The Curious Case of Women in Pakistan
2011-07-01
[Dawn] The news of an elderly woman being paraded naked in Haripur, a remote village in Punjab, is really heart throbbing. Her crime? Her son is accused of adultery with a fellow village woman. The village jury declares her son guilty and the victim (her mother) is paraded around the streets naked, as the punishment. Justice dispensed! I wonder if the chief arbiter had pronounced the same verdict had he been accused of adultery/rape. But that is another story. In our Orwellian world, some people are just more equal than others.

So, what then, disturbs me is the fact that why, each time, a mother has to pay for the crimes of her son? Why, always, is a sister punished for a wrong done by her brother? Is this our way of restoring honour? Bartering and exchanging girls like cattle, raping them in the open, siccing dogs on them, and now, parading them naked on the streets. The simple logic that two wrongs never make one right seems incomprehensible to our 'jurists'.

More importantly, these acts reflect the kind of society that we have become: an intolerant, chauvinistic and lawless masses thriving on hatred and insanity; these reports barely make us flinch. Most of us have adopted an 'Ahh-soo-sad-but-that-happens' attitude. Perhaps, because we have developed a stomach to tolerate these abuses of human rights
...which are usually entirely different from personal liberty...
or simply because we do not consider women human anymore.

Time and again, we hear about these ghastly crimes being committed against the weaker sex but we choose to remain silent. The Ghairat brigade (self-proclaimed patriots) in our country seem too busy for these 'trivial' issues for they have other important things in life to attend to. Of course, chanting slogans in favour of a murderer, showering him with rose petals, bringing valentines cards for him, protesting against the veil ban in La Belle France, and yes, blaming Amreeka for the scheduled power outages, floods, earthquakes, traffic jams, gas shortages and everything but, are certainly significant national issues for them.

Why do these intimidating black robes and flowing beards who march down the streets threatening against a change in the blasphemy law remain quiet when it comes to supporting the Domestic Violence Act? Why do not they protest against the so called Honour killings? Where is honour in murdering and raping women I ask? Perhaps, we do know the answers.

To be precise, this violent behavior of most men towards women has been embedded into our mind-sets buttressed by cultural and religious connotations. In most of our villages, suburbs and even in some metropolitans, women are severely secluded. The society where mere talking to a stranger constitutes adultery and choosing a life partner causes dishonour for the family, it is only natural then that these women are punished for their 'crimes'. Part of the reason behind these crimes against humanity is that the women in most parts of our society are considered mere objects. They are sold, bartered and exchanged with impunity; they literally do not have any rights.

Our State remains hostage to influential landlords and other powerful non-State actors; the powerful are tacitfully allowed to take matters into their hands and perpetuate violence against women. The 'landmark' case of Mukhtaran Mai is just one example. Gang raped in front of the entire village of Meerval near Multan in 2002 on the orders of a Jirga (traditional system of arbitration), Mukhtaran was threatened to remain silent. But she chose to fight, registering a case against the culprits. Eight out of the 14 accused were acquitted initially and after nine long years of struggle, she finally received the verdict. Five out of the remaining six were released for the lack of evidence. She is just one of hundreds of Mukhtarans who are abused every year. According to an HRCP report, around 3000 women were raped and another 791 murdered for honour in 2010 alone.

Albeit horrible, these figures should not be surprising. When criminals go unpunished and victims are derided, why would others hesitate in perpetuating similar crimes? Our nation is indifferent to the hundreds of Mukhtarans; none of who are getting justice.

We as citizens must also be held responsible for such atrocities. Women rights violations are secondary issues for us; always more interested in following more important myriad conspiracy theories that the evil US and the Western Alliance is hatching against this 'land of the pure'. Most of us were more interested in following the Osama-Obama saga while virtually none noticed that four different cases of murder and violence were reported against women in that week alone.

How many of us protested when the draconian Hudood laws (I say draconian because they are abused in the name of God) were inflicted upon us? Why are we quiet when the government reneges on its promise to approve the Domestic Violence Bill, but go paranoid when the US detains Afia Siddiqui? Are our Mukhtarans any less worthy because they are abused in Pakistain whereas Afia is in the US? Our priorities appear confusing at best and disgusting at worst.

