaders named Rabiul, Jaltu and Laltu, according to the case. |