The only way out of this abyss is to set our priorities straight. We have to make a decision between remaining a barbaric society that tortures and humiliates half of its populace or choose to become a civilized community that does not discriminate against the opposite sex. We must rise above the mere rhetoric of supporting women and make a genuine effort to give our women their due right.

Jamat-e-Islami opposes presence of NATO forces in Afghanistan
2010-12-07
[Arab News] Pakistain's right-wing Islamic Party, the Jamat-e-Islami, Sunday staged a sit-in rally against the presence of US-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Of course they're against a U.S. presence in Afghanistan. THEY'RE ON THE OTHER SIDE!
Jamat chief Syed Munnawar Hasan told a fairly large public meeting, attended by over 10,000 people, "We oppose the 'New World Order.' This order is meant to divide and harm Mohammedan countries."
Actually they prefer the Olde Worlde Order, ca. 622 A.D.
He also said that the party opposes the ongoing military operations in Pakistain and Afghanistan. These operations do not eliminate terrorism, but instead have increased incidents of terrorism.

Hasan said the military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have not ended the scourge of terror, but is the root cause of militancy and terrorism in Mohammedan countries.

He said the Jamat-e-Islami would launch a countrywide movement against these military operations because these operations have entailed dronezaps inside Pakistain, harmed Pakistain's illusory sovereignty and as a result Pakistain are imposed with corrupt and incompetent rulers.

He said after these military operations were launched the rule of law too was violated. "Many innocent citizens have gone missing," he said.

Hasan said his party was also opposed to the Reformed General Sales Tax. "If Mian Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Müslim League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
wants to oppose the RGST then his party-led government in Punjab can easily reject it in the Punjab Assembly."

Qazi Hussain Ahmad, former head of the Jamat-e-Islami, in his speech said terrorism was a direct byproduct of US aggressions against Iraq and Afghanistan.

He said, "We will oppose further military operations inside Pakistain. There is no question of a military operation in North Wazoo."

He said peaceful negotiations was the only way out to resolve issues relating to Afghanistan.

The meeting was also addressed by Dr. Afia's sister Dr. Fauzia and provincial heads of the Jamat-e-Islami.

A four-page declaration was issued at the end of the daylong sit-in Sunday demanding end of assassination in Bloody Karachi and Baluchistan, freedom for Dr. Afia Siddiqui, end of military operations in Pakistain's tribal agencies, solidarity with the people of Kashmire and Paleostine, and stemming attempts to erode the base of Pakistain - that is Islam, end of unprecedented corruption by coalition governments at federal and provincial levels, urgent provision of relief assistance to flood-affected people, establishment of rule of law in Pakistain, urgent recovery of 'missing persons', introduction of pro-people economic policies, removal of corrupt rulers and restitution of Pakistain's independence, illusory sovereignty and an immediate end to dronezaps in Pakistain.

The secretary-general of the Jamat, Liaquat Baloch, initially led a caravan of thousands of dedicated activists to the front of the Parliament building chanting slogans.

1000s of Aafia supporters hold demo in Islamabad
2010-02-22
[Iran Press TV Latest] Thousands of people have taken to the streets of the Pakistani capital Islamabad to demand the release of Dr. Afia Siddiqui, who is currently in prison in the United States.

Demonstrators chanted anti-US slogans and set an effigy of US President Barack Obama on fire during the rally on Sunday.

Activists gathered to protest against her sham trial in a US court, in which the Pakistani scientist was found guilty of attempting to kill US military personnel and FBI agents.

Liaquat Baloch, an opposition figure and the senior leader of Jamat-e-Islami, told the Press TV correspondent in Islamabad that the Pakistani government should cut supply lines to the allied forces stationed in Afghanistan if the US does not release Siddiqui.

Relatives of Siddiqui have strongly criticized the US justice system for its ruling.

"The whole war on terror is a fraud. Public sentiments are very high and they are at a brink and at any time can get out of control," Aafia Siddiqui's sister Fauzia told Press TV during the demonstration.

The absence of credible evidence in Siddiqui's case has outraged many Pakistanis and other members of the Islamic ummah, who feel she was railroaded.

A US court found Aafia Siddiqui guilty of attempting to murder US citizens while she was detained for questioning in Afghanistan.

Siddiqui was charged with shooting at FBI agents and US military personnel in a police station in Ghazni, where she was being interrogated in 2008.

She was convicted in a New York court on February 3, 2010.

Her lawyers argued that there was no evidence to show Siddiqui ever fired the weapon presented in court.

Siddiqui vehemently denied all the charges against her during the trial, calling them 'ridiculous' and insisting that she was framed, jailed, and tortured by US agents in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Aafia Siddiqui supporters stage rally in London
2010-02-21
[Iran Press TV Latest] Protestors in London have asked the Pakistani government to do more to help Dr. Afia Siddiqui, who is currently in prison in the United States.
We'd like to think she isn't going anywhere anytime soon, unless she gets terminal prostate cancer ...
Because Islamabad is going to obey protesters in London on this matter, as they have [not] on so many others.
Activists gathered outside the US Embassy in London on Saturday to protest against her sham trial in a US court, in which the Pakistani scientist was found guilty of attempting to kill US military personnel and FBI agents.

"This is a verdict from Israel, not America. The anger should be directed where it belongs," Siddiqui said shortly after the jury left the room.

Relatives of Siddiqui have strongly criticized the US justice system for its ruling. Human rights organizations have also expressed doubts about the accuracy of the US account of the event.

Many political activists claim believe Siddiqui was Prisoner 650 of the US detention facility in Bagram, Afghanistan, where they say she was tortured for five years until one day US authorities announced that they had found her in Afghanistan.

Siddiqui may be given a life sentence by the judge, who will probably not make a decision on the case until May.

The conviction immediately triggered protests in various parts of Pakistan, where anti-US sentiments were already running high.

Dozens of Pakistani nationals were secretly transported to US prisons after the 9/11 attacks.

Pakistani opposition parties accused former President Pervez Musharraf of handing hundreds of Pakistanis over to the US authorities. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry says Washington has handed over about 60 Pakistani prisoners to Islamabad and negotiations are under way for the release of the remaining prisoners.

Afia Siddiqui flown to US for trial
2008-08-05
Dr Afia Siddiqui, "missing" with her three children from Karachi for six years, was underground in Pakistan and Afghanistan all this time. She was arrested on July 21 this year from Kabul and has been flown to the United States to face terrorism-related charges.

Contrary to several newspaper reports over the years, including recent ones, Dr Siddiqui has never been in Pakistani custody and neither in that of the US, until her arrest barely two weeks ago. She left the US in early 2003 as the net around her was tightening, since she was believed to be involved in offering her scientific expertise and other help to Al Qaeda or related groups.

Dr Siddiqui, along with her three children, took a cab from her mother's house in Gulshan-e-Iqbal in Karachi on March 30, 2003, to take a flight for Rawalpindi, but never arrived at the airport. The family, it appears, was not unaware of Dr Siddiqui's whereabouts although it kept claiming otherwise.
So when do they get arrested?
On April 1, 2003, the then interior minister Faisal Saleh Hayat denied Pakistani authorities had arrested the scientist. He was reported to have said a day later that Dr Siddiqui was connected to Al Qaeda and was absconding.

Dr Siddiqui, who spent 10 years at prestigious American academic institutions, completing her PhD in genetics, returned to Pakistan in 2002 but went back to the US in February 2003, apparently to look for a job appropriate to her qualifications. She returned to Karachi by the end of February 2003 after renting a post office box in her name in Maryland for receipt of her mail. It has been claimed by the FBI that the box was hired for Majid Khan, allegedly a member of Al Qaeda residing in Baltimore.

At the time, NBC reported that the Pakistani scientist had been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of facilitating money transfers for the terror networks of Osama Bin Laden, a report her mother called "absurd".
